This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library. Other works discussed in this episode include the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, Who Invited Them?, Late Night With The Devil, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, [·REC], Quarantine, Searching, Paranormal Activity, The Mist, Scream, Talk To Me, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Babadook, Malignant, Barbarian, Terrifier, Star Trek (2009), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Mr. McMahon, Morbius, Poltergeist, The Shining, Room 104, Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween (2007), The Devil's Rejects, and Black Sheep. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a well-regarded horror classic from one of the original masters of the genre, as we finally catch up with Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore Although the ALIEN: ROMULUS postproduction team of Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore came into this project with a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst them, they still learned a thing or two from director Fede Álvarez, including Fede's not-so-secret formula for jump scares, as well as the notion that clear dialogue isn't always as important as gripping action.  Plus, they reveal the hidden intent of Álvarez to split ALIEN and ALIENS into the two sides of the REMUS/ROMULUS space station. ALIEN: ROMULUS is the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, set between the events of ALIEN (1979) and ALIENS (1986). The film follows a group of downtrodden young space colonists in pursuit of better life conditions.  During the course of their escape from endless servitude on a mining colony, they encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. JAKE ROBERTS, ACE After his work on CITADEL (2012), STARRED UP (2013), THE RIOT CLUB (2014) and BROOKLYN (2015), Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing for his work on HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016) starring Chris Pine. The movie also garnered him a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award.  Roberts then cut OUTLAW KING (2018) for Netflix directed by David Mackenzie.  He then began collaborating with director Alex Garland, editing his 2020 miniseries DEVS as well as his film, MEN (2022).  Prior to ALIEN: ROMULUS, Jake cut Garland's CIVIL WAR (2024). WILL FILES Will Files is known for his work on THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020), VENOM (2018), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017), STAR WARS:  EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS (2017) and CLOVERFIELD (2008). POLLY McKINNON Polly McKinnon is known for DISTRICT 9 (2009), FORD V FERRARI (2019) and DUNE: PART TWO (2024).  In 2019 she won a Golden Reel Award for her sound editing on EXTINCTION (2018). LEE GILMORE Lee Gilmore is known for BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017), DUNE (2021) and THE BATMAN (2022).  Gilmore also won an Emmy for his work on the feature film, PREY (2022). Movie Synopsis: When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death. __________________________________________________ Felix is such a badass and cool individual! This guy played the two creepiest Tarot characters in the movie. It's no wonder why this talented stuntman was chosen; performing stunts in notable movies such as: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), The Batman (2022), Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) – just to name a few. We discussed how he was chosen for these particular roles, and it seems that the casting director has chosen the right person for the jobs. I cannot imagine what rehearsing on set must have been like, pretty tough, I imagine. However, I am thoroughly impressed with his story about that Jackie Chan plays an integral part of if his career, and no one on this planet can argue that Jackie Chan is awesome. Role models should always be mentioned in someone's stories! Hands down, I loved the movie! Stunt performers are under-appreciated, and they definitely deserve more respect than the world gives them. In my opinion, stunt performers are the backbone of the movie. So I am hoping that Felix wins an award for this role, he most definitely deserves one!

We don't like to brag or anything, but the people behind Madness Madness have accomplished some pretty incredible feats of combat prowess, to the point where several hit movies have been based on our exploits: Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Jurassic World, The Lion King, The Avengers, Furious 7, Top Gun: Maverick, Frozen II, and of course Barbie. That's more than $27 billion at the box office just from the ones we can name off the tops of our heads, so honestly we've got nothing to learn from Frank Dux, a fight choreographer and semi-professional liar whose “life story,” the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme breakout “Bloodsport,” pulled in a mere puff of dust to the tune of $11.8 million worldwide, which I don't even think is enough money to wipe your ass with these days.Nonetheless we'll hear about this valor-stealing boomer schmuck, then imagine him dropped into Cassadaga, Florida (formerly New York), the fortune-telling capital of the world, mouthing off to a series of increasingly irritable palm readers until the ghost of Patrick Swayze manifests and Road House roundhouses him so hard he lands in a different ZIP code from his medals of honor, which turn out to be made of cardboard and cellophane anyway.
