Scarlet Estelle is an artist manager and developer. She's the membership director of REC Philly, and she's a member of the Philadelphia Recording Academy. She's also the creator and host of Andrea's favorite new(ish) podcast, Sugar, We're Going In, which explores Fall Out Boy's relationship with hip-hop. She's here today to talk about five of her favorite hip-hop moments in Fall Out Boy's career. She and Andrea also dive into their shared love for the band, Patrick's solo career, how Scarlet has continued to find inspiration in the way the members of FOB approach their music, the power of fangirls, how she strives to support and encourage new artists in her own career, and so much more. A Day Without Love is the solo project of multi-genre musician and artist Brian Walker. He joins us today to talk about his new album, A Stranger That You Met Before, which also happens to have been produced by our own Kitzy, so this episode is full of stories from the studio. Brian also talks to us about community and collaboration, writing multi-faceted music with layers of meaning, paying homage to early influences, and so much more. You can (and should!) pick up A Stranger That You Met Before now.Follow A Day Without Love on Instagram (@ADayWithoutLove) and TikTok (@ADayWithoutLoveBand) to keep up with Brian and catch him when he's in your area.
This week, Andrea and Jenn are joined by a Left of the Dial favorite. If you pay attention to leftofthedial.fm, you'll be familiar with Soft and Dumb from Jenn's review of their self-titled album a little over a year ago, as well as their interview for our Home Studio Stories shortly after that. And today, the Illinois-based duo are here to talk about their dreamy new EP Heaven, out November 17th (that's today). Today's guest is a repeat offender! Our listeners will know Zac Ross from one of the greatest pop-punk bands to come out of South Jersey, Man Overboard. He joined us last July to talk about his project Zachary Ross and the Divine, and he's joining us today to talk about his brand new hardcore project, Slighted. Their album This Means War came out Friday September 29th. In addition, Zachary Ross and the Divine also released a new EP, King Dopamine, on October 5th via SmartPunk Records. Zac joined Andrea and Jenn to talk about both of those releases, writing music like a horror movie, the difference between making hardcore and pop-punk, being honest with yourself, and why it's okay for women to lie. Most importantly, Andrea and Jenn would like to formally announce their position as co-managers for Zac's “Slighted Should Play the Gathering of the Juggalos” campaign. Superdestroyer is the solo project of the anonymous Ohio-based musician who is also the co-founder of Lonely Ghost Records. Superdestoryer's most recent album, SoakedInSynth.Zip was released in June. He joined Andrea and Jenn this week to talk about SoakedInSynth.Zip, making music that sounds like being stuck in your basement, making music that sounds like being outside, writing about your demons, running one of the coolest, most unique labels around, and living on the Island of Misfits Toys. This week on Left of the Dial, Andrea is joined by Gabby and Josh, from South Jersey's own Afloat. Gabby joined us way back in February to talk about booking bands as Head Above Water collective. But if you need another reminder, Afloat is, according to NJ.com's Bobby Olivier, “The best thing to hit Cherry Hill since Bahama Breeze opened at the mall.” That's high praise, if you ask us. Today, Afloat stops by to share some songs from their upcoming EP, Where I Stand, including a Left of the Dial exclusive premier of their new single, “Through My Veins.” You can stream it everywhere tomorrow, September 1st, but you'll get to hear first in this episode! This week's guest is one of our favorites over here at Left of the Dial. M.A.G.S. is the solo project of Buffalo-born, LA-based artist Elliott Douglas, and listeners of our podcast should be plenty familiar with M.A.G.S. We've been singing his praises for as long as Andrea has been hosting Left of the Dial, and definitely since 2021's Say Things That Matter, an album that we absolutely love. M.A.G.S.' third album, Destroyer, is out August 4th on Smartpunk Records, and he's with us today to talk about a few songs off of that album and a couple other songs he's brought along to share, too. We talk about finding beauty in total ruin, seeing your music in colors, connecting with others through art, and so much more. You know, we keep it light. This is a great conversation with a really thoughtful, unique artist, and we can't wait for our listeners to hear it.Pre-order Destroyer now!Keep up with M.A.G.S. in all the usual places.M.A.G.S. is going on tour. This week, Andrea sits down with Chris Payne to talk about his new book Where Are Your Boys Tonight? The Oral History of Emo's Mainstream Explosion 1999-2008. He's got a list of credits a mile long, covering music for publications like Alternative Press, Vulture, and Billboard where he spent seven years as a staff writer and podcast host covering alternative and independent music. Andrea and Chris talk about the various scenes that birthed the bands who ushered in the emo movement of the early 2000s and the songs that best represent that moment in time. Payne has curated such a vast collection of voices from every corner of the scene(s) at the time, from members of bands like Lifetime, Thursday, Fall Out Boy, and Taking Back Sunday, to the people who watched those bands skyrocket to emo royalty (Hanif Abdurraqib, Jamie Coletta, Chris Gethard). Seems like the year just started, but suddenly we're halfway through Spring? Instead of talking with a guest this week, Kitzy and Andrea wanted to share some of the music they've been listening to lately. For Andrea, that means a carefully selected handful of songs. Listeners will be familiar with this week's Left of the Dial guests because they're the team behind Sweet Juice Fest, a queer feminist musical festival that centers local diverse artists and creators from the Philadelphia region. Last year, the sold-out festival was held at Rigby Mansion in Germantown and featured some of our favorites here at Left of the Dial including Sug Daniels, Popcorn Daddy, and The Lunar Year, all of whom make up the Sweet Juice Fest collective and who joined Andrea on the show today to talk about this year's Sweet Juice Fest which will be held again in July. But even before that, they've got a really cool event coming up in just a few days, the Sweet Juice Fundraiser, which will be held on April 26th at Dolphin Tavern. Christian Lesperance is the mastermind behind Jersey Interchange, a collaboration series that reimagines the songs of the New Jersey punk, hardcore, emo, and ska scenes of the late 90s and early 2000s. Christian joins Andrea on the podcast today because Jersey Interchange is releasing its debut full-length album C1, out May 5th on Sinking Ship Records. C1 features covers of artists who made their name in the Jersey scene (bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart) covered by artists who also made their name in the Jersey scene (in bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart). This album is an absolute Jersey love fest, but it's also just a collection of really great covers of really great songs and an example of something really beautiful that celebrates collaboration and expression and community and all that good stuff we could use a little more of these days.Pre-orders for C1 have already started. They'll be celebrating the album with a release show on May 13th at Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham NJ. Folks from bands including Shades Apart, Vision, Lanemeyer, NJ Joystick, Avery, One cool Guy, right Turn Eddie and lots more will be taking turns playing acoustic sets, and the whole thing will be headlined by comedian and Jersey punk diehard, Chris Gethard. Lauren Denitzio of Worriers is back on Left of the Dial, and we're so excited to talk with them about their incredible new album, Warm Blanket, which is out April 7th–that's today if you're listening when this episode drops–on Ernest Jenning Record Co. It's Worriers' fourth full-length album, but it's their first release as a solo act and really demonstrates the breadth and depth of Lauren's talent as a songwriter, musician, and now, producer. Kitzy and Andrea loved getting to talk with Lauren about writing, playing, and producing just about every element on the album, how their influences do and don't show up in their music, the importance of well-placed reverb, and a whole lot more. Andrea recently launched a new podcast called The Watchers where she and her cohost Jodie Mim watch Jersey-focused movies and TV. They're kicking off their first season with the Showtime series Yellowjackets. If you haven't watched Yellowjackets, it's about what happened to a (fictional) New Jersey high school girls' soccer team who spent 19 months in the Canadian wilderness when their plane crashed there in 1996. The show follows the girls in 1996 and 2021. It's a total celebration of 90s nostalgia, in general, and 90s Jersey nostalgia, in particular. You can watch the series premiere for free. But really, all you need to know about that show to enjoy this episode is that it has the most incredible soundtrack full of some of the best music to come out of the 90s.Aside from talking about a few specific songs the show has used, we keep it spoiler free, so you don't need to be a Yellowjackets fan to enjoy this one. We also sneak in this incredible cover of "Because the Night" by Screaming Females and Garbage. It's not in the show, but you know. Jersey. If you're a Yellowjackets fan and decide to give The Watchers a listen, let Jodie and Andrea know what you think. And definitely give them a follow over on Twitter and Instagram. We continue our WXPN love fest this week with another one of the best in Philly radio! Kristen Kurtis is one of our favorite people in the Philly music scene. She's worked in radio in places like Spokane Washington and Austin Texas, but here in Philly, she hosts XPN's Morning Show and serves as the station's Assistant Music Director. She's also just a genuinely fun and cool person to talk to. She joined us back in February to share a few songs by some artists she loves and who represent some key moments in her radio journey that took her across the country and, lucky for us, back home to Philly. We are so excited to share this episode with one of our favorites over here at Left o'. John-Allison Weiss has been sharing their music with the world since 2007, releasing a handful of albums full of pop gems as catchy and radio-ready as they are earnest and introspective–a balance not everyone can get away with. Nic Brown is a graduate of Columbia University and the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop. He's a professor of creative writing and the author of the novels In Every Way, Doubles, and Floodmarkers. He's also a former (question mark) drummer whose forthcoming memoir Bang Bang Crash, out February 21st via Counterpoint, details his journey from high school student playing in the most popular band in Greensboro, NC to having a hugely popular song on the radio in the late 90s, when having a hugely popular song on the radio really seemed to mean something. He's played with artists such as Ben Lee, Longwave, and Skeleton Key and is a founding member of the band Athenaeum. Today's Left of the Dial guest is Dylan Gallimore, who Philly folks may be familiar with from his fantastic band Honeyjar (we're big fans), but today he's on the podcast to talk with us about his equally fantastic new project The Lower Aetna whose debut album Waiting For God to Turn on the Lights was released on November 4th. It's a really smart and thoughtful concept album about a family dealing with the fact that one of their members has become a deep believer in the QAnon conspiracy. Dylan shares his thoughtful perspective, taking us through the album's rotating points of view and what inspired him to begin writing it in the first place. And because–as two people from the best state in the country–they're legally required to, he and Andrea talk a bit about growing up in Jersey–specifically Dylan's idyllic upbringing in the straight-out-of-a-fairytale town of Medford Lakes. Franz Nicolay has maybe the longest and most varied resume of any Left of the Dial guest. You likely know him best from his work with The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society, and of course, his own solo work. He's also a novelist, travel writer, journalist, professor, and just an all around brilliant and thoughtful person. This week, he joins Andrea and our on-call substitute co-host Doug Keller to talk about so many things, including the long and winding process of making an album, writing fake songs for books, the art of the bridge, the necessity of revision, crying over Randy Newman, and, of course, Stephen Sondheim. We were so lucky to get to sit down with No Earbuds founder, Jamie Coletta. If you're unfamiliar with Jamie/No Earbuds, (impossible if you listen to our show), they're a wholly unique marketing/publicity/management/A&R/PR company and probably responsible, in one way or another, for introducing you to half of your favorite bands. They're one of those people who you can tell just absolutely loves music and helping spread the word on the bands and artists they love. Definitely a kindred spirit with the Left of the Dial crew. Jamie talks about John-Allison Weiss getting to make their new album the way they wanted, listening to The Wonder Years new masterpiece The Hum Goes on Forever in the studio with the band, what it means to sound like you're from Wilkes-Barre, and so much more! And hey, it's Bandcamp Friday. Why not pick up the songs you hear in today's episode and show these bands you love them! Check out https://www.noearbuds.com/ (No Earbuds). Chico Romano is the new-ish project from https://linktr.ee/chicoromano (Rob Romano), a Jersey-based musician who you might also know as the frontperson for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_Caveman (Professor Caveman). https://otherdesertcity.com/ (Forever Came Calling) is a band from Twentynine Palms, California. Their iconic pop-punk album, Contender, turns 10 this year, and to mark that anniversary, they're heading out on a https://otherdesertcity.com/tour (headlining tour) this summer, hitting just about every region in the US. We were so thrilled to talk with Joe Candelaria, the band's lead vocalist and songwriter, about getting back on the road after a two-year break, revisiting songs he wrote a decade ago, showing love to your influences, being gentle with your past self, and what your favorite Ninja Turtle says about your taste in pizza.
