Georgia Astle is one of the many ultra-talented riders to come out of Whistler, BC — but she grew up kitesurfing and doing a whole bunch of other sports, rather than mountain biking. But once she fell in love with mountain biking in high school, her rise through the ranks was astonishingly rapid — first as a racer and later as a freerider — and we sat down with Georgia to hear all about it; chat about the state of Enduro racing and women's freeride; check in on Georgia's goals for 2024 and beyond; and a whole lot more.RELATED LINKS:BLISTER+ MembershipBLISTER+ Real World TestimonialsBlister LabsThis Week's Gear GiveawayBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideTOPICS & TIMES:Growing up in Whistler and not mountain biking (2:44)Getting into racing (7:51)Georgia's meteoric rise (13:42)DH vs. Enduro as a privateer (21:32)The folly of eMTB racing (31:06)Moving to freeride (34:04)The state of women's freeride (39:06)Georgia's 2024 plans (48:52)OUR OTHER PODCASTSBlister CinematicCRAFTEDGEAR:30Blister PodcastOff The Couch Hosted on Acast. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.06.23.546237v1?rss=1 Authors: Akarca, D., Schiavi, S., Achterberg, J., Genc, S., Jones, D., Astle, D. Abstract: Probabilistic generative network models have offered an exciting window into the constraints governing the human connectome's organization. In particular, they have highlighted the economic context of network formation and the special roles that physical geometry and self-similarity likely play in determining the connectome's topology. However, a critical limitation of these models is that they do not consider the strength of anatomical connectivity between regions. This significantly limits their scope to answer neurobiological questions. The current work draws inspiration from the principle of redundancy reduction to develop a novel weighted generative network model. This weighted generative network model is a significant advance because it not only incorporates the theoretical advancements of previous models, but also has the ability to capture the dynamic strengthening or weakening of connections over time. Using a state-of-the-art Convex Optimization Modelling for Microstructure-Informed Tractography (COMMIT) approach, in a sample of children and adolescents (n = 88, aged 8 to 18 years), we show that this model can accurately approximate simultaneously the topology and edge-weights of the connectome (specifically, the MRI signal fraction attributed to axonal projections). We achieve this at both sparse and dense connectome densities. Generative model fits are comparable to, and in many cases better than, published findings simulating topology in the absence of weights. Our findings have implications for future research by providing new avenues for exploring normative developmental trends, models of neural computation and wider conceptual implications of the economics of connectomics supporting human functioning. The Value of Financial Therapy and Fostering Financial Intimacy: With Nathan Astle

Today, Ed is joined by Nathan Astle, a licensed marriage and family therapist. Through witnessing the conflict in his parents' marriage and developing healthy behaviors in his own, Nathan developed an interest in the ways in which money impacted mental health and relationship health. He explains financial flashpoints, a term coined by Brad Klontz, which are emotionally charged memories around money. He then describes the concept of money script inventory, which is an assessment used to look at different money beliefs, like money avoidance. Nathan highlights the importance of financial intimacy, by which he means a closeness and trust built on shared desires and values in your relationship regarding financial ventures. He shares his perspective on attachment theory, which is based in the idea that, “we have needs as humans to connect with others, and to connect in ways that help us feel safe and secure.” Trust, he explains, is built through secure attachments in our youth. For couples, this manifests in a need to feel safe in a relationship, not just physically, but emotionally. Money can easily cause insecurity for a person, and so it is important in maintaining a healthy relationship that when there is conflict, that security doesn't feel threatened. They discuss coping mechanisms for insecurity, and why it's difficult to recognize these behaviors in the moment they are happening. Sometimes, they explain, it can be difficult to work past attachment reflexes, even in healthy relationships. Nathan explains how couples therapy has helped work through these things in his own marriage, helping him understand his own attachment style and combat unhealthy thoughts and behaviors that might stem from it. They talk about the importance of context in analyzing these behaviors, and how it's important to recognize missteps as an exception within and otherwise unhealthy relationship and to assign the behavior to the circumstance rather than the person's character. Nathan examines the ways in which trauma can affect one's attachment relationship, and how that then manifests in the way they approach money. He talks about EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is an alternative to talk therapy that has been proven beneficial to treating trauma. They close in discussing the importance of understanding control, emphasizing that a good financial therapist should ask their client, In what other areas of your life do you feel out of control? Heading In Football. Ban It? Shocking Truth Of Repetitive Head Trauma In Sport.

The Health and Sport Show

Hello everybody and welcome, welcome welcome to the health and sport show. My name is Tom Butterfield and I'm your host….   On 11th November 2002, coroner Andrew Haigh recorded a verdict of "death by industrial disease”. At the time it was groundbreaking, the first time this ruling had ever occurred in the UK… because it regarded a professional sportsperson….. an ex international footballer, Jeff Astle.    It was the tireless, dedicated work by his family and loved ones who managed to break through seemingly impenetrable barriers and pave the way for other families to claim compensation, and the most recent FA decision to ban heading in those under the age of 12 years old.    Derek Robson, the consultant neuro-pathologist at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, told the inquest Astle was suffering from a brain condition which was likely to have been exacerbated by heading leather footballs. Much heavier than those used by professional players today.    I remember my Grandad saying that you tried not to header the ball between November and March because it was like heading a cannonball!! The water would make the ball heavier, and add some ice and I don't think his analogy would have been far from the truth.    The neuro-pathologist went on to say…and I quote: "I found there was considerable evidence of trauma to the brain similar to that of a boxer. "It is quite probable that it was heading a heavy football that caused it.”   I played football from the age of…….. when I could stand….. which was about 10 months of age. Always had a ball with me everywhere I went. I remember my Dad rolling me the ball, I'd kick it back…. Rolling the ball, I'd kick it back…… I'd try and kick it really hard to get a look of surprise and a puff of the cheeks from him.    I remember being taught how to head the ball at training, and if you caught it on the top of your head it would ache and throb for a good minute after. There's nothing quite like timing a header and feeling it fly off your forehead like a rocket…. But now I regret every single one of them.  I'm fearful that the thousands of impacts to my head will accumulate to hasten the onset of cruel neurological diseases such as dementia.    I'm fully in favour of the FA decision and I hope that all governing bodies take the same stance. I would be in favour of taking heading out of the game entirely at all levels, but I understand that seismic shifts like that make people feel very uneasy…… perhaps the FA trial is the first step in the journey.    I cringe whenever I see a young player head the ball, just as I would if I saw a young boxer receive a heavy right hand…… all I can vision is the brain being shaken within the hard protective skull.    Interestingly there are virtual reality programs ready for release that will try and teach children to header a football, without having to header a football. Keep your eyes open for them.    I know there will be people out there who will be saying this is another example of ‘snowflake' culture, but I disagree strongly. This is a huge decision to take, to fundamentally change the most played game on the planet……   Will it ultimately change the type of player we see excelling on the pitch? Will we find the typical tall strong centre half become redundant? Will the game become more technical? Or will the long ball become more effective and more difficult to defend?    I think we're on the edge of an extremely exciting time for football, one that requires change in order to reduce the risk of our children and grandchildren becoming unable to live a full healthy and happy life due to the sport that they once loved playing, totally unaware that it could slowly take away everything precious to them.    Would Jeff...

Centuries from Martin Guptill and Will Young helped the Black Caps complete a series sweep against the Netherlands and send Ross Taylor out a winner. While the retiring great was dismissed for 14 in his final innings for New Zealand, it was fitting for that pair in particular to lead the way with the bat and set up a 115-run triumph at Seddon Park tonight.Guptill, who made Taylor best man at his wedding, compiled 106 for his 17th ODI ton, breaking a tie with Nathan Astle and moving second on this country's all-time standings. Young, whose playing time would likely increase in Taylor's absence, cracked 120 for his second century of the series and second of his career. The pair put on 203 runs from 205 balls for the second wicket, laying the platform for the Black Caps to make 333-8.In reply, the Netherlands were dismissed for 218 in the 43rd over as New Zealand ended a disrupted summer with a 3-0 victory over the minnows. That result was rarely in doubt, with the Dutch proving competitive in their first series against the Black Caps but only briefly threatening an upset. That was snuffed out when Tom Latham's ton pulled his side out of a 32-5 hole in the second match at Seddon Park, where Guptill and Young also found the conditions to their liking today. After a faint edge saw Henry Nicholls depart in the fifth over, Guptill slowly found his timing and reached 50 by pulling for six. Young then followed him to the milestone in the 35th over as the Black Caps reached 122-1 at the halfway mark.Guptill soon surpassed 7000 ODI runs, the fourth Kiwi to achieve that feat after Taylor, Stephen Fleming and Astle, before bringing up a 119-ball ton with another six. That was followed by the wicket the crowd wanted, with Taylor coming to the crease in time to congratulate Young for reaching three figures from 102 deliveries.Unfortunately for the fans, Taylor's stay was brief and his wicket saw the Black Caps lose 4-14. But the damage had been done and some late hitting from Doug Bracewell carried the total out of the tourists' reach. That was despite a fine opening knock from Stephan Myburgh, who followed Taylor into ODI retirement by smashing 64 from 43 balls. His dismissal by Colin de Grandhomme saw the chase falter before Matt Henry took four wickets to close out the victory, one eventually completed by a Taylor catch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

China's political leaders have just completed their big annual meetings known as the ‘Two Sessions' or LiangHui. The meetings are important every year, in that they demonstrate Beijing's priorities for the economy in the year ahead. This year's event was particularly notable for the government's emphasis on stability, despite the meetings taking place against a backdrop of China facing its worst Covid outbreak since the early days of the pandemic in January 2020 and a difficult external environment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Jeff Astle, APCO's Managing Director in Shanghai, joins Joe Cash to discuss the meeting's outcomes and key takeaways for business, following the publication of the firm's 2022 Two Sessions Special Report. Most people know him as Senator Astle--the long-serving Maryland Senator who retired in 2017. Some may know him as Delegate Astle, and others as Colonel Astle. But few know him as Lt. Astle, the man who spent 13 months in Vietnam flying rescue and attack missions in an unpopular war. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and received 34 Air Medals. For 13 months, he recorded "letters" to his family on a cassette tape recorder and these words are now in a new book, Jungle Combat: A Combat Pilot's Tape Recorded Transcripts from Vietnam 1968-1969. The book is available now on Amazon and a release party and signing is planned for Mach 29th at Harry Browne's in Annapolis. But today we talk about how he got his nickname "Ace", his worst day in Vietnam, whatever happened to that handlebar mustache, and that cute blonde he flew in for the Christmas party. This is heavy stuff and offers a peek into a different side of a man I consider a friend who spent (quite literally) his life in service to the public.  Read the book, come to the book signing, and have a listen!
