ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Five Broken Blades: "They're always standing on business." It has been a long while since ACOFAE read a heist book! Imagine Laura Marie's surprise when she went in blind and discovered a heist! Imagine Jessica Marie's surprise when she went in and found 6 POV's! Imagine the collective surprise when ACOFAE discovered that not only did they enjoy the book, but they were having FUN! Mai Corland's new release Five Broken Blades has it all: court politics, crime, a princess in disguise, love stories, and action! The action is what keeps you on the edge of your seat as the chapters get shorter and the plot thickens until we ultimately discover who was at the center of the scheme. Neither Laura Marie or Jessica Marie saw THE THING coming which was delightful on all fronts. Oh and there's a poison maiden. You know ACOFAE loves that. TW / CW: according to the author, the book itself contains violence, blood, death (including death of parents, children, incarcerated people and animals), poisoning, substance abuse, alcohol, sexual activity, animal abuse, gender-based violence, sex work, suicidal ideation, and indentured servitude are depicted. Sexual Assault and graphic genocide are described. For additional TW/CW information for your future reads, head to this site for more: https://triggerwarningdatabase.com/ Spoilers: Five Broken Blades Mentions: The Book of Azrael, Six of Crows Duology (Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom), The Vampire Diaries, Hercules, A Knight's Tale, Clue *Thank you for listening to us! This special episode dives into 'Crooked Kingdom,' with hosts Nina and Anya celebrating Anya's birthday by dissecting the book's fast-paced plot, intricate character developments, and the profound themes of personal growth, trauma, and found family. The discussion highlights Kaz's brilliance, Inej's journey, the dynamics within the crew including Jesper, Wylan, and Kuwei, and the deep emotional ties connecting the characters. The analysis extends to the series finale, focusing on character farewells, Nina's new abilities, and Kaz's development. We critically evaluate the book's romance and plot twists, especially the impact of Matthias's death, while expressing hopes for future narratives and heists that might reunite the characters. We tease the next episode's topic, 'The Serpent and the Wings of Night' by Carissa Broadbent.

THE GANG'S BACK, Y'ALL! After a VERY long hiatus, we are thrilled to be back with our Grishaverse pals Jessie and Aubrey to sit down and discuss everything SHADOW AND BONE Season 2 on Netflix! We talk new characters, our favorite (and least favorite) adaptive choices, plot convergences and that breakneak pacing, and everything in between. SPOILER WARNING: The same rules that applied to our coverage of the first season will apply here as well; we decided that the only way we can properly analyze how the show fits into the entire Grishaverse was to include the entire written Grishaverse into our analysis - this includes everything from the SHADOW AND BONE trilogy, the SIX OF CROWS duology, the KING OF SCARS duology, and of course the first season of the Netflix show. That said, we don't get too spoilery, but if you want to remain completely unspoiled on everything from the books we recommend that you come back and listen when you're done reading. Notes:The Verbivore references a quote from romance author Chandra Blumberg (Digging Up Love, Stirring Up Love), who we interviewed back in 2021. That episode was “Episode 89: Interview with Chandra Blumberg”. Here is her full quote:“There's definitely a stigma about different levels of heat in romance. Some people aren't comfortable with the high heat and they think it's all the high heat. But there's all sorts of romance for all different people. I was worried that if I write the sort of romance that I want to, will there be a place for it. And the answer is yes because there is. It's the same thing with fantasy and so many other genres – they run the gamut. Just like there's cozy mysteries or there's dark, gritty mysteries.… There's so much diversity in the genre and there's really something for everyone.“Towards the beginning of the conversation, we talk about the Romance genre being wide and growing, with characters that are starting to more accurately reflect the world around us - but there is still a long way to go. We strongly believe representation matters and that we all should be able to see ourselves reflected in stories with happy endings. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!!! Today's episode is a guest episode with my amazing best friend Riona! We talk about the second book in the Six of Crow duology by Leigh Bardugo! This is such a good book, and we are so obsessed with all of the characters!!!
This is one that Laura Marie and Jessica Marie will have to revisit. Less of a deep dive and more of a shallow skim, Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are discussing themes and tropes and not so much the plot of the duology. The love for Nina and Inej is strong as is the desire to age up these characters, because being a real life 17 and the dregs at 17 are two completely different things. This was recorded before the premier of the show and the excitement is clear toward the end. They'll take a mulligan and go deeper in a re-read for season 2, promise promise promise. *Jessie Mei Li uses she/they pronouns There are no spoilers in this episode outside of the Six of Crows Duology, but there are topics surrounding addiction, substance abuse, violence and sex work. *Thank you for listening to us! Check out our Six of Crows episode for a refresher on what happened in the last book! Side Note & Content Warning: We know we've been gone for a bit, and we appreciate you patience as we get back in the swing of things. We recorded this episode in November, and a lot has changed in the world since then. This could be a difficult episode to listen to if the current pandemic is taking a toll on your mental health. Obviously, we had no idea where the world would be in a few months. We also discuss addiction and child abuse in this episode. We'll keep our fingers crossed! While we love Harry Potter as much as the next person, but we do take issue with the problematic author. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a gritty YA fantasy heist story. It's got a racing plot, an interesting setting, and amazing characters. In this episode, I analyse the relationship between Kaz and Inej, using Mary Robinette Kowal's 6 relationship axes: Mind - Both people have similar levels of intelligence. Money - Both people have similar attitudes about money. They don't both have to have the same amount. This is about what money is for and how it's handled. Morals - Similar moral compasses of right and wrong. Manners - Similar senses of what is polite. So it's possible to have the same manners and wildly different morals. Monogamy - Similar attitudes about the relationship. You know that guy that thinks you are BFFs and you think you're just colleagues? Marx Brothers - You both find the same things funny. 25 - Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - The Art of Setting Descriptions. In this fantastic YA fantasy novel, the town of Ketterdam is a living, breathing, three-dimensional creation: as much a character as any of the other (brilliant) characters in this story. Bardugo is a master of making a setting come to life. In today's in-depth episode, I analyse a scene to extract key techniques writers can use to improve their setting descriptions. No mourners, no funerals.
