In this series finale informed by Mark Feldmeir's book, Life After God, we take a look at stages of faith development and what motivates us to embrace faith in the first place. We also consider what happens after we die and what hope we have related to our faith.
What do we do with mystical experiences? How do they fit with our tradition, with reason?
Despite what you have ben told, while God does love you, God does not have a plan for your life. God does love you, but has more of a vision or a dream of what life can be. Not one way, but a broad range of ways that are guided by the shalom of God. And, great news! God supports you and I toward this vision even if we veer off course.
This teaching, informed by Mark Feldmeir's book, Life After God, has us take a look at how we view God's power, which affects how we engage God. Is God an all-powerful being who commands or more relationally-oriented, inviting all creation forward?
Enjoy the first week of the Life After God series, where we wonder what the role of doubt plays in the experience of faith. This series is informed by Mark Feldmeir's book by the same name.
Churches and individuals are facing a time of division and uncertainty, as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, political discord, and changing beliefs about God. In this episode, Mark Feldmeir delves into the realities of leading a progressive congregation in a conservative community, the innovative responses to the pandemic, and the denominational shifts within Methodism. Mark also shares insights from his book, 'Life After God,' which explores finding faith when one can't believe anymore. He discusses the need for a new way of thinking about God and the importance of embracing the complexities of life. Mark Feldmeir is the author of five books, including his latest work, Life after God: Finding Fath When You Can't Believe Anymore. He has served on the Adjunct Faculty at Claremont School of Theology, where he has taught homiletics, and has spoken at various conferences throughout the country on topics ranging from preaching, politics, and pop culture. He currently serves as Lead Pastor at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In this insightful sermon, Pat draws lessons from the life of David, exploring the reality of the "Promised Land" experience. Despite entering a season of promise and blessing, David faced unresolved tensions, challenges, and battles, much like our own lives. The message encourages us to find peace not in the absence of problems but in the presence of God, who equips us to navigate the challenges of the Promised Land. Through personal stories and scripture, this sermon offers wisdom on embracing God's peace, cultivating resilience, and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. | Scripture | 1 Samuel 22 2 Samuel 7:9 Psalm 23 Psalm 27
We were created for God's presence, but often fill the sacred spaces meant for Him with distractions and noise. We can experience personal revival any day by earnestly pursuing God's presence through seeking Him; dwelling with Him; inquiring of Him; gazing on Him – praising Him. Only when we give Him this, do we witness the fullness of his presence and power. | Scripture | 2 Chronicles 5
King David's story illustrates how hidden sins can quietly take root in our hearts and grow over time to hurt many people. This sermon challenges us to examine areas where we may be complacent, reminding us that sacrifice and commitment are essential to walk in God's blessing, and invites thoughtful reflection about nurturing a kingdom mentality that prioritises God's values over comfort or convenience. | Scripture | 1 Chronicles 21
In this sermon, Pat unpacks principles from David's darkest hour that equipped him for breakthrough. Through David's story, the sermon challenges us to develop a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity, to stand courageously for what's right as “thermostats” with authority from Christ, to generously value people over things, and to commit ourselves to a tribe that shares our kingdom values for which we're willing to fight. If you ever feel stuck in hardship, rejection, or crisis, this sermon will revolutionise how you respond. Be encouraged, challenged and inspired to live a life after God's own heart! || Scripture || 1 Samuel 30
Learning to live by spiritual values that recognise God's presence, control, and purposes, will bring the freedom, courage, and strength required to follow Him in all of life's circumstances. || Scripture || 1 Samuel 24:2-19
In a cultural moment of change and uncertainty, it's easy to compromise our convictions out of fear. But in this Sermon from the life of King David, Pastor Pat reminds us that courage comes from having faith and living by our values, not the absence of fear. When we align our lives with God's agenda, anything is possible. || Scripture || 1 Samuel 17:4-47 1 Samuel 13:13-14
This week Mark Feldmeir stops by the show to talk to us about his book "Life After God" and what it looks like to find faith when the God you were handed growing up can't stand up against the questions you have as an adult. The understanding of God that many Christians insist is so clear in the Bible makes faith seem like an all-or-nothing proposition. When much of that rigid projection seems in doubt, it's not surprising that many people leave behind this take-it-or-leave-it religion. This week I am joined by Mark Feldmeir to discuss his new book "Life After God: Finding Faith When You Can't Believe Anymore". What do we do when our image of God is no longer viable? Mark asks all the big theological questions and provides a beautiful, constructive way forward. Life after God offers glimpses of the ineffable God, who can emerge when we forget what we think we're supposed to believe about God and open us up to the mystery, wonder, and compelling love we crave. This was easily one of my favorite books I have read in a long time. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Resources: Life After God (Book) MarkFeldmeir.Com
Punching People in the Throat. In 1995 we recorded our fourth album Kitten Licks. The recording took place at Rocking Horse Studio outside of Byron Bay, and it rained solidly for 13 of the 14 days we were there. Kellie reads from her diaries about the rain, and about everything else; our new drummer Dean, our producer Paul McKercher, and the excitement surrounding our new batch of songs.1995 was a big year for us, we had a line-up change and got Dean Shwereb in the band. This was a massive deal, his drumming changed everything for us; our approach to songwriting, our practice routine and even the songs themselves. We felt a huge creative freedom.Dean also brought a crazy new level of fun and humour to the band - we try to explain his "unusual" mind, and tell the story of how he got his nickname Rat Beef.Tim explains that a lot of the lyrics and song titles on the record were blatantly stolen from various places: books, films, and other bands' records and songs.Kitten Licks changed us forever. We wrote the songs in a new, fast and spontaneous way, throwing ideas around in the practice room together, where anyone was encouraged to step up to the mic and “sing any old shit”.Take a peek inside preceding months as we worked the songs up, the two rainy weeks we spent in the studio, and hear the inside dirt on all the songs.See below for all the places we've stolen from, as well as others we were heavily influenced by:Martin Amis: London Fields, also: Money and other early 90s booksDouglas Coupland: Shampoo Planet, also: Life After God.Neal Stephenson: Snow CrashLiz Phair: Shane (song, on Whipsmart)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsEvv237rGU Win Wenders: Until the End of the World - filmDream Whip fanzineRegurgitator: Blubber Boy Hosted on Acast. What is secular grace? Do you need religion to be moral? What happens after you no longer believe? David Ames is the pioneer of the “secular grace” movement, the host of The Graceful Atheist podcast, and the organizer of his Deconversion Anonymous group. In 2015, David lost his Christian faith after 27 years of ministry, which started his de-conversion journey to find grace in secularism. As shared on his website, David states, “I could no longer sustain belief. It seemed to me the deeper I dug for truth in my beliefs the shakier they became. In contrast, the deeper I dug for truth in science and reason the more profound it became.” You can expect to learn about deconversion from christianity, the rise of scientism, why healthy skepticism is needed, life after God, how loneliness is the root of depression, and how to approach faith and belief difference. Doubt can be the purest form of belief. Disbelief can be the surest path to our salvation. Running from faith can be the most honest expression of running toward God. No one ever told us this. So some of us stopped believing altogether. Assuming there's only one way to believe in God, or only one kind of God to believe in, some choose to live life after God. But what if we were misled? What if living life after a God we can't believe in has freed us to live life in pursuit of a God we were never told about—One who cares less about what we believe, and more about how we're doing, who we're becoming, where we're going, and what we're giving our precious lives to? What if the real God is waiting for us on the other side of life after God?

On this episode I speak with my friend Brian Peck about the importance of taking a trauma-informed approach to treating what he calls adverse religious experiences. Rather than merely pathologizing religion, Brian suggests that we recognize the reality of religious abuse and then focus on treating trauma using the best evidence-based practice. "Religious abuse is what happened to you," he says. "Trauma is your body's response to the abuse."This is a conversation I've been wanting to have with Brian for months. It's finally here. Please let me know what you think by writing to me at ryan@lifeaftergod.org.Brian earned a Master’s of Social Work degree from Boise State University and completed the required post-graduate supervision and training to gain clinical licensure. On this episode of the podcast I speak with Yale professor of comparative literature and humanities, Martin Hägglund, about his new book, "This Life: Secular Faith and Spiritual Freedom."Unlike any book I've ever read before, Martin weaves together a secular understanding of life that is rooted in our necessarily fragile, temporal existence, with the logical outcome of this understanding of secular life in our social and political lives. In, "This Life," Hägglund argues that the social form of our life must embrace this fragility and move on to realize deeper emancipation for all.Buy and read the book: https://www.amazon.com/This-Life-Secular-Spiritual-Freedom/dp/1101870400/Follow Martin Hägglund on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/martinhaegglundRead Jedediah Purdy's review in The New Republic: https://newrepublic.com/article/153024/spiritual-case-socialism-martin-hagglund-book-reviewBecome a supporter of the show: www.patreon.com/lifeaftergodVisit the Life After God website: http://www.lifeaftergod.orgFollow up on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ourlifeaftergodFollow us on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/ourlifeaftergodFollow us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ourlifeaftergod

My goal with these conversations is to offer you a diverse range of perspectives, share practical insights you can use in your daily life, and introduce you to some amazing humans who are committed to helping others thrive after leaving religion. My name is Brian Peck, and I'm a licensed clinical social worker in Boise Idaho specializing in religious trauma and mental health challenges related to the deconversion process.Today I'm excited to introduce you to Suandria Hall who is a licensed mental health professional in the Denver area who also specializes in religious trauma and helping people navigate life transitions including support for leaving high-demand religious groups.I met Suandria online through her Instagram account, My Choice My Power, which is also the name of her private practice in the Denver area. I was struck by her thoughtful reflections on mental health and her keen insight into the process of exiting religion. It's been a real honor to learn from her experience and hope you find this conversation as meaningful as I did.My goal for these episodes is to expand the conversation about post-religious mental health that includes a range of clinical voices, therapy modalities, and practices you can incorporate into your healing process. You may be surprised to learn that there's a growing number of mental health professionals out there already doing this work. As therapists, we often work with the individual, and what's said in the room stays in the room. These episodes are an opportunity to share what we're learning and to provide some psychoeducational content to support your journey.Note, these conversations are intended to be educational in nature and are in no way a substitute for working with your own licensed mental health professional or healthcare provider. As with any conversation that may reactivate past trauma, please put your needs first. This particular conversation is not graphic, but the topic and content may still be challenging for some nervous systems. Healing trauma is a dynamic process, and it's perfectly okay to step back and reengage once you have more resources available to you.**SPECIAL OFFER**Join the Life After God community as a Member between now and June 21, 2019, and receive a limited edition magnet. On this episode I speak with Alana Carter, a senior at Nazareth College, about her experience of loss and grief as a post-theist. Then I talk with Garrett Price, a mental health professional working in end-of-life care, about what is happening in grief and how to face it as an atheist. The question I get more than any other is how to face death as an atheist. Whether it is the death of a loved one or ones own death, the prospect of mortality is one of the main things that keeps religion thriving in our world. Likewise, understanding grief and how to face it as an atheist is essential for a vibrant life after God.Become of member of the Life After God community and help make this podcast possible.
