Voice Of GO(r)D is very happy to bring you Marilyn Burns, Tony Olienick's lawyer, and Danielle Slettede, one of his oldest friends and longest serving member of the men's support team. Marilyn tells us about her history in Alberta, including her roles in politics, as she is one of the founding members of Alberta WildRose, her legal career, and how she came to represent Tony in her first ever criminal case. Marilyn and Danielle provide insight from having been in the courtroom, especially Danielle, as she has been there since day one. Danielle has done a great deal of the legal legwork, taking on a second full time unpaid job in the filing and studying of tens of thousands of documents, and being in court for pre-trial and trial almost every single day. They tell us about Justice Labrenz and the details around the sentencing, why that sentencing was ‘unjust' and did not follow precedent, and I discuss many of the things they can't. We also get into the ‘envelope' situation, what that means going forward, and the practicalities of appeals versus riding out to parole. There will be more written commentary on the sentencing in time, please stay tuned. Tony and Chris have recently been transferred to the Drumheller Institution, a medium and low security detention facility in Alberta. As of publication time, they have yet to be issued prisoner numbers nor protocols for sending them letters. As soon as that info is made available, it will be shared here on Substack and over on my Twitter account, as well as the men's respective FB supporter pages. The Men still have outstanding legal bills, the envelope situation has yet to play out, and fundraising is ongoing. "Chainsaw Alumni" commentary featuring stars Bill Moseley, Gunnar Hansen, Marilyn Burns and John Dugan
How has it taken us this long to cover one of the most influential films in horror history? On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're throwing it back to one of the very first final girls with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). The film that both introduced Leatherface to the world and invented the power tool as an instrument of psychological damage, this scary '70s story made a lasting impact on both the culture and hitchhiking crime statistics. But there's more to talk about than just that. Despite the torture porn connotations of the franchise at large, the original flick is pretty subtle — and it's absolutely stunning, too. You might be familiar with food co-ops or housing co-ops. But how about a laundry co-op? A group of community members in the Woodhill neighborhood of Cleveland are starting just that. Marilyn Burns and Leah Ross are part of a group of residents who, through surveys and outreach, learned that a majority of their neighbors do not have access to a nearby washer or dryer. This may seem like a small thing, but it’s such a fundamental and basic component of human dignity. Being able to show up at school or a job with clean clothes—especially during this time of COVID when everyone is more attuned to hygiene concerns—should be something everyone’s able to do. Accordingly, Burns and Ross are collaborating with neighbors to get a cooperative laundromat started. In this interview, hosted by Strong Towns Program Director Rachel Quednau, Burns and Ross get into what it’s like to start a neighborhood-based effort like this one. They talk about all the important steps along the way, including gathering people together, doing your research, finding funding, and building support for the effort—always rooted in a dedication to listening to neighbors’ needs rather than dictating an outcome. It’s community engagement in the truest sense, from the bottom-up. It seems like there is a debate about everything in how we teach math. One of those debates is whether or not kids should do paper-pencil math or mental math. If you’ve been around awhile you can probably guess where I land on this debate….right in the middle, kids need both. In the book Math: Facing an American Phobia by Marilyn Burns she pretty much sums up my thoughts on pages 10-11. Go over to buildmathminds.com/85 to get the link to purchase the book.

This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan put on their codpieces and fret over the innocence of teenage girls around David Bowie. Don't get us wrong, we love this movie, but why does this charming children's tale have a character named after the part of the anatomy responsible for transporting sperm? And why do so many sequences resemble sperm? And if all of these things are symbols for sperm, what does the Bog of Eternal Stench represent? We shudder to think… Labyrinth (1986) d. Jim Henson w. "I did not enjoy watching this." This week, the Brides gnaw on some homemade headcheese and get delirious with heat stroke as we discuss one of cinema's sweatiest films: Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Along the way, we touch on the truly horrific conditions of the shoot, how one of the best shots in horror almost didn't make the cut, and Hooper sincerely trying to get this movie rated PG by the MPAA. (No joke.) We also go into detail on one of the inspirations for the film, notorious Wisconsin grave robber Ed Gein. We wrap things up with palate cleansers, and Lindsay's cat nearly ruins everything. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. 1974. Directed by Tobe Hooper. When A Stranger Calls (1979) Directed by Fred Walton and taking a nod through urban legend about a babysitter and the man upstairs. The film's opening 20 minutes is considered one of the scariest ever filmed. So much so that Wes Craven would copy this for the successful Scream series. The film stars Carol Kane, Charles Durning, and Colleen Dewhurst. The film was remade in 2006 and a sequel called When A Stranger Calls Back in 1993 as a television film which is considered one of the best sequels of a horror film. Both are now repackaged together in a special blu-ray box set. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Directed by Tobe Hopper and written by Hopper and Kim Henkel. The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. Here's my review of the 1974 film 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'. Directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Marilyn Burns and Gunnar Hansen, this film receives a 6.4 rating on my 'Horror Dude' scale. CHECK IT OUT!
And as Halloween draws to a close (a couple of weeks ago) we at Flix bid a joyous farewell to films designed to scare the bejesus out of you for another year. To commemorate the end of the season, I decided to go out with a bang and watch a film described by many as the scariest of all time. • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a 1974 film co-written and directed by Tobe Hooper. It follows the adventures of a quintet of young people as they venture off the beaten path in rural Texas, and meet some of the locals. But will the locals be happy and welcoming, or nasty and murdery? The answer may surprise you. • It’s held up as a classic by critics and audiences alike, but is it any good? I mean, it’s from ages ago, so probably sucky, right? Not a patch on the remakes? Right? Guys? • To help me decide, I enlisted the help of someone who’s just as excited to be rid of Halloween, Tiffany B, to chat about concern for Marilyn Burns, the downsides of shooting for 30 hours straight and being shocked at outstanding old man makeup. • There's a spoiler-free section (even though the film came out over 40 years ago), followed by a spoiler-filled, so if you've seen the film or not, there's something for you to listen to! • Cheers!

It's weird to think of a movie called The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being considered a classic piece of American cinema. The title prepares you for a sleazy bloodbath, but what it delivers is stunning cinematography, a nauseatingly effective score, nuanced relationships and character traits (I sort of love Franklin...), an emotionally complex villain and some very dark commentary on consumerism in America. Most importantly of all, it features an incredibly powerful performance by Marilyn Burns as my absolute favorite final girl, Sally. Get in touch! You know the feeling. I’ll just watch one episode. I’ll just stay for an hour. I’ll only keep the job for a year. And then an hour, a day, a year goes by — two years, three years — and you’re still doing the same thing. You like what you’re doing. You’re happy. You’re staying. That’s what happened to Marilyn Burns. When she moved into Cleveland public housing, she thought it was temporary. Just a chance to get back on her feet. That was 12 years ago. Today, she’s still there — and happy.
Sam and Rob emerge from a terrifying, tense, body-horror blood-bath into something completely diff—oh. Still, it's something a whole lot better than last week! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. B-movies have been around for years, from the Universal horror films to the 1950's science fiction thrillers. In the 1960's the grindhouse and exploitation flicks continued the trend but with more graphic content including blood and nudity. Films like Blood Feast, Night of the Living Dead, The Defilers, Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, among others gained cult status. Then the 1970's drive-in flicks carried the torch. Films like I Drink Your Blood, Foxy Brown, and The Big Bird Cage were a handful, and some even became more than cult films ... they became classics. One such film was the 1974 movie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With its shocking title, its promised exploitation, and its "based on a true story" claim, the film immediately gained notoriety. Yet the tight and unsettling story by co-writers Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper, the brilliant directing by Hooper, and the top notch acting by (at the time) unknowns, let the film catch on and today it is considered not just a drive-in horror film but an all time classic, no matter the genre. With the passing of star Gunnar Hansen, in tribute, Dark Discussions has decided to do an episode on this groundbreaking film that brought the grindhouse through the "front door" and eventually into the mainstream. Last year the lead actress, Marilyn Burns, also passed away. The film happens to be 41 years old now, and your co-hosts reflect on its legacy, what it meant to horror (and exploitation) cinema, and their personal feelings on what some say may be the greatest horror film ever made. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Welcome to the 150th episode of Dark Discussions ... well, at least the first part. Though we have a discussion of one of the best genre films in sometime, prior to the talk, we discussed the various things that have gone on these past couple of weeks and talk about them. Things that are brought up in conversation books: Jonathan Kellerman's The Murder Book, John Sandford's Rules of Prey, and Stephen King's Doctor Sleep. Mike and Abe give their review of Guardians of the Galaxy. Films including Lucy, Hercules, The Sacrament, Lake Placid, Burnt Offerings, and Sharknado 2 are spoken of. Television programming including The Strain and The Leftovers are brought up. The manga, King's Game, is given some airtime. And (at the time), upcoming films Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Into the Storm are brought up, including our thoughts. But also the passing of three important people in the genre occurred: Marilyn Burns, star of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, makeup man Dick Smith, and author/podcaster Lawrence Santoro. Dark Discussions speaks fondly of the three and we wrap up this episode as we get ready for Part 2 of episode 150 where we discuss ... check back in a few days. Marilyn Burns was an actress living in Texas when she landed the role of Sally in the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. After making that film she went on to appear in Helter Skelter, Eaten Alive and Future-Kill. In 2012, one of the Days Of The Dead Conventions featured a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reunion. Marilyn was one of the guest at that show and she was nice enough to sit down with me so I could ask her a few questions about her career and her memories of make the cult classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sit in with me as I talk with Marilyn Burns.
A while ago I went to a School Site Council meeting at the school my daughter attends. At that meeting all the parents participated in a first grade math lesson based on the teaching methods of Marilyn Burns. The parents were read a story and then had to solve a problem based on the information in the story. We were seated at tables and each table became its own work group. Each group addressed the solution in its own way. The experience taught us all on many different levels. It was comforting as a parent to see the gentle, caring method that was being used with our children. After experiencing this (three cheers to the school staff for presenting it) I was eager to chat with Marilyn to learn what the mind that created this method was thinking about education today. This interview was that encounter. Marilyn Burns- How did you solve that?
