Are you intrigued by the complexities of underwater photography? Nicolas Remy (multi award-winning underwater photographer and founder of The Underwater Club) joins me in the studio to shed some light on this intricate art.Nicolas and his wife Lena caught my attention initially with their stunning photos and furthermore because they dived on rebreathers. To me, rebreather diving to photograph marine life makes inherent sense, and I wanted to explore this fascinating topic with Nicolas in this episode. The extended dive times, the silence, and the opportunity to get much closer to your subject without disturbance are some of the benefits Nicolas highlights, while also discussing the two rebreathers they use, the Revo and Horizon. Not only does Nicolas take a superb shot; he enjoys sharing his skills with others. Teaching people and breaking subjects down into a more understandable format is truly a passion of his. So, Nicolas has quit the corporate world and devoted the last 18 months to fine-tuning The Underwater Club and its contents. It is an exceptional forum for two-way communications and jam-packed with Nicolas' knowledge to be shared with all club members through various means, expanding on his availability as a one-on-one coach.A keen writer, he has also penned content for Scuba Diver magazine and Narked at 90, with additional content in WETPIXEL and OZ Diver. We anticipate the launch of the Underwater Club's website very soon; to stay in the loop you can sign up for the newsletter (and have an added chance to win a prize).  Join me in the studio as Nicolas takes us from his first discover scuba dive on Kangaroo Island, to global recognition for his underwater photography and the formation of The Underwater Club. DON'T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A PRIZE! Nicolas Remy (Multi award-winning underwater photographer and founder of The Underwater Club) joins me in the studio to shed some light on this intricate art. Who Will Rule the Sky? The Coming Drone Policy Wars Matt Cagle Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Attorney, ACLU of Northern California Eric Cheng General Manager, DJI SF and Director of Aerial Imaging, DJI Your private drone opens up limitless possibilities – how can manufacturers and policymakers ensure you are able to realize them? As private drone ownership becomes the norm, drone makers and lawmakers will need to make important policy decisions that account for the privacy and free speech issues raised by this new technology. What legal and technical rules are being considered right now, and how might they affect your ability to do things like record footage at a city park, monitor police at a protest, or fly near a government building? These decisions will dictate the technical limitations (or lack thereof) placed on drones, and the legal consequences of operating them. Join Eric Cheng, General Manager of DJI SF and DJI's Director of Aerial Imaging, and Matt Cagle, a Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Attorney with the ACLU of Northern California, to discuss the policy issues at this leading edge of law and consumer technologies. Matt Cagle is a Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Attorney at the ACLU of Northern California. At the ACLU-NC, Matt's work focuses on the privacy and free speech issues raised by new services and technologies, including surveillance equipment, social media services, and connected devices. Last fall, Matt co-authored Making Smart Decisions About Surveillance: A Guide for Communities, a paper that provides a framework for communities considering surveillance technology proposals. Matt has worked in private practice advising technology companies on the privacy issues related to new products and services. Matt has substantial experience responding to state and federal law enforcement requests for online user information, and he co-authored reddit's first ever transparency report. Matt regularly speaks at conferences ranging from SXSW to RightsCon, and he served on the privacy committee for Oakland's controversial surveillance complex, the Domain Awareness Center. Creative underwater filmmaker, Gyula (Jules) Somogyi garnered the Silver Medal at the Our World Underwater/DivePhotoGuide/Wetpixel competition this year with this stunning short film. Gyula says of the genesis of this film: "The original version of "The Vision of the Oraculum" was shot and edited during the 2007 SanDisk RedSea shoot-out in Eilat. The idea of making a short film with a complex story had two origins: I had already dived in Eilat in 2006 and was impressed by the beauty of the famous Moses-rock. I started looking into how this reef got its name. The very unique shape of the reef was the answer, because when Moses struck the rock with his rod, the rock divided into ttwo parts. So now I had an explanation, only the story was missing. Then into the picture came a very well know commercial, the 1984 ad directed by Ridley Scott. The amazingly complex story in 56 seconds served as my indirect assistant, its structure and storyboard helped me to design and sketch my storyboard. What is the common ground? The biblical Moses story is very well known--as well as the novel of George Orwell, 1984. Both stories became part of our common cultural knowledge. "I arrived at Eilat with a shot-list, and asked underwater photographer Sharon Rainis to be my Oraculum and underwater photographer Amir Stern to be Moses in my film. Their patience and readiness to help gave me the chance to make this film. The first cut was finished within 8 hours in my hotel room in Eilat. After the competition I got some very valuable advice from Christian Petron, who was the head of the jury at the SanDisk RedSea shoot-out. The first cut was also extensively discussed in the Hungarian on-line diving community at the forums of the Divecenter.hu. Then I let the film rest for a couple of weeks. "Around Christmas I asked my friend, Arthur Grosz, a young Hungarian composer, to create a new soundtrack for this story. Based on the old film's sequences but utilizing the re-defined structure and storyboard, Arthur composed the new soundtrack and I finished the new edit just before the deadline of the Our World Underwater 2008 Competition. In conclusion, after spending about two months to create this little film, I am very pleased that it was awarded the Silver medal at his competition and has reached you, dear viewer, via the DiveFilm HD Video podcast. Enjoy!" This video earned 1st Place, underwater video category in the 3rd Annual International Underwater Photography & Video Competition, organized by DivePhotoGuide.com and Wetpixel.com in association with Our World Underwater. Mike Boom says of "Komodo Beneath the Waves": In the summer of 2007, my wife and I went to Indonesia for a couple of weeks of diving from the Seven Seas live-aboard dive boat in Komodo National Park. We were very lucky to be there with Howard and Michele Hall, who were scouting locations with Peter Kragh for the Halls' upcoming 3D IMAX movie, a sequel to their very successful Deep Sea 3D. It's always a thorough education to watch Howard shoot, and the Halls are a lot of fun to hang out with. Komodo surprised us completely: it wasn't the dripping green rain-forested islands crawling with Komodo dragons that I had in my mind's eye, but dry islands that remind me a lot of the Channel Islands off southern California. (Although there were Komodo dragons crawling around.) The sea life was amazing: Lynn and I were completely overwhelmed with the sheer number and variety of fish, the rich invertebrate life, and the overwhelming beauty of the coral. This video is an attempt to shoehorn at least some of that into a three-minute video. This powerful film portrays the tragic decimation of sharks and shark populations by humans and the shark fin industry. Underwater filmmaker and conservationist Shawn Heinrichs juxtaposes beautiful images of lush tropical marine settings with the all-too-common scene below the surface of dead sharks littering the bottom, their fins cut off to feed an insatiable market for shark fin. Shark populations have dropped 90 percent in areas due to this unsustainable practice, threatening the very survival of numerous species of sharks, and disrupting fragile ecosystems worldwide. Paul Wags is a scuba instructor, videographer and filmmaker. (He's also a video forum moderator at Wetpixel.com!) Kelly is a divemaster, videographer, and our host for this wonderful visual introduction to their "Video Lives," both underwater and above. Wags and Kelly are based in Exmouth and the Ningaloo region of Western Australia. The Ningaloo region is a remote and varied wilderness, where the rugged West Australian desert meets a pristine tropical reef. The region is evolving as an ecotourism mecca. However, it also faces increasing pressure from opposing uses of resources including mining and commercial fishing industries. The town attracts a varied population, from those dedicated to conservation to those whose sole motivation is economic development. This divides the community to a degree. However, as is often the case in small towns, neccessity overcomes emotion and in the times when mother nature throws Exmouth a curve ball, such as category 5 cyclone Vance in 1999, the differences are put aside and the town rises to the challenge.
