Jesse and Brittany are joined by their friend and former guest on the show, Ryan Bell. Ryan Bell is notable for his former work as a pastor and his public journey to becoming an atheist and living without God. Ryan started the blog "Year Without God" and continued his work with a popular podcast, "Life After God," documenting his journey out of the church. Ryan reflects on the ten-year anniversary of leaving behind his work as a pastor and how his views on god and religion have changed in that time. Ryan discusses his shift in focus from the "god question" to humanism and his work in organizing and tenant rights. Follow Ryan on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ryanjbell Follow Ryan's Substack: https://ryanbell.substack.com/ SUPPORT THE SHOW ON PATREON: http://www.TeamDollemore.comNEW MERCH AVAILABLE AT: http://www.dollemore.info Join the private Facebook listener group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1770575259637583 Send a text or voicemail of fewer than three minutes to (657) 464-7609.Show Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/IDoubtPodcastShow Twitter- http://www.twitter.com/IDoubtItPodcastJesse on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/dollemoreBrittany on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/brittanyepageSupport the show – Buy a T-Shirt, Hoodie, Mug, or Tote – https://www.dollemore.infoPatreon – http://www.dollemore.com/patreonPayPal – http://www.dollemore.com/paypalAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this week's episode, Ryan Bell shares his compelling story of deconversion. Ryan also talks about what he's been up to since joining the Secular Student Alliance as National Organizer Manager. I've been looking forward to meeting Ryan for a while, so it was wonderful to finally speak with him. Although I'm familiar with Ryan's story, I learned some fascinating new details during our conversation. He explains what convinced him to stop pursuing Pre-Med in college and become a pastor. He also shares what motivated him to live in Nicaragua for 6 weeks. Finally, it was fun to hear the story of how his "Year Without God" blog went viral, resulting in breakfast with Penn Jillette.  Ryan spent nearly 20 years in congregational pastoral ministry. His very public deconversion in 2014 is documented in his blog, “Year Without God”. Since that time, Ryan has been a writer and speaker on the subjects of religion, humanism and justice. In 2015, he founded the Life After God community and is the host of the Life After God podcast. His writing can be found at The Humanist, CNN, and The Guardian. https://secularstudents.org ryan.bell@secularstudents.org http://www.lifeaftergod.org https://www.facebook.com/ourlifeaftergod/ https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/life-after-god @ryanjbell @ourlifeaftergod http://www.patheos.com/blogs/yearwithoutgod/

Meet Catherine, an AP psychology teacher, who cycled through public school, private school, and homeschooling so often as a child that she only spent one year in one educational setting. By the time she got to high school, she had an education about the level of 5th or 6th grade. Catherine didn’t know how to be a successful student, but she found that popularity was easy, so she invested her energy into friendships. Upon graduating, she swore to never step foot in a school again. She got married and started a family. Several years later, she found herself pursing a college degree and then graduate school. Now a high school teacher, Catherine encourages her students to pursue their passions and work hard to achieve their goals. A Year Without God? Yup, at the end of 2013, former pastor Ryan Bell announced he was gonna "try on" atheism for a year. And boy, it didn't take too long for the media to take notice. So what made a life-long Christian, who pastored for nearly 20 years, do such a thing? Well, it's been over a year since his experiment began, and I had the opportunity to chat with him at his home in Pasadena, California. So get ready ... this episode is sure to get you thinking. IN THIS EPISODE, RYAN ANSWERED THE FOLLOWING: • What events led to your  "Year Without God"? • What difference does God make? • How do you respond to skeptics? • Did you ever "pray" during your atheist experiment? • Why not "A Year Without Christianity?" instead of God? • Why atheism? Why not deism? Pantheism? • How would you define the God you reject? • How did your "year without God" affect your family? • How did the atheist community influence your journey? • Do you ever miss the old notion of God you used to have? (e.g., a loving father, provider) • Do you ever feel like your religious years were all a waste? • What would it take for you to believe in God again? In this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors, after a quick discussion about the ways they would abuse lucid dreaming and why living like Jesus would completely screw up one’s life, Christian and Jason analyze the recently finished yearlong experiment of Ryan Bell, a former pastor who decided last January to live like an atheist and report his findings. They then address feedback from listeners on the topics of scientific theory (it’s just theory!), torture (it’s totally OK!), and Capitalism (they hate it, obviously). They then address the recent suicide of Leelah (Joshua) Alcorn, a transgender teen who was told by their parents that “God doesn’t make mistakes.” Jason is biebered by rhyming with poor timing, and Christian is biebered by people who are biebered by New Year’s resolutions. Also, Christian explains why you should be happy that your partner would like to have sex with other people.

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/7Yp89HI1sdg Monday, January 6th, 2014, Hour 2: PREACHERS IN THE PULPIT (GUEST): Dr. Ryan J. Bell, "social justice Christian" and former pastor of nearly 20 years was "trying" what he called "A Year Without God: A Former Pastor’s Journey Into Atheism" (Huffington Post) https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-year-without-god_b_4512842 Ryan was supposed to come in-studio here in Los Angeles, but cancelled and joined by phone from Pasadena, CA. He was born United Methodist, but his parents soon changed to Seventh Day Adventist. He was involved at Fuller Theological Seminary, Azusa Pacific University, He thinks that Christian churches are unfair to LGBT people and women as members and leaders. Jesse asks him: Did you have a trauma or test in life that you failed at? If you don’t believe in God, where do you get your moral grounding from? Callers confront Ryan, including Guy from Phoenix, AZ, and Bible Go-to Guy from Los Angeles, CA. They touch on that homosexual marriage has been rejected everywhere for 10,000 years, that atheists set up city-states called socialism or communism, which is where those beliefs take you. Someone says that's a mouthful. Atheists don’t believe in God, so they are their own god — or aren't they? When asked if he'll come back, he hems and haws, and under pressure for a yes or no, he lies and says he'll come back later in the year. Atheists do lie. Now Ryan Bell is the founder, director, and senior consultant at Life After God and host of the Life After God podcast.
