Episode 426: Billboard Modern Rock Tracks - One Hit Wonders

On today's edition of the cast we talk about the plethora of one hit wonders that graced the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts over the years, and talk about how their contributions shaped the future of the chart to come. We discuss such artists like Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, Butthole Surfers, Eagle Eye Cherry, Semisonic, Eve 6, Marcy Playground, and a whole lot more and how their one fleeting moment in the sun made for some of the most memorable and catchy tunes of the late 90's. One hit wonders aren't necessarily a bad thing, but for some artists it makes it hard to live up to the success and expectations from their prior hits. I also play a song from Boston's own The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and their massive 1997 breakout hit, "The Impression That I Get".

Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, an institution that also nurtured artists like Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, and Edie Brickell. She furthered her studies with scholarships to Kansas University and Bishop College in Dallas but ultimately chose to learn through experience, joining a local band led by jazz guitarist Zachary Breaux and embarking on tours across Texas and Louisiana. In the early 1980s, St. Victor relocated to New York City, where she joined Roy Ayers' touring band, Ubiquity. She also toured with Freddie Jackson and Glenn Jones and became a sought-after session vocalist, collaborating with artists like Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Audrey Wheeler, Brenda White King, Tawatha Agee, and Curtis King. Her versatility and distinctive voice made her a prominent figure in the New York music scene.St. Victor, the lead singer of The Family Stand, a trio formed in the late 1980s with Peter Lord Moreland and Vernon Jeffrey Smith, achieved international success. Over three thousand years ago, yogis knew what scientists are discovering today: The mind has the power to destroy us or to propel us to greater peace, vitality, and freedom.  Yet yoga's profound teachings on the mind and consciousness are often overlooked in contemporary practices, which tend to focus primarily on physical postures and breathwork. Today, my guest, Reema Dutta, will share these timeless teachings with us, emphasizing the practices and principles we can adopt to enhance our lives. Reema Datta is the founder of the Yogi's Way, a holistic method that integrates movement, breathing, and consciousness practices with a focus on emotional well-being. She is certified to teach Ashtanga yoga and Tibetan heart yoga and is an Ayurvedic therapist. Since 2002, she has taught yoga training and retreats in over twenty countries across five continents. Her students include Sting, Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, Zainab Salbi, Sujatha Baliga, and thousands of other practitioners globally. In this interview, Reema offers lessons and practices rooted in yogic wisdom, cutting-edge science, and the realities of modern life. These can empower us to break free from our minds' destructive tendencies and experience lasting peace.

The trio Heavy MakeUp uses voice, synths, drum machines, and brass to improvise songs on the spot. Together, the band is singer and songwriter Edie Brickell and brass & electronic musicians CJ Camerieri and Trever Hagen, who have created music as side-people, songwriters, and producers. They bring all of those skills to bear and play, creating songs as a collective, somehow "beautifully constructing metaphorical stories with concrete sections", in the moment, (Camerieri, in a Relix interview). They freely and enthusiastically make up new songs, and play music from their album Here It Comes, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik

Barry and Abigail discuss Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and sample The Brangus, Bull Ring, Sour Patch Kegs - Watermelon Sour, and Brambles BlackBerry Hazy IPA from Daft Cow Brewery in Alachua, Florida. Barry first heard Flight of the Cosmic Hippo on an episode in the third season of Northern Exposure called Jules et Joel. Barry stunned Abigail with the information that Steve Martin is a GRAMMY-winning banjo player for his album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. He has two albums with Edie Brickell, Love Has Come for You and So Familiar. Abigail heard We Three Kings in Star of the County Down. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones have a Christmas album called Jingle All the Way, but, unfortunately, We Three Kings does not appear on it. Many thanks to Scott Brown, owner and brewer (and professional glass-washer!) of Daft Cow Brewery, for sitting down with us to chat about the history of the brewery and the San Felasco Tech City where it resides. Up next… Andy Grammer by Andy Grammer Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic! Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 851 with guitar player, Kenny Withrow from Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. This show was originally released on 10/24/19. Below are my original notes from the episode. Hello friends! Guitar player, Kenny Withrow from Edie Brickell & New Bohemians is my guest for episode 851! New Bohemians are back together, making new music and they've been on the road and playing festivals this summer. Their latest album, the adventurous and gorgeous, ROCKET is available wherever you stream and download your jams. They've actually been in the studio recording a new album that should be out in 2020. The New Bohemians will be doing an instrumental set at "Day Of The Dead Head" in Austin on Saturday, November 2nd. Go to ebnewbos.com for all of your Edie Brickell & New Bohemians music, tour dates, videos and more. Kenny and I sat down at Sound Check here in Austin and had a great conversation about the unusual ascension of New Bohemians, his guitar style, making ROCKET, getting to play with Bob Weir and much more. I had a great time getting to know Kenny. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1  Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie

The Lilith Fair 40 reaches the halfway mark -- what better time to confront the contribution of festival founder Sarah McLachlan, along with Macy Gray, Dionne Farris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Dido? We also remember childhood soundtracks, acknowledge "listen boo-boo" energy, blank on Shiri Appleby's name (sorry, lady!), spread German mustard on car singing, and play hacky-sack at the center of the Lilith/WB Venn. Help us separate love and Lilithosity in our Top 20 episode! Our intro is by Laura Barger and Jack Baldelli, and our outro is by I'm With Her.
