Steve Palmer welcomes David Goldstein to tackle a complex and timely issue: the legal responsibility of AI in the tragic case of a 14-year-old boy's suicide. This episode dives into the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI technology and the challenges it poses for traditional negligence claims. With AI becoming an integral part of our daily lives, the question of liability in cases like these is more relevant than ever. The discussion begins with an introduction to Dave Goldstein, a seasoned civil litigation attorney, who shares his journey from criminal prosecution to civil law. His insights into the importance of trial experience for aspiring litigators set the stage for a deeper exploration of the episode's main topic. Goldstein emphasizes the value of hands-on experience in the courtroom, a sentiment echoed by Palmer, who stresses the need for personal responsibility in the legal profession and beyond. As the conversation shifts to the AI-related lawsuit, Palmer and Goldstein examine the nuances of the case. They discuss the difficulties in establishing negligence when an AI chatbot is involved, especially when the bot's responses seem to discourage harmful actions. They explore the potential for legislative action to address these challenges, highlighting the role of common law in adapting to new technological realities. Throughout the episode, the theme of personal responsibility remains central. Palmer and Goldstein argue that while AI companies may bear some responsibility, parents and individuals must also take proactive steps to ensure the well-being of their loved ones. This conversation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between technological advancement and societal responsibility. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on the broader implications of AI in our lives and the legal system's role in addressing these complex issues. An international aid agency is calling for Israel to be held accountable for alleged war crimes following attacks on dozens of hospitals and clinics in Lebanon and the deaths of almost 100 healthcare workers. Israel is targetting militant group Hezbollah in what it's called the "new phase" of its war on Gaza following the Hamas led October 7 attacks. According to reports from the United Nations and Medecins sans Frontieres, more than 90 healthcare workers have been killed in military strikes in Lebanon alone; 50 health care facilities damaged and almost 65 medical transports hit. Under international law, health facilities cannot be attacked and the protection extends to patients and medical staff, with only a few exceptions to the rule. Medecins san frontieres or Doctors Without Borders said unless law breakers in war are held to account - there will be more innocent people killed. Simon Eccleshall spoke to Lisa Owen.

Mayor Jones believes businesses should be more involved in maintaining public safety, a stance that emerges from her insights gained at a black mayors' coalition. (Update, 1/28/2024: At around 59:56 in the original version of this episode published for premium subscribers, in a brief digression that touched upon violent hate crimes linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict in the United States rather than Canada, we mentioned the Palestinians shot in Vermont. As it turns out, at the moment there's little evidence to support the idea that this was a hate crime; the alleged perpetrator seemed to struggle with mental illness, had a violent past, and his politics were all over the place, including, based on his social media posts, sympathy for the Palestinian cause. Since the segment in question was about Canada rather than the U.S. anyway, we've simply snipped the whole brief mention out, and the free version of the episode won't contain it. -Jesse)The Oklahoman: “Oklahoma bill would require 'furries' be picked up from school by parents, animal control”Rep. He also requested that we update the episode with additional context about Mark Bourrie, who Jesse claims has a personal vendetta against him because Canadaland published allegations that Bourrie took money from embattled politician MIke Duffy. (You can read Canadaland's piece here and Bourrie's response here.) The episode has been updated and I apologize to Jesse and the listeners for missing that context.
