It's been a decade since Thom Filicia, acclaimed interior designer and former co-star of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” served as a bone marrow donor for his brother, Jules, who had received a diagnosis of myelofibrosis. “It was a disease I knew nothing about, I'd never even heard of it before,” Filicia told CURE®. “So that, in and of itself, was a very unusual situation, to have to navigate that. … In (Jules') situation, we needed to move very quickly. And, in his case, the most appropriate (treatment) at that time, was a bone marrow transplant, so that's what we needed to do.” Myelofibrosis, as explained by the MPN Research Foundation, is a type of chronic blood cancer that involves the formation of excessive scar tissue in the bone marrow, impairing the patient's ability to produce normal blood cells. It is part of a category of blood cancers known as myeloproliferative neoplasms, or MPNs. “Myelofibrosis is a challenge, because first of all, it's (a) very rare disease, we're talking about 25,000 people in the United States have this, maybe one in 500,000 people worldwide have this disease, so it's a very rare disease,” explained Dr. Andrew Kuykendall of the department of malignant hematology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.  The presentation of myelofibrosis can also vary from patient to patient, as Kuykendall explained. “People can either present with just abnormal blood counts, they can present with painful abdominal pain or splenomegaly, where their spleen is enlarged or other organs can be enlarged, (or) it could be from having fevers, chills, night sweats, bone pain, a lot of symptoms that bring them to that healthcare,” Kuykendall said. “And so, it's one of those things where all those people could come with a variety of symptoms yet receive the same diagnosis. And I think that that's challenging because it doesn't necessarily present in one way. There's no kind of map. We often say, ‘The disease doesn't read the textbook,' and that's very true when it comes to myelofibrosis.” A decade after the bone marrow transplant, Filicia says his brother is in great health, and he looked back on the transplant process as a “pretty seamless” experience. “It was a good experience for both of us and a positive outcome, which is really great,” Filicia said. “I would say what it does in terms of (our relationship), we're blood brothers at a level that is very different than just being brothers because we now share the same DNA. And we've gone through this experience together, and it was a pretty impactful experience.” Filicia has now partnered with biopharma company GSK to launch the online initiative Mapping Myelofibrosis, dedicated to raising awareness about the disease with input from organizations including the MPN Research Foundation and MPN Advocacy and Education International.  The initiative's website, mappingmf.com, includes educational and informational materials as well as podcast episodes and stories from members of the myelofibrosis community of patients and loved ones, Filicia among them. “To be a resource or to be impactful in that situation, you really need information, and you need to know that you're not the only person going through it, you need to understand what other people are going through, you need to be able to connect with a doctor like Dr. Kuykendall where they can explain things to you in a way that you understand it,” Filicia said.  “And that gives you hope, and that gives you the ability to, I would imagine, move forward in a positive, thoughtful, empowered way where you feel like you're making the best decisions that you can make, for your situation, with the best guidance that you feel comfortable with.” Filicia and Kuykendall spoke with CURE®'s “Cancer Horizons” podcast about myelofibrosis, persistent misconceptions regarding bone marrow donation and the motivation behind the Mapping Myelofibrosis. For more news on cancer updates, research and education, don't forget to subscribe to CURE®'s newsletters here.

These hilarious gentlemen talk to us about how they met at the gym and eventually became members of the smash show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and a sneak peek into their new show Get a Room on Bravo. Then join Nick and designer/TV personality Thom Filicia of Thom Filicia Inc live from the showroom floor at Listen to Thom answer fan questions while discussing his early days as a designer, his experience on Queer Eye, and his upcoming new projects. Early Beginnings Thom Filicia grew up in Syracuse, NY, and realized that he wanted to be a designer in the 5th grade when he drew an elaborate McMansion on his elementary school desk -- even though he got in trouble. Later, Thom entered into an advanced art program at school and went on to study art and design, ultimately earning a degree in Interior Design. In 1998 he opened his own business. The Business Now, Thom Filicia manages three different business empires: Thom Filicia Inc, a traditional brick and mortar interior design firm focusing on commercial projects, hotels and restaurants; Sedgwick and Brattle, a showroom and experience center in NYC; and Tom Filicia Entertainment, which focuses on books and television. Originally Thom thought he opened his own business before he was really ready. In retrospect, he realizes that you are never really ready for anything that is monumental in your life, and becoming a business owner taught him how to acclimate to things intuitively. Sometimes, he says, you have to take on more than you are capable of to go to the next level, and he credits his internship experience as the springboard for his career. The Show Of course, Thom is best known for his appearances on the show Queer Eye -- and the backstory is incredible. Believe it or not, Thom was actually discovered by a talent scout while they were both stuck in a broken elevator. Thom says he was able to bring a lighthearted humor during a difficult situation which helps to alleviate the hysterics of other passengers, and after they were rescued from the elevator, the two exchanged cards. A few months later, Thom was contacted by the scout for an upcoming project, and although Thom didn't have television experience, the agent submitted his name anyway. The rest is history. Thom is excited that the show is back on the air and that the brand is still relevant to viewers today. Beyond the commercial appeal, he says that the Fab Five are like brothers to him. Today Thom is currently filming his new Bravo show, the Thom and Carson Project. The show will focus on the pair helping people who have some issue with the design on their home and is scheduled to air in mid-October. Our guest today is Betsy Helmuth, owner and operator of Affordable Interior Design. She has designed over 1500 spaces including apartments in Argentina, a McDonalds in Brooklyn, and a mansion in India. Betsy started out by working for free for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Thom Filicia, while making a living as a bartender. This led to her becoming interested in having her own firm. She reached out to Thom because it was something she wanted to do, but he came back to her and said he needed her help. Sometimes when you see people on big platforms you think they’ve made it in different ways.  If anything, they are probably looking to grow and it’s a really good time to reach out.   Once she got clarity, Betsy’s business grew from an idea to the six-figure mark in a couple of years. Betsy didn’t know anything about SEO when she started blogging but she just kept writing all the time. She would sit down at the beginning of the month and line them all up. She would come up with ideas for different days of the week. She would put a picture up and a couple sentences of what she thought about it. If you’re going to do something, if you are going to maintain that consistency, then you have to get really passionate about it.   Nurture your tribe. Put a lot of information out there but when you nurture your prospects and the people they become your tribe. When you hire someone they are living your brand and you have such a specific trade, how did you manage the process? I evaluated the way I work.  I have a very specific method for how I work.  It’s the same for every client that I have ever seen.  I do and say the same thing to each client.  So, I teach that to my designers.  Even though all my interior designers have all been to interior design school, unlike me.  Even though they have all worked as paid designers in the field, unlike me.  I also make them train for a month in my method.  So when you get an Affordable Interior Design designer, they are going to do all the steps that I do so that I know that every client is getting the exact same experience.  So, I had to distill this unpredictable design method into a very formulaic.  Which is how I like to work.  Freedom with in a form.  So I have a formula that I do every time and it works every time. Thom is perhaps best known for his roles in hit television programs like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Tacky House, but more recently, he authored the book American Beauty published by Clarkson Potter. Tune into this episode to hear why Thom decided to restore and fix up a home from the early 1900s in the Finger Lakes, and why he fell in love with the structure. Listen in to learn about Thom’s original interest in design as a child, and why he almost decided to design automobiles. Want to know more about Thom’s favorite interiors in New York City? Then listen to this episode of After the Jump! This program has been brought to you by Clarkson Potter Publishers.   “One of the things we talk about a lot is the ‘democracy of design.’ I love the fact that design is becoming universal at a certain level, from the Targets to the world to the high end.. There’s this mix of high and low that I think is very appealing to the next buying power. That generation is all about mixing old and new, and high and low.” [6:35] — Thom Filicia on After the Jump
