Women are walking away from church in record numbers, not because they’ve lost faith, but because something went wrong inside the walls. In this episode, Dr. Catherine Toon names what’s really driving the quiet exodus and brings a radically different voice to the conversation: what does God—who is Love—have to say to women who are done? This part 1 of this 2-part series you'll discover: • Why Gen Z women are leaving church at higher rates than any previous generation • How overemphasis on purity culture and gender roles damaged women’s spiritual lives • The burnout epidemic and why women were the church’s unpaid labor force • What authentic community (not fake niceness) actually looks like • How seeing God as Love, not a cosmic authority demanding submission, changes everything Exhausted and worn out? In this episode, Dudley and Sam dive into the reality of deconstruction and why so many men are walking away from church, yet still searching for Jesus. You'll hear how faith was never meant to be reduced to self-improvement, but rooted in the finished work of Christ, where salvation is a gift, not something we earn. This conversation calls men back to their true identity in Christ, moving beyond disappointment and into a deeper understanding of grace, purpose, and truth. It speaks into biblical masculinity, reminding us that real strength is found in surrender, and that our role in fatherhood and life flows from knowing who we are in Him.Get Dudley's Weekly Word delivered right to your inbox every Friday! After losing the uncle she considered her father at nineteen, Keya struggled for decades to find healing. When traditional grief advice and religious expectations failed to help, she began searching for a more authentic path forward. Through therapy, journaling, walking, and deep self-reflection, she discovered that grief does not follow stages and healing cannot be forced. Together, Nick and Keya explore grief myths, mental health, spiritual identity, and the courage required to rebuild a life after loss. Their conversation is both deeply honest and unexpectedly hopeful for anyone navigating grief.THIS EPISODE ANSWERS• Why do common grief phrases like “they're in a better place” sometimes hurt more than help? • What happens when traditional grief advice or religious support doesn't help you heal? • Can therapy, journaling, and nature actually help untangle long-term grief and depression? • Why do the “five stages of grief” fail many people who are grieving deeply? • How can someone begin healing after years of suicidal thoughts and emotional pain?KEY TAKEAWAYS• Grief does not follow stages and healing is rarely linear. • Well-intentioned grief advice can sometimes invalidate real emotional pain. • Authentic healing often begins when people reconnect with themselves. • Simple practices like journaling and walking can create powerful emotional breakthroughs. • People struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts are not alone and help exists.CONTACT KEYA! Many people leave what has been labeled “church” and finally feel relief—only to discover they're still not as free as they expected. In this episode, Russ explores why clarity isn't the same as freedom, how self-reliance quietly survives outside religion, and why real freedom requires more than understanding—it requires a different way of life.Learn more at Larksite.com ______________________________________________________________________Helping You Learn To Live Loved...Become a Lark Supporter: https://larksite.com/donateWeb: https://larksite.comLarkcast: https://larksite.com/larkcastBook: Reclaim (Available on Amazon) https://larksite.com/reclaimInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lark_social/
"If you leave church because you are hurt, you never understood what church was about." - Pastor FemiControversial? Absolutely. But before you comment, hear the full conversation.Young people are leaving church in record numbers—especially African immigrants and diaspora Christians who grew up in the faith. Pastor Femi, Kenneth, and Esther tackle why this is happening and whether walking away is actually the answer.**The Real Problem:** The church's message isn't relevant anymore. Prosperity gospel, performative religion, and outdated approaches don't address real-world struggles. Young people can get what church promises—success, happiness, community—without the restrictions.**The Internet Christianity Trap:** The pandemic normalized watching church online. But PF warns: isolated faith can't survive spiritual warfare. "You watch service for one hour, shut the screen—there's no interaction with anything spiritual. The devil whispers something, and there's no one there to challenge it."**Church Hurt—The Hard Truth:** PF's take: "Church is a hospital. We're all patients." Everyone is imperfect. You've hurt people. People will hurt you. The question isn't whether to leave when hurt happens—it's understanding that church is where broken people heal together. But here's the key distinction: Leave a toxic congregation if you must. Don't abandon the body of Christ. Find a church that fits—different worship styles, different emphases, but stay connected to community.**What We Cover:**• Why young African Christians are leaving church• The danger of YouTube theology and self-proclaimed teachers• Spectator church vs. real community• Accountability vs. forgiveness in church leadership• How to find the right church without church shopping• The woman caught in adultery: loving people into repentance**Key Quotes:**"Church is a hospital. We're all patients." - PF"How can you say you love God but despise his body?" - PF"YouTube made deconstruction fashionable." - PF"We don't abandon relationships; we try to make relationships better." - PFIf you've been hurt by church or you're questioning whether to stay, this conversation is for you.**Subscribe for more unfiltered conversations about faith, culture, and real Christian living.**---### Timestamps / Chapters0:00 - Intro: New Covenant House Goes Viral2:45 - Why Young People Are Leaving Church5:05 - The Problem with the Prosperity Gospel Message9:19 - Church Hurt: Why People Are Walking Away13:24 - Internet Christianity & The Pandemic Effect16:20 - The Dangers of YouTube Theology18:43 - Self-Proclaimed Teachers & Bible Studies Gone Wrong23:35 - The Spectator Church Problem25:27 - Church Hurt: Should You Leave or Stay?28:31 - Church as a Hospital for Imperfect People32:05 - When Worship Style Becomes a Dealbreaker36:55 - Finding the Right Church Community38:55 - Accountability vs. Forgiveness in Church Leadership41:24 - Loving People Into Repentance (The Woman Caught in Adultery)45:03 - Final Encouragement: Don't Turn Your Back on the Body of Christ#ChurchHurt #ChristianPodcast #PFUnfiltered #LeavingChurch #ChristianCommunity #FaithJourney #ChurchLeadership #BlackChurch #AfricanDiaspora #OnlineChurch #InternetChristianity #Deconstruction #ChristianYouTube #BibleTeaching #PastorFemi #NewCovenantHouse #FaithAndCulture #ChurchAccountability #ForgivenessInChurch #ChristianConversations
This week's thought is taken from the parable of the lad with a dull ax, from Timothy Merrill. Once upon a time, a long time ago, a young man approached a logging crew in the verdant and forested woodlands of British Columbia. He was looking for work. The foreman asked George, for that was his name, if he could fell a tree with an ax. He had never chopped down a tree before, but how hard could it be? With nary a syllable out of his mouth, he lumbered over to a nearby blue spruce and felled it like a...Article Link

In this candid car conversation, Marc and Fuller tackle some of the most common and difficult questions about church life that the RTC Online Facebook Community has been asking. They dive deep into the thorny issue of church attendance - when it's okay to miss and when you might be making excuses - while sharing personal stories about their own church search experiences. The discussion gets particularly honest when they explore the challenges of finding a new church home, including what to look for, how long the process might take, and the difference between healthy church transfers versus unhealthy "church shopping." The conversation takes a personal turn as they share their own stories of leaving churches - one for doctrinal reasons and another for family reestablishment after major life changes. They also wrestle with one of the most challenging scenarios many couples face: what to do when your spouse, whether saved or unsaved, simply doesn't want to attend church. Their advice emphasizes patience, prayer, and having difficult but loving conversations while maintaining the importance of remaining connected to the body of Christ, even when circumstances make it complicated. On, and we almost hit a deer. //Other Episode You Might Enjoy// 36: What's Up With All of These Different Denominations? 121: Why Mega Church Pastors Fall 198: Is Church Membership a Real Thing? 217: Has the Church Become Too Corporate? 220: When Should I Leave My Church? // Helpful Links // https://www.youtube.com/@realtalkchristianpodcast The Christian Standard Bible: https://csbible.com Lifeway Christian Resources: www.lifeway.com Got Questions?: www.gotquestions.org Dwell Bible App: https://dwellapp.io Cross Formed Kids from Ryan Coatney: https://www.crossformedkids.com RTC Quick Links: https://linktr.ee/realtalkchristianpodcast RTC Online: www.realtalkchristianpodcast.com Twin Valley Coffee: https://www.coffeehelpingmissions.com Revive festival : Music Festival | En Gedi Music Fest | Leonidas, MI (myrevivefest.com) Toccoa Coffee:https://toccoacoffee.com RTC Merch-https://rtcpodcast.redbubble.com Let Them Live: https://letthemlive.org

We're blessed to hear from our East Jordan Campus Pastor, Jason Richey, this morning as he brings us a new message in our series of Hot Topics. This sermon tackles one of the most urgent and heartfelt issues facing the church today: why so many young adults are walking away from faith and what we, as followers of Jesus, can do about it. Rooted in Psalm 78:4–7, the message explores how authenticity, humility, and honest conversations are key to rebuilding trust and relevance with the next generation. Whether you're grieving someone who has stepped away, questioning your own beliefs, or passionate about helping bridge the gap between generations, this message offers hope, clarity, and a clear call to action.

For the first time in history women are leading the leaving of the faith. For the last 15 years, they have led the American apostasy on the pop-culture scene, and they have led in the popular evangelly fish book market. Almost all top-ten Christian books have been authored by women for the last 10 years or so, paving the exit ramps off the highway of orthodoxy for other women. But young men are going back to church. They want to hear the hard truths, and they are staying in discipleship. Good signs for the church in the 21st Century. This program includes: 1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (Kamala would have done nothing differently than Biden; David Brainerd, missionary to Indians, an inspiration) 2. Generations with Kevin Swanson

The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus -Kamala would have done nothing differently than Biden- David Brainerd, missionary to Indians, an inspiration---2. Generations with Kevin Swanson

Surprising new data is in on whether GenZ men or women are leaving the church. We dig into and get all robust with this conversation. Are young men feeling isolated, unsupported, and under constant attack in today's culture? When they turn to the church for guidance, they often find little support, leading many to seek controversial internet figures instead. Some feel masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, yet it remains prominent in the real world. Amidst discussions on toxic masculinity, there's a perceived lack of initiatives nurturing positive masculine growth and responsibility among young men. This may be contributing to Gen Z Christian males becoming more religious than their female peers, who are increasingly religiously unaffiliated, and disillusioned potentially by abuse revelations like #MeToo and #ChurchToo. For the first time ever, young men are outpacing young women when it comes to church affiliation and religious expression. • Young men are now more religious than young women, contradicting a long-held narrative. • Young men feeling unsupported, isolated, and under constant attack, turning to controversial internet figures for guidance. • Masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, leading to a lack of personal connection and reality. • Gen Z women increasingly religiously unaffiliated, disillusioned by #MeToo, #ChurchToo abuse revelations. • Young women leaving churches due to pastors' sexual misconduct and abuse. • Young men value traditional family life more than young women, contrasting with societal narratives promoting career success. • Complementarian churches reduce women's visibility, driving them away yet liberal denominations ordaining women decline steeply. • Conservative and liberal churches face challenges regarding growth and retention, with liberal churches struggling due to a lack of clear boundaries. Millions of Americans are leaving church. Are they also leaving their faith? Thirty years ago, about 90 percent of Americans identified as Christian. Today, that's dropped to about 60 percent.Meanwhile, the number of people without any religious affiliation at all continues to grow. For some, the decision to leave is rooted in conflict and pain. But for most people, the reasons for leaving church are a lot more mundane.MPR News guest host Kelly Gordon talks with a researcher and a pastor about the historic exodus from Christian congregations, what some have called the “great de-churching.”
The Survey Center on American Life finds Gen Z women are much more likely to leave the church. Men are actually doing better than the previous generation. Why are women abandoning religion? Leading authors, journalists, and teachers are increasingly women, and they don't teach good stuff. They are leading the apostasy, and their folly is manifest to all, as the Apostle Paul put it. This program includes: 1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (Ukrainian Christians are being tortured & murdered for their faith; Study: Most kids grow out of “gender confusion;” George Müller's first orphanage anniversary) 2. Generations with Kevin Swanson

"I like it much better than ‘religious' or ‘spiritual' — to be a seeker after the sacred or the holy, which ends up for me being the really real."– Rev. Barbara Brown TaylorFrom Krista, about this week's show:It's fascinating to trace the arc of spiritual searching and religious belonging in my lifetime. The Episcopal priest and public theologian Barbara Brown Taylor was one of the people I started learning about when I left diplomacy to study theology in the early 1990s. At that time, she was leading a small church in Georgia. And she preached the most extraordinary sermons, and turned them into books read far and wide. Then in 2006, she wrote Leaving Church — about her decision to leave her life of congregational ministry, finding other ways to stay, as she's written, "alive and alert to the holy communion of the human condition, which takes place on more altars than anyone can count.” She's written other books since, with titles like An Altar in the World, Learning to Walk in the Dark, and Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others. Being in the presence of Barbara Brown Taylor's wonderfully wise and meandering mind and spirit, after all these years of knowing her voice in the world, is a true joy. I might even use a religious word — it feels like a "blessing." And this is not a conversation about the decline of church or about more and more people being "spiritual but not religious." We both agree that this often-repeated phrase is not an adequate way of seeing the human hunger for holiness. This is as alive as it has ever been in our time — even if it is shape-shifting in ways my Southern Baptist and Barbara's Catholic and Methodist forebears could never have imagined.Barbara Brown Taylor is the author of many books, including An Altar in the World, Leaving Church, Holy Envy, and Learning to Walk in the Dark. Her 2020 book is Always a Guest, a compilation of recent sermons. She is the former rector of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church of Clarkesville, Georgia, and she taught for two decades in the religion department at Piedmont College. This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode "Barbara Brown Taylor — ‘This Hunger for Holiness'."
