I've been looking forward to meeting Ryan for a while, so it was wonderful to finally speak with him. He also shares what motivated him to live in Nicaragua for 6 weeks. Finally, it was fun to hear the story of how his "Year Without God" blog went viral, resulting in breakfast with Penn Jillette.  Ryan spent nearly 20 years in congregational pastoral ministry. Meet Catherine, an AP psychology teacher, who cycled through public school, private school, and homeschooling so often as a child that she only spent one year in one educational setting. By the time she got to high school, she had an education about the level of 5th or 6th grade. Catherine didn’t know how to be a successful student, but she found that popularity was easy, so she invested her energy into friendships. Upon graduating, she swore to never step foot in a school again. She got married and started a family. Several years later, she found herself pursing a college degree and then graduate school. Now a high school teacher, Catherine encourages her students to pursue their passions and work hard to achieve their goals. Ryan Bell, a former Seventh Day Adventist Pastor, tried an experiment. What would life be like if he spent a year without God? He blogged about his adventure at Year Without God. He talks about that year, what he is doing now, and his new podcast, Life After God. Ryan is the third in my three-part series on pastors who have left the ministry and the church's beliefs behind.

A Year Without God? Yup, at the end of 2013, former pastor Ryan Bell announced he was gonna "try on" atheism for a year. And boy, it didn't take too long for the media to take notice. So what made a life-long Christian, who pastored for nearly 20 years, do such a thing?
