Jodi Cobb is a pioneering photojournalist based in Washington, D.C. As a staff and freelance photographer with National Geographic for more than three decades, Jodi photographed over thirty stories and developed an international following for her visually powerful work. Jodi was the first woman named White House Photographer of the Year and one of her photographs is on the Voyager Spacecraft, out in the universe forever.Jodi learned to communicate through cultural and language barriers as a child and these skills have served her well in her career as she has penetrated an array of closed worlds. Jodi was one of the first western photographers allowed to enter China in the late 1970s, she explored the hidden world of the women of Saudi Arabia in the late 1980s and her powerful piece on modern slavery exposed the brutal world of human trafficking in 2003.This is an insightful and moving conversation with one of the pioneering women of photography who brings a rare blend experience, wisdom, compassion and expertise to the table. Sophie Kietzmann is a Fashion and Beauty Photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Through her work, Sophie fills the gaps of visual representation of the diversity within our society, giving individuals and marginalized social groups non-tokenistic and ethical material for self-recognition and true equality. Sophie is truly a barrier-breaking photographer who is doing important and visually striking work. Adam Lawrence is a fantastic portrait photographer based In London who made his name in the britpop / cool Britannia era of 1990's Britain. More recently, he's become a specialist in composite group photographs. These are the kind of images that promote a new tv show where each cast member is photographed individually and put together into one seamless group shot and placed in an environment they may never have stood in in real life. Adam has worked with show including Geordie Shore, The Inbetweenres, Coastguard, The Fast Show, The Windsors, Derry Girls, Inside the Ambulance and many more for clients like BBC, Chanel 4, Endemol and The Radio Times.This is highly skilled, technical work for big clients but Adam is able to install the images with such life and personality which is a testament to his experience as a 1-to-1 portrait photographer. Jaison Sterling is a professional photographer from Little Rock, Arkansas. Jaison is best known for his dynamic, off-camera-flash portraits of high school sports teams - if you're on Instagram or Tik Tok there's a pretty good chance you've seen some of Jason's viral, behind the scenes videos which have gained millions views. Jason also shoots weddings and portraits with his wife, Callie and teaches workshops around the United States. There's nobody else in the world of photography quite like Joe McNally. A self confessed generalist, long-time documentary photographer, teacher to millions of photographers worldwide and bang-up nice bloke. Joe has shot 15 stories for National Geographic (including 5 cover stories), 7 covers for Life Magazine, 4 Olympic Games, with other clients including ABC television, Sports Illustrated, and Time Magazine. Gregory Heisler is a portrait photographer based in Syracuse, New York who has photographed Bill Clinton, George H Bush, George W Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, Yasser Arafat, Benjamin Netanyahu, Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani, Bruce Springsteen, Chinua Achebe, Denzel Washington, Mick Jagger, Partick Stewart, Al Paccino, Hugh Grant, Tim Burton, Joni Mitchell, Liam Neeson, Muhammad Ali, Carl Lewis, Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Gates, Bono and countless more household names for publications like Life Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, ESPN, New York Times Magazine. Greg has shot over 70 covers for Time Magazine and he has also photographed major advertising campaigns for clients including American Express, Ford, Guinness, Merrill Lynch, Nike, Pfizer and Reebok. Gregory is the recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award and the Leica Medal of Excellence. His book, 50 Portraits, is one of the all-time great volumes on the subject of portrait photography, giving a sharp yet human insight to the process of making editorial portrait photographs. Greg is probably my favourite photographer ever and spending this time with him was one of the absolute highlights of my career. I tried to play it cool on the call but inside I was totally freaking out. The reason I'm such a big fan of Greg's work isn't because of who he has photographed, it's because of how he has produced absolutely beautiful photographs consistently, under high pressure for massive clients in shoots that usually last just a few minutes. For me, when you're doing photography for free, it's EASY. But when you're shooting a world leader or an A-list star for the cover of an international magazine and you've 5 minutes to do it, knowing that there are probably a thousand photographers ready and willing to take your place if you mess up, that's pressure, and for Greg to do it consistently for decades without leaning on a trademark style, technique or gimmick but by creating an array of unique photographs every time, it's phenomenal. Greg's expertise, experience and enthusiasm pour out in this conversation and you're going to hear a master craftsman lift the lid on what goes into making great portraits as well as some amazing anecdotes, an insight into the gear he used over the years and his thoughts on the current state of the photography industry. Marc Wilson is a documentary photographer from Bath, England. Marc's work has been published in National Geographic, The British Journal of photography, The Times, the Telegraph, Wired and he's exhibited his work round the UK and Europe. Marc's latest project, A Wounded Landscape, bears witness to the Holocaust through the stories of 22 Holocaust survivors. It was shot over 6 years at 160 locations through out Europe over 6 years and features over 350 photographs. We talk in depth about this project, the logistics of it, the challenges and sensitivities around it, the importance of continuing to talk about the Holocaust and how the process of making this work changed Marc as a person. We also touch on Marc's other work, The Last Stand, which documents the physical remnants of Second World War defence structures and their place in the landscapes that surround them. It's fascinating conversation with a thoughtful, sensitive and articulate photographer and I feel very privileged to share it with you. Cristina ‘Mitty' Mittermeier is one of the pioneers of conservation photography as we know it.In 2005 she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers to provide a platform for photographers working on environmental issues. In 2014 she co-founded SeaLegacy along with her partner Paul Nicklen, also one of the world's leading conservation photographers. SeaLegacy is a conservation organisation which uses a combination of art, science, visual storytelling and conservation to protect our oceans and build a healthy future for our planet.Cristina is a Sony Ambassador and her work has appeared in hundreds of publications, including National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times, CNN and TIME. Cristina is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award and the Imaging Award for Photographers Who Give Back. She was named one of the 100 Latinos Most Committed to Climate Action and is recognized as one of the World's top 40 Most Influential Outdoor Photographers by Outdoor Magazine. In 2022, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.Cristina's photography is as beautiful, powerful and important. Chris Orwig is a portrait photographer, author, teacher and Sony Ambassador from Santa Barbara, California. Chris first came on my radar many years ago and his grounded, connected, intimate, natural-light portraits really stayed with me.In his early 20s, Chris was hit by a car while skateboarding and during his recovery, his father gave him the gift of a camera. This camera gave him direction and purpose in life and he's never looked back. Chris has gone on to work with clients including Google, SPaceX, Adobe and has his work published in places like Rolling Stone, the New York Times and Esquire. He's also taught photography at College level for 10 years, written several books and he's a workshop leader and a mentor to other photographers around the world.Chris has a lot to say about photography and what goes into being a photographer and I was delighted to listen. My guest this week is Stefano Pellegrini, an astrophotographer based in Milan, Italy. Stefano only started astro photography in 2019 but during the pandemic in 2020, he was able to spend more time on his photogrpahy . The progress he made during this time led him to reprioritise his life, leaving a staff job as a designer for drinks company Di Sarono, to go freelance so he could devote more time to his photography. Since then, he's won Nasa's Astronomy Picture of the day and launched a series of tutorials which you can find on his website - link in show notes.Stefano shoots technically difficult images in remote and dangerous location combining techniques like Panoramic photography, long exposure photography and light painting which gives him hundreds of photographs that he combines into 1 final, stunning image in processing. Although the work is challenging and technical, Stefano's images have heart and a human touch which is fuelled by Stefano's combination of passion, creativity, craftsmanship and and dedication. If you're into this kind of photography, you're going to take so much away from this - if you're not, you're going to learn a few things and meet a fantastic, young photographer who's just at the beginning of what is sure to be an incredible photography journey. Wendy Bagnall is a landscape photographer based the south of England who's work was recently shown at the 2022 Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition. Wendy's work is unrestricted and playful and she uses different techniques to interpret the landscape, creating images that to evoke an emotional connection with the viewer.  Wendy got her first camera as a child but she went deeper into her photography during the pandemic when forced isolation gave her the opportunity to build a relationship with the landscape in her local area and fast-tracked her development as a photographer. Wendy is one of my favourite landscape photographers right now and this is definitely one of my favourite conversations I've had on the podcast. I found Wendy's whole attitude refreshing and inspirational and I came away from our time together thinking differently about my approach to my own photography. Kristy Ashton is a portrait photographer who was born in Australia but now lives and works in Scotland. Kristy's great great great grandfather was George Washington Wilson, one of the pioneers of outdoor photography who photographed Queen Victoria and John Brown in 1863 - so her connection to photography and to Scotland runs deep. Kristy's unique style is a culmination of a number of ingredients from her personal journey - an innate sense of creativity, a romantic dream of scotland and a love of renaissance painters resulting in images that are somehow otherworldly and completely authentic all at the same time. Ulla Lohmann is a documentary photographer and film maker from Lake Starnberg, Germany who regularly works for magazines and broadcasters, including National Geographic, GEO, BBC, Red Bull Media House and Stern View. Ulla has published a coffee-table book about the Dolomite Mountains for National Geographic and a text book about realizing her dreams. She is ambassador for Canon, Eizo, Manfrotto and F-Stop. She is an elected member of the German Photographic Society and she has been appointed as a fellow of the Explorer's Club in New York. Ulla also conducts workshops and photograohy  expeditions to active volcano sites around the world A child of 2 teachers, her imagination and curiosity were always encouraged and when she won a national science competition as a teenager, she used the winnings to fund her first trip around the world - and she's never looked back. Her dream, to descend into heart of an active volcano, was inspired by reading Jules Verne as a child and her film Spitting Distance, which follows the fulfilment of this dream, is one of the most gripping things I've ever seen. As intense as that is, as our conversation continues, you'll see that there are other parts of Ulla's journey which are even more emotional. If you're a regular listener,  you can probably tell I was al little nervous on this one - I was very excited to be talking with Ulla but also a little on edge because I knew I'd be asking some very personal questions so bare with me for that. Jonathan was named one of the 'Top 100 Photographers of All Time' by both the UK's Sunday Times newspaper and Professional Photographer Magazine.   His first book, SILVER,  was published in 2014, and in 2016 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). Our conversation covers the pivotal moments in Jonathan's life that led to him his signature style, how he creates his timeless images of horses, sailing boats and icebergs, the importance and value of staying on-brand and of course the stories behind some of his most beautiful images. Karen Waller is a photographer based in Adelaide, South Australia. It was Karen's ICM images of agave plants that first caught my eye but digging into her portfolio I found she's also a fantastic aerial photographer and an accomplished portrait photographer with an amazing and diverse portfolio. Karen's creative journey started in childhood when she was encouraged to draw and paint and she went on to gain a degree in Visual Arts. Although photography has become her chosen medium, her work is still informed by the painter within.  Karen's courageous curiosity has shaped a photographer who's work is quite unique and our conversation covers how she discovered ICM photography, how she has been able to use photography to get through difficult times, how she approaches new portrait subjects in the supermarket as well as the stories behind some of her most memorable photographs. Marlon du Toit is a wildlife photographer and safari guide based in South Africa. He literally grew up in a national park and he's been working as a safari guide for nearly 20 years. Marlon excels at capturing the beauty and brutality of life in the wild and his enthusiasm for conservation, wildlife and adventure is authentic and infectious.  Marlon has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the NBC Today show, and the Martha Stewart Show. His photography and travel experiences have been featured in international magazines including National Geographic and he's also an ambassador for Sony Alpha photogrpahy equipment. Julia Redl is a landscape photographer from Lake Constance in Germany. Julia has become one of my favourite landscape photographers over the last year or so for her minimalist landscapes, her thoughtful, intimate, close ups and her photographs of moving water. Julia's images always create some kind of mood and her use of composition almost creates a sense of motion, causing your eye to move around the frame.  We talk about her recent trip to Lofoten in Norway, photographing in the rain, photographing in the desert, what she learned from tailoring that applies to her photography, persistance and so much more. There's a lot to take way from this thoughtful photographer who has a really unique eye. Monty Rakusen specialises in photographing Industry, Engineering, Science and Energy, creating unique brand-building images that really stand out. Monty works collaboratively with clients and syndicates his pictures through image libraries like Image Source and Getty. He has created a library of over 12,000 images of the absolute highest quality which are used in a variety of ways.  Commercial  and industrial photogaphy has been a big part of my career and I've always looked up to Monty's work which is so immaculate, technically spot-on but retains a warmth and personality that really connects to the viewer and humanises some big ideas. We talk about how Monty's career has changed over the years, how he builds pictures, his editing workflow and much more. Stephanie Johnson is an ICM photographer based in Iowa in the USA. Stephanie is the founder, creator and publisher of ICM photography Magazine - a first-of-its-kind e-magazine about ICM photography. Stephanie, along with Kaisa Siren and Morag Paterson, also runs the ICM PhotoMag Network - an online community dedicated to educating and mentoring ICM photographers from around the world. Matt Kennedy is a motion picture stills photographer from California. Matt has worked on movies including Spiderman, No Way Home, Black Panther, Fast and Furious 8 as well as the new Obi Wan Kenobi series for Disney, Star Trek Picard and many more movies that you've probably seen. Matt has been nominated for several International Cinematographers Guild awards, In 2018, he was invited to join the prestigous Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers and some of his photographs from Black Panther are displayed in the Smothsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.    We talk about how Matt first got into the movie business, how he became a unit still photographer, what it was like working on the latest Spiderman film, which went on to become one of the biggest movies of all time and some of the experiences he's had along the way. George Steinmetz is a documentary photographer based in New Jersey, who has shot more than 40 major photo essays for National Geographic. He has won three prizes from World Press Photo, the Environmental Vision award from Pictures of the Year, a citation from the Overseas Press Club, he was named National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year in 2008 and he has a 1 million strong following on Instagram. George is best know for his aerial photography, mainly using a motorised paraglider, which enables him to capture unique images of places inaccessible by traditional aircraft. His restless curiosity for the unknown drove him to hitchhike across Africa as a young man and has been the drive behind his epic body of work which covers remote landscapes, climate change and global food supply.  George's work has huge scope and scale and our conversation touches on a few of George's long-term projects, how and why he got into aerial photography and how he was almost shot with an arrow. Robin Moore is a  wildlife photographer and conservationist who's images have been featured in National Geographic, the Economist, Esquire magazine, the Telegraph Magazine, PDN, American Photo magazine, Outdoor Photographer, Wanderlust, and many more publications and you've probably seen his photographs of Nairobi's Giraffe Hotel or Giraffe Manor which went viral a few years ago. He's been a finalist in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, a winner of American Photo Images of the year and a winner of Outdoor Photographer's Art of Expression Award. Robin's passion for the natural world started in the Scottish highlands and has taken him to Cameroon, Haiti, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Costa Rica and just about everywhere else. Marc Pickering is a landscape photographer based in Argyll, Scotland. He is the winner of the Landscape Category of the 2021 Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year for his image, First Light, Loch Ederline. Marc is uniquely in-tune with the Scottish landscape. He spends all day outdoors through his day job, working for Forestry and Land Scotland, helping to manage Scotland's woodlands. I was curious as to how this influences his landscape photography and we also talk about his experiences in Lofoten in Norway as well as his commissioned work for clients including Maserati and Amazon. Marsel Van Oosten is a nature photographer based in South Africa, originally from the Netherlands. As well as being a regular contributor to National Geographic, he's also won Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Travel Photographer of the Year, Landscape Photographer of the Year, European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, IPA Nature Photographer of the Year, the National Geographic Traveller Award and many many more awards. Before photography, Marsel had a successful career in advertising and in our conversation, he shares the amazing story of how he took a year long journey around Africa to build his portfolio when he began his career as a nature photographer. Marsel has just published a coffee table book, Mother - A Tribute to Mother Earth which draws on his epic portfolio to shine a light on some of the threats our planet is facing . We talk about the making of the book, about how his background in advertising and graphic design informs his photography, what he's thinking when he looks through the viewfinder, the stories behind some of his photographs and much much more. Nikola Kostic is a travel and documentary photographer and film maker based in Indonesia. Nikola moved to Bali in 1998 from his home country of Serbia and fell into photography when his uncle asked him to photograph some jewellery. He quickly found himself as a busy, commercial photographer as Bali transitioned from a sleepy island to a bustling tourist hotspot. Nikola's work is incredibly diverse featuring portraits, food, dance, interiors, cityscapes, golf courses and much more. All of this experience pours into his latest project - making a documentary film about the construction of the first sustainable, zero waste island in south east Asia, which is being developed by his wife, a lady who also builds luxury yachts. I really enjoyed meeting Nikola - he's such a passionate and interesting guy who is a great story teller and a fantastic photographer. Scott Hargis, based in Oakland, California, is one of Americas finest Architecture and Interior Photographers. After being burned out in a corporate job Scott took up photography in his mid 30s, eventually niching in to real estate photography before specialising in architecture and interiors. Our conversation covers how Scott creates photographs the FEEL the way a room feels, as well as really digging into some of the nuances of how he works like the importance of including a human element, chiaroscuro, visual acoustics and why he carries a makeup mirror with him at all times. For me, as a working, assignment photographer I LOVED this conversation and hearing how Scott combines his impressive technical skills with an ability to communicate emotionally through his photography was truly inspiring to me. Gregory Heisler is a portrait photographer based in Syracuse, New York who has photographed Bill Clinton, George H Bush, George W Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, Yasser Arafat, Benjamin Netanyahu, Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani, Bruce Springsteen, Chinua Achebe, Denzel Washington, Mick Jagger, Partick Stewart, Al Paccino, Hugh Grant, Tim Burton, Joni Mitchell, Liam Neeson, Muhammad Ali, Carl Lewis, Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Gates, Bono and countless more household names for publications like Life Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Rolling Stone, ESPN, New York Times Magazine. Greg has shot over 70 covers for Time Magazine and he has also photographed major advertising campaigns for clients including American Express, Ford, Guinness, Merrill Lynch, Nike, Pfizer and Reebok. Gregory is the recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award and the Leica Medal of Excellence. His book, 50 Portraits, is one of the all-time great volumes on the subject of portrait photography, giving a sharp yet human insight to the process of making editorial portrait photographs. Greg is probably my favourite photographer ever and spending this time with him was one of the absolute highlights of my career. I tried to play it cool on the call but inside I was totally freaking out. The reason I'm such a big fan of Greg's work isn't because of who he has photographed, it's because of how he has produced absolutely beautiful photographs consistently, under high pressure for massive clients in shoots that usually last just a few minutes. For me, when you're doing photography for free, it's EASY. But when you're shooting a world leader or an A-list star for the cover of an international magazine and you've 5 minutes to do it, knowing that there are probably a thousand photographers ready and willing to take your place if you mess up, that's pressure, and for Greg to do it consistently for decades without leaning on a trademark style, technique or gimmick but by creating an array of unique photographs every time, it's phenomenal. Greg's expertise, experience and enthusiasm pour out in this conversation and you're going to hear a master craftsman lift the lid on what goes into making great portraits as well as some amazing anecdotes, an insight into the gear he used over the years and his thoughts on the current state of the photography industry. Marc Wilson is a documentary photographer from Bath, England. Marc's work has been published in National Geographic, The British Journal of Photography, The Times, the Telegraph, Wired and he's exhibited his work round the UK and Europe.  Marc's latest project, A Wounded Landscape, bears witness to the Holocaust through the stories of 22 Holocaust survivors. It was shot over 6 years at 160 locations through out Europe and features over 350 photographs. We talk in depth about this project, the logistics of it, the challenges and sensitivities around it, the importance of continuing to talk about the Holocaust and how the process of making this work changed Marc as a person.  We also touch on Marc's other work, The Last Stand, which documents the physical remnants of Second World War defence structures and their place in the landscapes that surround them. It's fascinating conversation with a thoughtful, sensitive and articulate photographer and I feel very privileged to share it with you. Dylan Nardini is the 2021 Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year and the winner of the 2021 British Photography Awards Landscape Category. Dylan is a self-taught photographer who has a knack for finding unknown locations and revisiting them again and again until he finds them in the best conditions. Dylan also shoots amazing abstracts and dabbles with Infra red photogrpahy. We touch on all of these things as well as covering Dylan's photography origins, shooting landscapes with a 50mm lens, dropping a camera in the sea and much more. Niall Benvie is a photographer originally from Scotland who's now based in Burgundy, France. Niall grew up on a berry farm in the north east of Scotland and first got into photography to document the bird and plant life in his local area. After studying Geography at university , his photography interest turned into a 30 year career as a photographer, writer and photography guide. Niall is probably best known for his photographs of plants and animals using a field studio to create unique and beautiful images which are reminiscent the kind of illustrations you'd find in an old encyclopaedia or field guide.  Our conversation covers Niall's upbringing, his early awareness of environmentalism, his varied career, the rhythms of creativity and much more. Dr Alexander Mustard MBE, better known as Alex Mustard, has been taking underwater photographs since he was just 9 years old and has worked as a full time underwater photographer since 2004. Alex has a PhD in Marine Ecology and his combination of subject-matter expertise, underwater photography experience, technical innovation and sheer passion for what he does makes him one of the absolute best in the world at what he does. Alex photography has won many awards including European Wildlife photographer of the Year in 2013, 4x category wins in the British Wildlife Photography Awards and the ADEX Award for Extraordinary Contrubidon to Underwater Photography in 2016. In 2018, he was made an MBE for his achievements as an underwater photographer. He's written more than 500 articles for photography, Marine, wildlife and diving publications as well as 5 books including Underwater Photography Masterclass. He is the inventor of Magic Filters, a filter system specifically for underwater photography, he is the associate editor of http://Wetpixel.com (Wetpixel.com) an online community for underwater photographers and he teaches underwater photography workshops all around the world. So, its fair to say we're talking to an expert here!  I know nothing about this kind of photography so it was fascinating for me to sit with Alex and just witness his sheer enthusiasm for what does. Kai Hornung is a landscape and fine art photographer from Hanover. Germany, who won the 2020 International Landscape Photograph of the Year just a few years after getting serious about photography. Paul Sanders is a landscape photographer based in Kent, England. Paul is a former picture editor for the Times newspaper, a job that engulfed his life and, in his words, made him lose touch with reality. When the demands of the job forced him to step away, Paul looked to landscape photography to help rediscover a balance in his life and he now specialises in mindful landscape photography, an approach that emphasises slowing down and focusing on the process of creating the photograph rather than on the photograph itself. This approach has resonated with a lot of people and Paul now runs mindful photography workshops and retreats for his own ‘Discover Still' brand and also for leading photography workshop company Ocean Capture. Our conversation delves into Paul's backstory at the Times which really gives context for the landscape work he's doing now. We also talk about his approach to his work, imposter syndrome, shooting in a square format and much more. I really enjoyed talking with Paul and I appreciate his openness in our conversation. Grégory Escande is a photographer based in Mozambique. Grég is a teacher who's lived in Africa for 20 years and he's created a unique style of photography which he describes as 'studio in the street'. Grég's photography captures the strength and vibrancy of the people of Maputo, the sheer joy of childhood in his shots of kids playing as well as touching on the the hard realities of life in what is widely considered one of the poorest countries in the world.
