Jonathan Tarleton, an urban planner and oral historian, talked about his book 'Homes for Living: The Fight for Social Housing and a New American Commons.' We discussed his motivation behind writing the book, which focuses on two social housing cooperatives in Brooklyn and Manhattan. We go in-depth about the ongoing housing crises in the U.S., the difference between cooperatives and social housing as well as the disparities in wealth-building opportunities for Black and Brown communities. Tarleton explains his personal viewpoints on the Mitchell-Lama program, challenges in the co-op governance, the technicalities behind privatization and the broader fight for social housing. We also touch on how larger community involvement and public perception towards viewing housing as a public good can help sustain affordable housing models.Jonathan Tarleton is a writer, urban planner, and oral historian. He is the author of Homes for Living: The Fight for Social Housing and a New American Commons. He previously served as the chief researcher on Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas and as the editor of Urban Omnibus. Living Hell introduces readers to Jerome Jameel—a husband, father, and demon who has escaped Hell to start a new life on Earth. What inspired you to create a protagonist with such a complex duality?2. The series blends elements of humor, heart, and darkness, drawing comparisons to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Good Omens. How did you approach balancing these tones within the narrative?3. As both the writer and artist for Living Hell, how did your creative process evolve when developing the visual style to complement the story's supernatural themes?4. The concept of Hell as a prison where demons have lived in exile is intriguing. Can you elaborate on your interpretation of Hell and how it influences the characters' motivations?5. Jerome's encounter with a bounty hunter from Hell sets the plot in motion. Without giving too much away, what can readers expect from this confrontation and its impact on Jerome's new life?6. Living Hell is your creator-owned debut. What challenges and rewards have you experienced in bringing your own vision to life through this series?7. The series is described as a four-issue miniseries. How did you structure the storyline to ensure a satisfying arc within this format?8. (Fun/Silly Question!) If you were a demon escaping Hell to live incognito on Earth, what profession would you choose to blend in, and why?

To celebrate the return of Inside Baseball Week – during which we publish a barrage of stories about the lesser-known parts of game dev, the ins and outs of games journalism, and other topics so specific no other website would ever touch them – we put together a roundtable about worker-owned media featuring Aftermath's Nathan Grayson and Riley MacLeod, Defector's David Roth, 404 Media's Emanuel Maiberg, and Hell Gate's Max Rivlin-Nader. We go deep on all sorts of topics: What was the hardest part of starting a publication in this mold? How did you know when you'd found your site's voice? How do you collectively make decisions when everyone's an owner? Who handles business stuff when everyone's a writer (and, in Aftermath's case, definitely NOT a businessperson)? How do you promote the written word to a video-obsessed internet? And at what point do you, somebody who got into this business to be a journalist, have to transform yourself into at least a bit of an influencer? And perhaps most importantly, how can sites like ours work together to create a scene that provides opportunities to new voices as opposed to just cashing in on preexisting clout? Finally, we get to the topic everyone's really listening for: the awkward truth underlying podcast ad reads about people's guts not working right. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. After much anticipation, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially entered the race for New York City mayor, joining a crowded Democratic primary field. Cuomo resigned in 2021 amid 11 allegations of sexual harassment, though Cuomo has denied wrongdoing. NY1's Errol Louis spoke about Cuomo's legacy and his future, with Christopher Robbins, an editor and co-founder of the news outlet Hell Gate. They also talked about recent polling that shows Mayor Eric Adams' job approval rating dipping to an all-time low. And they discussed the reasons why Robbins started Hell Gate and what he sees in the future for the news outlet. ***Spectrum News NY1 and Roosevelt House will be co-hosting a special panel discussion on the political career and legacy of New York City Mayor John Lindsay. Inspired by the NY1 three-part limited audio series covering Lindsay's political career, the conversation will be held at Roosevelt House on March 13 at 6 p.m. It will be moderated Errol Louis and feature a panel of Lindsay administration alumni and journalists who will discuss Lindsay's eight years in office from 1966 to 1973 — one of the most chaotic and transformative times in New York's recent history. It will explore his accomplishments as mayor, as well as the staggering number of challenges he faced during his two terms. Anyone who wishes to attend the event will need to RSVP. Last summer, OTM host Micah Loewenger reported a piece about the rise of worker-owned newsrooms: Hell Gate, a local New York publication, and Defector, a national outlet focused on sports and culture. Inspired by Defector and Hell Gate, more worked-owned outlets have come on the scene — including 404 Media, known for its mix of fun internet coverage and hard-nosed investigations. In this week's midweek podcast, Micah speaks to 404 co-founder Samantha Cole about the challenges they have faced since they started their own outlet. Many of the rising stars that were poised to “save journalism” like Vice and Buzzfeed have either entered bankruptcy or stopped reporting on news. There have been layoffs across the industry and many newsrooms have cut back on the resources available to journalists. But workers have also organized unions, including high-profile campaigns at Condé Nast and The New Yorker, and started worker-owned media like Hell Gate and Defector. This month on “Meet the BIPOC Press”, Laura Flanders is joined by three journalists who have lived through the struggles and are a part of the solutions. Alex Sujong Laughlin is a supervising producer and co-owner at Defector; Esther Wang is a worker-owner at Hell Gate; and Tammy Kim helped organize unions at Al Jazeera America and The New Yorker, where she is a contributing writer. How do they think about the future of journalism, and what difference does it make when journalists have the freedom to speak truth to power — especially when it comes to reporting on policing and Palestine? Guests:• Tammy Kim: Contributing Writer, The New Yorker• Alex Sujong Laughlin: Supervising Producer & Co-Owner, Defector Media• Esther Wang: Co-Founder, Hell Gate; Former Senior Political Reporter, Jezebel Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more. How do they think about the future of journalism, and what difference does it make when journalists have the freedom to speak truth to power — especially when it comes to reporting on policing and Palestine?“. . . One of the biggest reasons people mentioned wanting to work for Defector was actually citing the Palestine coverage because it was so refreshing for them to see journalists speaking frankly about their opinions about what's happening and not being beholden to really archaic rules of journalistic objectivity.” - Alex Sujong Laughlin“. . . In New York, Hellgate and other local news outlets were part of an initiative to get a new bill to support local news included as part of this year's budget . . . Much to our surprise, it actually was included. [It's] a tax credit for smaller outlets and a way to support local news in an environment where Google and Facebook have killed off all of the revenue streams. Those kinds of initiatives give me hope.” - Esther Wang". . . Families have been torn asunder, bar brawls are up an astounding 237%, and Eric Adams was so shaken to his core, he found God (again). The bracket provoked conversation, discussion, takes about the takes, and a metadiscourse about chopped cheese that we're now even sorry we started. But now the takes must battle it out! From these 64 exemplary competitors, only one will win. So we've put together some hot take bracket-ologists, who also happened to author the hot takes, to get to the bottom of the hottest take of all, previewing some of the spiciest match-ups, But now the takes must battle it out! From these 64 exemplary competitors, only one will win. So we've put together some hot take bracket-ologists, who also happened to author the hot takes, to get to the bottom of the hottest take of all, previewing some of the spiciest match-ups, like:If you live within a 15-minute walk of a restaurant, you should not be allowed to order delivery from it (5) vs. You should only be able to order delivery from restaurants within a 15-minute walk from you (12) Andrew Cuomo should be mayor, it's a proper punishment for his misdeeds (7) vs. Bill de Blasio is a catch (10) The Carbone private dining club looks fun and I would appreciate an invitation (7) vs. If you live in an apartment with a dog and it barks for hours every time you leave it alone, your neighbors are not in the wrong for complaining to your landlord (10) If someone on the street asks you for a dollar, and you pull out your wallet and all you have is a $20, you must give them the $20 (5) vs. If you see someone selling candy on the subway, buy some candy (12) Those nut vendors should be banned for false advertising (they're not that good) (2) vs. Clipping your nails on the subway is fine but EATING on the subway is not (15) There should be a thing where on every subway car, one person is algorithmically selected to be able to share their phone screen onto all the video screens in the car (4) vs. If you actually want me to compost, I'm gonna need a City-sponsored coupon booklet or a tax write-off or some other incentive. Until then, my food waste is going in the trash! (13) Flaco should have lived out the rest of his life in a cage the size of a minivan (3) vs. All the animals in the Central Park Zoo should be freed and allowed to roam the streets of New York City, like Flaco (14) The MTA should play piped-in Muzak in subway stations (7) vs. Weed is too strong and New York state should pass a law to make it weaker (10)Who will be victorious? Will we even announce a winner? Possible not! Even so, we felt it was time to bring back the now-irregularly-released Hell Gate Podcast! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

1775 belonged to Boston but after April of 1776, the Revolutionary War's focus became New York City and the highly strategic Long Island, from Brooklyn's terminal moraine high ground to Queens's Hell Gate. 1776 was the year when revolution came to Long Island, and in particular the future Long Island City. The failures, defeats and eventual occupation of the area at the hands of the British forged the resolve and strength of character that would later ensure Patriot victories on distant battlegrounds throughout the rest of the colonies. The British did not evacuate western Queens County until November of 1783, but the events of 1776 would not soon be forgotten during the seven long years of occupation afterword. And these are some very challenging races, like Hellgate, Potawatomi 200 miler, Grindstone, Hellbender, Bear, IMTUF, Ouray, Ute, and so many others. So he does not back down from tough races and grinds it out. He also has completed Eastern States 100 and was just selected to run Western States 100 in 2024. From the people that brought you Hellraiser and Night Patrol (you read that right) comes 1989's HELLGATE.  This movie stars Ron Palillo (Welcome Back Kotter) and a group of actors who weren't in Welcome Back Kotter as students (?) who's weekend getaway turns to terror when they're lured to a ghost town (?) called Hellgate.   This movie has everything.  Is it a horror movie?  Is it a sci-fi movie?  Is it a comedy?  Is it a producer's attempt to showcase their enviable car collection?  The answer to all these questions is, "yes".   We talk about the sadly overlooked traveling model industry, the lasting appeal of 1950's diners, and the challenges with using metal plates instead of band aids.  We also talk about boners more in this episode then ever before so you have that to look forward to.  We also debate whether Josie (the lead ghost in the movie) is trying to seduce Matt (Ron Palillo) for love or just so that he'll take over her daily chores.   This movie ranks high on our "fun meter".  If you liked ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE, then you owe yourself to take HELLGATE out for a spin.  Just watch out for brick walls.

This show is made possible by you!  To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateThe notorious Rikers, a 10-jail complex situated on an island in the East River of New York City, has become a national symbol and a symptom of our current approach to crime. The jail has over 6,000 inmates — the majority of whom are awaiting trial because they can't afford bail — living in unconstitutionally inhumane conditions, a federal court once ruled. In October 2019, the New York City Council passed, and then Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law, a plan to permanently close Rikers and replace the jails with four borough facilities by August 2027. But the proposed closure has hit roadblocks — from the left, from the right, from the prison guards union and from concerned residents who live near where new jails would be built. Although many support the Rikers closure, there is little agreement as to how and when — or what should replace it. Why is it so difficult to make changes to our challenged carceral system? Joining Laura to discuss the local and national implications of this story are Journalist Nick Pinto, co-founder of Hell Gate, a worker-owned news outlet covering New York City, and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who helped pass the law to close the jail. Elected Public Advocate last fall, he is now the prime sponsor of legislation that would ban solitary confinement in city jails.“. . . The education that's necessary to bring the voting public along with this sort of change is difficult. It's especially difficult in the face of a concerted fear mongering campaign.” - Nick Pinto“This is the first time I've seen a population of folks in the city and the state who are ready to receive a conversation that's holistic around public safety. And we're squandering it.” - Public Advocate Jumaane WilliamsGuests:Nick Pinto: NYC Journalist & Co-Founder, Hell GateJumaane D. This week, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien to celebrate the return of the complete media madhouse and talk through the week's big stories, including:I'm So Indicted and I Just Can't Fight It.” Donald Trump became the first former president to be indicted this past week—and he celebrated with a speech from his Mar-a-Lago estate that painted the charges against him as a partisan witch-hunt. How big a step is this? And where is it likely to lead?“(Re)Press Pass.” Russia has jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and is preparing to prosecute him on espionage charges. What appears to be driving Russia's decision? And how should the rest of the world respond?“Crossing the Finnish Line.” Finland became NATO's newest member this week, doubling the alliance's shared border with Russia. What does an expanding NATO mean for security in Europe? For object lessons, Quinta recommended Beverly Gage's recent biography of J. Edgar Hoover, “G-Man.” Scott urged listeners to check out U2's recent reimagining of their back catalogue, “Songs of Surrender.” And Tyler urged everyone—and especially New Yorkers—to check out the new NYC-focused publication, “Hell Gate.” Hosted on Acast.
