KISS is one of the most legendary bands in the history of rock n roll. From their iconic makeup to their bombastic stage shows to the marketing and licensing of every product under the sun, KISS has been a part of popular culture for half a century. The self-titled debut album, KISS, didn't grab everyone's attention out of the gate, however. While they had some killer riffs supplied by original guitarist Ace Frehley, some funky bass from Gene Simmons, swinging drumming from Peter Criss and superstar vocals from Paul Stanley, the band were still forming their sound and identity. In fact, the sales of the album were so slow that Casablanca Records chief Neil Bogart cajoled the band into recording a 50s cover, Kissin Time, which he thought would help boost sales as a single. Even though Kissin Time was added to every copy of KISS after the first 100,000 or so, it didn't help generate more sales. But their reputation as a great live band had KISS winning fans around the nation. And while KISS wouldn't capture that live sound until ALIVE! a couple of years later, this album has some great tracks which are still KISS classics today like Deuce, Strutter, Cold Gin and Black Diamond. We give it our usual track x track evaluation and throw in lots of KISS tidbits. As a special bonus, we have included a clip from Space Ace himself, Ace Frehley. As Ace recently spoke with Paul Stephenson of VRP Rocks (a good friend of Ugly American Werewolf in London), Paul asked Ace a question from The Wolf about the timing of his new solo release 10,000 Volts and how it's coming out almost 50 years to the day from the release of KISS. Ace may not answer the question we asked but it's amazing that Paul asked if for us and the audio is included somewhere in the episode - you'll have to listen to hear from Ace!! This week we look back to a time when the music industry was, mostly, run through a handful of record labels. With big money to be made, record companies such as Capitol, Epic, Columbia, and Atlantic wielded a lot of power. Buyouts were happening such as in the case of Polygram acquiring Casablanca Records which would result in a very in-flux KISS winding up on Mercury Records. Smaller labels, while limited financially, were successful at times due to scouting new talent and breaking it. This circumstance would lead labels such as Elektra, Metal Blade, and Megaforce to be on the ground floor of some legendary careers and genres. In this discussion, we discuss all of these record labels, many of the notable artists that inhabited their rosters, how they stacked up in the rock world, and much more. The era we're focusing on this time is 1980-1984.  Was the rule and oversight of the early 80's music industry a good thing? Is today's wide open musical climate a better thing for artists? Part 1 of 2 Evan "Kidd" Bogart seems like he would have had an easy ride to the top. He was born into music industry success — the son of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart and Kiss manager Joyce Bogart Trabulus. And today has a Grammy (for Beyonce's "Halo") and a long list of hit songs (see below), and now a movie — Spinning Gold — which he made with his brothers, about his father. In between is where it gets interesting. He tried to break through as a rapper in the 90s. When that didn't work, he started in the music business and became known as the guy who discovered Eminem and didn't get credit for it (you'll hear a bit of that story in our episode). Evan started again, only to have it fall apart and have to move home at 26, and start again. You'll have to listen to our interview to find out how it all turned around for him, and the lessons he learned from the ups and downs. But it should be obvious that never giving up is core for Evan, and that his love and passion for music has driven him through life's challenges. Make sure you come back next week for part 2 where we talk about the incredible movie Spinning Gold, on which Evan is executive producer, music supervisor, and composer. Check it out at https://www.spinninggold.movie Meanwhile, here's just a partial list of the artists Evan has contributed to: Eminem Maroon 5 One Republic Rhianna Styles of Beyond Planet Asia Jason Derulo Sean Kingston Enrique Iglesias Jennifer Lopez Lizzo Learn more about your ad choices. The musical archaeologists of Modern Musicology are on an expedition to uncover albums that are celebrating 45th Anniversaries -- The Albums of 1978! It was a great year with amazing game-changing debuts from Prince, Van Halen, The Police, The Cars, Kate Bush, Generation X, Devo, and many more. It was a big year for Disco and Funk. Two metal and hard rock institutions (Rainbow and Black Sabbath) both faced crossroads in their career. It was a huge year for Casablanca Records, with major releases from KISS, Donna Summer, Parliament, The Village People, and others (anyone remember Teri DeSario??). Plus, we cover amazing releases by The Ramones, The Clash, XTC, Heart, Blondie, and many more. And we just couldn't let 1978 go by without dropping the needle on that ill-fated Sgt Pepper film and soundtrack!  What are your memories of 1978? Join us as Rudy and I reflect on how we got married at 21 and have survived 43 years of marriage! One of the things we talked about before was the influence that our family and friends had on our relationship! We didn't realize it then but the people who know you best can see the qualities each of you have that either mesh or don't. Ours wasn't an arranged marriage per se, some of the people who were closest to us saw things  that they thought would make us a good match. What can also happen is that as a couple grows closer, time with friends is reduced. As we spent time together we found that there were experiences in each of our lives that the other hadn't experienced. When you're merging lifestyles you have to figure out what part of you are you willing to sacrifice or expand to accommodate the other person.  Ideally, in the dynamics of a relationship that you're building together, you get to know someone and then respond to what you know. This includes observing and then  responding to what you observe. Rudy shares a story about giving Robin a radio for her office (back in the day of course!) so she could listen to her favorite soap opera which at the time was "All My Children".  Last year, after he completed treatment for cancer, their kids banded together and planned a family trip to Disney World for one of Rudy's favorite events, to celebrate that milestone.  Know what people like and then act on it. You'll also be setting an example for your kids. Rudy says that "Observe and be quiet long enough to understand what that person likes. Then incorporate that into what you're going to do to communicate your love and affection for them.As our relationship we grew, other relationships took a back seat for a while and some people didn't like that. It wasn't so much that they didn't like one of us for the other' they thought we were two young for such a serious commitment. We later learned that at our wedding some people bet that we wouldn't last three years! There may have been some truth to that when you consider who and what you're really called to be. Rudy had a dream to be a singing superstar, and encountered and worked with names you know - Lionel Richie (when he was with the Commodores), Michael Jackson, Casablanca Records, and more. Robin envisioned living in Malibu in a white mansion by the ocean. In this podcast, they dissect letting go of a dream in THAT business, and realizing that people have to have a purpose that involves love, affection, and caring, not celebration and worship. Even though Rudy had a burning desire to pursue a career in music, there are things that you give up of yourself as you take on new roles. As we reflect (we call it therapy while you listen :), we realize the value of taking that time for our relationship. We figured out what we had in common and navigated our way.  We know that had we embarked on a music trajectory at that time, we probably would not have stayed together and would not have had the family that we have. We are where we're supposed to be.Thank you so much for spending time with us today! We hope you enjoyed our conversation, related to something we said, and laughed along the way. Well, Erik listens a lot as Steve saw a lot this week including a religious documentary (In Viaggio: The Travels of Pope Francis), Bruce Willis in a virtual Possessor remake (Assassin), Thomas Haden Church looking for aliens (Acidman) and horror films based around sound (The Unheard) and as little sound as possible (Enys Men). Steve also tackles the bizarre Casablanca Records biopic (Spinning Gold) and the latest bizarro from Quentin Dupieux (Smoking Causes Coughing) while Erik did double duty on Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston (Murder Mystery 2). Two films from Sundance are revisited including a mother's tale of gentrification (A Thousand of One) and a marvelously fresh romcom not to be missed on Hulu (Rye Lane). “My father's life was a very visible one,” says writer/director Timothy Scott Bogart, son of 1970s record producer Neil Bogart, the co-founder of Casablanca Records. “That was my playground. I grew up, literally backstage at these concerts.” Neil Bogart signed such artists as Donna Summer, George Clinton, KISS, the Isley Brothers, the Village People, and Gladys Knight. “The storytelling I saw being done as a child was infectious. Everything that they did was creating something beyond just the music. I just fell in love with it.” At the age of 12, Timothy's father died. Perhaps looking for a creative outlet, he actually wrote his first screenplay at this young age. “It was terrible,” he jokes, “but it was 120 pages, it actually had a beginning, middle, and end. I think all of it was an escape. I got lost in the fantasy and loved making little movies and writing little stories.” Timothy credits “being exposed to that extraordinary visual world [his father] created” as the foundation for what led to his career as a Producer, Screenwriter, and Director. “Almost everything I did had somebody struggling with loss,” he says in hindsight. I kept doing stories about other things, but ultimately, they were about children struggling with the loss of a parent.” Only a year or two after the death of his father, Timothy recalls people “banging on the door trying to get the rights” to his father's life story. The family wasn't ready to share this information. They turned down Broadway musicians, television shows, and movies. “As I started looking at this as being something I wanted to do with my life, I took on the mantle of being responsible of being the guy saying ‘No.' Part of that was, I didn't know what it was.” After decades of pondering what the story could be and how it might be best represented, Timothy decided to take on the responsibility himself, as the writer and director of Spinning Gold, the story of Neil Bogart. Founded by Neil Bogart and Cecil Holmes, the label launched the careers of KISS, The Village People, Donna Summer, Parliament and so many more…as well as pumping out the soundtrack of the disco era. And now a new movie that tells the story of those heady days, Spinning Gold, is hitting theaters this Friday and we talked to stars Jay Pharoah and Jeremy Jordan this morning about it…which then evolved into talk about the “good old days” of radio!

Spring is upon us. The flowers are blooming, the lawn needs cutting and your allergies are depriving you of oxygen. That's why we took a look at the season's entertainment options so you'll have something to watch while you stay indoors away from the pollen. First we've got the fantasy adventure "Dungeons and Dragon: Honor Among Thieves" which stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Hugh Grant. It's based on the role-playing game, but is it fun? We'll let you know. Then there's "Moving On" starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two old friends who reconnect at a funeral and decide to get revenge on the widower who messed with them decades before. And for real film buffs there's the documentary "Kubrick by Kubrick" which features a treasure trove of unearthed interview recordings from the master himself. Plus there's "Spinning Gold" which is a musical journey of Neil Bogart and how his Casablanca Records created the greatest soundtrack of our lives. For Streaming buffs we have "The Night Agent" which is a new Netflix series about low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland, who works in the basement of the White House manning a phone that never rings--until the night it does--propelling him into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the Oval Office. And we've got "The Lost King" which is based on the true story about an amateur historian who defied the stodgy academic establishment in her efforts to find King Richard III's remains, which were lost for over 500 years. And there's even more, so take another dose of Benadryl and listen in!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4137244/advertisement

It's a colorful and lively edition of #BTLRadioShow thanks to writer/director MOSTAFA KESHVARI who joins us live talking about his new film COLORBLIND. Plus, writer/director TIM BOGART dives into the making of what quickly became one of my fave films of the year, SPINNING GOLD! Joining us live at the top of the show is writer/director MOSTAFA KESHVARI discussing his new film, the exquisite and powerful COLORBLIND. The story of a colorblind mother and son facing racial and social injustices, COLORBLIND speaks to us literally, figuratively, and metaphorically. A fascinating aspect of the production is that the film was developed by color scientists to accurately display colorblindness and metaphorically address racism. Take a listen as Mostafa discusses the science and the cinematic art that came together for COLORBLIND. And then, get ready, because you'll hear my prerecorded exclusive interview with writer/director TIM BOGART talking about his new film opening on Friday – SPINNING GOLD. One of my fave films of the year, this is the story of legendary music producer and founder of Casablanca Records, Neil Bogart. For all the youngsters out there, this is the man who created and shepherded some of music's greatest legends – Donna Summer, KISS, Gladys Knight, George Clinton, The Isley Brothers, just to name a few. Making Tim uniquely qualified to tell this story is that he is Neil's son. Visually exciting and period perfect in hair, make-up and costuming covering several decades, one of the real joys of SPINNING GOLD is the story structure as the film is written as if Neil Bogart himself was telling his life story. As many already know, and as you will see in the film and hear Tim talk about, Neil Bogart was the consummate showman and storyteller which makes this approach to the film pitch perfect. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Take a minute to think about Joan Jett.  More than one song.  More than just "I Love Rock and Roll", as great as that radio song is.  She's called “The Queen of Rock ‘n' Roll” and “The Godmother of Punk.”   Let's think about the rock and roll in her catalog and the influences she ultimately passed along.  In the podcast, we talk about her career and how - somehow - she's may even be a bit undervalued as one of the rock and roll greats. Jett's self-titled solo debut was released in Europe in 1980. In the US,  the is that after the album was rejected by 23 major labels, so Jett and and manager Kenny Laguna formed Blackheart Records and released it independently -  started with Laguna's daughter's college savings -  sometimes selling the albums out of the trunk of Laguna's car after a show.  They eventually made a deal with Casablanca Records head Neil Bogart, and he signed Jett to his new label, Boardwalk Records and re-released the Joan Jett album as Bad Reputation.  That statement and that song - what Joan Jett sang about - "I don't give a damn about…" was what she became.  That's the image she made real.   It is her brand.  It cements her place as an integral part of the melding of punk rock and rock and roll.   SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforward.wordpress.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com FACEBOOK: @rockpopandroll INSTAGRAM: @rockpopandroll TWITTER: @rockpoprollpod
