Today is a conversation between a pastor and a farmer. What might working the land, protecting local economies, and nurturing Christian communities have in common? We'll be speaking with Mary Berry, executive director of the Berry Center, and daughter of poet, farmer, and essayist Wendell Berry. My fellow interviewer today is the Rev. Clint Wilson, rector of St. Francis in the Fields, Harrods Creek, KY, not far from the Berry Center. We talk about joy of hard work, and hard work that is good work. Growing up with Wendell Berry as a dad. Faith and farming. Decisions to live with or against a given landscape. What is home? How do you make a home and dedicate yourself to it? The thick fabric of a place, and how work might be interwoven with neighbors, family, and seasons. What does it mean to actually "Love your neighbor as yourself"? We'll also touch on special challenges the suburbs pose to meaningful life together.Mary Berry, Executive Director of The Berry Center, grew up at Lanes Landing Farm in Henry County, KY. She has farmed for a living in Henry County, and started The Berry Center in 2011 to continue the agricultural work of John Berry, Sr. and his sons, author Wendell Berry and former Kentucky state senator, the late John M. Berry, Jr. The Berry Center focuses on issues confronting small farming families in Kentucky and around the country.Hear Mary speak at the Living Church conferenceLearn more about the Berry Center or Home Place MeatGive to support this podcast

Galva Mayor Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to recap the Monday City Council meeting. The American Legion begins poppy sales for Memorial Day and invites volunteers to place flags at Galva Cemetery on May 11, 2025, meeting at 7 AM. Citywide cleanup runs June 16–21, with pickup available on June 16th; contact Galva City Hall at 309-932-2555  for details, especially regarding tire disposal fees. Galva acquired 44 acres near the park district, and the park district is looking to expand recreational areas. The park district intends to use the five acres to add a parking area, soccer field, and ball diamond. The city is still installing the solar arrays, and when completed, residents will have the option to purchase electricity from the solar array. Mayor Volkert said the city will never ask you for financial information. If you have questions regarding individuals going door-to-door selling electricity, contact City Hall. The city has demolished some dilapidated buildings, and they have one building left. Anyone interested in opening a business in the final building or building on the land from demolished buildings should contact Galva City Hall for more information. The park district taxing boundaries need to match the city boundaries, so land around the ethanol plant has been annexed into the city, allowing for a larger tax base for the Galva Park District. Galva added a couple of trinkets and pictures to the Henry County time capsule, which will be opened far into the future.

Alabama Couple Arrested After Discovery of Decomposed Body in Freezer at Former Residence

An Alabama couple, Michael Shane Halstead, 44, and Karen Tysinger Halstead, 43, have been arrested and charged with one count each of abuse of a corpse after the severely decomposed body of their 19-year-old son, Logan Michael Halstead, was allegedly found stuffed in a freezer behind their recently vacated home. The grisly discovery unfolded on October 29 when the new owners of the property, who had plans to dispose of the freezer in the yard, found it too heavy to load onto a trailer. Upon attempting to clean it, they were met with a horrifying sight—a hand inside the overturned freezer. Promptly contacting authorities, deputies arrived at the scene at 11:37 a.m. Sheriff Eric Blankenship of Henry County confirmed the arrests and hinted at the possibility of additional charges, including murder, as the investigation is in its early stages. "We're only on day one of the investigation, so other potential charges could still be pending," Sheriff Blankenship stated. The Halsteads were located in Jack, Alabama, approximately 50 miles west of the home, several hours after the discovery. They were transported back to Henry County, where detectives interviewed them. The couple was subsequently booked into Henry County Jail. Authorities believe that Logan Halstead's body had been in the freezer since late August. Shockingly, Michael had confessed to placing his son's remains in a non-working freezer weeks before the gruesome discovery. The confession occurred on October 11, following the couple's departure from the Headland property. However, during a prior police inspection of the freezer, the body was not found. Logan, who had spina bifida and various medical issues, was described in court testimony as having been wrapped in tarps and blankets and placed inside a cardboard box. Michael claimed to have suffered a manic episode, unable to recall the circumstances leading to his son's placement in the freezer. In a bizarre twist, on the same day as Michael's alleged confession, he was arrested by Dothan Police for failing to appear in court on domestic violence charges, spending ten days in jail. The Halsteads, who had been renting the property, moved away without paying rent sometime after August 2023. The landlord subsequently sold the home to its current owners, who made the shocking discovery while cleaning their newly acquired property. Logan Halstead's body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. They made their first court appearance on Monday afternoon, with a bond of $175,000 each.
