International award-winning photographer Dave Sandford is best known for his dramatic collection, Lake Erie - Liquid Mountains.  Submerging himself into the freezing waters of Erie, Sandford's striking images reveal the violent & breathtaking beauty of this Great Lake. His viral waves paved the way for a lifelong dream, a meaningful career in conservation & wildlife photography.   Sandford, a native of London, ON. Canada originally established himself as a world class photographer around the ‘frozen ponds' of the National Hockey League. During Sandford's time at his Alma Mater - Toronto Metropolitan University, Sandford channelled himself into the world of professional sports photography. Sandford's work in sports quickly grabbed the attention of others & he found himself with a rinkside seat at the professional ranks before he even completed his degree.   Sandford's storied career in professional sports brought him international recognition & established Sandford early on as one of the leaders in the industry. With over 25 years of experience Sandford's work has landed him roles with sports giants such as the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, the Canadian Olympic Committee, Sports Illustrated and Getty Images to name a few. While Sandford still has a foothold on pro sports, these days you are more likely to find Dave face to face with a polar bear on frozen tundra or dancing with whales under the sea.   Throughout Sandford's career the call of the wild continually whispered in his ear.  Sandford's passion for nature and wildlife led Dave down a path with strong ties to conservation. In 2015 when Sandford's Liquid Mountain's grabbed the world by storm, Sandford channelled that momentum at this pivotal point in his career, to make the shift into nature photography.   Seizing opportunities in wildlife conservation, Sandford quickly transitioned into this role, once again establishing himself as sought-after leader in the industry.  Sandford turned this into his opportunity to roam where the wild things are.   Canadian to the core, and similarly to his spirit animal, the polar bear - Sandford is right at home when the mercury dips well below the freezing mark. Making his first trip to the Arctic in 1997, Sandford now has over 20 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica to his credit. With saltwater coursing through his veins, Sandford has also taken his photographic skills into the world's oceans, swimming alongside natures gentle giants (whales) or finding himself face to face with another of Sandford's favourite subject's, the great white shark.   Claws, paws or jaws, wide open spaces or tiny places, Sandford enjoys showcasing the beauty of our natural world, blended with exciting and insightful storytelling from his adventures both near and far. It is Sandford's hope that by sharing what he loves, others will share in that love - promoting positive change in the preservation of our wild spaces and those wonderful creatures who inhabit them. You can find Sandford's work in many traditional international publications including National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, Canadian Geographic, Reader's Digest, The Surfer's Journal, MacLean's, Natures Best and many others.  Follow online at davesandfordphotos.com / Instagram: @davesandford /  Facebook: Sandford Photography / Twitter: @dave_sandford / TikTok: @davesandford and LinkedIn: Dave Sandford --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

Exactly Enough Time

I recently stayed at my brother's house and picked up an issue of National Geographic and read an article titled, Are We Born to Wander? By author and speaker, Eric Weiner. I loved reading his thoughts on travel and decided I wanted to share some of my own go-see-do AND learn experiences in today's episode. I started by opening my Notes app and adding to list I started last year of ALL the places I've been. Next to each I want to briefly describe an experience or take away from my time there. Of course anyone can do this, but most people never will. I get it. We're busy. But I also believe there are ways to document—even personal ways—that can be worked into the busiest of days. At the end of the episode I'm inviting you to join me for a NEW online class, called Quick Trip Travel (so stay tuned). So, as I was doing a little digging for an opening song, I came across Brenda Tharp, her photography and blog. I loved this from her …Changes in latitude, changes in attitude … I have always loved that phrase in Jimmy Buffet's popular song. When we move about the country or world, the changes in our latitude bring about changes in our attitude. How could they not? We are experiencing new scenery, new ways the light illuminates the land, possibly new birds and animals. We are meeting new people, having fresh experiences, and I don't know about you, but this always opens my heart and soul to see and appreciate the places I visit.Look more about Brenda and her work here:Outdoor Photographer & BloggerMy opportunities to travel a bit—both inside the United States and abroad—have changed me. What I have seen has amazed me and often challenged my thinking. People and cities and museums and historical sites help me shape new thoughts and beliefs. I've stood in Trafalgar Square and at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. I've sat in the shade of the Golden Temple in Kyoto, Japan and I've been in Nelson Mandela's house in Soweto, South Africa. I've floated a river in Belize that winds through dark caves and jungle. It doesn't really matter where I go or what I do. Each time and in every place I understand more clearly all that I do NOT know, and as counterintuitive as it sounds, I really like that. This is the main reason I still want to go. Especially after a pandemic that has threatened our wanderings. I've admired too many people and cultures that I had previously only known in text books or on Wikipedia pages and I'm simply not done learning about and exploring this BIG, strange, beautiful and inspiring world that we live in. “Travel is not a rational activity. It makes no sense to squeeze yourself into an alleged seat only to be hurled at frightening speed to a distant place where you don't speak the language or know the customs. All at great expense. If we stopped to do the cost-benefit analysis, we'd never go anywhere. And yet we do. ” — Eric Weiner My hope is that something I share today will inspire you to plan a trip—to the lake, to a national monument or park or to a new country halfway across the world.

Her father commits suicide, her mother has never noticed where she is, and at 15, she falls in love with a 27-year-old photographer. When she comes of age, she's about to marry him, but someone else has turned her head, Ted Neal, a charismatic activist on his way to Mississippi for 1964's Freedom Summer. Alex just wants to take pictures, but she and Ted invite some of his friends to live together in a collective that functions like a sort of family. Alex is happy, but the conversations focus in on anti-war movement of the 60s, and some of the so-called family members get radicalized by the ‘Weathermen.' Alex is incensed to learn that the FBI is following her even after the ‘family' disperses and shocked when Ted disappears. Eleven years later he shows up again, but now he's dying and Alex, who hasn't remarried, has to figure out what love means. One of the most influential outdoor photographers in the industry Scott Markowitz talks about his career, some unique shooting experiences, and tips on how to become an Outdoor Photographer.   Facebook Twitter Instagram   The Outdoor Biz Podcast   Please give us a rating and review HERE   Show Notes Intro to Outdoors and Photography My stepping stone in, was, as a skier and becoming a professional skier and then moving onto the other side, from one side of the lens to the other, basically. I was a freestyle skier for oh three or four years competing on the pro mogul tour and then skiing in various ski movies and skiing for various photographers in the day. Intro to Photography I always had an interest in it growing up. I remember when I was really young, I had one of those box cameras and always enjoyed just shooting. But I guess my first,  SLR cameras probably, I got just out of high school, and I would take photos of friends and just carry a camera with me just as a hobby and, make prints and things like that. That was my first camera. And then my first First real pro camera, I think one summer I decided, I was going to move into this profession a little bit after spending a lot of time in front of the camera, I figured I had a pretty good eye for it. And I thought it would be some fun to try and keep me skiing. So I bought a camera and started shooting and then, spent that a winter kind of half being a pro skier and half being, trying to start to shoot. And, that was kinda how I got into this business. First outdoor commercial shoot Actually, my first outdoor commercial shoot was for one of my ski sponsors for Elan Skis. So at the time, I was skiing competitively for Elan. And I had a small portfolio of images. So I basically went to them and said, Hey, here's some of my photos that I'm shooting myself and they're like, Oh, great. Do you want to shoot something for us? So it was a natural progression because I already had my foot in the door and had good connections in the industry. It was a pretty easy move for me, fortunately, so that was, having like I said, having the connections in the outdoor industry and in the ski industry definitely helped me move up pretty quickly. Advice I think If you're going to get into it, you really have to develop your skills and become an excellent photographer, not just a good photographer or videographer for that matter. I think you have to be really on top of your game, try to develop your own vision. Don't just copy what's out there, think about what it is, why you want to be a photographer, and what it is you want to photograph, and really try to develop your skills to a high level. And try to find a niche that's gonna work for you. Cause it is a challenging business and definitely not getting any less challenging. I would say also, as a photographer, I think it's important to shoot photo and video to have those dual skills, especially if you can develop good editing skills. I think that's important as well. But yeah, if you can have, a good overall package you can offer to a client, that's definitely a bonus. Books I'd say growing up one series. I liked to read was Carlos Casteneda. I always liked his books growing up. And I think that definitely influenced me. One book I heard recently that I thought was really good was Trevor Noah's Born a Crime. It's really good, it was an audiobook and he was reading it. I just enjoy him so it was cool to hear him read it. Favorite Piece of Gear under $100 Dakine wind stopper gloves. We talk about her career, how she became a writer and she has great advice for anyone looking to begin a career writing and photographing in the Outdoor space. Show Notes Introduction to the Outdoors I was born into it I think. I grew up in Lake Placid, New York, and the Adirondacks Saranac Lake. My dad was really into doing stuff outdoors, like skiing in particular, but you know, we hiked and we went fishing now and again, and we were just doing what all other families are doing? We'd go out on the lakes paddling or we'd water ski. I went to summer camp and, it was just our lifestyle and it's a lifestyle I've embraced my whole life. Things we talked about Dartmouth College Outings Club US Ski Team ESPN The Travel Channel Ski New England Wildlife Journal -PBS Outdoor Writers Association of America OWAA Conferences OWAA Scholarships & Fellowships Birds and Blooms Wyoming Wildlife Colorado Outdoors New Hampshire Wildlife Journal US Ski Hall of Fame Mountain Health Co-Op Trade Show Banner Get outdoors! Advice for folks wanting to get into the outdoor biz or into, or photography So a lot of people do it through a university degree, which is fine. If you had that opportunity, great, I did not. I got into it by being outdoors. But the key is no matter how you do it, and especially if you do it by the route that I took, which was literally on the job training. You really have to pick your mentors and really learn what you want to do. You might like to take pictures, let's take photography. You might like to take photos, get some good gear, take some training from somebody that you really like, what they do photographically Same with writing. You might think you write well, but read a lot of other people's writing and really try to get your work critiqued. There's nothing better than a writing critique or a photo critique in a workshop because you learn so much and you can't do it in isolation. I work as a freelancer and I spent many hours in the outdoors and also in my office by myself, but that time with colleagues and other people, whether it's in a workshop that I'm leading or a workshop I'm giving or at an OWAA conference or another conference. That's really valuable time because you can't do it in a vacuum, even though a lot of times you are by yourself. So that's my biggest piece of advice is really look at what other people are doing. And, and especially those people that are successful and that are similar. As a writer or as a photographer, you still have to learn the basics. You still have to know how to write with good grammar, and then you can take your poetic license.  It's unlikely that you're going to get published in national geographic your first time out, or outdoor life or whatever. You want to try to get stuff locally or regionally. They're not going to pay as well, so don't give up your day job yet. But as it grows, you'll find your path. It's just like anything, you have to build your portfolio. I think I've learned the most by really trying to understand what successful people are doing and, and understanding the craft, from that basic level. In 2012, in partnership with The Highlands Biological Foundation, he co-founded Backyard Naturalists, whose mission is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world in children through science, art and technology. Clay's current major focus is on North America's native bees and the important roles that they play in our lives. Clay is passionate about spreading the message that a connection to nature begins at home and is always seeking out new ways to promote this concept through his photography, writing, presentations and community involvement. For the past decade Clay has regularly partnered with organizations to develop imagery that can be used to support conservation. He is a past president for the North American Nature Photography Association and serves on the board of CREA, an organization dedicated to conserving critical habitat in the Panamanian rainforest.

You'd think I'd be used to this by now - but I'd be lying if I told you that were the case. Sometimes, you take a step a back after a recording, and you have to take it in and ask yourself: "Did that really happen?" I've been a fan of my next guest's work and craft for over 10+ years as he has quite honestly been one of my podcasting and photography heroes. Indeed, a lot of the effort I've put into this very podcast you're listening to have been, in many ways, inspired by him. And he certainly has the track record to show for it. With over 25 years of experience in the photographic industry, Ibarionex Perello is the author 6 successful books including Chasing the Light: Improving Your Photography Using Available Light and his latest, Making Photographs : Developing a Personal Visual Workflow. As a podcaster, he is the producer and host of the wildly popular The Candid Frame podcast,  which he has been producing and hosting for 13 years as of this recording. After nearly 500 episodes, his dedication and exemplary consistency have made this podcast a staple within photography circles. As a remarkable photographer, his photographs and articles have appeared in numerous publications and websites including Digital Photo Pro, Outdoor Photographer, Rangefinder, and Popular Photography just to name a few. As an educator, he is a course instructor at the Los Angeles Center of Photography where he heads regular workshops on Street Photography. With a sense of genuine warmth and kindness, Ibarionex shared his personal insights on dedication, consistency, doing the work, not buying into your own hype, his recent diagnosis with ADHD and so much more... What's it like to meet your heroes? Thanks to a delightful combination intent, action, preparation and opportunity, I got to find out. This one was a very personal victory for me, in more ways than one. And yet another amazing conversation, which I hope you'll enjoy. We talk about how he got his start in the hunting industry, how networking and saying "yes" has changed his life, and how he was once Joe Rogan's personal photographer (while true, I mostly added that for search results.) Also he has a bus that you may have heard about a time or two.  Enjoy.

I am glad to say that today's episode is saturated with value and as a thank you for all this wonderful free content I ask that you share this interview with your facebook and twitter networks to let more people know they are welcome to join Photo World and the Take & Talk Pics Podcast. Hi! My name is Colleen Miniuk-Sperry (pronounced "Min-ick-Spare-ee"). I'm a Corporate-America-escapee-turned-full-time-freelance-outdoor-photographer-and-writer, supporting a wide range of assignments for editorial and commercial clients. Specializing in outdoor recreation, nature, conservation, and travel, my work has been published in National Geographic calendars, Arizona Highways magazine, books, and calendars, Outdoor Photographer, AAA Highroads, AAA VIA, Extraordinary Vision, National Parks Traveler, Smith-Southwestern calendars, and a broad variety of other publications. In November 2011, I co-authored and published the award-winning book, Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers, A Guide to When, Where, and How with my good friend and fellow photographer, Paul Gill. After selling out the 1st edition, we published the 2nd edition of this title in March 2015. In addition, I've been selected three times as an Artist-in-Residence with Acadia National Park in Maine (November 2010, October 2011, and January 2013) which enabled me to author and publish mysecond award-winning guidebook, Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When, Where, and How in February 2014. In July 2015, I published my first instructional photography eBook titled, Seeing the Light in Outdoor Photography. I'm just as excited to help others learn photography as I am making my own images, so I've proudly led photography workshops for the Arizona Highways Photography Workshops (AHPW), Moab Photography Symposium, The Nature Conservancy, Arizona Wildlife Federation's "Becoming an Outdoor Woman," Through Each Others Eyes, and numerous private clients. As an active Associate of Through Each Other Eyes (TEOE), I have proudly participated in cultural photographic exchanges and international exhibitions with Japan, Mexico, and Canada. Being a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) has allowed me the opportunity for unrivaled personal growth and new friendships with like-minded and extremely talented outdoor communicators. I've served as a Board Member since September 2013 and have won numerous Excellence in Craft awards for my photography, book, and blog, as well as the prestigious 2010 President’s Choice Award, the 2013 People’s Choice Award, and the 2014 and 2015 Outstanding Board Member Award. Growing up in Ohio, Arkansas, and Illinois, becoming a photographer or writer never crossed my mind. In 1997, armed with a Bachelor of Business Administration-Computer Information Systems degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona to begin a 10-year project management career at Intel Corporation. Initially as an outlet to corporate life, I began making photographs of the intriguing landscapes in the West in late 2001 during my "Introduction to Photography" class at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Two years later, I started selling my photographs at art shows across Arizona. Then, in February 2007, I left the grey cubicle walls of Corporate America to pursue a full-time career in photography and writing. Now, I can't imagine life without wandering with a camera or a notebook in hand! Though I spend a significant amount of time on the road across the United States, I currently reside in Chandler, Arizona with my husband, Craig and cat, Nolan.  Recommended Resource: DOF Master.com Photographer’s Ephemeris W: cms-photo.com Blog: youcansleepwhenyouredead.com Workshops: cms-photo.com/Workshops Be sure to Subscribe to our newsletter! 2015 © Take&TalkPics

102 Guy Tal - Artist Working with Photography Today’s featured guest is Guy Tal Guy is a landscape photographer, artist, educator, and public speaker. He does not consider himself a photographer who makes art but rather an artists working in the medium of photography. Guy conducts several workshops throughout the western United States and educates through talks along with the 7 books he has published; furthermore his work has been featured in publications such as LensWork Magazine, Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, and many others. “Photography is an adventure just as life is an adventure and if man wishes to express himself photographically he must understand, surly to a certain extent, his relationship to life.” – Harry Callahan I am a professional artist, author, photographer, educator and public speaker. I believe that the practice of creative pursuits manifests not only in the making of art, but also has the ability to transform and enrich life, facilitate meaningful and rewarding experiences, and foster contentment and satisfaction through life-long discovery and learning. In photography I strive to create images that speak to wildness – the quality of being attuned to, and inspired by, the wild. Many of my images also articulate my intimate connection with the natural landscape, particularly that of my home, and the friendship I found with certain places. Rather than glimpses of superficial beauty, I wish for my work to speak to a deep familiarity with my subjects, revealing something of the role they play in my life – a relationship as intricate as any I have had with another person. The things I photograph are not just attractive models to me, they are temples and sanctuaries and multi-dimensional characters in my own story, as I am in theirs. I do not photograph for the sake of photography, and not to simply document the external appearance of things, no matter how objectively appealing. Instead, I photograph as a means of exploring and expressing things that I cannot express in any other way, and because it is important to me to share them. I do not photograph things; I photograph my love for them, and sometimes I photograph my love through them. I do not consider myself a photographer who creates art, but rather an artist working in the medium of photography. Where some photographers take a representational approach to the landscape, I wish instead to use visual elements and natural aesthetics as evocative metaphors, creating images that are not merely of, but about places and things that have become personally meaningful to me.

Who Will Rule the Sky? The Coming Drone Policy Wars Matt Cagle Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Attorney, ACLU of Northern California Eric Cheng General Manager, DJI SF and Director of Aerial Imaging, DJI Your private drone opens up limitless possibilities – how can manufacturers and policymakers ensure you are able to realize them? As private drone ownership becomes the norm, drone makers and lawmakers will need to make important policy decisions that account for the privacy and free speech issues raised by this new technology. What legal and technical rules are being considered right now, and how might they affect your ability to do things like record footage at a city park, monitor police at a protest, or fly near a government building? These decisions will dictate the technical limitations (or lack thereof) placed on drones, and the legal consequences of operating them. Join Eric Cheng, General Manager of DJI SF and DJI's Director of Aerial Imaging, and Matt Cagle, a Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Attorney with the ACLU of Northern California, to discuss the policy issues at this leading edge of law and consumer technologies. Introducing Ibarionex Perello  Ibarionex Perello is a man who lives the creative life and knows how to parlay his lifestyle into a career.  He is a photographer, writer, educator, and podcast host.  In his previous life, Ibarionex was an editor for some photography magazines including Outdoor Photographer.  During his long Los Angeles commutes, he got into the habit of listening to books on tape and eventually podcasts.  He found that most of the photography podcasts he was listening to revolved around equipment choices and ways to practice photography, but not so much about the creative process.  So, Ibarionex decided to fill the void leveraging the skills he had as both a photographer and editor. Ibarionex started The Candid Frame in 2006 as a show with conversations with photographers and has since gone on to produce more than 250 episodes.  He has since been able to make podcasting a main component of his income and was able to retire from his editor's job.  He did this by producing a show that he would want to listen to personally and now has a devoted audience of listeners from amateurs to pros.  The authority the podcast gave him also offered Ibarionex the opportunity to write books on photography including “Chasing the Light: Improving Your Photography Using Available Light”. Ibarionex is a proponent of living a creative life and believes everyone should find an opportunity everyday to do something creative.   You might think to yourself that you are not a creative person, but you would be wrong; everyone can be creative.  You don't have to be a photographer, painter, singer, etc.  It can be as simple as creating a moment, or striking up an interesting conversation with someone.  These creative moments will add more than you think to your lifestyle.   In this episode  Ibarionex tells us about the importance of living the creative life and gives suggestions to how to start.  He fills us in on what he believes to be the best interview style.  Greg is reminded of uncomfortable interviews he has heard in the past.  Dave is encouraged by Ibarionex's interview style of conversations, and Dave and Greg decide to go skipping arm-in-arm down the street.   Links and References -  Ibarionex's Email -  Ibarionex's Website - Ibarionex's Facebook -  Ibarionex's Twitter -  Ibarionex's Google + - Q Interview with Billy Bob Thornton     Learn more about your ad choices.
