If ever there was a horror movie that made zero sense, it's this pile of…whatever this is. This week on The Blind Rage Podcast, it's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION a.k.a. THE RETURN OF THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, notorious for casting then unknowns Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey Despite heaps of completely incoherent dialogue, this installment begins similarly to other films in the franchise. We're introduced to our ensemble of main characters (this time, it's a group of high school kids on prom night). Of course, they have a wreck and find themselves stranded in the middle of Texan woodland. During their seemingly endless quest for help, they come face-to-face with various members of a new inbred family, which, interestingly enough, don't appear to be cannibals. As the film progresses, the subplot concerning members of an underground society similar to the illuminati, whose objective is to capture random people and terrify them to the point of reaching a spiritual and transcendent experience., is introduced I suppose writer/director Kim Henkel ceased to realize that such a concept could traumatize someone to the point of sheer madness, i.e. Sally at the end of the original. It wouldn't surprise me if Henkel cranked the script out during an acid trip, because I doubt anyone other than he could possibly understand his true intentions. That doesn't mean Tony and I aren't going to give it a try. Learn more about your ad choices. How has it taken us this long to cover one of the most influential films in horror history? On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're throwing it back to one of the very first final girls with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). The film that both introduced Leatherface to the world and invented the power tool as an instrument of psychological damage, this scary '70s story made a lasting impact on both the culture and hitchhiking crime statistics. But there's more to talk about than just that. Despite the torture porn connotations of the franchise at large, the original flick is pretty subtle — and it's absolutely stunning, too. Honored with many awards for his films and achievement in the horror genre, Tobe Hooper is truly one of the Masters of Horror (2005).Tobe Hooper was born in Austin, Texas, to Lois Belle (Crosby) and Norman William Ray Hooper, who owned a theater in San Angelo. He spent the 1960s as a college professor and documentary cameraman. In 1974, he organized a small cast that was made up of college teachers and students, and then he and Kim Henkel made The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), featuring the maniacal chainsaw-wielder Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen). This film changed the horror film industry and became an instant classic, remaining on many lists of top horror films of all time. Hooper based it upon the real-life killings of Ed Gein, a cannibalistic killer responsible for the grisly murders of several people in 1950s Wisconsin. Rex Reed said, "It's the scariest film I have ever seen." Leonard Maltin wrote, "While not nearly as gory as its title suggests, 'Massacre' is a genuinely terrifying film made even more unsettling by its twisted but undeniably hilarious black comedy." It is in the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and was officially selected at the Cannes Film Festival of 1975 for Directors Fortnight.JOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today! The last few weeks Top 5 discussions have included Dinner Scenes and Hitchhikers and understandably that's seen us talk about THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974), one of the most influential horror movies of all time. Director Tobe Hooper together with co-writer Kim Henkel establish fundamental and often repeated conventions of the slasher sub-genre such as the Final Girl trope, the connection of sex with death and physically imposing masked men chasing people wielding blunt instruments in this misunderstood and intense film classic.Much more subtle than that lurid title might suggest, with a restraint in the depiction of violence matched only by the excess of the deranged ideas at the centre of the film, Art Director Bob Burns's macabre production design is a grim highlight. Avoid TTCM if you don't want to listen to 35 minutes of women screaming, which at least one of the Dads didn't want to do.

On this edition of Parallax Views, it's a Halloween hangover episode where politics and horror movies collide! Martin Harris, author of Leatherface vs. Tricky Dick: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as Political Satire, joins me to examine filmmaker Tobe Hooper's 1974 cult classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in the context of the turbulent political scandal it was made in the midst of: Watergate and the fall of President Richard Milhouse Nixon. Believe it or not, Hooper himself made references to how his infamous film was influenced by the political climate of the 1970s. Much was going on when the film was being made. U.S. economic woes were increasing while gas shortages impacted the nation. The leftovers of the psychedelic 60s counterculture were wondering about in the aftermath of the Manson Family killings and Altamont. The Vietnam War was winding down but its effect on the American psyche was looming large. The rural/urban divide was growing. And Richard Nixon, with the help of his cronies like G. Gordon Liddy, plotted to break-in to the Democratic National Convention in what would become of the biggest scandal in American political history. Harris and I discuss all this and much more in this fascinating conversation that also delves into the parallels between Leatherface and Richard Nixon, the character of "The Old Man" (played by Jim Siedow) in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Richard Nixon, Irving Kristol's "The Nightmare of Watergate" and the irrationality of Watergate, the dark comedy of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a historical overview of the Watergate scandal and the way it was experienced by Americans at the time, Gerald Ford's comments about Watergate as "our long national nightmare", Hunter S. Thompson's commentaries on Watergate and his invocation of the horrific and grotesque when writing about it,  "Saturn in Retrograde" and the implications of the cosmic in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, satires of the Nixon era as it was happening, the infamous White House "Saturday Night Massacre" under Nixon, the valence of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's production company being called Vortex Inc., the circularity of both The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Watergate wherein the "horror folds in on itself", the chilling opening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the narration by John Larroquette, criminal discovery in Watergate and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the villains of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as conspirators engaged in cover-ups of crimes, the character of "The Hitchhiker" (played by Edwin Neal), the Leatherface mask and the Nixon mask, Leatherface's formality of dress (ie: tie and suit), tensions between "old ways" and "new ways" and tradition vs. youth in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Nixon and the Southern Strategy, Tobe Hooper's experimental film Eggshells and its relationship to the 1960s counterculture, the power of the Presidency and draconian measures in the Nixon era, the rise of astrology and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, political lies and the lie that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was "based on a true story", the popularity of astrology in times of uncertainty and Nixon's relationship with astrologer Jeane Dixon, political allegory vs. political satire, satire as a means to comment on real life matters in indirect ways, and much, more! The Watergate scandal was a horror show. What better way to satirize it than with a horror movie? The Texas Chain Saw Massacre written by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel premiered in October 1974, mere weeks after the resignation and pardon of Richard Nixon brought an uncertain end to the most corrupt and criminal presidency in American history. The film had been conceived, written, shot, edited, and produced precisely as Watergate was playing out, and those responsible for Chain Saw unhesitatingly spoke of the horrors of contemporary politics as having directly inspired the ones they created for the film. In his new book, Leatherface vs. Tricky Dick: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as Political Satire (Headpress, 2021), Martin Harris presents a fascinating minute-by-minute exploration of the many uncanny connections between The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Watergate, as well as other ways the film comments on contemporary politics via satire and (very) dark humor.  Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. After the success of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel caught the attention of Hollywood and landed themselves a three picture deal with Universal. But before they could begin work on any movies for the major studio, they had to fulfill an agreement that had been signed before the Universal contract. That agreement was with exploitation movie producer Mardi Rustam, who'd tapped Hooper for his killer croc movie EATEN ALIVE. In this episode, we'll trace the story behind the making of Hooper's sophomore effort, giving all the grimy details about its creation, its legacy, and how it affected the career of Tobe Hooper. In this episode, we discuss Renée's first starring role as Jenny in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994). We talk about Renée working with fellow Academy Award winner, fellow Texan, and fellow UT alum Matthew McConaughey. Additionally, we discuss why Jenny is such a strong character—both mentally and physically—as she faces a night from hell defending herself from Leatherface and Vilmer. The film was written and directed by Kim Henkel, creator of 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The explosion of the slasher genre in the 1980’s had just about every studio in Hollywood thirsty for the next great horror franchise. New Line Cinema, which was the studio responsible for the rise of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, decided to reinvent the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise with a third film in the series with plans to focus more around Leatherface than his cannabilistic family. The result was the 1990 film “Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” which starred future Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen. Then in 1995, Kim Henkel, one of the original writers in the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” returned to the franchise to pen the script for “The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which was the fourth film in the series. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellwegger long before they were Oscar darlings, the film introduced a bizarre twist that the human flesh feasting Sawyer clan were actually part of a secret cabal responsible for many of the ills that befell the world. In part three of our ongoing examination of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Rewind of the Living Dead will take a look at two sequels from the 1990s that were meant to reinvigorate the series with “Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III’ and the fourth film later retitled “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation”…

When A Stranger Calls (1979) Directed by Fred Walton and taking a nod through urban legend about a babysitter and the man upstairs.  The film's opening 20 minutes is considered one of the scariest ever filmed.  So much so that Wes Craven would copy this for the successful Scream series. The film stars Carol Kane, Charles Durning, and Colleen Dewhurst. The film was remade in 2006 and a sequel called When A Stranger Calls Back in 1993 as a television film which is considered one of the best sequels of a horror film.  Both are now repackaged together in a special blu-ray box set.    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)   Directed by Tobe Hopper and written by Hopper and Kim Henkel.  The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead.   The film stars Marilyn Burns, Paul A Partain, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow and Gunnar Hansen. Upon its initial release in 1974, the film was banned in several countries.  The film has now been re-assessed and considered a classic within the horror genre.  The film has spawned several sequels and plenty of imitators.    Opening Credits; Introduction – Rose and Thorn of the Week (1.32); Story Geeks (3.48); Forming the Plot (8.41); Film Trailer (11.17); Lights, Camera, Action (12.54);Forming The Plot (1:05.20); DAB Book Release (1:06.30); Trailer (Take 2) (1:08.52); Lights, Camera, Action (Take 2) (1:09.57); Epilogue 1:58.42); End Credits (2:12.42); Closing Credits (2:13.37)   Opening Credits – thanking BenSounds for our fantastic Opening Credits.   Closing Credits – Relax, Take It Easy – MIKA taken from the album Life in a Cartoon Motion copyright 2007 Casablanca Records.   All rights reserved.   All songs available through Amazon Music.

Two years after the success of 1974’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, director Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel joined forces for a follow-up movie 'EATEN ALIVE'. Once again, they searched for inspiration in annals of true crime history, and they found it in Joe Ball. Following the repeal of prohibition, Joe Ball opened up a tavern outside of Elmendorf, Texas and stocked a pit in the back with live alligators to put on gruesome shows for his customers. Soon after, the pretty young barmaids working at his tavern began to disappear. This is Based on a True Crime. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. B-movies have been around for years, from the Universal horror films to the 1950's science fiction thrillers. In the 1960's the grindhouse and exploitation flicks continued the trend but with more graphic content including blood and nudity. Films like Blood Feast, Night of the Living Dead, The Defilers, Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, among others gained cult status. Then the 1970's drive-in flicks carried the torch. Films like I Drink Your Blood, Foxy Brown, and The Big Bird Cage were a handful, and some even became more than cult films ... they became classics. One such film was the 1974 movie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With its shocking title, its promised exploitation, and its "based on a true story" claim, the film immediately gained notoriety. Yet the tight and unsettling story by co-writers Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper, the brilliant directing by Hooper, and the top notch acting by (at the time) unknowns, let the film catch on and today it is considered not just a drive-in horror film but an all time classic, no matter the genre. With the passing of star Gunnar Hansen, in tribute, Dark Discussions has decided to do an episode on this groundbreaking film that brought the grindhouse through the "front door" and eventually into the mainstream. Last year the lead actress, Marilyn Burns, also passed away. The film happens to be 41 years old now, and your co-hosts reflect on its legacy, what it meant to horror (and exploitation) cinema, and their personal feelings on what some say may be the greatest horror film ever made. In this episode we welcome Terri McMinn from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. She was hung up for dead in the movie and on the famous movie poster. We chat about her experience on the set, what she has been up to lately, and where she will be appearing in the future.  Terri on IMDB Born in Houston, Texas. After graduating from high school, Teri studied and worked at The Dallas Theatre Center, in Dallas, Texas. Moving to Austin, Texas, in 1971, the young actress attended the University of Texas and St. Edwards University. It was in Austin, where she was discovered by director Tobe Hooper and producer Kim Henkel, after seeing an article about her in the local newspaper. After auditioning, Teri was chosen for the part by Hooper and Henkel, and offered her the role of "Pam" in their film project, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). It was a hot, grueling shoot, fraught with all the wrinkles low budget films incur, twice shutting down filming entirely. Simultaneously, Teri worked in local theater. After the film's 1974 release, she studied acting in Los Angeles and New York. Doors opened as a leg and foot model in commercials and print work, while continuing stage work.

My sculpture is a result of a physical process of spontaneous digging and marking in clay with my hands, a blind act of faith. As I work, I create the negative void that is ever present in this life full of ambiguity. Removing my hands, I fill the dark, cold space with materials. Then painstakingly peel away the soft layers of clay on the outside until the solid form is exposed -- like an excavation. The result is an expressive object like a fossil manifestation of the complexity of my desires, fears and expectations. The layers of clay are recycled over and over again as a foundation for more digging and building more sculpture. When my will tries to control the negative space, the outcome takes the form of fierce substances. But when I push with spontaneous marks of bold confidence, a wonderful evolution of probity and consciousness appears. The pinhole photographs are a documentation of the moment of discovering the sculptures in the Arizona landscape. - Kim Henkel

THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD is an unsettling brew of dark comedy, suspense and terror, adapted from real-life journals kept in the early 1970's by Dale S. Rogers while living in Sublime - a town in a sparsely populated part of Texas about 100 miles north of where the movie was lensed. Mr. Rogers lived with his invalid wife, Jean, and hired hand, Mario, in a quaint ranch house on a plantation that can be traced back through at least five generations of his family. It was in this region, in the mid 1800's, that the legend of the wild man was born - a story many believe to be the first documented sightings of a Sasquatch-like being in South Texas. This vintage horror tale debunks history books to tell the veracious, harrowing story of a rural community whose residents were terrified for years by a mysterious creature inhabiting the nearby woods The Wild Man of the Navidad is a 2008 much-praised horror film picked up by IFC Films shortly after its world premiere at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, and is slated to debut on the Independent Film Channel's Festival Direct platform February 11, 2009. The film is a throwback to drive-in Sasquatch classics of the 1970's like The Legend of Boggy Creek, and is unique in its extremely accurate recreation of their specific vintage style, pacing and feel -- from the vivid, real-life characters all the way down to the period production design and hometown music. The film was co-produced by Kim Henkel, co-writer of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with Tobe Hooper in 1974, and was written, directed and edited by two of Mr. Henkel's screenwriting/production students at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, Justin Meeks and Duane Graves. Join us on Nite Callers tonight as we welcome Justin and Duane to share with us how they brought history and legend to the big screen. http://ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?filmId=1376
