Oh my god, don't answer the phone! Or maybe you should? Well, we found out what happens "When A Stranger Calls Back" and it's not good! And also it's not the same stranger. New teenager. New scary guy. Same Carol Kane and Charles Durning. Is this the scariest movie Jason has ever seen? Did Jules see this as a kid and check corners of his house with a bat cause that dude could be there? I guess you'll have to find out in this here episode of We Doing Spookies.
In horror's illustrious history of films built around unwanted phone calls, When A Stranger Calls Back might be the oddest. This week's episode is about stalkers, sequels, final girls, and ... ventriloquism? We welcome horror journalist Gem Seddon (Vulture, Fangoria) onto the show for a discussion about a franchise continuation that is most unexpected. Our latest episode was destined to happen ever since Gem passionately wrote about When A Stranger Calls Back for Certified Forgotten: The Website, so it's a pleasure to finally make this conversation happen.

THIS WEEK: Black Christmas (1974), When A Stranger Calls (1979), When A Stranger Calls Back (1993)Jake just moved into a new house so it seems like a great time to remind him that psychopaths are always hiding in your attic so they can do terrible shit and then call you up and tell you about it. As a bonus, we got to watch a couple of classic horror flicks and a long gap made-for-tv sequel that is inexplicably great.Support Optimism Vaccine on Patreon

As much as I love talking about movies in general, it's about damn time I took myself back to the theater setting for some good old school and cheesy psycho slashing... And honestly, the movie theater is always a great setting for some carnage candy (just check out Demons 1985). But there isn't the average carnage per say in this one and where it lacks in violence, it damn sure makes up for it with humor and spectacle. Jill Schoelen not only has a bday today, but it also no stranger to the genre (The Stepfather, When A Stranger Calls Back) and I think she's very much slept on. She deserves some final girl acknowledgement. And she is sure enough going to get it here. Enjoy, people.
Herbst! "The Hills Have Eyes", "Career Opportunities", "Housebound", "Legend of the Drunken Master", "Kill List", "Breakdown", "When A Stranger Calls Back", "Last Man On Earth, "The Executioner", "Nightbreed". When A Stranger Calls (1979) Directed by Fred Walton and taking a nod through urban legend about a babysitter and the man upstairs. The film's opening 20 minutes is considered one of the scariest ever filmed. So much so that Wes Craven would copy this for the successful Scream series. The film stars Carol Kane, Charles Durning, and Colleen Dewhurst. The film was remade in 2006 and a sequel called When A Stranger Calls Back in 1993 as a television film which is considered one of the best sequels of a horror film. Both are now repackaged together in a special blu-ray box set. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Directed by Tobe Hopper and written by Hopper and Kim Henkel. The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. The film stars Marilyn Burns, Paul A Partain, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow and Gunnar Hansen. Upon its initial release in 1974, the film was banned in several countries. The film has now been re-assessed and considered a classic within the horror genre. The film has spawned several sequels and plenty of imitators.
