I'm kind of curious about the Russian Orthodox Church and what they believe in, how they came to be, and how they're different from mainstream Catholicism and Protestantism. How much do you know about the Russian Orthodox Church? Can you talk about that on the Dustin Off the Degree segment for a future Atheist Nomads episode? As it turns out as with everything related to religion, this is a really complex and big topic and there's some background information we need to cover before we really get to the question. Using the colloquial terms there are really four main branches of Christianity: Oriental OrthodoxEastern OrthodoxRoman CatholicProtestant Often the Eastern Orthodox churches are just referred to as Orthodox and the Roman Catholic church is often just referred to as Catholic. But technically speaking the Catholic and Orthodox churches are all Catholic and all Orthodox. Catholic means universal and Orthodox means correct doctrine. They all view themselves as the church founded by Christ with the great commission and their bishops to be the successors to the apostles. Protestants are the newest branch, splitting off from the Roman Catholic Church during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century in central and western Europe. The Protestants believe that Christians are saved by faith and not works, that the priesthood belongs to all believers with all Christians having direct access to Christ, and that the Bible is the only source for doctrine. Catholics on the other hand believe that your works will determine how quickly you get to heaven, that priests are a special class of believers, that only the Pope has direct access to Christ, and that church tradition what determines dogma. What this created was groups of Christians in the west that were not in communion with the Bishop of Rome, commonly referred to as the Holy Father, Papa, or Pope. The Christians that remained in communion with the Bishop of Rome remained part of the Roman Catholic Church. For the split between the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church, we have to go back to the Roman Emperor Constantine. He converted to Christianity, made Christianity the official religion of the empire, and moved his capital from Rome to Byzantium, renaming it Constantinople. This disrupted the power dynamics in the church by making Rome less significant and moving the seat of government to the Greek side of the empire where there were far more Christians. When the empire split east to west, there was one patriarch, the Bishop of Rome, over the church in the Western Roman Empire with the remaining patriarchs left in charge of their provinces of the church in the Eastern Roman Empire. The Western empire and the church in it spoke Latin and conducted mass in Latin, while the Eastern empire and the church in it spoke Greek. By the time the western empire collapsed, the Bishop of Rome was already starting to fill the power vacuum that it created and quickly worked to created relations with the German kingdoms that were taking over the lands of the former empire, Rome then sent missionaries out to convert the Germans a created what was basically a diplomatic back channel throughout the region. Then when Charlemagne completed his conquests it was under the name of the Holy Roman Empire and he established his capital ...

This week we are joined by Mikey Pullman and talk about privacy in the online world, state sponsored religious foster care agencies, family values infidelity, how the kids are all right, and more. We have an Alexa skill. Just say Alexa, activate the Atheist Nomads skill. DISCUSSION - Privacy online NEWS The South Carolina governor has signed an executive order allowing foster care agencies to discriminate on the basis of religion The Obama administration updated regulations to prohibit foster care agencies that are publicly funded and licensed from servicing only specific religions, before that they were only prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race or national origin. Last week South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued an executive order to undermine that regulation making it perfectly fine to discriminate on the basis of religion and he's asked the US Department of Health and Human Services to exempt the state from the regulation. The "family values" GOP Iowa state senate majority leader has resigned after getting caught kissing a lobbyist in a bar Bill Dix is a married father of three and until last week was the anti gay “family values” Iowa state senate majority leader. He got caught on video kissing a lobbyist in a Des Moines bar. Stephen Hawking has died Generation Z is the most atheistic yet A new Barna Group study has found that 6% of the US population identifies as atheists. More interesting than that is the generational breakdowns. They found Baby Boomers to have the fewest atheists, at 5%, Elders and Gen-Xers were average at 6%, Millennials a little higher at 7%, but Gen Z came in at a full 13%. A Canadian gay conversion therapist got in terrible for having sex with his patients as part of their "treatment" A Canadian psychiatrist who ran a gay conversion clinic has been found guilty by the Ontario medical regulator of sexually abusing two patients. He will also face a hearing before the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. As the regulator found, the patients “thought that the sexual activity was part of the therapy and an attempt to cure them of homosexuality by engaging in the acts, rather than fantasizing about them.” And that he “engaged in mutual masturbation and oral sex with two male patients on different occasions during therapy sessions, and once had anal intercourse with one of them in his office.” A crucified Stormtrooper has caused controversy at the Anglican church it's displayed in A crucified Stormtrooper was on display as the centerpiece of a stations of the cross art exhibit at a London Anglican church. Once church members saw this, they got pretty upset. The artist explained it as “I like to think of it as a New Hope - such as in the new Star Wars film, where John Boyega rebels against the dark side and fights for something good.” He was also hoping to raise awareness about his brother who has been missing since 2003. After a priest arrived to investigate and met with the artist and upset parishioners they agreed to move the Stormtrooper from the front of the church to the back of a hallway. Linda Harvey blames homosexuality on God's punishment of society for abortion Update on Boise priest's charges We have an update on retired Boise priest Thomas Faucher. Additional charges have been filed and his bailed was raised from a quarter of a million dollars to a full $1,000,000. He failed to secure the bail and has been booked in the Ada County jail. Not only did he possess and share large amounts of child porn, but more than 2000 of the images and videos depicted kids getting raped and some showed the torture and murder of children, adults, and animals. More important is that fact that two people have gone to the prosecutors with allegations that he sexually abused them as children. Today's episode welcomes back one of our favorite guests -- and the show's only three-time guest, Andrew Seidel, attorney with the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Together, Andrew, Andrew, and Thomas tackle a bunch of church and state separation issues. First, they break down Andrew Seidel's recent success in convincing the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject their most unqualified judges, Jeff Mateer and Brett Talley. Then, the gang does a deep dive into the oral arguments in the Masterpiece Cakeshop hate-bakery case. After that, Andrew Seidel gives us his take on a new Christian right-wing lobbying group co-founded by Gordon Klingenschmitt. Finally, we end with the answer to Thomas (and Andrew!) Take The Bar Exam question #54 about witness statements and overlapping privilege. Don't forget to following our Twitter feed (@Openargs) and like our Facebook Page so that you too can play along with #TTTBE! Recent Appearances Andrew was just a guest on Episode 75 of The Science Enthusiast podcast and Episode 229 of the Atheist Nomads podcast. Give 'em a listen! Show Notes & Links We broke down the Masterpiece Cakeshop case in Episode 105, and you can follow along with the guys by reading the transcript of the Masterpiece Cakeshop oral argument before the Supreme Court! If you love Andrew Seidel, you might want to go back to his previous appearances on the show, Episode 82 (on Trinity Lutheran), Episode 85 (which was originally a Patreon-only exclusive), and Episode 111. And if that's still not enough Andrew for you, you can catch up on Andrew Seidel's most recent writings: his op-ed on Masterpiece Cakeshop, which you can read here; his blog post on right-wing legal organizations; and, of course, his FFRF press release celebrating the victory in keeping Mateer and Talley off the federal bench. Today's episode talks about the disastrous wildfires that have ravaged Thomas's home state of California, and who winds up footing the bills for these disasters. It's exactly as much insurance law as you wanted to learn! First, we begin with some news items, including an update on the Net Neutrality vote, a new mega-merger, and the Supreme Court's denial of certiorari in Evans v. Georgia Regional Hospital, a case we discussed back in Episode 112. After the main segment, Andrew and Thomas also update on the pending tax bill and some other items in the news. Finally, we end with an all-new Thomas Takes the Bar Exam Question #54 about witness statements and overlapping privileges. Remember that you can play along with #TTTBE by retweeting our episode on Twitter or sharing it on Facebook along with your guess. We'll release the answer on next Tuesday's episode along with our favorite entry! Recent Appearances Andrew was just a guest on Episode 229 of the Atheist Nomads podcast; give it a listen! Show Notes & Links We discussed the AT&T/Time Warner merger in OA 128; you can read about the new Disney/Fox merger here. This is the petitioners' brief for cert in Evans, and this is the response brief filed by the hospital. We discussed several provisions of the California Insurance Code, including Section 1861.05 ("Proposition 103" that prohibits rate hikes); Section 2032 (a consumer protection provision); and Section 2071 (standard form fire insurance policy). My guest for today is Mel Rice, operations manager for the Normalize Atheism Campaign. The Normalize Atheism Campaign was created by Mark Nebo of Be Secular as a way to destigmatize atheism back in 2014, but recently joined forces with Sincere Kirabo and Steve Shives to reinvigorate it. So today we’re going to talk to Mel about the campaign, her role there, and her backstory. As a head’s up, part of Mel’s story involves being a domestic violence survivor, so listener discretion is advised. So today we’re going to talk about her life and her work.Links:•Urban Slender Loris Project: http://www.urbanslenderlorisproject.org/ •Think Stephtically: https://www.youtube.com/user/ThinkingStephtically •ReasonCon 3: http://reasonnc.com/ •The Podunk Polymath: https://thepodunkpolymath.com/ •Atheist Nomads: http://www.atheistnomads.com/ •The Biskeptical Podcast: http://www.spreaker.com/show/the-biskeptical-podcast•Dream Youth: http://dreamyouth.bandcamp.com •Asher Silberman: http://www.ashersilberman.com/ •My Twitter: http://twitter.com/tmamone •Bi Any Means on Twitter: http://twitter.com/bianymeanspod •Bi Any Means on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bianymeanspodcast •The Bi Any Means/Biskeptical Podcast Fans Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/179617892470906/ •Email: bianymeanspodcast@gmail.com •Listener line: 410-690-3558 •My Patreon page: http://www.patreon.com/tmamone •Bi Any Means Blog: http://freethoughtblogs.com/bianymeans/

Show notes can be found here: http://tparkatheist.blogspot.com/2016/12/episode-0131-judith-gets-naked.html Once again, I'm joined by Dustin, as well as his wife Lauren, from the Atheist Nomads podcast, and we tackle more of the Book of Judith. As you can tell from the title, things are picking up with the Book of Judith.
Okay, I once again want to thank everyone for their support after the loss of Houdini. I really appreciate it, it made it possible for me to get through this difficult time. This episode is an update on how I, and Fuzznuts, are doing, followed by my recounting of what happened at the Sumner County Democratic Party's Christmas Party that I attended. I'll be pushing out the Apocrypha episode I recorded with Dustin and Lauren, from the Atheist Nomads podcast later on this week.
Show notes for the episode can be found here: http://tparkatheist.blogspot.com/2016/12/episode-0129-whos-this-judith-chick.html This week, I'm joined by Dustin from the Atheist Nomads podcast, and we crawl through a couple of chapters of Judith. Dustin actually knows a little bit about the subject, having studied it in seminary school, but even he's a bit lost at times.
Welcome to another edition of TPPP! This week, I welcome a new patron, Daylin. I also talk about my appearance on The Atheist Nomads' Light The Night Streamthon, which was a lot of fun.I then do a little ramblin' on the pre-ramble, on which I talk about two more Black men being killed because of officers with itchy trigger fingers. All the while football fans in Tennessee are burning couches because of a win, and, of course, that's just all harmless fun! For the palaver this week I have a friend of mine on, Jason Comeau aka Pastor Jay, to talk about disagreements in our community and how the ability to hash these differences out amicably seems to have been lost to some extent. We also talk about how different types of personalities, specifically activists and those who don't have that skillset, can communicate without resorting to name calling. I think we had a difficult conversation that is too rarely discussed, and I think you will enjoy the insights even if you may not necessarily agree with the conclusions. Thank y'all for stopping by once again, and I hope you enjoy it. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash
