In this episode of Bionic Planet, we continue our dive into the complex and often contentious world of community conservancies in northern Kenya, focusing on the Biliqo Bulesa and Cherub Community Conservancies. The episode opens with a powerful statement from community members, emphasizing that the ongoing legal battles surrounding these conservancies are not about the interests of the community but rather the agendas of a few individuals. We introduce Mustafa Mohamed Libin, a community member from Biliqo Bulesa, who shares the story of how his community took bold steps in 2007 to form a conservancy that is truly community-run, contrasting it with the historical context of land ownership in the region. The episode highlights the positive impacts of the conservancy, including the revival of traditional grazing practices and the introduction of carbon finance to support community initiatives. However, the narrative takes a darker turn as we discuss the backlash faced by the conservancies, particularly following a report from the Oakland Institute that accused the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) of various human rights abuses. We explore the subsequent media frenzy that ensued, often lacking proper fact-checking and failing to consult actual community leaders. The episode serves as a follow-up to episode 117, providing deeper insights into the crisis faced by the community and the urgent need for their voices to be heard. Throughout the episode, we hear directly from community members, including youth representatives and conservancy leaders, who express their concerns about the recent court ruling that deemed the conservancies illegal due to alleged lack of consent. They recount their shock at the judgment, which they claim was made without their knowledge or participation, and discuss the significant benefits the conservancies have brought to their lives, including access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The community members passionately defend the conservancies, asserting that the allegations made against them are unfounded and that the real beneficiaries of the conservancy are the local people. They highlight the transformative impact of the conservancy on women's empowerment, youth engagement, and community development, emphasizing that the conservancy is a lifeline for their livelihoods. As the episode progresses, we address the misconceptions propagated by external organizations and the media, which often portray the conservancies in a negative light. The community members clarify the differences between community-run conservancies and private conservancies, asserting their ownership and the positive changes that have occurred since the establishment of their conservancy. In closing, the episode underscores the importance of community voices in the narrative surrounding conservation efforts. The community members call for transparency and engagement from external organizations, urging them to visit and understand the realities on the ground rather than relying on hearsay. This episode is a powerful testament to the resilience of the Biliko Bulesa and Cherub communities and their unwavering commitment to protecting their rights and livelihoods amidst external challenges. 05/04/2025 Rev. Paul Bang Nehemiah 7:5-73 5 Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles and the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and I found written in it: 6 These were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried into exile. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his town. 7 They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. And they had 245 singers, male and female. 68 Their horses were 736, their mules 245, 69 their camels 435, and their donkeys 6,720. 70 Now some of the heads of fathers' houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold, 50 basins, 30 priests' garments and 500 minas of silver. 71 And some of the heads of fathers' houses gave into the treasury of the work 20,000 darics of gold and 2,200 minas of silver. 72 And what the rest of the people gave was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas of silver, and 67 priests' garments. 73 So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel, lived in their towns. And when the seventh month had come, the people of Israel were in their towns.

It's been more than a minute since Tesla went public, but the EV company was inescapable on TechCrunch this week. From layoffs to pricing changes and more, it was a week dyed deeply in Tesla colors so we had to chat through the latest. But that was just one element of what we got into on Equity this week. We also dug into Mary Ann's reporting about Ramp's latest round — and up valuation — that fit neatly next to Rippling's own impending fundraise. If you are handling money, it's a good time to be a startup. The team also dug into Cherub, which wants to connect investors and founders, Maven Ventures' consumer investing push, and touched on what Mercury is up to. All told, we were fortunate to have Kirsten Korosec along with us this week given the sheer volume, and diversity of transportation news to chew through, especially as it relates to Tesla.Equity is back tomorrow with a special interview between Mary Ann and Notable Capital's Hans Tung, so stay tuned! Until then, hit play and let's have some fun.Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You can subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. You also can follow Equity on X and Threads, at @EquityPod. Credits: Equity is hosted by TechCrunch's Alex Wilhelm and Mary Ann Azevedo. We are produced by Theresa Loconsolo with editing by Kell. Bryce Durbin is our Illustrator. Our show recently made its debut at SXSW week in Austin, Texas with a live podcast recording at the Cherub pop-up shop! Cherub, one of the companies I angel invested in, is a platform connecting founders with funders. If you're interested in angel investing or you're a founder who is seeking capital and wants to plug into a network of strategic angels for your next fundraise, shoot me a DM @missellenyin with the word “Cherub” and I'll help you get started! In this live recording, you get to eavesdrop on my conversation with two founders on the Cherub platform, Shannon Davenport of Esker and Bridgitte Mallinson of Gut Personal, who have both successfully raised money for their businesses. We all see the highlight reel of how much companies are raising and making, but rarely do we hear founders talk about the flip side of the coin: how much are they actually spending, and on what? Today, we're going behind the business with Shannon and Bridgitte to answer these questions as they get transparent about their company's burn rates.View the transcript for this episode at: https://otter.ai/u/cUhrZz2tqpwo1dP8QAUDsFrbAWc?utm_source=copy_urlThank you to our sponsors!Try Riverside for free today and save 15% off with our code CEO: creators.riverside.fm/CEOTry the #1 all-in-one E-commerce platform: Shopify! This week, Morgan is joined by fellow powerhouse entrepreneur Jaclyn Johnson for the inside scoop on Jaclyn's reacquisition of her company Create & Cultivate after selling it a few years back. In the episode, they get into all things investing, navigating life as a wealthy woman, and dating after divorce. To start things off, Jaclyn paints a picture of her life after exiting the multimillion-dollar Create & Cultivate company - from buying a house in Napa to exploring Europe with her girlfriends. She also explains the challenging identity shifts she faced going from CEO to taking a more backseat role in the business. Morgan and Jaclyn move into a conversation on angel investing, with Jaclyn sharing the purpose of her platform Cherub as a dating app of sorts to match angel investors with aligned entrepreneurs. They explain the process of angel investing, and how the landscape has changed post-pandemic. The conversation is not all business! Jaclyn and Morgan discuss the value they both place on investing in resources that free up time, and they share the reality that it's normal for high-powered, ambitious women to have a lot of support behind the scenes. They also talk relationships, with Jaclyn sharing about her post-divorce dating life and her attempts to step into her feminine energy. This episode is a true journey through Jaclyn's business endeavors and life over the past few years, and there is so much to learn along the way! The Tabernacle was a portable Temple in which the presence of God dwelled. Our Parsha begins with the fundraising effort to be conducted in the Wilderness where the nation was asked to donate the required materials for the construction of the Tabernacle, it's vessels, and the vestments of the high priest. In this enjoyable Parsha podcast we go deep and deeper on three different parts of the Parsha: we discuss the unusual ordering of the materials needed for the tabernacle; we probe the apparently conflicting definitions of cherubs; and we take a fascinating look at the unusual creature - the tachash - whose skin was used to create the upper curtain of the Tabernacle.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha Podcast is dedicated in loving memory and leilui nishmas Michael Ben Shmuel and Yehudit whose yahrzeit is this week, the 6th of Adar (1).
