Michael Lichter rode a motorcycle to the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, for the first time in 1979—44 years ago. He documented that trip with a camera from the seat of his Harley-Davidson Shovelhead. Little did Lichter know that inaugural visit to  the wildly popular biker party would lead to attending dozens more rallies and hundreds of other similar events and gatherings around the world.Lichter fell in love with photography when he was a kid. By age 13, he had a working darkroom set up in the basement of his parents' home. Even on school nights, he would work until the early hours of the morning, when his parents came knocking. Later, he began to focus his lens on the biker culture and the quickly expanding custom side of motorcycling. In 2000, Lichter produced his first “Motorcycles As Art” exhibition, which morphed into a themed annual event staged initially at the Journey Museum in Rapid City. When the show outgrew that venue, Lichter moved it to Sturgis. From 2009 through 2022, the world-renowned artist curated the exhibit in a 7,000-square-foot gallery built specifically to house the show at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. All our links: https://linktr.ee/driventoridepodcastBusiness Inquiries: hello@driventoridepodcast.com Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com

“Authenticity is earned through epic work” is one of Robert Pandya's favorite sayings, and indeed, Robert has done some epic work during his long and wild and varied career in the powersports industry. In fact, Pandya is a bit of a jack of all trades with experience in many aspects of marketing, from media relations to hosting and producing world-class events to creating content for digital and print publication. For the past two years, Robert has helped shape the future of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, known as “the best party anywhere.” But Robert's fascinating work experience is only one reason we asked him to be a guest on “Driven to Ride.” Robert is a motorcyclist to his core, and one of his passions is demonstrating ways for new riders to experience the joys of two wheels, whether it be on or off the road. In 2017, Pandya founded the “Give A Shift” initiative, a volunteer group effort intended to bring together creative and experienced people to pen a report and transcript of their conversations with the focus on improving the powersports business and encouraging a positive long-term future for motorcycling. Spend any time with Robert and you will definitely agree that he “gives a shift.”All our links: https://linktr.ee/driventoridepodcastBusiness Inquiries: hello@driventoridepodcast.com Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com

On today’s show we’re talking about an event that took place about a month ago. It made a few headlines at the time, but there’s been very little said about it ever since. There’s a global debate raging on the best way to handle the global pandemic. Let’s be clear, there is no good solution. There are three trade-offs to be made. 1) Protecting health for people who might be susceptible. 2) Minimizing damage to the economy through social isolation and quarantine activities 3) Protecting the health care system from being overwhelmed with hospitalizations Unfortunately, what is a scientific and economic problem has become politicized. At the end of the day, the virus doesn’t care what passport you hold, what political party affiliation you have, where you live, whether you’re old or young. Last month, there was a motorcycle rally that was held in Sturgis South Dakota over a 10 day period in which nearly 500,000 people descended upon a small town of about 7,000. This annual event brings people from all over the country. A new paper which examines this event was published last week by the IZA Institute for Economic Development, funded by The Deutsche Post. The paper is DP No. 13670 entitled: "The Contagion Externality of a Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and COVID-19". The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally represents a situation where many of the “worst case scenarios” for superspreading occurred simultaneously: the event was prolonged lasting 10 days, included individuals packed closely together, involved a large out-of-town population. Attendees to the events were only required to show that they had a mask in their possession, but were not required to wear it. The only large factors working to prevent the spread of infection was the outdoor venue, and low population density in the state of South Dakota. A month after the event, it looks like the number of cases in the community multiplied by a factor of 4-5. To be clear, the case counts in Meade county prior to the motorcycle rally were low. There were approximately 2 cases per 1,000 population. After the rally, the number grew to 9 cases 1,000 population. Not only that, but the event was also responsible for the spread of the disease in the communities where attendees originated from. The study used anonymized smartphone data from SafeGraph, Inc. They used the SafeGraph data to measure the number of non-resident visitors to the census block groups (CBGs) where Sturgis Motorcycle Rally events took place, (ii) trace those attendees back to their home counties, and (iii) measure stay- at-home behavior among residents of Meade County. South Dakota is one of the least densely populated states in the country. They naturally had social distancing built into their society. For that reason, South Dakota has had no restrictions on restaurant closings, no restrictions on social gatherings, no restrictions. They put the responsibility in the hands of residents and visitors to act responsibly. There is no mask wearing mandate, and there is no work from home requirement. The makeup of attendees was 0.9% from the local county, about 8.5% from other counties in South Dakota and close 90.7% from out of state. All of this data was provided by the smartphone pings. The authors of the study concluded that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generated public health costs of approximately $12.2 billion. The authors financial conclusions were flawed in my opinion, but the rest of the study was solid. This study is the first real petri dish experiment of a large gathering involving large numbers of people to a live event, and involving travel from many parts of the country into a single location. Since the study was published last week, I expect that it will play a role in shaping public health policy for governments around the world.

From the beginning of time people have set out on journeys of discovery and adventure in search of new lands, riches, food and sometimes I imagine, just for the sake of discovery with no idea or concept of an outcome. Perhaps with just the resolve that it WILL bring change and that change will mean good things to come. All great things, large and small have be borne of journey’s mated with discovery of one kind or another.  And it’s in hindsight that the journeys are seen as “good causes” - rarely in the moment. Most journeys have not only changed the lives of those whom experienced the journey first hand, but others as well. Sometimes through the discovery itself, new lands foods or ideas and other times just through connection and information and the telling of the story. The cynical observer may describe a motorcycle journey as a narcissistic hoarding of time and resources for lofty intangible ideas that benefit of now one. Yet when we hear these journeys that others have taken it fuels our imagination, jumpstarts ideas and creative thought for our own life and provides a window through which we glimpse, even if for a moment another way. Not all journeys are planned, some come about  through an event or outside forces. Michelle Lamphere is one of those adventurers.   Michelle Lamphere was born is South Dakota, Sturgis South Dakota. And yes that is the famous Sturgis that each year attracts hundreds of thousands of bikers to celebrate, well, I’m not sure what they are celebrating but it’s a big gathering and a huge party. Anyway, Michelle grew up seeing the event for both good and bad grow each year and because of that motorcycles were just a way of life for her. But riding for Michelle was limited to short runs on her Harley Davidson and the desire to meld the bike with adventure travel didn’t come until a stranger came to town. And when he did Michelle’s life took an unexpected sharp turn. More at www.adventureriderradio.com
