We had the pleasure of interviewing Akintoye over Zoom video!Fast-rising hip hop artist Akintoye has released his new single “Fuck Em Up Moses,” out now on all DSPs. Produced by Dan Vucko, “Fuck Em Up Moses” is a display of clever lyricism, spotlighting his unfiltered bravado and steadfast confidence. Over an aggressive beat of floor-shaking kicks and skittering 808s, the spirited anthem sees Akintoye throwing caution to the wind as he delivers slick bars about the complex musical landscape he occupies. “‘Fuck Em Up Moses' is fighting music,” explains Akintoye. “This is the song you quit your job and push tables over on your way out to. This is the theme song for black Air Force 1s. This is strongly worded email music. This is ‘bet you won't see me outside though' music.”Akintoye, who is featured in Rockstar Energy's latest ‘Grit Behind The Glory' campaign, has been making a name for himself as a bombastic performer with his charismatic energy, authentic music, and comedic flair. “Fuck Em Up Moses” follows a string of independent releases from the young rapper including witty single “Respectfully,” collaborative track “Aces” with Idris Elba, Connor Price, and 4Korners, and viral mental-health hit “Pizzazz” which was named a top song of 2022 by Complex, CBC, and Spotify Canada among others. Akintoye is riding thee momentum of an incredible 2022 that kicked off with the release of “Pizzazz” which has been streamed more than 10 million times adding to his more than 30 million global streams. Since then, the Nigeria-born and Toronto-based artist has been named a Black TikTok Trailblazer, a favorite TikTok creator by BET, shared the stage with GRAMMY-nominee Earthgang, performed at Calgary's Sled Island Festival, and named a Canadian artist to watch by ELLE Canada and NOW Toronto. Throughout his career, Akintoye has released 3 full-length albums, landed on various Spotify playlists — including New Music Friday Canada, RADAR Canada, Alternative Hip-Hop, All New Hip-Hop, and Nu-Funk — and built a supportive community of nearly 3 million followers across platforms as he aims to not only tell his own story with his unapologetic openness, but connect directly with his fans over their shared experience. We want to hear from you! Matt Martin, a young tech entrepreneur raised on a dairy farm, continues to make exciting new waves in Canadian Country Music. Growing up in rural area, Matt feels a deep connection to Country Music and the roots that comprise what it is today. Back at it with his second radio single, country fans will not be disappointed. “Passenger Seat”, released now in the summer of 2020, gives listeners a fun and irresistible invite into one of Matt’s favourite youthful experiences; summer road trips. The song was co-written in Nashville with Chris Buck, produced by Canada’s own Jordan Oorebeek, and mastered in Nashville by Mike Cervantes (Taylor Swift, Jake Owen). It takes just a few seconds to know this tune is designed for volume up, windows down, and making summer memories. If you’re like Matt, you’ll also want it to be in a Jeep. His second highly anticipated single, “Passenger Seat” follows on the coattails of Matt’s debut single, “Never Gets Old”, released in summer 2019 and earned many hundreds of spins. Impressively, it was picked up on the first day by Spotify Canada’s “Live Country” playlist where it held its place for a full calendar year – helping it amass 175,000 streams in its first year on Spotify alone. The song also cracked Top 40 on Sirius XM’s “CBC Country” channel, and was featured on notable primary stations such as Kitchener’s Country 106.7 and Orillia/Barrie’s Pure Country 106, where fans voted the single a new favourite for days in a row. Not a bad independent debut! A new single is not all that country fans have to look forward to from Matt Martin this year. With multiple writing trips to Nashville since last summer, Matt has been honing his craft with many great writers both south of the border and here at home in Canada. With a newly inspired direction for his music, Matt is finishing up a 6 song EP to be released in the coming months. Fans can expect an honest look into the complex but growing phenomena of a life inspired by country roots but expanded through urban and global experiences that are becoming more common to many of us today. Expect to hear some of the current country vibes experienced through artists like Russell Dickerson and Jake Owen, mixed with some of Matt’s earlier storytelling influences, such as Dierks Bentley and Rascal Flatts. However you interpret it, there’s no doubt you will get a real glimpse into the fun, lightheartedness of Matt’s personality without neglecting the very real, intimate moments of his life and relationships. You don’t want to miss the ride, so “hop on up this passenger seat” and get ready for some great new music from one of our very own budding Canadian Country stars
Ivan Pehar is the Country Manager for Spotify Canada. After spending a number of years at another digital goliath, he made the move to conquer one of most people's passions, the music business. In this episode, I talk with Ivan about the Spotify platform, and how it has become such an important and influential player in Canada's digital media and content landscape. It is not just for music creators and music lovers, rather it is a place for all kinds of audio content both for those who want to consume it, as well as for those that want to build a business with Spotify using audio as a key tactic.Spotify has a few sides to its business. One is obviously tied to consumer entertainment and streaming of content, with the other being focused on advertisers and marketers trying to reach specific audiences. We discuss how Spotify thinks about these two sides of the business and how content producers, like myself, can take advantage of the platform to help build a business with Spotify. It's not just for music producers anymore. If you are a business, a content producer, or just a fan of great music and audio content, you must listen in!Listen to the rest of my podcast as well and let me know what you think by subscribing to my email list. “Kelowna saved my song enough times and replayed my songs enough times that Spotify Canada was like “somethings happening here, lets just give it a shot.” I’ve been on Northern Bars for almost three months. Because they took a little notice of me Vancouver knows me a lot more, Toronto noticed me a lot more.” What I love about what Teon said here was he made me realize artists from our city can make it to someplace bigger where their music sits on playlists shared our countries biggest heavy hitters like Drake and Tory Lanez. What Teon is doing is incredible and for real you should keep your eyes and ears set on him. If I know anyone who’s on an upward trajectory from our city it’s him. He was soft spoken and had a lot to say in the longest podcast episode I’ve ever done. I hope you enjoy this very special interview.
