We begin and end this conversation with the topic of happiness. In our culture, we're taught that happiness is the pinnacle of life, and when we aren't happy, we have somehow failed. But what if life is meant to provide more than just happiness? What if it's the view of the hills and valleys, the experiences of our journey that make up the rich tapestry of feelings and experiences that constitute a life? We explore how some really deep and brilliant moments are born from intense pain and grief. Experiences like grief can create an opening that connects us to our higher selves and allows us to feel everything, including joy, more richly. Is judging those moments more valuable than fully feeling them? But what do we do when we feel disconnected, lonely, or lost? How do we remind ourselves that we are not alone? The beautiful, and sometimes paradoxical, part of life is that many different elements can coexist at once without negating one another; we can be thriving, and also devastated or heartbroken. Rather than searching for happiness, maybe we can just let ourselves feel our feelings and move towards what we love and what makes us whole. Each of the guests shares their strategies for reconnecting, grounding themselves, and regaining perspective. We hope you enjoy this episode and that you'll join the conversation and share your experiences for the enrichment of all of us!Podcast GuestsSukie BaxterBarbara SchulteChristine DicksonJane PikeCarla BauchmuellerMusic by Mark RashidPhotography by Crissi McDonald
What are the root causes of physical tension and chronic emotional distress? How can we truly heal our bodies and minds? Today's guest points to the nervous system as the node of highest leverage.
This episode I ask that question. Do I have the answer? No I'm not sure and don't have science but I have suggestions to tone the vagus nerve and your nervous system in case they can get in the way of our intuition. Worst case scenario you get some tools to help with stress. Best case scenario you are able to hear and act on your intuition more easily. Understanding the Polyvagal Theory of stress and how stress impacts your biology as an HSP. We'll dig into the concept of nervous system regulation and how HSPs can use it to turn their sensitivity into a superpower. Here are some questions answered in this event: 1. What is Polyvagal Theory and how might it help HSPs to understand it? 2. How might regulating the nervous system lower the challenges of sensitivity? 3. How can HSPs leverage Polyvagal Theory to enable their unique creative genius to thrive? Also we had some discussion on the marginalized experience of the LGBTQ community and the black community and how those communities experience the impact of the lack of safety are also important to understand when we work toward moving humanity forward. Sukie shares..."I would like to help HSPs understand that they are not broken or damaged and empower them with tools they can use to thrive as an HSP in a chaotic world that doesn't always value the inherent skills and abilities that we bring to the table. One of my favorite quotes ever is "It's not a measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society." I firmly believe that it is by empowering each person to live from their own place of truth rather than conform to a contrived cultural norm that we will ultimately heal as a society." Sukie Baxter is the founder of Whole Body Revolution where she helps ambitious high performers and creative geniuses to activate their full human potential and achieve an extraordinary physical and mental edge. Today we dig into the connections between emotions, the psyche, sleep and behavior in babies and toddlers AND adults. Eliza Parker, the woman behind ConsiousBaby.com, shares her expertise on how sleep for little ones is connected to everything else, and how we (as highly sensitive parents) can learn to recognize the innate abilities of babies and toddlers for coping with birth, trauma, experiences, feelings and stimulation. This conversation is not just for parents (but it WILL inform the the highly sensitive parent or the parent of a highly sensitive child). While speaking with Eliza, I noticed so many "ah-ha's" for myself! Sleep, self-regulation and our ability to cope with life experiences are tools that all highly sensitive people need. In many ways, this conversation piggy-back's off the last two episodes with Sukie Baxter and our chats about how the nervous system, emotions and cultural expectations are all related. Posture and movement therapist and friend Sukie Baxter is here with me to have a conversation about positivity - the good, but mostly the bad, ugly and dangerous. Seriously, people - this movement is an epidemic and works against our actual biology. Here's what we cover in Part 1: - What is the positivity movement and positivity washing? - Where the movements show up - in the wellness, fitness, spirituality and coaching communities - How we miss out on connection if we only allow "good emotions," since connection is built on "going through" something - Using biology to explain the ridiculousness of "good" vs "bad" processes or emotions - The danger of intellectualizing wisdom traditions - Using horse training and parenting as examples of how nervous systems get shut down, and how we can build resiliency instead - Our emotion phobic culture - Repressed emotional trauma - Identified patient and highly sensitive people - The relationship behind the positivity movement to colonialism - Colonialism and how we think we're right about everything, including nature Resources from this episode: - Kelly Diels, http://www.kellydiels.com/ - Horse trainer Warwick Schiller - https://www.warwickschiller.com/ - Christine Kent and her book, "Saving the Whole Woman" - http://www.savingthewholewoman.com/ - Brene Brown, https://brenebrown.com/ Learn more about Sukie Baxter at www.wholebodyrevolution.com Support this podcast at www.patreon.com/sensitivityuncensored Book a session with me or learn more at www.sensitivityuncensored.com
In Part 2, we jump back in exactly where we left off and lead with the positivity movement being akin to trying to manage the ecology of our emotions. But our body is a wild thing, so who does this serve? We also discuss: - How the positivity movement serves a post industrial culture, capitalism and external validation - Learning to be present and internally validated is an act of rebellion against oppressive systems - Spiritual bypassing: what it is, why it's dangerous, and why it's counterproductive to the spiritual movement - The idea of the positivity movement that all your problems are 100% your responsibility and how that leaves out our circumstances, which are real - Gratitude journalling and how it's become bastardized - What we can do to heal and move forward out of the dangerous positivity movement - Get present - Find sensation - Intuition is in the body, not outside of it - Emotional triggers and how biology doesn't understand time - Using Time-In Corners with kids and adults - Somatic experiencing and why it's helpful with emotional trauma - Your body is a wild animal - This is a process, not an event Resources from this episode: - Antonio Damasio -- The Strange Order of Things: https://www.amazon.com/Strange-Order-Things-Feeling-Cultures/dp/0307908755/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+strange+order+of+things&qid=1562344352&s=gateway&sr=8-1 - Guy Claxtion -- Intelligence in the Flesh: https://www.amazon.com/Intelligence-Flesh-Your-Needs-Thinks/dp/0300223471/ref=sr_1_1?crid=J4ZS3R3Y9F7A&keywords=intelligence+in+the+flesh&qid=1562344399&s=gateway&sprefix=intelligencein+%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-1 - Somatic Experiencing, http://somaticexperiencing.com/ - "Healing Through the Dark Emotions" by Miriam Greenspan, https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Through-Dark-Emotions-Despair/dp/1590301013 - Heather Plett and Holding Space, https://heatherplett.com/ - Time-In Corner, https://genmindful.com/products/time-in-toolkit Learn more about Sukie Baxter at www.wholebodyrevolution.com Work with me or learn more at www.sensitivityuncensored.com Support this podcast at patreon.com/sensitivityuncensored
When I say the word “posture,” do you immediately feel your body tense and gravitate to an unnatural, uncomfortable position? We often hear this advice about maintaining a rigid posture with certain key elements, but Sukie Baxter joins us to discuss why those misconceptions of posture are harmful and how she defines it instead. Sukie tells us that the way we move our bodies is the way we move through life and that finding a healthy posture is often the key to pain relief and healthy aging. Sukie Baxter invites highly sensitive people to take up space - in our bodies and in our lives. In this episode, we explore what exactly this means, plus cover how the body is the key to creating more space within our whole lives. At the end of the episode, Sukie takes us through a practice to help us understand how we're currently taking up space in our body and how we can begin to make changes.
When you're creating your own path or starting your own business, it's hard to remember to take care of your body. That's when you burn out (and your business can't afford that). Radical body mover and therapist Sukie Baxter joins Morra to explain how we can change the way we move, avoid burnout, and take up the space we deserve.
