Throughout the month of April, Extra Serving is bringing you a new bonus content series: Get to Know a Nonprofit, highlighting nonprofit organizations that either benefit members of the restaurant industry or actively work through the restaurant industry to benefit others. Next up in Get to Know a Nonprofit is Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), the largest independent charity dedicated to childhood cancer research and family support in the U.S. The foundation has raised more than $300 million since it was founded in 2005, funding more than 1,500 cutting-edge research projects at nearly 150 institutions in North America and Europe. ALSF was initially founded by Alex Scott, who was just shy of 1 when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and 4 when she hosted her first lemonade stand to raise funds for cancer research. When Alex passed away at the age of 8, she had raised more than $1 million. Alex's mom and ALSF co-executive director Liz Scott joined the podcast to share more about Alex, the foundation, and how restaurants in particular are the perfect partners to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Show Notes: Raymond Lei Yin moved to New York after graduating and has worked at Goldman Sachs for over 20 years, primarily in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. He worked in China with a private fund for three and a half years and for UBS Asset Management as the Head of Asia Pacific and Head of China for the past 6 years. Now retired from UBS Asset Management, Raymond is currently traveling around the world, visiting his parents and enjoying the outdoors. He is also looking for opportunities to get involved with communities, businesses or organizations where he can contribute his expertise. Capital Markets War Stories Raymond shares many war stories from his time in Hong Kong, China, and the capital markets during the financial crisis. He started at Goldman Sachs in New York and eventually moved to Asia. He was a program analyst in 1992 and supported the international trading desk at Goldman. This experience was interesting, as the traders he worked with at the time were hires from Salomon Brothers and Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). He likens this time to working in a jungle where his goal was to survive each day. Raymond's journey has been filled with challenges and opportunities, but he is now focused on pursuing his passion for learning (especially in AI) and helping other businesses to grow. Working in Equity Capital MarketsRaymond began his career in Hong Kong after realizing that the core part of Goldman's business was financial advisory and trading. He decided to look for a job outside Goldman and was about to resign when he was offered a position by a senior MD looking for a Chinese speaking analyst based in Hong Kong. He flew to London for interviews and was hired to work in equity capital markets, which he knew little about. Equity capital markets is an interesting area that straddles between investment banking and equity sales and trading. Raymond was trained by Eric Dobkin, the man who introduced the concept of the Equity Capital Markets (ECM), which orchestrated IPOs and worked with both issuers and investors to set the price. During the Red Chip Boom in 1993, there was a huge demand for Chinese speaking bankers in Hong Kong, as there were not many Chinese bankers at that time. As the first full-time equity capital markets person based in Hong Kong, Raymond worked tirelessly to keep up with the pace of IPOs. Lesson Learned from the MarketOne lesson that Raymond learned during this time was that the market can be irrational. During the Red Chip Boom, Chinese IPOs were richly valued, due to scarcity of Chinese papers and the high demand for Chinese investments. However, since then, the market has seen several cycles of price fluctuations. To make money in the equity market, he believes that one must be a contrarian, have a long sustained power, and be liquid. In the early 90s, Hong Kong had an open market with many foreign capitals and traditional institutions representing their firms in London or New York. Goldman helped Chinese companies raise money in international capital markets through IPOs, global deposit receipts (GDRs), and convertible bonds (CBs). The Chinese government was involved in these deals, as they were selling their best assets to global investors in exchange for professional management and market discipline. The first deal was with Tsingtao Breweries, a famous beer company, and later with Shanghai Petrochemical and China Mobile and PetroChina. These companies were majority-held by the Chinese government, and Goldman had an edge in winning these deals. Goldman also worked on Korean companies like POSCO Steel and Samsung Electronics, as well as Thai and Indonesian companies. The Asian Financial Crisis The Asian financial crisis occurred in 1997, when the devaluation of the Thai Bhat and Indonesian Rupiah led to a massive attack in Hong Kong markets. For a few days, the entire HK equity market was dominated by one buyer, the Hong Kong government. Raymond saw the government's bid for 100 million shares of Hong Kong telecom got hit within 2 seconds. This could mark the end of capital markets in Hong Kong, as the government was buying the significant part of HK equity market. However, in hindsight this was the single best time to buy Hong Kong equities, as the Hong Kong government made a lot of money that day. In subsequent years, Goldman helped the Hong Kong government sell these stocks at a profit, returning the market to private investors. One company Raymond worked with was PetroChina where Goldman took the company public and Raymond helped to introduce the team management to global investors. It was during the dotcom bubble era, there was ver little investor appetite for oil stocks. Eventually, the IPO was done as a discount valuation. Investors who bought at PetroChina IPO all made money if they hold on to their shares. From Goldman to Private Funds to UBS Asset ManagementRaymond's next move was to the buy side - a China based private fund. He spent three and a half years traveling between Shanghai and Hong Kong to help them set up their international operation, hire people, lease office space, get the Type 9 license, and set up their Hong Kong office. He later joined UBS Asset Management first as Head of China then later as Head of Asia Pacific. He worked at UBS Asset Management for the past 6 years. Influential Harvard Professors and CoursesRaymond shares that his Art History course at Harvard was one of the most useful, as it allowed him to appreciate artwork and visit museums worldwide. He also enjoyed the core course Cultural Revolution taught by Professor Roderick MacFarquar, which was not offered in China. Alex's Lemonade Stand focuses on impacting lives of children with cancer through fundraising for critical research and awareness raising support for families and children with cancer. I love the work of this organization and have been a regular donor for a few years. When our youngest son, age 21 was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma last December, this organization became even more important to us. Only four cents of every dollar spent on cancer research at the NCI goes to research in pediatric cancers. So the work of this organization has taken on extra meaning for us. Last week, we told you about 11-year-old Liam in Ramona who had his lemonade stand stolen from him. All he wanted was to raise enough money to buy a new dirt bike. So we decided to put up the World's Largest Lemonade Stand in Ramona on Friday to help him get that bike. Ramona showed up big time to help out Liam and then we got a call from Scotty McCreery. He heard about Liam's story and worked with our friends at Escondido Cycle Center to get Liam the dirt bike of his dreams!
ICYMI - last Friday we threw the World's Largest Lemonade Stand in Ramona for 11-year-old Liam who had his stand stolen. The goal was to raise enough money for him to buy the dirt bike he was saving for. The community showed up for Liam, even making him a brand new lemonade stand! The big surprise was when Scotty McCreery called in to tell Liam he was getting him the dirt bike he wanted! So what about the money the community raised during the event? Liam took it to a local animal charity and donated it! If you're looking for a feel good story, this is it!
By now you've heard about 11-year-old Liam who had hsi lemonade stand stolen in Ramona. In this episode of Charity Therapy, Meghan and I are taking you on a wild ride from the wacky world of the Minnesota State Fair to the serious yet often misunderstood role of a nonprofit founder. We dive into the heart of the matter: what does it really means to start a nonprofit? Spoiler alert: unlike for-profits, it probably doesn't mean any cash in your pocket. Intrigued? Stick around to find out why this is so crucial for keeping charities honest and effective. We tackle a listener's query about founder rights when the board calls it quits. There's a big myth that founders have ownership rights, and we're here to bust that myth wide open. When a nonprofit closes, its assets go to another nonprofit, not into the founder's pocket. We know this can be a tough pill to swallow, especially if you're super passionate about your mission. We offer some advice on how to keep your cause alive, even if it means starting fresh. We chat about the tough realities of giving up control to a board and offer some fun, light-hearted moments to keep things balanced. So grab your favorite fair food (maybe skip the dill pickle lemonade) and join us for a deep dive into the ups and downs of nonprofit founding. In this episode, you will hear: What a nonprofit founder's role REALLY is What happens to the assets when a nonprofit closes its doors A listener question on whether founders have any rights after a nonprofit's board votes to dissolve Busting the myth that founders have ownership rights The emotional and legal aspects of letting go of a nonprofit The sometimes tricky relationship between a founder's vision and the board's decisions Starting a nonprofit means giving up control to the board Advice on how to keep your mission alive, even if it means starting a new venture from scratch Resources from this Episode Learn about nonprofit dissolution: birkenlaw.com/charity-therapy-podcast/ct115 Sign up for the Birken Law Email list: birkenlaw.com/signup Facebook page: www.facebook.com/birkenlaw Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. It's Thursday, September 5th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Sudanese conflict has displaced 8 million International Christian Concern reports the body of Christ continues to suffer in Sudan, Africa after civil war broke out in the country last year. The conflict has displaced over eight million civilians, including many religious minorities. Christians are a minority in the northeastern African country and have faced persecution for decades. Both sides in the civil war have targeted Christians through attacks on churches and even killing religious leaders. The Tahir Institute for Middle East Policy noted, “Muslims who converted to Christianity continued to be prosecuted and tortured, even though the ‘crime' of apostasy officially no longer existed in the statute books.” Sudan is ranked eighth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian. 14-year-old Georgia student killed 2 students and 2 teachers A 14-year-old student named Colt Gray opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday morning, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe, reports the Associated Press. The dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour's drive from Atlanta. At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher — were taken to hospitals with injuries. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith became emotional as he spoke during the briefing. SMITH: “I never imagined that I would be speaking to the media in my career over something that happened today, the pure evil that happened today. “This hits home for me. I was born and raised here. I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I'm proud of this school system. “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community, but I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. Love will prevail over what happened today.” The gunman is in custody. African Methodist Episcopal keeps ban against homosexual “marriage” The African Methodist Episcopal Church held its General Conference in Columbus, Ohio last month. The historically-black denomination, also known as the AME Church, has districts in the U.S. and Africa. At the recent conference, AME voted to keep its ban on faux homosexual marriage. In contrast, the United Methodist Church voted in favor of such vile passion relationships earlier this year. Since Roe overturned, attacks on pro-life centers have increased The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade back in 2022. Since then, state governments have been increasing their attacks on pro-life groups. Daniel Schmid with Liberty Counsel told The Christian Post, “We saw attacks on pro-life centers significantly occur across the country after Dobbs, and now it has transitioned from criminals who are engaging in vandalism and threats to state efforts, government-backed efforts, to suppress the speech and views and sheer existence of the crisis pregnancy centers.” Pro-life groups are now having to fight for their free speech in states like New York and Massachusetts. U.S. abortions are up Meanwhile, the number of abortions in the U.S. are up since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The pro-abortion group Society of Family Planning released their latest data. The average number of abortions per month between January and March of this year was 98,990. Chemical abortions are on the rise through virtual visits, allowing doctors to ship abortion kill pills to other states. These so-called “telehealth abortions” averaged nearly 20,000 per month between January and March. In Matthew 15:19-20, Jesus reminds us, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. These are the things that defile a person.” Kamala leads in Wisconsin and Michigan; Trump leads in Arizona CNN released a new poll of voters in six battleground states ahead of the presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris leads in Wisconsin and Michigan. Former President Donald Trump leads in Arizona. The two candidates are nearly tied in Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. However, many voters are undecided. Fifteen percent of respondents across the battleground states said they have not firmly decided their choice for president. Americans are getting more isolated and lonely The Survey Center on American Life released a report on social isolation in the U.S. The report noted Americans are losing touch with their social networks as loneliness and isolation increase. Americans are generally not involved in social groups with the exception of religious ones. Religious organizations draw from both the less educated and the college-educated. Although, those with less education are becoming increasingly unattached. Also, young adults are also becoming unattached from the church. Only 28% are members of a religious organization compared to 43% of seniors. Thief steals kids' lemonade stand money And finally, two children from Virginia have become a national example of forgiveness, reports CBN News. Over the heat of summer, 10-year-old Rebecca Caldwell and her 8-year-old brother Joshua opened a lemonade stand in front of their house in Chesapeake. Sadly, a man dropped by seemingly for a drink, only to make off with the children's earnings of $40. As the story spread, the Caldwells used it as an opportunity to talk about forgiveness. REPORTER: “Why did you pray for the man who stole your money?” JOSHUA: “Because I wanted him to become a Christian.” Rebecca had this thought. REBECCA: “I just think it's better to forgive than to just to always be mad at the guy, because then you're just always going to think back on the day and be like, ‘Oh, I'm so mad at that guy.'” And their mother, Mrs. Caldwell, weighed in about the importance of forgiveness. MRS. CALDWELL: “We've talked a lot about forgiveness in our interviews, Some people have asked why we choose to forgive. If God can do all this through a lemonade stand, he can do it through anything. He can do the impossible. “We just want people to know that God forgave us. So, we can forgive other people.” In response, the community organized a lemonade event that raised over $6,000 for the kids. The youngest of 7 siblings, Rebecca and Joshua are giving some to their eldest sibling to fund her missionary trip to Asia. In Mark 11:25, Jesus said, “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, September 5th, in the year of our Lord 2024. (00:00-28:49) – Query & Company opens on a Friday with Jake Query and Jimmy Cook live from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of Sunday's Brickyard 400! They open the show by thanking everyone for coming out to the Back 9 event yesterday, the importance of NASCAR returning to the oval this weekend, provide an update on how things are going at The Open for show favorite, Santiago de la Fuente, and start previewing Colts training camp. (28:49-39:20) – Jake and Jimmy continue their NFL conversation from the tail end of last segment by discussing which teams could flop that people are selecting as a trendy team like the Jacksonville Jaguas last season. Some candidates include the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and others. (39:20-44:23) – Hour one concludes with Jake and Jimmy sharing which team they believe will break through this season like the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans did a season ago. (44:23-1:08:14) – Hour number two from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Jake Query and Jimmy Cook starts with Jake asking Jimmy to explain the Microsoft outage that is currently going on because he doesn't fully understand what's going on. Then, Jake asks Jimmy what the second biggest storyline for the Indianapolis Colts in training camp is. It leads to a larger discussion about the tight end room. Finally, they bring back the 2-Minute Drill featuring WLWT's Charlie Clifford in Cincinnati to preview Bengals training camp and the second half of the season for the Reds. Also, DetroitLions.com's Tim Twentyman joins to highlight some of the things the Lions must work on during camp before the season starts. (1:08:14-1:26:28) – John Oreovicz joins Query & Company to highlight the first Brickyard 400 from 30 years ago with NASCAR back on the oval this weekend, compares how different the NASCAR stock cars are this year compared to the last time that racing fans watched them on the oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and states that the NASCAR doesn't need the Brickyard 400 to reach the peak levels of fan attendance like it did back in the early stages. (1:26:28-1:29:00) – Jake and Jimmy close out the second hour of the program by pointing out the snacks that Kurt Darling has inhaled in the media center during their show at IMS. (1:29:00-1:56:36) – Kevin Bowen from the Wake-Up Call with KB & Andy joins Jake Query and Jimmy Cook to begin the final hour of the show to weigh in on the tight end debate from earlier in the show, shares what he believes will be different when it comes to schemes with Anthony Richardson quarterbacking the Colts this season, believes that Jonathan Taylor could lead the league in carries if he remains healthy for the entire season considering the situation he's in, and states that he wouldn't be surprised if they didn't add a veteran running back when rosters start being trimmed down to 53. (1:56:36-2:05:59) – As we do every Friday on Query & Company, Jake shares a Good For The Heart story that is sponsored by Franciscan Health by sharing a story about a 13-year-old boy that is having his 9th Lemonade Stand & Bake Raffle next weekend. His mother joins the show to tell his story and how they started this event that sends all the money raised to a good cause! (2:05:59-2:11:47) – Today's show ends with Jimmy sharing his JCook Plays of the Day and Jake cracking the code behind Kurt Darling's munchies. Plus, they preview their weekends!Support the show: https://1075thefan.com/query-and-company/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: 4:05pm- Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL)—U.S. Representative for Florida's 19th Congressional District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss President Joe Biden's executive order intended to address the unmitigated disaster at the U.S. Southern border. Rep. Donalds explains that the only reason Biden is even acknowledging there is a problem at the border is because “his polling sucks.” Donalds says Biden's newfound interest in the Southern border amounts to the president “gaslighting the American people” into believing he has always sought to resolve the problem, and hilariously exclaims “this guy is a loser!” Rep. Donalds will be taking part in “Congress, Cognac, & Cigars”—also featuring Rep. Wesley Hunt and Michele Tafoya. The event is tonight at The Cigar Code in Philadelphia, PA. Doors open at 6:00pm. 4:30pm- How much should kids charge for lemonade being sold from a stand with all proceeds going to charity? $1 a cup? $5 a cup (because of Biden's inflation)? Or do you adopt a “pay what you want” method and attempt to guilt people into donating massive amounts per cup. 4:40pm- On Tuesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the House Judiciary Committee. During one notable exchange, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) grilled Garland over Matthew Colangelo leaving the Department of Justice and immediately taking a job in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office ahead of the “hush money” trial involving Donald Trump. 4:45pm- Comedian Bill Maher said he is voting for Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, but he knows Biden is going to lose. 4:50pm- While speaking to the press on Tuesday, Senator John Kennedy joked that President Joe Biden is “polling right up there with fungal infections.”
