Matt Williams utilizes a character-centric approach in creating and developing iconic television series, including Roseanne and Home Improvement. The Humanitas Prize and 6-time Emmy nominated Evansville native received graduate degrees in directing and acting, and embarked on a host of television commercials, as an actor, before realizing his talent and bliss as the driving force behind impactful, relatable film and television projects. After cutting his teeth as an actor (and de facto writer and re-writer) on the CBN soap, Another Life, Matt produced and joined the writing staff of The Cosby Show during its premiere season. It was there where he learned the relevance of inviting the audience to the family table — a concept that bore fruit with regard to the development of Roseanne. In the years which followed, Matt co-created and executive produced a number of television shows under the umbrella of Wind Dancer, the production company he founded with Carmen Finestra and David McFadzean, the latter whom Matt first met at University of Evansville, which include Home Improvement, Buddies, Thunder Alley and Soul Man. He directed and produced the films Where the Heart Is, starring Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd, about a young woman who delivers a baby in a Wal Mart after being abandoned by the latter's father in the parking lot, and her journey of growth and self-discovery which follows; and Walker Payne, which he also co-wrote, and starred Jason Patric, Bruce Dern, Drea de Matteo and the legendary Sam Shepard and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Additional producing efforts include What Women Want, Bernie, As Cool as I Am and Wild Hearts Can't be Broken. The focus of our discussion was his latest book, Glimpses: A Comedy Writer's Take on Life, Love and All That Spiritual Stuff.Opening Credits: Lobo Loco - Room of Longing B (ID 2240) I CC BY-NC-SA 4.0; Anitek - Bricolage I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US. Actress Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, That Was Then…This Is Now, Popcorn) 29 years ago, actress Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, That Was Then…This Is Now, Popcorn) abruptly retired from acting at the height of her career. Now, as she makes her triumphant return in front of the camera, we are thrilled to have her join us for a beautiful conversation about self-worth, empathy, generational trauma, and how to leave the world better than how we came into it. Beginning with her first theatrical role in Joel Schumacher's D.C. Cab, to being cast alongside Emilio Estevez and Craig Sheffer in S.E. Hinton's That Was Then…This Is Now, to her experience joining the cast of slasher Popcorn after more than half of the film had already been shot, Jill's performances are always memorable. Jill shares how problematic the writing for female characters was in the 80's, and discusses her time on screen in Thunder Alley, Rich Girl, & Little House On The Prairie. The cup of gratitude & joy runneth over in this interview. Jill is phenomenal person with a great perspective! Dig our show? Jeff Martin is an American musician, singer and drummer who has sung for the bands Racer X, Bad Dog, Surgical Steel and St. Michael and has played drums for the bands Badlands, the Michael Schenker Group, Blindside Blues Band, Red Sea, St. Michael and The Electric Fence, a side project with Paul Gilbert and Russ Parrish (aka Satchel from Steel Panther). Jeff played drums om albums and tours for UFO, Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, and Dokken. He played drums in Surgical Steel before switching to lead vocals and was the drummer/lead vocalist for St. Michael, both Phoenix, AZ-based bands that at one time featured future Badlands cohort Greg Chaisson. Martin also released a solo album in 2006, The Fool, featuring the guitar talents of Paul Gilbert and Michael Schenker and has also sung backing vocals for Judas Priest and The Scream and he appeared in the 1985 movie Thunder Alley, starring Leif Garrett, with his band Surgical Steel. Badlands, of course, featured the talents of ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee and was signed to Atlantic Records. Jeff played drums of the bands 2nd and eventual 3rd releases while also touring on with them on the “Voodoo Highway” tour. Jeff has some of the best rock n' roll stories, many of which could have been compared to Spinal Tap! So check out episode# 38 for some of those great stories and his career!

I think the most fascinating thing today is the unexpected sidebar into Ed Asner's Thunder Alley? You remember that show? No? No-one does. But Johnny Mac googles it mid show. The real topic was NBC's new sitcom about the car industry. Why?Speaking of NBC sitcoms, a look at Kenan.A survey found that Jimmy Carr got the most laughs per minute from UK audiences. A look at the entire list. And it's Matt Berry Sunday...and Vulture thinks Matt should go on twitch. If you like what I do, you can support the show at www.buymeacoffee.com/dailycomedynewsThe instagram is DailyComedyNews

ABOUT THE BOOK Former teen idol Leif Garrett bares his soul for the first time ever, revealing his deepest secrets about the extraordinary highs and devastating lows he has survived over the years. He was a hardworking child actor in the early 1970s, appearing on dozens of popular films and TV programs. Then he was offered a chance to make a record and “Leif Garrett, teen idol” was born. Millions of teenage girls all over the world covered their walls with his picture. His face adorned hundreds of international magazine covers as he became one of the biggest and most desired heartthrobs in history. There were jet-setting tours, TV specials, and hit records, along with an endless supply of beautiful women, alcohol, and ultimately, the drugs that sent this shooting star into the darkest depths of addiction. Idol Truth is a harrowing survivor’s story as well as a charmed tale filled with compelling pop culture characters—from Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields to John Belushi, Freddie Mercury, and many more. It’s the first time ever that Leif Garrett has come clean about his life, revealing all the details of his spectacular journey. ABOUT LEIF Leif Garrett burst onto the scene in 1966 at the early age of five, debuting as an actor in the quintessential period film, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Garrett starred in over sixty hit television shows, such as being the semi-regular on the critically acclaimed hit television shows, The Waltons and Family. But it was his portrayal of a pony express rider in the television special, Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion that garnered Garrett the honor of being inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. From then on he continued to do more TV and film including Walking Tall and the hit television series, Three for the Road. This family drama was Garrett’s launching pad for the recording phenomena that was to occur. Having achieved tremendous success as an actor, Garrett took on the music industry. He became a multi gold and platinum recording artist and one of the biggest teen idols of all time, gracing magazine covers all over the world. In 1977, Garrett released his self-titled debut album and climbed the music charts with his remakes of “Runaround Sue” (#13) and “Surfin’ USA” (#20). In 1978 he released his sophomore album entitled Feel The Need. The album quickly became a chart-topper with Leif’s biggest hit, “I Was Made For Dancin'." After releasing three more albums, Garrett decided to turn his attention to acting once again, co-starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s film classic, The Outsiders in 1983. He continued to choose other notable roles in the eighties in movies such as Thunder Alley and Shaker Run. In 1991, Garrett appeared with fellow former teen idol, David Cassidy, in the seventies spoof, Spirit of ’76. Audiences were amazed and impressed with Garrett’s comedic ability and talent. It was in 1998 when the music arena became reacquainted with Leif Garrett on VH1’s highly acclaimed Behind The Music series. The response from the viewing public was sensational and it has become one of the highest rated episodes of Behind The Music. Garrett’s well-documented bouts with substance abuse generated headlines in the next two decades. www.leifgarrett.net

In this special episode of The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by returning guestLloyd Keller as we take a long, hard look at the classic game of Carcassonne. Along the way we discuss the strategies and layers of the base game, ideal player count, nearly all of the expansions, and the Carcassonne spin off games of Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers, Carcassonne: The City, Carcassonne: The Discovery, Carcassonne: The Castle, New World: A Carcassonne Game and much, much more. As a bonus I also review the new GMT game of Thunder Alley, and the new Victory Point game, Villainous Vikings. News is also given of a special kickstarter that may be of interest to fans of Dominion. The Thunder Alley review can be found at the 2:25:00 mark of the episode, and the Villainous Vikings review can be found at the 2:51:00 mark of the episode.
