In addition to discussing how this burgeoning cult classic was almost lost due to studio suppression, our hosts delve into how it fundamentally breaks the Judeo-Christian mold of exorcism cinema. Joining the conversation is acclaimed writer and host Sharai Bohannon, who has made it her mission to make sure this film and its heroine finally get their day in the sun. Then, HORROR MOVIE SURVIVAL GUIDE's Teri Gamble stops by to lay down the law on why ABBY is so much more than a knock-off of THE EXORCIST! From Carol Speed to bar room rituals, this episode has it all!Additional Reading: 'Abby' Is More Than Just A Rip-off of 'The Exorcist' by Sharai Bohannon

Jace is joined by filmmaker Julia Marchese to chat about her short-film, I Know What You Need. Made through Stephen King's “Dollar Baby” program, the film is styled as a 1970s after school special and uniquely, was actually shot at the University of Maine, in the exact locations mentioned in the story. The film has played in festivals worldwide, earning more than 15 awards to date. “Dollar Baby” was an arrangement in which iconic author Stephen King would grant permission to students and aspiring filmmakers theater producers to adapt one of his short stories for just $1.King retains the rights to his work, but as he began to experience commercial success, he decided to use his platform to help the next generation of creatives. When the program's overseer retired, the program came to an end, making Marchese one of the final recipients of this generosity. Synopsis: It's 1976, and popular college co-ed Elizabeth (Caroline Renee) meets an unusual boy, Edward (William Champion), who knows what she needs. But who is Edward really, and what secrets is he hiding? It's a love story, but a Stephen King love story, so things aren't always what they seem! Elizabeth doesn't know what she wants, but Edward knows what she needs. Check out the trailer HERE “I Know What You Need” will have its Comic-Con debut at their film festival section on Friday, July 26 at 1:45 PM in Grand Ballroom 6 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis. In addition, it will be added to ArrowPlayer, the streaming home to cult cinema, on Friday, July 12. Marchese is additionally the host on three popular podcasts, Horror Movie Survival Guide, JodoWOWsky and The Loser's Club. She also co-hosts Horror X, a video show collaboration between The George A. Romero Foundation and Horror Movie Survival Guide, celebrating women in horror.

Bryan and Dave are joined by Teri Gamble of the Horror Movie Survival Guide podcast to talk about Disney's bizarro 80's period where they experimented with more mature films resulting in one of their most easily-forgotten titles, The Watcher in the Woods. At one time, Disney producers and executives were convinced that this was going to be their finest hour, a horror movie to rival The Exorcist. Nowadays, if it's remembered at all, it's remembered for not making a whole lot of sense and having been pulled from theaters for extensive reshoots and two endings that had to be thrown out. Much gratitude to Julia Marchese of the Horror Movie Survival Guide and the director and guiding light behind the forthcoming 'Dollar Baby' adaptation of Stephen King's shot story I Know What You Need. Together Julia and I battled technical difficulties (after my interview with Stewart O Nan I think I might be jinxed, or at least have gremlins in the recoding equipment) and we eventually got around to talking about King's cult novella of death, sex and sports, The Long Walk. Julia explained how a book written in the 1960s still reads fresh, and we both marvel at how just darn good that King fellow could write, even as a teenager. Find more about Julia here: - http://www.juliamarchese.com/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/horror-movie-survival-guide/id1260663982 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-know-what-you-need-a-stephen-king-adaptation#/ And a huge thank you to The Long Walk obsessive Pat Coston for his tireless research into the novella, it was invaluable. This episode was hosted by Richard Sheppard, with research and support from Dr Linda Sheppard, and technical and sound production by "The Mad Professor" Stephen L. Parkes. Welcome to Our Black History hosted by Teri Gamble and Dr. Brandon Gamble discussing real stories about real lives - Our Black History! This week have a conversation with one of our favorite teachers...our Dad! Arthur Gamble! He shares some stories about growing up in a predominately white working class town in the midwest and his diaspora to Southern California told through the lens of his educational history. After our first episode, with our mom, so many people wanted to hear his stories, as well. He is a man, literally from the "Silent Generation," so we are honored that he would share his stories and be so candid with us. From his work as a tutor in high school - he has had a focus on the power of education to change and enrich lives. Welcome to Our Black History hosted by Teri Gamble and Dr. Brandon Gamble discussing real stories about real lives - Our Black History! This week we have a conversation with our inspiration...our Mom! Carrie Gamble! She shares some stories and insights about growing up in Jim Crow south and about the power of education and advocacy in peoples lives. This whole podcast started as she shared some of her stories she had recently written for church with us that we felt were too good to keep to ourselves. She has a unique perspective that we hope will illuminate fresh insights for others. Excerpt from Carrie's MLK Writing: It was Good Friday, April 12, 1968, the day that Art and I got married. However, that was not the most significant event that occurred that April. On April 4, 1968, just 8 days prior, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and died an hour later as the results of an assassin's bullet. This man who was born on January 15, 1929, at 39 years young was gone from a world that he impacted in a way that few men in history have ever done. Knowing how brilliant he was, he could have chosen to do any profession to make a lot of money, yet he chose to serve the Negro nation in this country... Listen to the podcast to hear more! Suzanne Desrocher-Romero is the founder and president of the George A. Romero Foundation and was married to George Romero from 2011 until his passing in 2017. Suzanne is working hard to preserve George's legacy by archiving his work, and opening an archive specifically for horror directors at the University of Pittsburgh. The foundation is also releasing a lost film Romero directed in 1973, The Amusement Park, which Teri and Julia were lucky enough to be able to watch and talk to Suzanne about in this interview. Horror Movie Survival Guide feels honored to be able to talk about this incredible unseen Romero film, and also about his spectacular life and career. This week, we're capturing a caper on celluloid as we welcome Julia Marchese, filmmaker of the acclaimed documentary OUT OF PRINT and host of HORROR MOVIE SURVIVAL GUIDE! Among other things, Julia discusses her origins as a blood-soaked scream queen, her mission to teach the world about the importance of film preservation, and why she equates being a gorehound with riding a roller coaster!
Horror Movie Survival Guide leaps into modern horror with 2017's Happy Death Day, a super fun horror movie take on Groundhog's Day - when Tree is murdered, but wakes up again in the same day - she realizes she has unlimited chances to solve her own death.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
On this episode we welcome a new horror survival protegé, Teri Gamble, into the Horror Movie Survival Guide fold. Julia and Teri dive into the classic, Stanley Kubrick's, The Shining. Surprisingly, Teri had never seen this film and it wasn't in Julia's horror movie notebook. Kubrick's masterpiece in madness follows the Torrance family as they become the winter caretakers of the Overlook Hotel, a haunted house if there ever was one. Stephen King's story give rich material for Kubrick to play with, and the performances from Nicholson and Duvall are truly astounding. A film that proves that horror can also be art!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
Tod Browning's follow up to Dracula is a film that feels as fresh, modern and horrifying today as it did in 1932. Following the loves and losses of circus folk backstage, this movie reels you in and doesn't let go until the ghastly finale. We also say goodbye to our lovely Marion as she moves on from Horror Movie Survival Guide. But, this does enable Julia to corrupt another victim into her den of horrors. Bwhaahaahaahaahaaaaaa.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: On today's episode, we slide down the mysterious rabbit hole that is the barren reality of the cast of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. We discuss failed reality shows, struggling music careers, and Shay Mitchell's interesting type-cast of "That Lesbian Chick." Also, we honor and celebrate our favorite celebrity couple: Danberly. That is Kimberly J. Brown and Daniel Koutz of Halloweentown fame.
A low budget horror film that feels like a higher budget film solely on the quality of the actors involved - John Heard, Kim Griest, a bombastic Daniel Stern, and even a cameo by a baby faced John Goodman! This film puts the grit in gritty 80's New York City, oh and did I mention there are cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers involved?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
Julia, Marion, and producer Teri wish all you horror movie survivalists a happy 2019! Thanks for listening and we will keep bringing you horror movie survival tips and trivia in the new year!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
Little monsters indeed. This film is a confusing mess, but hey! At least there's a ghoulie on the VHS cover coming out of a toilet wearing suspenders!* (*no actual ghoulie suspender wearing occurs in this film) Plus - Jack Nance!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
Stephen Herek's 1986 creature feature is full of silliness, gore, intergalactic bounty hunters and Billy Zane with an earring/ponytail. When the crites hijack a spaceship and hightail it to Earth, they didn't expect to face off against the plucky Scott Grimes and Dee Wallace Stone! Fine little monster fun! Starting our round of sequels is 1981's Halloween 2, notable for starting the EXACT second the first one ends and finishing up Michael's long, bloody night of carnage candy in an abandoned hospital, with Dr. Loomis hot on his heels, and newcomer (and Horror Movie Survival Guide favorite) Jimmy hot for Laurie - what will happen on the rest of the night he came home?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/HorrorMovieSurvivalGuide)
