Today on The Gist, guest host Charlie introduces two conversations centered on hostage recovery and wrongful detention abroad. First, Mike Pesca speaks with Diane Foley, founder of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, who reflects on her son's murder by ISIS in 2014, the institutional failures that left American families without diplomatic support, and the urgent need to overhaul outdated US hostage policies as state-sponsored wrongful detentions rise. Then, Mike is joined by Princeton PhD researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov to discuss her harrowing ordeal surviving over 900 days of captivity and torture by the Iranian-backed militia Kata'ib Hezbollah in Iraq, detailing how she used fictitious confessions to protect innocent locals, the psychological endurance that kept her alive, and the diplomatic efforts that ultimately secured her freedom. Sullivan also explains his adoration of Pet Shop Boys, and why “Being Boring” is their greatest song. Law Enforcement in this country kills approximately 1,200 people every single year and yet the names of many are never said or known except to their families and friends. What's more, law enforcement agencies and other state actors harm our community in a myriad of ways that also go unnoticed like profiling, assaulting and wrongfully incarcerating our people. If we don't know its happening – then we can't fight back. We cant adequately organize a response. So, every week on Law & Disorder we do a round up of news related to state violence. State Terror is a primary theme on this show – often emphasizing the myriad things that go wrong when cops enter a situation they are not built for, trained for, or even wanting to engage in. One of those situations is mental health crisis. Around fifty percent of all folks murdered by law enforcement are physically disabled or experience mental health issues. When those issues intersect with Black bodies – as we saw with the police killing of Sonia Massey for example – the encounters are too often fatal. A new report shows that, beyond the incidents in which policing leads to the death of individuals dealing with mental health crises, use-of-force experiences are extremely high among people interacting with police while experiencing a mental health issue, and that number is significantly higher for Black men in particular. Our guests today are two of the journalists behind that new report. Josh McGhee is an investigative reporter covering the intersection of criminal justice and mental health with an emphasis on public records and data reporting. He is the Chicago Bureau Chief for MindSite News, a nonprofit journalism organization focused on mental health. Audrey Azzo is a project manager, researcher and investigative reporter, focused on data driven reporting on human rights abuses. You can read the MindSight report here: https://mindsitenews.org/2025/01/31/police-use-of-force-mental-health/ — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Tracking Police Use-of-Force in Mental Health Calls w/ Josh McGhee & Audrey Azzo appeared first on KPFA.

Clark is not a representative of the movement, but through his coverage, speaks clearly to the concerns raised by activists and forest occupiers of the construction of Atlanta Public Safety Training Center (Cop City). Clark is part of the Atlanta Community Press Collective (ACPC), an abolitionist, not-for-profit media collective. ACPC's goal is to make the day-to-day workings of local government accessible to the public and to provide an independent voice in a local media landscape increasingly dominated by corporate interests.

Clark from the Atlanta Community Press Collective joins me to discuss the Stop Cop City movement, also known as the Defend the Atlanta Forest (or Defend Weelaunee Forest) movement in Atlanta, Georgia.
