Show Notes Episode 419: Find A Stranger In the Alps This week Network boss Jeremy Balon shows up at the studio to wash Dave's filthy mouth out with soap! (We guess he finally listened to the podcast.) On the show this week we take a look at the strange history of The Bleep and swear words on television. (It is *bleep*ing more interesting than you think!) Along the way we learn that Dave is still afraid of his Mom. (He should be, he is a VERY bad son!) Then we dive right into the history of censorship in these United States. (Blame the Puritans, natch!) From there we follow along as technology makes hearing potty mouths more common. We see how early TV broadcasts found ways to keep bad words off the airwaves. (Mostly by hoping no one heard them.) Then we talk about the Bleep and how it became an American Icon. Finally we learn how and why for reasons never adequately explained, we all had to see Dennis Franz's hairy naked ass on ABC in the late 1990's. (Blame HBO!) Our Sponsor this week is Swearing Soap, specially formulated to get dirty mouths clean! We open the show with Carlin's famous Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on Television and close with The P(Bleep)cat Dolls who censor their song for effect. This week The Old Man is back to discuss Clifford Stone. Stone was well known in the Ufology circuit before his death in 2021 & he had many experiences with cleaning up UFO crash sites for the Army. He wrote an article for UFO Magazine & Phenomena Report in October of 1998 called "Encounter In Vietnam". I have a personal copy of this issue & the story was too good to not tell to The Old Man. I naturally dove a bit into Stone's background & we discuss his life in a nutshell as well, so enjoy!CLIFFORD STONE INTERVIEW w/ Paola Harris in 2011:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGaebhIo3rIARTICLE ABOUT CLIFF WITH VIDEOS:https://alien-ufo-sightings.com/2018/08/57-alien-races-confirmed-us-sergeant-clifford-stone/LISTEN TO:The War & Treaty - "Lover's Game"https://www.thewarandtreaty.com/releases/lovers-game-album/Wet Leg https://www.wetlegband.com/Ssold - "Passionate Horse"https://ssold.bandcamp.com/album/passionate-horseSuperheaven - "Ours Is Chrome"https://superheavenband.bandcamp.com/album/ours-is-chromeSoul Blind - "Feel It All Around"https://soulblind.bandcamp.com/album/feel-it-all-aroundShow Me The Body - "Trouble The Water"https://showmethebody.bandcamp.com/album/trouble-the-water84 Tigers - "Time In The Lighthouse"https://84tigers.bandcamp.com/album/time-in-the-lighthouseSoul Glo - "Diaspora Problems"https://soulglophl.bandcamp.com/album/diaspora-problemsSnack Truck - "Terrer Demo" Elliptical Path - "Resonant Topography"https://ellipticalpath.bandcamp.com/album/resonant-topographyDiscordance Axis - "The Inalienable Dreamless"https://discordanceaxis.bandcamp.com/album/the-inalienable-dreamlessPhoebe Bridgers - "Stranger In The Alps"https://phoebebridgers.bandcamp.com/album/stranger-in-the-alpsONYX - "Bacdafucup"https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPfa-Xy2Tv1nqYcS_ZnfxxQ0IKTM7QLZ4NEW WORD OF THE NITE:FERITY[ fer-i-tee ]nouna wild, untamed, or uncultivated state.savagery; ferocity.THE 1 STOP SHOP: https://lostrhetoric.com/EMAIL FOR SOURCE LIST OR JUST TO CHAT: lostrhetoricpodcast@gmail.comINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lostrhetoricpodcast/?hl=enINTRO & OUTRO MUSIC BY LEE DANIEL DINGES
"That rug really tied the room together." The next round of the tournament has been posted (thankfully it doesn't fall on Shabbos) and now it's time to talk about our final entry in the "Sung Gems" round: 'The Big Lebowski'! We're joined by the fantastic Carsen and Annie from "Movie Mavens" to talk about one of the greatest cult classics of all time. On what is easily our most clip heavy episode ever, we talk about what makes this such an amazing movie. We also hand out our ever-evolving Apollonia/Lee Van Cleef/Legacy Award (final title TBD). And we quote basically the entire movie along the way! All of that, plus we put together our "Best Big Lebowski Quote" Rushmore Mountain on this week's episode! Good night, sweet prince. Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd
Before her collaborations with Conor Oberst, The 1975, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker made her the undisputed queen of sad indie folk-pop of the last few years, Phoebe Bridgers made a statement and a splash with this debut record of wry sun-bleached confessional songcraft that's as funny as it is morbid. Named after a line from the edited-for-TV version of The Big Lebowski, Stranger In The Alps inhabits that same leisurely yet lachrymose Californian mood of stoned numbness and strange sexuality as that film. Making headlines with its diss track Motion Sickness that pulled up shamed songster Ryan Adams for emotional cruelty, the album functions as a stunning collection of lovelorn heartbreak, documenting that abuse as well as the end of her relationship with the drummer and co-writer on most of these songs, Marshall Vore. Receiving a perfect score on its release in 2017 from A.V. Club, Stranger In The Alps also popped up in year-end lists by The Fader, Noisey, Bandcamp and Uproxx. Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Liam Withnail listened to it this week, and now they're going to Enjoy An Album. Awesome, but depressing episode because we're discussing Phoebe Bridger's Stranger In The Alps and Mount Erie's A Crow Looked At Me. Also, Corbin gives Aidan a happy ending.
Two sad girls and our guest host Drew break down arguably one of the most daunting and heartbreaking albums: Phoebe Bridger's Stranger in the Alps.
Since 2017, Phoebe Bridgers has become one of the biggest names in indie music. Her folk-rock/emo debut Stranger in the Alps released in 2017 to positive reception that rocketed her career to new heights. Bridgers' music is somber, emotive, and haunting. In this episode, we talk at length about Stranger in the Alps. We discuss its themes, the ideas of joy hidden inside its somber appearance, and its cathartic nature. Bob Dylan gets quoted, and so does Hamlet. In order to aid in the explanations, we cut in some of Stranger in the Alps so that you could hear things we were talking about. Those cuts aren't perfect. Sorry about that. Also, a PSA down here: Bridgers' album addresses some difficult concepts, including suicide, depression, and lethal injection. We only really address the last of these directly, and only for two brief moments, but if you're extremely sensitive to any of those things, we see you and totally understand. Just know that this album (and episode) might be one to sit out.Hope you enjoy the episode! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Phoebe Bridgers' debut LP, 2017's Stranger In The Alps, is a set of affecting, intimate songs that turned into one of the year's biggest sleeper hits. A year from its release, Bridgers and her band remain the vital engine behind the Los Angeles' songwriter's work in this session with Hans in the KEXP Live Room. Recorded 07/13/2018. 4 songs - Smoke Signals, Motion Sickness, Waiting Room, Scott StreetSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 1982, Bruce Springsteen released "Nebraska," a stark collection of acoustic songs recorded at home on a four-track in one marathon session. It's an album about criminals and economic hardship and flawed father figures, with lots of spooky echo and heavy shadows. While it was considered at the time his least accessible record, "Nebraska" now stands as one of Springsteen's popular releases, particularly with younger audiences raised on indie rock. To discuss "Nebraska," I called up Phoebe Bridgers, an exciting 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles. In 2017, she put out a very good debut album, "Stranger In The Alps." "Nebraska" had already been out for 20 years when Bridgers heard it for the first time, but she was still able to find something personal in this iconic reord.
Phoebe Bridgers' darkly self-aware songs, touched with humor and interesting production, are the perfect note to go out on for our last podcast of 2017. We discuss her debut LP, "Stranger in the Alps," in episode #75 of For the Record.

This week on "State of Wonder," we talk to Todd Haynes about his newest film, "Wonderstruck," and the fall of Harvey Weinstein; we explore Christian Scott aTunde Adjua's groundbreaking contemporary jazz; and discover the story of a painting that saved a family's lives during the Holocaust.Embers, the Iconic Portland LGBT Bar, Closes Its Doors - 1:32Another landmark of old Portland has closed. The downtown bar and dance club Embers opened almost half a century ago when the world was — to say the least — a very different place for gay men and lesbians. Last week club managers announced on social media that owner Steve Suss had suffered a massive stroke and that Embers must close almost immediately. Kevin Cook, who performs as Poison Waters, took part in the final party as one of the club’s hall of fame drag performers and talked with us about the club's legacy.Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah Stretches Jazz: 5:15Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah's newest three-LP release, “The Centennial Trilogy,” includes post-bop harmonic foundations, boom-bap hip-hop feels, Afro-Cuban percussion and the electric beat manipulations of trap music — all while sounding unmistakably his. “The Centennial Trilogy” bears all the markings of a landmark jazz release, while itself marking a historic milestone: this year is the 100th anniversary of the first-ever jazz recording. Not that Scott is a big fan of that word, “jazz.” He prefers the term “stretch music” to describe his genre and its boundlessness.Eleri Harris on the Tasmanian Murder of the Century: 14:16On the other side of the world, in a city roughly the size of Corvallis, a murder mystery has kept news watchers and voyeurs on the edge of their seats for eight years. A wealthy scientist from Hobart, Tasmania disappeared in 2009. The ensuing investigation was, in Tasmanian terms, the trial of the century.Portland-based artist Eleri Harris wanted to bring out the tragic family story behind the case in her seven-part serialized comic, “Reported Missing.” This gorgeously rendered, and binge-worthy story lays out the case in patient detail, as well as the surprising developments that keep the case alive to this day.Phoebe Bridgers' Profoundly Melancholy Debut - 23:48Phoebe Bridgers' new album, “Stranger In The Alps,” is a profoundly melancholy offering packed with heavy songs about grief and breakups. It even contains a number called "Funeral" — and yes, she really was once hired to play at a funeral. Like the artist herself, the music has a well-developed and wry sense of dark humor running through its core, making for an impressive and surprisingly mature debut from the 23-year-old LA musician.Bridgers and her band stopped into the OPB studios earlier this fall before a gig opening for The War On Drugs. You can see the videos here.Filmmaker Todd Haynes Pivots to Children's Cinema - 32:55Portlander filmmaker Todd Haynes might seem an unlikely director to make a children's movie. He first attracted attention and controversy with a film where Barbie dolls acted out the life of singer Karen Carpenter. That was followed by melodramas, including 2015's "Carol," which conjures a forbidden lesbian affair in the 1950s. Now Todd Haynes has taken a turn into entirely new territory with his film "Wonderstruck," where you'll find wide-eyed children chasing around the magical dioramas of New York's Museum of Natural History. Haynes spoke with Rene Montagne about the film, as well as the accusations against Harvey Weinstein, who has distributed some of Haynes’s films. Searching for the Painting One Jewish Family Traded for Escape from the Holocaust - 41:01This story is about the power of art — or the power of one painting in particular. In the fall of 1938 in Munich, Germany, the Nazis rounded up thousands of Jews and sent them to concentration camps. A Jewish woman left her apartment carrying a painting and came back with carrying a visa that allowed her to escape the Nazis. Now the exhibition "Munich to Portland: A Painting Saves a Family" at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education commemorates the family’s story. Stephen Engleberg, a former Portlander, is the editor of the news organization ProPublica, and it was his grandmother who used the painting to escape.

Filibuster is back for your holiday travel listening needs! It is an all stadium episode, because we just had to dedicate an entire show to the biggest news in D.C. United's history. We talk about the vote itself, whether or not we expected it to be unanimous, and when we are all going to run out to Buzzard Point with our tools and bricks to just start building. We also talk about the road that lead D.C. United here, including Poplar Point and Prince George's County, and how this ended being probably the best possible location that United could have ever gotten (and therefore worth the wait). We talk about two key figures in the history of the stadium deal, Muriel Bowser and Kevin Payne, before moving onto the building itself and what we want to see in a new stadium. Finally, we talk about Brian Straus' article about the history of the stadium deal, and talk about whether or not we want to see United update their brand as they enter their new home. This is probably our last episode for 2014, so give it a listen!
