Rayna O'Nan is a world-renown shark diving guide, scuba instructor and Marine Biologist.  She explains why she loves taking people diving with some of her favorite sharks. In fact, Rayna was instrumental in creating one of the first “celebrity sharks” that divers can see up close in the wild: “Snooty” the Lemon Shark! We also dive right into the hotly-debated topic of using bait to attract sharks, the effects it may have on behavior modification, and why this is actually saving sharks.  We cover it all: How to do the dive, what conditions are required, why she loves it, and of course… is it safe for divers? This is one of the most content-packed interviews ever done in one spot. We had just got off the boat and spent the day on two distinct shark dives led by Rayna: Lemon sharks AND full-grown BULL sharks! We loved every minute of it, and all of these videos were taken directly from that trip (minus the Publix footage, of course!) NOTE: Our second dive (shown in much of this video) was STRICTLY BULL SHARKS, for a total of 6 full-grown females. After being given proper instruction and precautions, they were absolutely fantastic to dive with! Ann-Christin Villegas is this week's guest on Two Kids and A Career. Her pregnancy journey led her to writing about it. From Ann-Christin:"Becoming a mother and all the struggles that come with it literally opened a new chapter of my life. I am passionate about empowering other parents to pursue the vision they have for their family without giving into the easy way out and the peer pressure around them. I hope my book is the no-nonsense go-to book when dealing with topics most people shy away from.Originally from Friedberg, Germany, I reside in Northern Virginia with my husband Luis, two (for now) daughters Mila and Livia and two cats, Pubi and Panta. I am a PMP certified Biotech Engineer and work as a consultant in the pharmaceutical industry. I love to travel, especially to Germany, where I was born and raised. I enjoy cooking and baking, followed closely by eating. I am always up for an adventure and like scuba diving, just not with unexpected Bull Sharks encircling…but that is another story for another time."She describes her book, “Becoming A Parent” as:"Parenthood: The only place you can experience heaven and hell at the same time. The unsugarcoated guide to help you prepare before birth to your baby's first birthday. When you find out you will be a parent, you realize you have no idea what you have gotten yourself into. As one of the ocean's top predators, Bull Sharks are demonized and characterized as man-killing machines. What gives this myth even more teeth is the fact that Bull Sharks can be found in many major river systems and even some freshwater lakes around the world. We fear Bull Sharks, when the statistics show Bull Sharks hardly ever attack and even kill humans. We are now harvesting nearly 100 million sharks a year from our oceans at an unsustainable rate. Thus, Bull Sharks and many of its close relatives are heading straight towards extinction. This is a fascinating species that deserves your time and understanding. There are so many astounding facts about Bull Sharks we have no doubt you will fall in love with them as we did. Thank you to all our Patreon supporters. A re-examination of the way we approach the shark attacks through the arming of surfers with essential shark knowledge. This podcast is a reading of the surfing guide to sharks written by myself with the help of oceanographers, scientists, surfers, and paramedics. This podcast will give you some information about sharks that may influence when, where, and how you enter the water to surf. The information in this podcast is essential for every ocean goer to know, yet our government and even surf life-saving groups fail to teach it. The fact that we share the ocean with dangerous apex predators on daily basis will finally be addressed in a way aimed to help you make informed decisions. This is a must-listen for surfers and shark enthusiasts. How do the sky, the rain, and the time of day affect the hunting habits of sharks? Why is a Great White colored the way it is and how does making their bodies warm makes them smarter? Where in a surf break do most attacks happen and how? The guide is here to not only address important questions but also to address the reality of sharks and the danger that sharing the water with them brings with it. Alternative Baseball founder Taylor Duncan interviews Cody Cargle; a personal friend and now an Alternative Baseball player for the Panama City Bullsharks in Panama City, Florida! In this episode, ABO Nation learns all about Cody and the new team soon to begin practice; discussing personal perspectives on life, Alternative Baseball, the new Bullsharks squad, the team's needs, the 1996 Olympics, and of course: COVID-19 guidelines! --- Founded by Taylor Duncan (a person on the autism spectrum), Alternative Baseball provides the authentic baseball experience for teens and adults (ages 15+) with autism and other disabilities for physical and social skills enrichment in life on and off the baseball diamond. With teams starting back from COVID-19 across the United States of America, the organization aims to destroy the negative limitation perception of what one with a disability can and cannot accomplish. Alternative Baseball plays by the traditional baseball rule-set; different from other disability baseball programs in which there are no "buddies." Everyone plays the field independently and with wood bats resembling those seen on television. This is a truly fascinating discussion. My Guest today is Nathan Mejia, who resides in Florida, USA. He is 27, and works in the computing industry after graduating with a degree in Computer Systems. Do you know anyone who has gone shark diving in a cage? Would you ever do it yourself? What if I told you that my guest today not only went shark diving, but did it without oxygen, and without a cage. Yes, you read that right.Episode highlights:[02:14] - Nathan introduces himself[04:36] - Briefly compares colombian and dominican cultures, since he is 1/2 1/2.[06:44] - Deep dive on fascinating topic of shark diving experience, where and when? Jupiter, Florida, U.S.A[08:18] - Idea of diving with sharks, with no cage, normal amongst population or just you and your friends?[10:20] - Reviews online, or just word of mouth?[12:06] - No intellectual bias, reviews gave him confidence, despite mathematical probability that he could be eaten alive or injured. Bigger chance of death by vending machine.[13:06] - Description of show notes will show website of company he used (see below)[13:23] - What preparations be it mentally, physically?[15:05] - 1.5 miles out from coast of Jupiter, chum the water, establish controlled environment.[15:44] - Are sharks encountered on every outing?[18:06] - What previous diving experience have you had? Not certified Scuba, no need. Free Diving, build resistance in own lungs, less gear needed.[20:06] - The moment you break 6 feet, the sharks will come up to you.[21:19] - Sounds absurd, just need to swim, and you can be with these dangerous animals. No reviews seen of people losing limbs.[23:38] - If you dive nude, higher chance of being attacked?[25:56] - Each species of shark behaves and reacts differently to humans.[26:54] - If you dive when sharks are hungry, is there a bigger chance of being attacked?[28:22] - How much was the experience per person? Grand total $350.00 U.S. Includes professional photographs, videos.[31:04] - If shark decides he wants you for dinner, what can an instructor do?[32:25] - Bullsharks, Sandbar shark, Reef sharks.[35:00] - Eyeballing you, 8.5 ft shark, male vs female. Females larger, 400lbs plus.[37:20] - Do these sharks turn on each other in a predatory way? Bullsharks run the show.[38:01] - They even eat car tyres, Continental vs Michelin. Apex predators in their ecosystem.[40:20] - No cage. Movies with cage scenario vs excursion without a cage. Do some sharks necessitate a cage in all circumstances? A great white would probably require cage in most circumstances.[42:50] - How scared were you on a scale of zero to ten compared to any other life experiences? 7/10 rising to an 11/10.[44:39] - Always maintain eye contact, and don't turn your back. Don't show fear or panic even if you're terrified. Remain calm.[45:08] - 8 inches from my face!!! WHAT?![47:03] - "I'm not food!". In this episode, we visit the ocean waters off the island of Beqa, Fiji. Fijian songs and meke (traditional dance) are interwoven with footage of some of Fiji's diverse marine life, where coral reefs, a variety of reef fish, and Bull Sharks make for great diving. In late 2005, the first of Fiji's planned Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were established by local villages. Director of Dive Operations for Aqua-Tek, Brandon Paige, discusses the importance of this conservation effort, and how it benefits both visiting divers and local villagers. Fiji’s Great Sea Reef is the third longest barrier reef in the world. It is hoped that by 2020, an MPA Network covering 30% of the country's waters will have been established.
