This special episode dives into 'Crooked Kingdom,' with hosts Nina and Anya celebrating Anya's birthday by dissecting the book's fast-paced plot, intricate character developments, and the profound themes of personal growth, trauma, and found family. The discussion highlights Kaz's brilliance, Inej's journey, the dynamics within the crew including Jesper, Wylan, and Kuwei, and the deep emotional ties connecting the characters. The analysis extends to the series finale, focusing on character farewells, Nina's new abilities, and Kaz's development. We critically evaluate the book's romance and plot twists, especially the impact of Matthias's death, while expressing hopes for future narratives and heists that might reunite the characters. We tease the next episode's topic, 'The Serpent and the Wings of Night' by Carissa Broadbent.

We discuss Wesper, the relationship between Wylan and Jesper. We answer such questions as: How does their pre-season two history change the dynamic of the relationship between them? Was the Six of Crows duology actually meant to be read ship by ship? And of course: Who would be the best third corner of a Wesper love triangle – Kuwei, Tolya, or JJ?Our next episode will probably cover assorted topics from season two (including amplifiers, for sure, we will get to amplifiers, we really need to talk about amplifiers in season two). If there's anything you want to hear us cover (other than amplifiers, which, again, we will be discussing) shoot us an email at crowclubpod@gmail.com! (And actually, feel free to email if you want to hear about amplifiers. We really need to talk about amplifiers.)Spoilers for the Shadow and Bone trilogy, both seasons of Netflix's Shadow and Bone show, and the Six of Crows duology.
Apologies for the delay (and the audio feedback in our fun segment), but we are REALLY getting into some juicy moments from Six of Crows as we discuss chapters 7-9. Look forward to our first LIVE EPISODE recording at LeakyCon Chicago later this summer! Matthias is fueled by revenge, a misplaced sense of justice, and repression What's so hard to understand about this: Kaz has a good reason for EVERYTHING he does There's a good reason the chapters focus on one character but from another character's perspective (cough… Jesper and Wylan… cough) It takes more than just big muscles to whoops someone's ass Fun Segment: Set the Scene, “Bluey” edition! In this interview we are so blessed and beyond excited to present this conversation with global Art Superstar Wyland! An icon on the landscape of mural painting, sculpture, oceanic conservation, and more, we are honored to release this rare in person long form talk with this true legend. He's epitomized the look and tone of underwater wildlife depiction in contemporary art, been a major driver for oceanic wellness and conservation, and as it turns out has had a blast doing it. Rarely do we in life encounter a person who radiates such unity of thought and action, who's singularity of vision has sculpted the world around them, and who has kept their authenticity through and though while shinning imagination on the world so effectively. A true visionary and world class inspiration to us all, well let Wylan take it from here! Internationally renowned marine life artist Wyland is one of the most celebrated and recognized artists of our time. An innovative painter, sculpture, writer, photographer, philanthropist, and filmmaker, he captured the imagination of people everywhere by completing over one hundred monumental marine life murals around the world from 1981-2008. The project, known as the Whaling Walls, remains one of the largest public arts projects in history and continues to be seen by an estimated one billion people each year... An avid SCUBA diver and world traveler, the Detroit-born artist has been hailed a “Marine Michaelangelo” by USA Today and recognized for his art and conservation efforts by the United Nations and on the floor of Congress. His giant ocean mural on the convention center in Long Beach, Calif., covering over 3 acres, landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest mural ever painted. Several years later in recognition of Earth Day, he doubled the size of that mural by completing the largest portrait of the earth on earth on the building's three-acre roof -- in only twenty-four hours. In fact, no artist in history has painted more surface area that today is now measured in acres. His newest public art project, 100 Monumental Sculptures in 100 Great Cities around the world, includes plans to sculpt all the great whale species, as well as endangered and threatened animals from the IUCN Red List. Ten of these monumental sculptures will be underwater. “My art has always been about art and conservation,” Wyland says. “I was inspired in the early 70s by Green Peace, the first Earth Day, and from watching my hero Jacques Cousteau's Undersea World television series. I was simply an artist in the right place at the right time in history, and I felt strongly that art could play an important role in bringing attention to environmental issues.” Wyland's early inspiration grew upon seeing the ocean for the first time during a family visit to Laguna Beach, Calif., in 1971, when he was fourteen years old. The sight of a mother and baby gray whale migrating near the shore eventually inspired him to paint those same two whales on a life-size scale on an adjacent building in 1981. After the completion of the mural, he committed himself to creating one hundred ocean murals around the world as a gift to communities. He painted his 100th Whaling Wall mural in Beijing for the Cultural Olympics as the official artist for the US Olympic team. Today, Wyland art is collected in all fifty states and more than one hundred countries. He founded Wyland Galleries in 1978 with his first studio gallery in Laguna Beach where he lives today, and has influenced numerous traditional and street artists, including L.A.-based O.G. Slick. In 1993, he founded the non-profit Wyland Foundation as part of his continuing effort to inspire millions of people to take action to ensure clean water and a healthy planet through art, science, and conservation. The Wyland Foundation has partnered with the UN for the Wyland World Water Pledge to encourage allseven billion people

Why? Because critique is our fangirl love language, and because talking about books is pretty magical. I'm Jessie. kelly [00:00:36] And I'm Kelly. kelly [00:00:38] …Aaaannd I haven't written a plot summary, but I will do one on the fly. jessie [00:00:43] [laughs] You can do it! kelly [00:00:44] CROOKED KINGDOM! Thank you again to Denise for commissioning this episode! I can't believe this book is over already, and I'm both a little sad but a little surprised at how happy the ending wound up being. When we get right down to it, these chapters end about as ideally as it's possible to be. There's the adorable shacking up of Jesper and Wylan, and Wylan recovering his inheritance and bringing his mother back to live with him. Then there's Inej and Kaz holding hands for the first time, and him finding her family and getting nervous about meeting her family. And of course, Inej facing down Pekka Rollins and scaring him the fuck out of Ketterdam. The only blight on the perfection of this ending is the fact that Nina lost Matthias, and she's gone away to bury him in Fjerda. I hate this part, and I hate Inej missing her. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you again soon with the start of Shadow And Bone!
Thank you so much Jaime for commissioning this episode! I'm so glad to be getting back into this book. I didn't even realize how much I missed it until I was into it again, amongst our loveable rapscallions, and I'm glad that in these chapters we're getting some pretty solid (though doubtless temporary) victories. First off, there's the wonderful pairing of a newly-restored Wylan and Jesper, which makes my heart happy. And then there's the absolute stone-cold badassery of Kaz Brekker taking back the Dregs. Fucking YES!Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thanks so much to Jill for commissioning this episode! My apologies ahead of time, because I talked so much about a couple of aspects of the story that I go over time and don't get to talk about everything that happened. However, I promise I made up for it in the next one! These chapters, the most important thing that happens (in my opinion) is getting to know Wylan a little better. He's the character that I've felt the least connection with, and I love that we get a look inside his head at the way he was treated and the way he internalized that. Finding out that his father was treating someone else this way is the only thing that really gets him to see what his father really is. This is some good shit. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Wylan Gao '20 and WSS podcaster Ken Wilbur touch on Chinese current events ranging from the actions of political activist Huang Chi to the incendiary developments of 2018's Golden Horse Awards.
Many thanks to Jill for commissioning the first episode of Crooked Kingdom! I'm so happy to be able to dive right into the world again and find out what is happening with our old crew now that they have a whole new mission. This book starts off with a POV chapter from an entirely new character, which I sure didn't expect, and I'm kind of into it. He's kind of an asshole, and he knows it, although he certainly tries to rationalize that to himself. But then this mysterious noob is snapped up by some squallers (at least that's what I think they are) wearing wings later and I don't know what to think. And then we get a POV from Wylan, which is a new one, and he's having a hard time with everything that they're doing to get Inej back. I'm not even going so far as to say that he thinks what they're doing is wrong, it's just that it's bothering him and he's struggling to push it down somewhere that it won't be constantly popping up and getting in the way of their work. Because make no mistake, there's lots of work left to be done. Thank you all so much for listening, and thank you again Jill! Hope I can see you all soon with a new episode!
Wow okay so where to begin on this one. I mean we can talk about the most obvious thing, which is pretty much just OMG INEJ NO! or we can talk about the fact that Wylan's dad is pure evil and poor Wylan is an abused boy, or we can talk about how NOBODY GETS FUCKIN PAID. All of which are totally valid. Y'all I mean. Poor Nina takes what's essentially poison to boost her powers, and it's basically burning through her life force from the inside, but GHAT-DAMN does it fucking do some cool shit to her, and I'm low-key very selfishly glad she took it because I wanted to see what would happen! Turns out, A LOT WILL HAPPEN. Also, there's a tank. Thanks so much for commissioning this book, everyone, and I will see you soon with the start of Crooked Kingdom!
Thank you to Jill for commissioning this episode of Six Of Crows! We're getting deep into the heist now, and predictably, shit is going very wrong. But the ways in which shit is going wrong are not predictable at all. Here is the final reveal of why Kaz holds the grudge he does, and I know that Pekka's men were on pikes outside but for some reason I didn't think that Pekka himself was going to be in the fucking prison. I have no idea what Kaz is going to do, but i'm hopeful that Nina will get to him in time that he gets the idea to frame Pekka for the death of the guard. Because, spoiler alert, Nina is wandering around on her own and kills a guard because she gets so flustered after discovering a torture champer (or something) for Grisha that she loses track of where she is. Meanwhile, Inej is trying to climb the inside of a red hot chimney with a bunch of live coals waiting for her at the bottom, and her shoes are melting off. Oh yeah, and Jesper is gay and flirting shamelessly with Wylan, and it's hilarious. Thanks for listening!
