Squaring the Strange

First we discuss how the term “Gish gallop” has entered the common vernacular thanks to the recent Presidential debate. Then Ben ponders why conspiracy buffs don't care about the admitted, real Boeing conspiracy, or why psychics can't offer up explanations for the Rust killing. Celestia gets excited about folklore in pop culture: namely, “The Crooked Man” in a new Hellboy movie. For our main segment, we are rejoined by skeptical author and illustrator Daniel Loxton, to talk about MONSTER HUNTS!—that is, serious expeditions to find cryptids or other mysterious creatures. From Nazis looking for Yeti to missionaries searching out dinosaurs in Africa, there are anthropological considerations when engaging with locals in a foreign land. And what makes a monster hunt successful? Lock Ness is a success in that practically every drop of water in it has been examined, to no avail. We touch on Ben's trips to remote parts of Nicaragua to look for the chupacabra, as well as other expeditions in the 20th century, to find a death worm in Mongolia, the Mokele-mbembe in Africa, and a mermaid-like Ri in New Guinea. We also touch on overpriced Bigfoot “hunt” experiences as well as “educational hoaxes” like snipe hunting.

Dugongs are amongst Asia's most charismatic marine mammals. The species is often referred to as "sea cows" as their diet predominantly consists of seagrass.  The range of the dugongs is fragmented across the warm coastal waters of the western Pacific Ocean to the eastern coast of Africa. In India, their range extends across the Western and Southern coast and the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago. Unfortunately, dugongs are listed as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN Red List, with their global population declining more than 20% in the last 90 years. Traditional and industrial hunting of dugongs for their meat and oil led to the plummeting of sea cow populations. However, currently, the primary threats faced by dugongs are habitat loss and environmental degradation. Deep-sea mining, trawling, and land reclamation degrade seagrass meadows by increasing sedimentation and hence reducing exposure to light. Pollution, in the form of sewage, heavy metals waste, and herbicides further destroys seagrass meadows. While not quantified,  industrial fishing is also a massive threat as dugongs regularly succumb as bycatch following entanglement in fishing nets.In this episode, Elrika D'Souza, one of India's leading marine biologists, elaborates on her dugong and seagrass conservation work at the Nature Conservation Foundation. Surprises from a Martian Lake Bed

The Science Hour

The Jezero Crater on Mars was targeted by Nasa's Perseverence rover because from orbit, there was strong evidence it had at some point contained a lake. When the Mars 2020 mission landed, it didn't take long to spot rocks protruding from the bottom that looked for all the world like sedimentary rocks – implying they were laid down from the liquid water and maybe perhaps even contain signs of past life. This week, the science team have published some of their analysis from the first 9 months of the mission. And, as Principal Scientist Kenneth Farley of Caltech tells Science In Action, the geology is clearly more complex, as it turns out they are igneous, perhaps resulting from subsequent volcanic activity. Back on earth, Shane Cronin of the University of Auckland has been digging into the legend of the Kuwea volcano in Vanuatu. Folk tales have long talked of an inhabited island that once disappeared beneath the sea. Over the years some have linked these and the submarine caldera with an eruption that occurred in 1452, yet the evidence has been debated. But the Hunga-Tonga eruption earlier this year has shifted Shane's perception of the evidence. As he describes, he now suspects the 1452 eruption was as much as 5-7 times bigger in magnitude, and likely preceded by smaller eruptions that could fit with some of the legends surrounding the story. This type of evidence, interpreted from the testimony of those who live there, is increasingly being employed in conservation studies. Heidi Ma of ZSL in London and colleagues this week declared in Royal Society Open Science, the Dugong – a relative of the manatee - is now functionally extinct in Chinese waters, but they reached this conclusion from interviewing hundreds of individuals in fishing communities along that coast. And very few of them had ever seen one. When CrowdScience listener Eric spotted a few gnats flying around on a milder day in mid-winter, he was really surprised - as surely insects die off in the cold? It got him wondering where the gnats had come from and how they'd survived the previous cold snap. So he asked CrowdScience to do some bug investigation. Presenter Marnie Chesterton takes up the challenge and heads out into the British countryside – currently teeming with buzzes and tiny beasties - to learn about the quite amazing array of tactics these small creatures use to survive the arduous days of cold. She hears how some insects change their chemical structure to enhance their frost resistance whist others hunker down in warmer microclimates or rely on their community and food stocks to keep them warm. Marnie also asks how climate change might be affecting insect over-wintering behaviour - and its implications for the lives of these crucially important organisms. (Image: Jezero Crater. NEWS: New Study Suggests the Dugong is 'Functionally Extinct' in China

According to a paper published on August 24th, 2022 in the journal https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.211994 (Royal Society Open Science), the Dugong is now “functionally extinct” in China. These gentle marine mammals, sometimes referred to as sea cows, are one of four species of the order Sirenia. They are the cousins of the Amazonian manatee, West Indian manatee, West African manatee, and the now extinct Steller's sea cow. These peaceful creatures invoked myths of mermaids and fantasy, existing in Chinese waters for thousands of years. Now, because of habitat loss, food loss, hunting, and collisions with watercraft, the Dugong is now one step closer to meeting the fate of their Steller cousin, and only other member of the Dugongidae family. https://thewildlife.blog/2022/08/26/new-study-suggests-the-dugong-is-functionally-extinct-in-china/ (Transcript) Support

Surprises from a Martian Lake Bed

(Image: Jezero Crater. Credit: Getty Images) Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Alex Mansfield

This story is about a young woman who turned into a Dugong. She and her mother lived in Kerdeu in Ngerielb, a hamlet in Koror and they were very poor; way back then in Palau it was very taboo for an unmarried woman to become pregnant or have a child out of wedlock but somehow the young woman fell pregnant. Her mother was so sad upon learning about her daughter's pregnancy because they were already very poor as it is, and so she reminded her daughter that she had to take very good care of her health and pregnancy because there would be no one to take care of them or help them if they ever got sick. So the young woman obeyed her mother's advice and had a healthy pregnancy and delivery; she gave birth to a baby girl. After she gave birth her mother warned her not to eat "keam" (Tahitian Chestnut) because it was not good for a woman who had just given birth as it causes bloating but "keam" was one of her favorites. Still, she obeyed her mother's advice until one day when her mother went out to the taro patches to get taro for their family and her daughter just could not contain her cravings anymore and so she figured that she would just eat one and her mother won't know about it. She took a "keam" and she cut it in half and as she started to eat it she was startled by her mother, and upon seeing her mother she immediately put her down he daughter and just walked out of the house leaving both her mother and her daughter. The mother then picked up the baby and started to follow her daughter trying to call her name and trying to get her to stop and go back home but the daughter just kept on going not stopping, and when she reached the dock she jumped straight into the water. Her mother stood at the dock cradling the baby and saying to her daughter, "My daughter, you never listened to what I said, and now you're leaving. Do you not have pity on us?" When the daughter surfaced she had turned into a Dugong and so the mother said her final words to her, " You won't listen to what I say and now you're leaving so now you will be bought for a dollar which will be a marriage payment to a wife's family." Way back then Palauans used to hunt Dugongs not only because they were good food but because their vertebrae were used to be made into a bracelet for the children of the royal family. So when you hunt a Dugong and talk about killing them in their face they would cry and shed tears and so Palauan back they believed that Dugongs were human once that is why they feel emotions and shed tears. The moral of the story is that we should always listen to our parents because they know what they're talking about, they have been in our shoes at some point in their lives. They remind and teach us because they care about us and they love us so they don't want us to get hurt or get in trouble. Most of the time when we want something so much we are blinded by our wants and desires that we don't realize that we could hurt ourselves as well as others. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adria680/support
