In part two of their chat, Eric shares practical insights on leading effective meetings, creating grassroots culture change, and the power of listening, mentoring, and simplicity in leadership. In this episode, Clint has a conversation with Eric Stone, former Enterprise Holdings executive, founder & CEO of Clear Path Ventures, and author of the award-winning book, “Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture.” During their discussion, Eric defines what workplace culture really means, how to create a sense of accountability without fear, and why attitude, effort, and coachability are the core traits of high-performing teams. Plus, Eric explains his signature “hourglass” model for leading culture change. This is the first part of a two-part conversation.
Creating Thriving Work Environments Eric and I dove into the essentials of workplace culture, a topic central to our careers. Eric shared his journey from a childhood fascination with business to leading large teams at Enterprise Rent-a-Car. His book on company culture and high performance has become a key resource for his speaking and consulting work. We explored what it takes to create work environments where employees don't just survive—they thrive. It all starts with strong relationships, clear communication, and understanding the diverse needs of a multigenerational workforce. Setting clear expectations is critical, especially in today's workplace, where retention is a growing challenge. When organizations prioritize culture and communication, they see stronger engagement and long-term success. Effective Communication and Planning for Success Our discussion also highlighted the role of communication and strategic planning in driving results. I shared a case from my time at Mercedes-Benz, where we implemented an asset-tracking system to streamline operations. The key takeaway? Getting things right the first time prevents unnecessary work and improves efficiency. Eric echoed this with his experience launching a content initiative for sales, emphasizing the importance of a steady, intentional approach to culture-building. We also tackled a critical hiring insight—focusing on a candidate's match rather than just their fit within an organization. Engaged employees who align with company values will consistently outperform those who check the right boxes. His book profoundly covers these themes, offering practical strategies for building high-performing teams. Hiring for Potential and Career Growth One story that stood out was hiring a receptionist without prior healthcare experience. Over time, she thrived, earned a promotion, and eventually ran a clinic. It reinforced the idea that hiring should be about potential rather than just experience. Eric and I agreed that asking the right questions during hiring is essential in identifying high-potential candidates. Too often, employers focus on filling a position quickly rather than considering a candidate's long-term career trajectory. Investing in people's growth benefits both the individual and the organization. Connecting Beyond the Conversation We wrapped up by discussing ways to keep the conversation going and share the episode when it's live. On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, Tacey welcomes back Eric Stone, the founder of ClearPath Ventures and author of "Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture. A Roadmap for Igniting High Performance." Eric delves deep into the essence of workplace culture and high performance, shedding light on the principles that can lead organizations toward success. The heart of the conversation focuses on defining company culture. Eric mentions that culture is essential "behaviours in action"—the alignment between stated values and actual organizational behaviours. This distinction is crucial as we explore how culture can significantly influence an organization's ability to execute its strategies effectively. Eric emphasizes that a company's culture can only be assessed by observing behaviours when leadership isn't present, highlighting the true character of an organization's environment. We touch upon the importance of getting "in the trenches" with teams—a practice Eric advocates for to gain valuable insights that might otherwise go unnoticed. He lays out three key practices: listening, observing, and learning. This approach helps leaders connect with their teams and creates a feedback loop that strengthens the organization's culture. He stresses that the clarity of mission, vision, and core values must guide every decision made within an organization. One of the standout discussions is around overcoming obstacles within workplace culture, where Eric introduces the idea of being a "distraction catcher." He explains that successful leaders must buffer their teams from unnecessary noise, enabling them to focus on achieving key initiatives. Eric's wealth of knowledge and experience equips listeners with actionable strategies for cultivating vibrant workplace cultures. His insights reinforce the idea that a customer-centric culture is beneficial for clients and integral to internal success, urging leaders to create environments that inspire and empower their teams. "Clear beats clever, yet we're still incentivising clever in organisations… “A brilliant conversation with Eric about creating the conditions for both performance and people to thrive. We delve into the different parts of this journey to build a culture that enables performance. The acronym LoL—listen, observe, learn— highlights the importance of engaging with employees and clients to understand their challenges beyond financial metrics. We also discuss the importance of personal interactions, that are vital for building trust, particularly in the digital age. A human-centric strategy and cultural resilience are crucial for navigating crises, and being intentional with our actions to build relationships, communicate effectively and take people with us on this journey is important to building a new way of thinking, acting and being. We all suffer from complexity bias, and the importance of clarity over complexity has never been more pressing, as we look to lead with empathy, streamline messages and enhance focus.Eric generously shares his stories, experience and operational tips from his career and from working with leaders across the five generations. The main insights you'll get from this episode are : - Starting from a fascination with leadership from an early age, through business school, and working for a company that enabled personal growth resulted in a message of impact to pass on in the form of a book.- Based on the notion that ‘simple' plans are not necessarily simplistic to implement, the book offers anecdotes and practical tips for hands-on operationalisation for leaders as the mechanic for the car, and whose people are the vehicle for the journey.- LOL – listen, observe and learn – as a foundation for strategy to obtain different opinions to give a new view of how best to act, thanks to a diversity of perspective - no one is ever smarter than the room even if they are the smartest person in the room.- Observing behaviours and action is the simplest definition of culture. Visiting with and talking to people builds trust – a roadmap is not a new idea, but without the human element it is just directions, and leadership must navigate both the path and the people.- The ‘velvet hammer' approach refers to the relationship between people and performance – leaders must truly listen, observe and learn, make people feel special, but also give them accountability, balancing head and heart.- Clear beats clever, despite this not being the paradigm in most organisations. Clarity can be achieved through simplicity to overcome complexity bias - complex does not mean better, and improvement does not mean adding to.- It is much better to master the basics than trying to be too clever; leaders are overwhelmed with information and excuses are introduced – far better is to avoid the noise and be a ‘distraction catcher'.- The abc of communication: know when to amplify a message, buffer it, and convey it. To embed this in a culture successfully and sustainably requires feedback, time management, the definition of priorities, and difficult conversations.- Cultural resilience is about equipping people to have conversations in the workplace and about having an intentional approach to everything e.g. stay interviews. It acts as a shock absorber when bad news strikes, by building a solution mindset.- A ‘check under the hood' process allows for the tangible measurement of culture by asking questions, obtaining data,

From an entry level position at Enterprise Rental Car spanning over two and a half decades when he left the company as the Regional Vice President, Eric Stone learned a thing or two about CULTURE. Through engagement and other key steps, you create Culture Carriers. Look at: Time Management and Eisenhower's grid demarcations of Delegate, Do, Defer, or Delete Hiring Practices to include focusing on attitude, effort, and coachability Hold regular meetings to highlight desired outcomes, then back fill the calendar with times for training and review. Remember that beliefs lead to behaviors. Identify your priorities and keep them in front of your team members. Remember that 40% of your team don't actually know what's expected of them. In exploring corporate culture, investigate the gap between Values and Behavior. Whether working in-office, remotely, or hybrid, there are five factors of engagement that need to be focused on: Relationship with the manager Understanding of requirements Having and utilizing the proper tools and tech Personal and Professional Development Reward systems Because there's no pressure relief for those working remotely (and hybrid/remote), the stress and anger felt on one day could well carry over to the next day. Leaders need to be the pressure-relief and support. Calendar time for engagement; that's the core of leadership Explore, “What works? And what can we do better?” Measure workplace culture via: Engagement Experience Ethics & Behavior balanced against Values Sales Retention Growth FRAMEWORK of the Hourglass Discovery - pull information Orchestrate - formulate and roll out priorities Training Assessment & Measurement Balance Mission, Vision, and Values against Policies and Procedures Find Eric Stone on Linked In and Instagram (ClearPathVentures_) and pick up his book Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture wherever books are sold!

Initially, it was believed that Winslow had been trapped under the SUV, but further investigation clarified that the SUV's driver had stopped to inspect the damage before leaving the site. The unfortunate event transpired when Winslow attempted to cross the highway. Johnson's motorcycle hit her, causing her to be thrown into the westbound lanes. The case continues to be under scrutiny by local authorities. STORY 3: Cobb Sheriff Recognized for 'Triple Crown' Accreditation Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens recently received recognition at the Georgia Senate for a significant achievement by his office. The Cobb Sheriff's Office now stands among an exclusive group of 100 sheriff's offices across the nation and only five in Georgia to have attained this honor. Owens underscored the critical role of professionalism in law enforcement during his remarks. He generously attributed this accomplishment to his devoted staff, whose efforts have materially elevated the agency's standards and services, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Cobb County. In this episode of the Customers First Podcast, Tacey is joined by Eric Stone, founder of ClearPath Ventures and author of "Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture: A Roadmap for Igniting High Performance." We discuss the importance of aligning values and behaviors in workplace culture, debunking the myth that it's solely an HR function. We explore communication, measuring culture, and the role of "culture carriers." We touch on remote work challenges and the shifting workplace culture landscape. He refutes the common misconception that workplace culture is a vague and ambiguous concept and points out that a workplace culture's foundation is employees' behaviours and actions, with no gap between the company values and the actions that follow. Stone's book, Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture, provides a step-by-step guide for organizations to create a culture that fosters high performance and productivity by implementing effective communication strategies while creating a sense of purpose and belonging among employees, and setting up a system of recognition and rewards to incentivize great work. Employee engagement in customer interactions, though members' actions and behaviours shape a workplace's culture, and successful organizations demonstrate a seamless alignment between their stated values and actual behaviours. Building employee engagement is predicated on clear communication of expectations and objectives, comprehensive training and coaching, and regular recognition of effort and achievement. Engaged employees drive positive outcomes such as improved customer service, higher retention rates, increased profitability, and business expansion. All leaders must possess effective communication skills, including the ability to amplify, buffer, and convey messages. Measuring workplace culture can be achieved through various methods such as pulse surveys, engagement surveys, and a six-point inspection that encompasses employee engagement, customer experience, understanding of company values, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. A strong focus on inclusivity is pivotal to building a diverse and thriving workforce. To build a high-performance culture, Eric shared that it is essential to start with employee engagement and utilize visual methods, such as the hourglass approach, to gather information, set priorities, and reinforce consistent behaviours. The organization can create a roadmap for success while recognizing and rewarding the individuals who inspire and lead others. It's essential to develop culture carriers who become the region's voice and spread the message to scale the culture organization-wide. These individuals can help reinforce the company culture's values, beliefs, and behaviours. These culture carriers don't necessarily have to be in leadership positions, but they need to earn the respect of others by embodying the organization's values and always doing the right thing. Eric's closes with encouraging listeners to check out his book and upcoming workbook and audiobook. "Culture is this catalyst to execution and getting a group of people to achieve the uncommon, unleashing people's true potential," says Eric Stone. In this episode of the Authentic Change Podcast, Mike Horne welcomes Eric Stone, a seasoned leader with a special track record for creating high-performance cultures. With a 26-year career at Enterprise Holdings, one of North America's largest privately held companies, Eric shares his insights on what it takes to connect with and motivate employees from all generations and demographics to create exceptional results. In his new book, "Jumpstart Your Workplace Culture: A Roadmap for Igniting High Performance," Eric shares practical strategies for creating a strong and engaging culture. He emphasizes the importance of aligning personal and company values, selecting employees based on character, and providing clear goals and expectations. Eric also highlights the significance of employee training, development, recognition, and empowerment in avoiding burnout and fostering memorable customer experiences. His experiences and insights inspire listeners to embrace their values, develop strong relationships with their teams, and create a culture that drives high performance and success. Quotes: "I look at culture as this catalyst to execution and getting a group of people to achieve the uncommon, unleashing people's true potential." (9:05 | Eric Stone) "So how do you get people to avoid burnout? Well, if you create strong relationships with your team and build initiatives from the beginning through their journey, that's one real important thing. If you supply them with the training, the proper development, the information and equipment, and to get that desired outcome, that's going to be very helpful. If you truly get to develop them personally and professionally, that's important. If you're very clear in communicating your goals and expectations, that's important. And you want to be able to recognize and reward excellence. And when you package those together, the importance of the training one really overlaps a lot of them. And most people tend to get burnt out when they really are in an unknown. They get anxious, frustrated, disengaged when they don't know where they are, where they're standing, or they're getting no guidance. I truly believe people want to do really well. I don't think they show up in corporate America and want to be terrible." (15:02 | Eric Stone) "You know, whatever your grading is, whether it's a one to five, whether it's a 'meets/succeeds', thing is, what does it mean to 'meet'? What are those key things that would be consistent along the ranking system? What does it mean to 'exceed' or to be 'outstanding'? And what are some of those numbers that would lead to an outstanding performance? And so to me, it's just really getting defined. So you're having consistency." For this episode, Kenneth sat down with Eric Stone of Mudhouse Coffee Roasters to talk about the art and science of roasting. They recorded this episode in Boston while competing as finalists to determine who's the best specialty coffee roaster in America. Eric and Kenneth discuss the subject of roasting coffee in-depth including the different types of coffee roasters, how temperature imoacts the roast, the roast curve, halogen roasting, first and second crack, and tipping just to name a few of the subjects covered. They explain how the look, smell and even the noise the beans make when in the roaster at the various stages of the roast impact your cup of coffee. KEY TAKEAWAYS The way your coffee is roasted has about a 30% impact on how it tastes. Small sample roasters are used to evaluate new batches of beans, identify the flavor profile, and manipulate those flavors to create the best overall taste. The same bean, roasted in different ways, can taste extraordinarily different. A new variable in roasting is emerging which uses halogen as the heat source. The roast profile curve is the order in which key stages of the roasting process occur - Kenneth and Eric walk you through this curve. Light roasts are more sensitive to changes in the roasting process than dark roasts. It is particularly important to cool the beans down as fast as possible to stop the cooking process at the right temperature once roasting is complete. The water content and density of the bean have a significant impact on your roast. BEST MOMENTS ‘Our sample drum roaster also has airflow moving through the drum, so you´re roasting with both convection and conduction. ´ ‘There are countless ways you can manipulate the flavor of a coffee.' ‘Once you're past the first crack, if you apply too much heat you run the risk of making some roaster errors.'
