In a culture that is obsessed with perfection, it's easy to believe that hospitality requires a spotless home, a carefully planned menu, and a seamless itinerary. But the truth is, connection has never required perfection.Sometimes, the most meaningful moments in life happen with dishes in the sink and pillows on the floor. Deep down, most of us already know this to be true. And yet, inviting people into our space can still feel overwhelming. That's why, today, we're asking the question:What if hospitality isn't about impressing others, but about making space for them to feel seen and loved? My guest today is Abby Kuykendall, author of Let the Biscuits Burn. Abby has spent years exploring what it means to build God-centered community around the table. Through her own journey of singleness, growth, and opening her home in different seasons, she has discovered that hospitality is less about performance and more about presence. In this episode, you'll hear:The difference between entertaining and true hospitalityWhy it's important to gather with people who are different from usThree simple qualities that can help you practice hospitality right where you areAnd more!I loved this conversation with Abby! It was such a freeing reminder that we don't have to do hospitality perfectly to do it faithfully.Find resources mentioned and more in the show notes: jillsavage.org/abby-kuykendall-286Join us for 6 weeks of our Great Sexpectations focus in our Date Night membership where we dive deep into intimacy. Hospitality isn't a styled table—it's how people feel in your presence. In this heart-tugging conversation, Abby Kuykendall reframes hospitality as the art of helping others feel known, loved, and seen—whether you meet in a tiny apartment, a messy kitchen, or a neighborhood park. She draws a bright line between entertaining (me-focused aesthetics) and hospitality (others-focused welcome), shares the spiritual roots behind “practice hospitality,” and gets real about rejection—why a few no's shouldn't stop you from inviting again. With stories from her own seasons of life, Abby shows how rhythms change (hello, nap schedules) but the mission doesn't, and why outdoor gatherings often make connection simpler, cheaper, and more relaxed. You'll leave with practical moves you can try tonight: start with an invitation, set two or three “non-negotiables” (clean-ish bathroom, empty sink, drinks ready), and keep food simple—potlucks with specific asks, air-fried crowd-pleasers, or even “waffles at 10” after a game. Abby also spotlights her cookbook The Living Table and the snack-drawer mindset that tells guests, “Make yourself at home.” If you've ever delayed community until your house, budget, or schedule looked “perfect,” this episode is your permission slip to begin—outside if you can, imperfectly on purpose, with an invitation that opens the door to real connection. It was a rare start to fall camp, in fact it's something we really haven't seen before. There was literally no 11-11 competition at all during day one of Washington's fall camp, held Wednesday morning inside Husky Stadium. What took place was mostly individual drills for each position group, as well as plenty of special teams work as the Huskies won't get into full pads for a few more workouts. It did allow the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - time to really watch the team run and jump around, as well as get their first opportunity at seeing the players that enrolled in June. To start the post-practice podcast, the guys talk about the news that Ryan Otton is medically redshirting. This shouldn't come as big news to hardcore UW fans, as the former Tumwater star and younger brother of Cade Otton played in just two games in three seasons. He simply couldn't get healthy and/or stay healthy, and so a medical retirement definitely felt like it was on the cards. UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch also announced that quarterback Shea Kuykendall is redshirting the 2025 season and will stay on as a student assistant. How does that change the makeup of the QB room? Does it mean the freshmen quarterbacks move up, or had they already passed Kuykendall the depth chart by the end of spring? After some talk about the offensive players that stood out, the guys then turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball, including talk on a couple players that were talked about a lot during Tuesday's media day - defensive back Rahshawn Clark and defensive lineman Anterio Thompson. The guys also talked about the move of true frosh Donovan Robinson to linebacker. Scott provided a quick recruiting update and Kim previewed Thursday's UW Men's Basketball Media Day, as the Dawgman guys will be pulling double duty tomorrow. During those three days, Bella went from a happy, bubbly baby to alternately crying hysterically and becoming quiet and withdrawn. Then her parents noticed a distinctive pinching bruise on Bella's thigh. An investigation turned up hours of CCTV footage from inside the daycare, showing three workers abusing the baby, including pinching, shoving, crushing, slapping, shaking, and smothering her.Bella's parents, JD and Kaitlin Kuykendall, assumed their baby's abusers would immediately face consequences, but instead, officials seemed hell-bent on sweeping the incident under the rug. The daycare workers responsible remained working at the CDC for months. Only when Bella's parents went public with her story were any charges pressed, and those were woefully inadequate. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Kaitlin Kuykendall about what Bella endured, how it continues to affect her to this day, and why Kaitlin and her husband went public with her story. This is the inspiring story of Operation Mei Mei.Operation Mei Mei on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573058332219Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards.
