Aganaanooru 296 – The furore of rumours

In this episode, we listen to an emphatic refusal, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 296, penned by Madurai Peralavayaar. The verse is situated amidst the gushing rivers of the ‘Marutham’ or ‘Farmlands landscape’ and narrates scenes of celebration in the domain of a famous Pandya king. In this crisp trip to the farmlands, we get to witness familiar scenes of romping about, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the man, when he had returned after leaving the lady to go court a courtesan: “With that dark-skinned maiden, having tresses, adorned with the fragrant pollen from clusters of blooming flowers, akin to flowering garlands, on the short-legged Portia tree, and radiant, red-streaked, rain-like eyes, you had rested in the fragrant orchards yesterday. Today too, after playing with her in the gushing waters of the Vaigai river, you come here, and stand with your chest, still moist. Did you think it was possible for you to hide all this from us? Those men, who gather heaps of fish in the seas, bring along shells in their catch and sell it in exchange for that delightful, well-filtered toddy in the city of ‘Koodal', ruled by the King of Korkai, one of immense fame, one who wields arrogant, strong elephants, tall chariots and victorious spears, having the name of ‘Chezhiyan'. Akin to the uproar that brims over in the streets of ‘Koodal' with mansions, soaring akin to peaks, spreads slander in our town, from the mouths of many, many.” Time to stroll these lands of plenty and learn more! The confidante starts by describing the courtesan as a maiden who has dark skin, whose tresses waft with the scent of Portia tree flowers and whose eyes are rain-like. So much praise for an adversary! Returning, next she tells the man that he had spent his time with the said courtesan, resting together in the orchards and then today, he had taken to playing with the courtesan in the new floods of the Vaigai river. After all this, he has the gall to come and act as if nothing has happened, standing so audaciously, with a moist chest that too, the confidante adds. She asks him whether he thought he could hide his antics from the lady and herself. Then she switches tracks and goes on to describe the valour of King Chezhiyan, the conqueror of many battlefields and his capital of ‘Koodal’, referring to the contemporary city of ‘Madurai’, and how people from the shores would arrive to the streets of this world-famous city, to barter their shells for its delicious toddy. The confidante concludes by asking the man to reflect on the kind of buzz that would rise from the streets of Koodal and connects by saying that’s how loud the gossip about the man’s meanderings were, in their town! In essence, it’s a strict ‘No’ to the man for his request to enter the lady’s home. Yet again, it’s a depiction of the state of wandering and quarrelling, in the land of riches. Within these pages, however, we get to travel in time and glimpse the buzzing streets of Koodal, and witness scenes involving trade and toddy, the seemingly age-old preoccupations of humans everywhere!

In this episode, Pete welcomes Anand Pandya, VP and GM of Specialty Solutions for SMBs at ADP, for a timely conversation on the rise of embedded technology and why payroll is becoming mission-critical infrastructure inside modern SaaS platforms. Anand shares why small businesses are increasingly overwhelmed by fragmented back-office software, often juggling multiple systems for payments, accounting, cash flow, employee data, and payroll.  Pete and Anand explore why payroll is uniquely complex as an embedded financial solution, from employee data and tax jurisdictions to deductions, state registrations, garnishments, worker's compensation, retirement mandates, and ongoing regulatory change. They also discuss why SaaS providers cannot treat payroll as a tech-only add-on and why the technology matters, but so do service, compliance support, onboarding, regulatory updates, and the ability to help small businesses when payroll gets complicated.   The conversation also looks ahead to where embedded payroll is headed next, including the growing role of AI, self-service support, real-time compliance prompts, and the movement toward SaaS platforms becoming the operational hub for small businesses. State Boosts Childcare Spending

Dutchess, Putnam faced funding shortages More funding is on the way for families who were turned away for childcare assistance when Putnam and Dutchess counties suspended their programs last summer. Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers agreed last month to provide $2.4 billion in the 2026-27 budget for the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), a 40 percent increase. It also includes $630 million in supplemental funds for 2025-26. Demand for the program, which covers most of a family's childcare costs, skyrocketed when the state began allowing people with higher incomes to qualify. Income limits now range from $79,215 annually for a two-person family to $153,770 for a six-person household. Most families that qualify will pay no more than $15 per week as their share, according to the state. By September, when Dutchess and Putnam stopped taking applications, there were 1,079 children enrolled in Dutchess, compared to 706 in January 2020, according to the state Office of Children and Family Services. Putnam also experienced a significant increase — from 30 children to 118 — during the period. Dutchess, which received $12.7 million in base funding for CCAP in 2025-26, resumed taking applications on March 1 (see dub.sh/dutchess-child). Putnam, which was sent $1.1 million, still has a notice on the Department of Social Services webpage about the earlier hold on new applications. Hochul and state legislators "appear to have fully funded CCAP," said Himali Pandya, executive director of the Child Care Council of Dutchess and Putnam, but "the jury's still out" on whether $2.4 billion will be enough. Along with more money for CCAP, the budget includes funding for school districts to expand pre-K programs for 4-year-olds and $20 million for a pilot program in Dutchess County to provide childcare for 1,000 infants and children up to age 3. Dutchess, chosen along with Broome and Monroe counties for pilots, is considered a childcare "desert" — meaning it has more than 3 children under 5 years old for each childcare spot. In January, Hochul visited the Day One Early Learning Community in Poughkeepsie to announce that the pilot funding would be in her budget proposal. Founded in 2021, the nonprofit's primary initiative is an 11-week paid program for people who want to work at daycares, open their own or apply their credentials toward associate degrees at Dutchess Community College or Columbia-Greene Community College. Of Day One's 129 graduates, 86 percent are working in childcare, said Madeline Henriquez, its executive director. Day One also operates an 89-seat, five-classroom early-learning center, hosts groups for parents and provides technical assistance to people who want to open childcare centers or home-based programs. It is partnering with Hudson River Housing and Vassar Brothers Medical Center to renovate two houses that will become the county's first 24/7 childcare programs. There is one glaring shortfall in New York's childcare spending: funding to supplement the pay of the educators who are often paid only minimum wage, which is $16 in Dutchess, Putnam and the rest of upstate. The state Senate proposed $500 million in grants to supplement childcare workers' pay, but the proposal failed to make the budget. That leaves the status quo intact for students pursuing degrees in early childhood education at schools like Dutchess Community College, said Pandya. "Kids go through it, and then they go work at Amazon because they can make more money," she said. "Unless we can pay educators what they deserve, we're just not going to be able to retain them."

Episode Overview With Dr. Drew Lansdown away (and reportedly playing golf in Scotland), Brian and Nirav dive deep into the sports medicine landscape of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The episode covers the unique injury patterns in soccer, what surgeons and physicians need to understand about treating elite soccer players, and the injury prevention strategies that have strong data behind them. Key Topics Covered Why Soccer Produces High Rates of Non-Contact Injuries • ACL tears are the defining non-contact injury in soccer ◦ Soccer is the #1 sport played by female athletes — a population with well-established higher ACL tear rates ◦ Quick acceleration, deceleration, and multi-directional cutting movements are intrinsic to the sport ◦ Cognitive load during play (split-second decision-making while in the air) increases landing mechanics risk ◦ Classic example: the Wayne Rooney-type ACL — trying to split a defender while thinking two steps ahead leads to a mis-step • Game structure contributes to higher injury numbers ◦ 11 players per side means more total athletes on the field ◦ Longer games (90 minutes vs. basketball or football quarters) ◦ Combined effect: more player-hours of exposure per match Load Management & the World Cup Context • The World Cup paradox: fewer games per week than top club players are used to ◦ Example: Erling Haaland at Manchester City — club season + qualifiers + Champions League stacks up to more games/week than the World Cup ◦ The bigger concern is cumulative seasonal load, not the World Cup schedule itself • The World Cup is essentially an off-season add-on for elite players ◦ Comparable to asking NBA athletes to play the NBA season and then immediately compete in the Olympics • Travel is likely less of a factor than commonly assumed ◦ Elite clubs already manage heavy international travel; accommodations are often top-tier • Early specialization a compounding factor ◦ Many World Cup players have been playing since age 10–13 with little cross-sport participation, contributing to long-term cumulative load ◦ Notable exception: Norway — athletes there tend to play multiple sports ACL Surgery Considerations for Soccer Players • Graft selection overview ◦ Bone-Patellar Tendon-Bone (BPTB): traditional gold standard — caveat is patella fracture risk with early falls onto the knee ◦ Quad Tendon: recent JBJS meta-analysis showed marginal superiority, but difference not clinically significant; less commonly used in soccer given importance of quad strength ◦ Hamstring ± Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis (LAT): widely used in the Premier League, largely driven by the influence of Andy Williams' work with top clubs • Return-to-play timeline ◦ Uniformly 9–12 months regardless of graft choice ◦ Phased rehab: gait & coordination → strength → agility → sport-specific • Key structural differences in elite soccer player care ◦ Academy pipeline provides high-quality early medical access — similar to minor league baseball feeder systems ◦ Bracing: elite soccer players use far fewer post-op braces and return-to-sport braces vs. American football or basketball athletes ◦ Less post-op bracing is not associated with worse outcomes in this population Hamstring Injuries in Soccer • Most common injury type in soccer globally • High-speed sprinting is the primary mechanism ◦ The hamstring functions eccentrically during the late swing phase of sprinting — peak load occurs just before foot strike ◦ The injury moment is often at the point of maximal lengthening under force • Grading and prognosis ◦ Grade 1 (mild strain): return in 1–2 weeks ◦ Grade 2 (partial tear): 3–6 weeks depending on location and extent ◦ Grade 3 (complete rupture or proximal avulsion): potentially surgical; weeks to months • Proximal hamstring avulsions deserve specific attention ◦ Complete proximal avulsions (from the ischial tuberosity) are increasingly managed operatively in athletes ◦ Strong evidence for surgical repair in high-demand athletes who want to return to competitive sport • Nordic hamstring curls: effective prevention tool (discussed later in injury prevention section) Ankle Injuries • Lateral ankle sprains are extremely common in soccer ◦ The ATF (anterior talofibular ligament) is most commonly injured ◦ Mechanism: plantar flexion + inversion, often from landing on another player's foot • The challenge of ankle turf toe and high ankle sprains ◦ Syndesmotic (high ankle) injuries are less common but significantly longer recovery — 6–10+ weeks • World Cup-specific context: artificial turf used in some venues ◦ Turf surfaces change force transmission through the ankle and may increase injury risk compared to natural grass Muscle Cramps: A World Cup Staple • Muscle cramping is ubiquitous in World Cup play — especially in heat/humidity ◦ Not a sign of poor conditioning — even elite players cramp ◦ Players accustomed to cooler climates (Northern Europe) are particularly susceptible • Mechanism: combination of dehydration, electrolyte depletion, and neuromuscular fatigue • Cramping is functionally debilitating even though it is not a structural injury • Treatment/prevention: aggressive electrolyte repletion ◦ Pickle juice: Brian and Nirav discuss — strong evidence in ultra-endurance contexts; electrolyte content is the likely mechanism ◦ Bananas, electrolyte drinks, gels — all have their place ◦ "Anything that repletes electrolytes" will help — athlete preference matters The Theatrics — Diving, Flopping & the Mystery Spray • Why do elite athletes go down so dramatically? ◦ Getting kicked in an unprotected lower extremity genuinely hurts — shin guards are getting smaller (Nirav jokes about a quarter-sized guard his daughter uses) ◦ Foul strategy: falling can draw calls or stop play — gamesmanship is real • The spray — what is it? ◦ Best evidence: a topical cooling spray similar to Icy Hot or ethyl chloride ◦ Temporarily numbs the skin and superficial nerve endings at the contusion site ◦ Not a structural fix — purely symptomatic/neurological effect on acute pain ◦ The shock of impact often wears off naturally — the spray may assist with that transition Injury Prevention — What the Data Actually Shows • FIFA 11+ Program ◦ Developed by FIFA and extensively validated in peer-reviewed literature ◦ Components: core strengthening, glute/hamstring activation, agility drills ◦ Consistent reduction in injury rates by approximately 50% ◦ How to find it: search "FIFA 11+ injury prevention" (not just "FIFA 11" — that returns the video game) ◦ Widely implemented at elite levels; underutilized in youth soccer where practice time is dominated by skill drills and scrimmaging • Nordic Hamstring Curls ◦ Strong and growing evidence for both hamstring injury prevention AND ACL injury risk reduction ◦ Works by strengthening the hamstring eccentrically — addressing the exact mechanism of hamstring strains ◦ Compliance challenge: extraordinarily difficult to perform correctly, especially in older athletes ◦ Brian and Nirav agree: nearly impossible to complete a full set, especially with added weight • Implementation gap: what gets done vs. what works ◦ Youth coaches prioritize the "fun stuff" — drills, scrimmage — over warm-up protocols ◦ 15 minutes of evidence-based warm-up is a hard sell when kids are paying for club-level coaching and want to play Clinical Pearls for Practitioners • Graft selection for soccer players is multifactorial — consider quad strength demands and fall-on-knee risk before defaulting to BPTB • Post-op bracing: the European/Premier League model of minimal bracing in elite soccer players is worth considering — less may be more in highly compliant athletes • Proximal hamstring avulsions in competitive athletes warrant surgical consultation — non-operative outcomes in this population are often unsatisfactory • Cramping ≠ poor conditioning — counseling athletes and families on this distinction is important • FIFA 11+ should be part of any soccer athlete's injury prevention conversation, especially in youth programs • Nordic curls: prescribe them, warn patients they are difficult, and set realistic expectations Quotable Moments "The World Cup paradoxically is actually fewer games per week than a lot of these players are used to." — Dr. Feeley "It's like asking NBA athletes to come in, play the NBA season, and then play in the Olympics." — Dr. Feeley on cumulative load "Our youngest now uses something the size of a quarter... that's her shin guard." — Dr. Pandya on evolving shin guard trends "Nordic curls are almost impossible. That's why you see people doing them." — Dr. Feeley "Anything that repletes electrolytes is going to be beneficial." — Dr. Feeley on cramping management Please subscribe to our podcast at Apple PodcastsCheck out our website on Simplecast

The verse is situated amidst the flourishing fields of the ‘Marutham’ or ‘Farmlands landscape’ and describes a famous battle from this era. In this trip to the fields, in addition to taking in sights of the domain, we go on a detour to an ancient battlefield, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the man, when he seeks entry into the lady’s house, after having left to be in the company of a courtesan: “The male snail with a split mouth and a coarse-skinned belly, unites with its mate, living in the deep waters of the pond, where the sharp-nosed sand-eel stands as its witness, in the brimming waters of the wide fields in your prosperous town, O lord! They say that yesterday, with the woman you desire, the one having tresses adorned with flowers, you played together in the wide river, by the cool orchards, filled with the pollen of Portia trees. The slander that soars now is louder than the unceasing uproar that arose in Azhunthoor, when King Karikalan of great renown, filled with immense prowess and fury, destroyed the strength of those famous kings – the eleven Velir kings and the other two southern emperors – and made their resounding drums to be lost in the battlefield, when they rose against him with enmity at Venni Vayil, renowned for its festivities and its toddy!” Time to listen to the tale unfolding amidst the plenty! The confidante starts with a description of a male snail uniting with its mate, in the presence of a sand-eel, amidst the overflowing waters of the fields in the lord’s town. Then she reveals how people were talking about the fact that the man had been romping around with a courtesan and playing in the river, by the shade of the Portia trees, the previous day. The confidante concludes by saying that this slander was louder and even more ceaseless than the din that arose in the town of Azhunthoor, when King Karikaalan defeated not one, not two, but eleven Velir Kings and the Chera and Pandya kings as well, when they had risen against him at Venni Vayil. In essence, this is a refusal by the confidante to allow the man to enter the lady’s house, citing his association with a courtesan. A subtle reference to the firm power a Sangam woman seems to have had in such circumstances, of preventing her husband from entering their home, even if he happened to be the wealthy lord of the prosperous town!

Right now, in that picturesque forest, which has been showered by clouds of the rainy season, swarms of beautiful bees buzz around fragrant wild jasmines in the evening hour. Lo behold! That time has come! Hasten, O charioteer, and wield your well-crafted, decorated, tall chariot! Those who harvest paddy beat on the ‘thannumai drums', having a folded leather cover, to chase away birds, heading from many flowered groves, from those fertile fields with ripe paddy grains, in the town of ‘Sirukudi', ruled by ‘Vaanan'. That young maiden with shining bangles, has tresses that waft with the scent of the moist orchards in Vaanan's Sirukudi! Rush on, O charioteer, so that I can embrace her arms soon!” Time to speed along with this traveller through the forests! The man starts by talking about how he had come to serve his king, a scion of the Pandya dynasty, who had extended the shade of his rule to the world entire. An exaggeration, no doubt, but we can read it as ‘world as they knew it’! This King had claimed victory in the battlefield and so the man’s mission was complete. While that was good news, the season of rains, which was his promised season of return, had already arrived and was make the forests smile with wild jasmines, inviting the bees in the evening hour. At this time, the man asks his charioteer to speed on and take him to his lady, whose tresses he places in parallel to the many-flowered, moist orchards in the town of ‘Sirukudi’, ruled by ‘Vaanan’, a place filled with lush paddy fields, where people used beat their drums to chase away birds that came to raid ripe grains. The man concludes by telling his charioteer that he wished for nothing more than embracing his beloved’s arms as soon as possible! In essence, it’s a ‘take me home, right now’ message, celebrating the beauty of the lady and acknowledging the changing seasons. That moment of reunion that a person who had parted away yearns for, that’s something that’s a constant across the ages, and across the miles of this world! These words from the past seem to tell us, ‘No matter how great a mission we have accomplished, nothing can match the joy of being back in the presence of love’!

In this episode, we listen to words of assurance, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 201, penned by Maamoolanaar. Set in the ‘Paalai’ or ‘Drylands landscape’, the verse reveals aspects of Pandya and Chozha kingdoms. In this trip to the drylands, we take a detour to the Pandya and Chozha country, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the lady, when the man continues to remain parted away, having left to earn wealth to claim the lady’s hand in marriage: “Listen my friend, may you live long! You say to me, ‘Wearing well-etched head ornaments made of gold that glow resplendently, battle elephants of the victorious Pandya king stand proudly, near the shores of Korkai, celebrated for its immense fame, as daughters of pearl-divers, wearing leaf attires around their radiant, striped uplifted waists, spread sparkling pearls and right-whorled conch shells on those cool shores, at that precious time when the sun sets. Akin to how the formidable, huge ocean there would rise high with a roar, slander does soar around town. Hearing this, with sleepless eyes, mother keeps sighing loudly'. Worrying so, don't feel so helpless, my dearest! Even if he were to attain the fine country of the Chozhas, which yield unceasing mounds of white paddy, he is not someone who will stay there, content. Indeed the one, who has left to the drylands with a prolonged summer, near the slopes of the mountains with sky-soaring peaks, where a male sloth bear with huge hands and a fierce mouth, frolics with its coarse-haired cub, which looks like a bundle of darkness, and its mate with skinny breasts, will not stay away for anything!” Time to explore the scorching drylands path! The confidante starts by inviting the lady’s attention and repeating the worry running through the lady’s mind. To do that, she zooms on to ornamented battle elephants belonging to the Pandya kings, victorious in war, as they stand near the shore of the famous town of Korkai. Here, the daughters of pearl divers are performing a special ceremony, by spreading pearls and conch-shells, possibly a festival of gratitude for the king’s victories in the battlefield. This happens at dusk, and at this time, the seas nearby would rise high and roar, the confidante details, and connects it to the slander that was similarly soaring in town about the lady’s relationship with the man. The lady was worried because Mother had heard these rumours and was lying sleepless, sighing ceaselessly. Now, the confidante asks her friend not to feel so anxious and helpless and she promises that the man who had left to the drylands, would not stay there, even if he were to be given the country of the Chozhas, known for its unceasing yield of paddy. The confidante concludes with a description of the place, where the man has left, talking about how in that scorched domain, where summer does not want to part, a male sloth bear finds the means to frolic with its cub and mate! In the scene of the sloth bear family, the confidante places a metaphor for how the man would soon return and rejoice with his beloved. Yet again, the message we recently encountered, about how no amount of wealth would keep away a man from the lady he loves, echoes aloud. But here, the context differs, and we are presented with a bonus gift of intriguing images that echo the glory and prosperity of ancient Tamil kingdoms!

In this episode of the Everyday Business Problems podcast, Dave Crysler sits down with Sagar Pandya, founder, AI strategist, and cybersecurity expert, to unpack why most organizations are approaching AI adoption the wrong way. After selling his IT and cybersecurity company, Sagar launched Special AI to help businesses adopt AI with confidence, clarity, and real-world results. Together, they dig into why the rush to implement AI tools without foundational readiness leads to wasted spend, failed pilots, and frustrated teams. Using real examples from manufacturing, finance, logistics, and service businesses, this conversation lays out a practical diagnostic framework and reveals why culture, not technology, is the true make-or-break factor in AI success. What You'll Discover: Why most organizations skip the diagnostic and jump straight to buying AI tools and licenses, and why that backfires. The three foundational questions every business must answer before adopting AI: data governance, security posture, and leadership alignment. How AI is creating a massive identity crisis inside organizations, and why employee fear and resistance are valid and must be addressed. Why the C-suite is often the most disconnected from how work actually gets done, and the risks that creates during AI rollouts. Real-world examples of AI use cases across three maturity levels: crawling, walking, and running with AI. How a transportation company is using AI to build a dynamic pricing engine with external variables no human team could process at scale. Why celebrating failures and lessons learned matters more than showcasing wins during change initiatives. The single most important piece of advice for operations leaders heading into 2026: talk to your employees, your AI strategy already lives inside their heads. If your organization is feeling the pressure to "do something with AI" but doesn't know where to start, this episode will help you slow down, ask the right questions, and build a foundation that actually leads to sustainable adoption.

In this episode, we perceive the distress of a friend, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 137, penned by Uraiyoor Muthukooththanaar. Set in the ‘Paalai’ or ‘Drylands landscape’, the verse pens a portrait of places ruled by two great kings of ancient Tamil land. It’s a short walk in this trip to the drylands, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the lady, at a time when the lady suspects the man is going to part away from her in search of wealth: “Seeing the many small pits, from which newbie wayfarers had dug up the mud to find some drinking water, and mistaking these for its mate's footprints, with desire, a male elephant touches it and walks on disappointed, in that drylands path, extending like a wild river.  Even though he wants not to go thither, your forehead is greatly ruined, akin to the festival arena, with scattered stoves, having no hint of fire, near the little jungle, filled with trees, densely packed with leaves and flowers, on the day after the ‘pankuni' festival of togetherness, which takes place on the honey-fragrant, cool orchards, atop white sands, on the banks of that great river, brimming with copious water, in the city of Uranthai, known for its sharp and sweet toddy, ruled by the courageous Chozhas, renowned for their roaring, victorious battle drums. Whereas your arms, which were akin to the tall and exquisite bamboos in the mountains, ruled by the lord of the pearl-filled southern seas, Chezhiyan, renowned for his sturdy chariots, have now lost their old beauty! I suffer so!” Time to amble along with some elephants in the drylands! The confidante starts by sketching a scene from this harsh domain, pointing out to small, rounded pits, which she explains are tiny wells, dug by wayfarers, who are new to the game, so as to find some water amidst the mud. Why are these wayfarers said to be newcomers? Possibly because they have come unprepared without a supply of drinking water or the knowledge of more dignified ways of finding the same. As a male elephant walks that way and glimpses at these round pits, for a moment, it takes these to be the footprints of its mate, and it comes near and touches the same over and over again, smelling it and then walking away in dejection. Such is the horrid drylands, a place the man doesn’t even want to leave to, at the moment, the confidante connects.  She then turns to the lady and says, ‘In spite of that, your forehead has become listless, like an abandoned festival arena, with scattered stoves lying about, without any kindling of fire, the day after the event of Pankuni festival, celebrated with gusto, on the sands of the River Kaveri, in the Chozha capital of Uranthai, known for its sweet toddy. From the lady’s ruined forehead, the confidante moves on to the lady’s arms, and compares those to the bamboos in the Pandya King Chezhiyan’s mountains, celebrating the king as the ruler of the southern seas with an unending supply of pearls, and declaring that those arms had lost their beauty too. The confidante concludes by talking about her own suffering on seeing her friend in such a state! The use of place and people similes to underscore the lady’s state informs us about the cultural events of the Chozha country as well as the natural wealth of the Pandya country. Turning to the crux of the issue, we understand that the man hadn’t even left, and here was the lady already wallowing about his possible departure! This state of being highlights the emotion of anxiety that many of us would have felt at the prospect of some event in the future. Hope we can learn to hear the timeless whisper from these pages of the past to overcome that fear of the future by living fully and mindfully in the now!

Minute meetings look great on a spreadsheet. But do they actually help kids? In this episode of Graded, I dig into where this practice really came from, the myths we've built around it, and the risks nobody's talking about, and I'll share what to do instead.Minute meetings have taken on near-folklore status in school counseling. They're all over Pinterest, pushed in Facebook groups, and praised as the “must-do” way to reach every student. But here's the problem: they didn't come from research. They came from a 2011 blog post that went viral because it looked proactive and admin-friendly.I'll unpack why so many counselors have latched onto them, and the real costs hiding under the surface: wasted time, shaky privacy practices, legal risks, and the illusion of equity. Most importantly, you'll leave with stronger, evidence-backed alternatives- systematic data analysis, teacher consultation, and SEL strategies- that replace documentation theater with practices that actually change outcomes. If you've ever wondered whether minute meetings are helping or quietly hurting your program, this episode is for you.References (Annotated)American School Counselor Association. (2005). The ASCA National Model: A framework for school counseling programs (2nd ed.). Alexandria, VA: Author. This framework formalized the profession's shift toward “comprehensive, data-driven” programs. Its expectations created pressure on counselors to prove contact and impact—conditions that made quick-fix strategies like minute meetings appealing.Dahir, C. A., & Stone, C. B. (2006). The transformed school counselor. Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole. Captures the post-ASCA Model climate of accountability and data demands. This context helps explain why counselors gravitated toward visible, trackable practices like minute meetings, even without research support.Kathuria, T., & Pandya, A. (2023). Journal of Psychologists and Counsellors in Schools, 33(2), 1–11. https://doi.org/10.1017/jgc.2023.12 The only peer-reviewed study even remotely related to “minute meetings.” Though conducted in India and using a different model (five minutes, not one), it highlights how little empirical research exists to validate this practice in U.S. schools.Schultz, D. It's a remembrance of ancient wisdom that animals instinctively understand but we've forgotten. True health transformation happens when we maintain an optimal warm, moist internal environment through conscious food choices, seasonal eating, and emotional regulation. Cold protein smoothies in the morning? They're working against your digestive fire when your body needs warming most. In this transformative episode, Ayurvedic physician Dr. Nidhi Bhanshali Pandya reveals how growing up in a 14 person joint family with an Ayurvedic healer grandfather taught her that health principles are universal laws like gravity that remain constant as long as Earth maintains its rotation. These sage scientists accessed nature's intelligence through meditation, discovering truths that apply across all traditional cultures. Dr. Pandya shares practical approaches: pre workout body oiling (ancient wrestler tradition) that transforms exercise recovery, eating your largest meal at lunch when digestive fire peaks, and seasonal eating that aligns with nature's rhythms. Her 21 day transformation framework from "Your Body Already Knows" offers gentle implementation with self-compassion rather than rigid discipline. The path back to health isn't complex protocols.
