    When Values and Performance Collide

    As an aspiring athlete in sports and life, you probably don't know all of your values just yet.   What are values?  Well, by definition, a value is a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life. We have values in sports and we have value in our lives too.  We have values on the field of play (often reinforced by the rules in the rule book and ‘unwritten' rules that are also understood by competitors).   We also have values outside the field of play.  (i.e. you're willing to do this but not that) Of the athletes and families I work with, most of them are on this magic carpet ride of sport.  They are whizzing along assuming that the journey to athletic greatness will be value-challenging-free. But that's not often the case. It is said that it's better to know your values before you get into a difficult situation, but oftentimes you don't know what your values truly are until you get there.   This is a complicated topic that doesn't have an easy answer because every situation is fluid. The important thing is to have your head up and your eyes downfield, prepared for an unusual situation that may put you, or your family, in a difficult situation. It's important to understand that at some point, values and performance, will collide.  It may happen early, it may happen late.  It will definitely happen at the end of your athletic career.  Until that point, stay psychologically flexible.   Enjoy!  And be sure to hit the

    Jon Feinman is a cool dude. I first found out about him watching an ESPN video that got me so riveted I watched it twice. As someone who’s been in and around the world of strength and conditioning as an athlete, and then as a business, I know how hard it is to be in that business but how cool it is when you know you’re making an impact. Jon’s story is awesome. From his bio: Jon founded ICW in 2010, building upon his experience in Americorps and as a personal trainer. As CEO, he is focused on aligning the vision, strategy, culture, and growth of ICW to flip power dynamics, bridge social capital, and amplify the voice and agency of people who have been most impacted by mass incarceration and systemic racism.     11/365 Are You Wasting Time Pursuing Your Sport   When it comes to pursuing your athletic dreams you are going to run into resistance.  The resistance that is easy to identify will be your competitors.  They may also be your teammates in a weird sort of way.  But the act of “competing” is what actually makes you better.  You accept the challenge of putting yourself in positions to be humiliated, but you learn from that, regroup, and try again. It’s a lot of work.  A lot of time and effort. But is it worth it? I am here to tell you that even if this whole “sport” thing doesn’t work out for you (meaning, you don’t reach your ultimate goal) the lessons you learn along the way are well worth it.  There is no debate there. Here are just a few of the life skills you will learn pursuing your sport: How to push through your body’s limits to find new limits. Dealing with people you like AND people you don’t. Managing mechanical equipment. Dealing with limited resources (time, energy, money, etc) Managing your emotions Maximizing your physical ability and it’s limitations Dealing with negative media And much more.     When Did Being Competitive Become a Bad Thing?

    Willpower fatigue is a scientific principle that tells us that the willpower that we have is just like the gas tank in a car.  It may begin the day full of mental energy but over time, it slowly diminishes and begins to run out, leaving us vulnerable to making poor decisions. When our goals are defined and our vision is clear then our brain helps us stay on track because of some very pesky neurons in our brain.  Similar to a bouncer at a club, these neurons keep us on track so we reach our goals sooner, and with more energy.     Parkinson’s Law: Why You And Your Athlete Are Wasting Time Parkinson’s Law states that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” It’s pretty straightforward: If you give yourself a year to finish something, it will take a year. If you give yourself a month, you’ll take a month. If you give yourself a day, it will take a day. When you understand this law you can strategically apply it and cut the ridiculous amount of time some things can take you. Most people don’t put timelines on activities at all. We are great at scheduling appointments but not ending them, as one example. So if we leave things open-ended then we will let a project drag on and on and on. That’s why boses make lunchtime one hour because they know if it was open-ended you would never come back!

    As a goalie in every sport I played and an Olympian in a timed event...I'm impatient.  I just want to know what I need to do so I can just do it.  But sometimes we can take it too far.  The speeds are too fast.  The athletes are too big.  The challenge too complicated.  This is where the magic happens because you just need to back off a bit when things get tough.  The ceiling of performance is really unlimited if you just allow it and be smart about how you progress.

    I remember when I went to the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York and quickly noticed how being an "olympian" was kinda old news. It was no big deal.  Everyone knew an Olympian or was one!  Training to go the Olympics wasn't a big deal either.  If you got up at 5AM to train, good for you.  It happened all the time.     You Can't Change The Game

      Download This Episode To You Device When it comes to your sport only the elite of the elite athletes are ever able to truly get the game to change. These are the athletes who are so far advanced physically, technically and tactically that rules need to be changed or else they blow right through them. To be honest we haven't seen games change much over the years with the exception of the sport of golf where tee boxes had to be moved back to make courses longer to make it challenging for todays golf-athletes. For everyone else (athletes and parents included) all discussion of changing the game is usually in an effort to help sub-par athletes succeed or at least feel like they are succeeding. (Participation trophies, anyone?) In today's episode let's talk about How You Can't Change The Game and why you shouldn't even be asking if you truly want to be great at your sport. You Can’t Change The Game Transcript: Hey there, Olympian, Jonathan Edwards here, and welcome to another Athlete Specific podcast.  I hope you enjoyed last week's Issue which was on More is Not a Plan. I always appreciate the comments and I got a lot of emails from people who enjoyed it.  This week I want to talk about how You Can't Change the Game.  It's pretty popular now that there's this kind of understanding or this kind of 'feels good,' 'it's  sentimental,' but it's the idea that we've got to change the game.  Listen, the game's not going to change and what I mean by that is I understand people talk about changing the game and about everything around your sport. It doesn't matter what the sport but people try to change like how crazy it’s gotten and how it's like adults forcing things on kids and how it all needs to change.   Stop Disempowering The Athlete Here's the thing.  If you're discussing changing the game, then you are taking all of the empowerment out of the athlete.  Because the truth is, the game the game. The game has rules. The game has been around for a long time. It doesn't matter what your game is... whether it's soccer, hockey, lacrosse, football, skiing, biathlon, sheep wrestling..  It doesn't matter.   The Game Is The Game The Game is the Game.  It has it's own rules.  So what is our responsibility as an athlete or the people who support an athlete?  It's that we need to help that athlete become the best they can be to withstand the challenges or take advantage of the opportunities in that game.  OK?  What I mean by that, is that an athlete has the ability or lack of ability to basically survive in a game and we need our athletes to focus on those things, to look for feedback, understand what it is they need to improve, and then go out and improve those things.  When we start to blame things like the game, or the Coaches or the Referees,  or just the overall environment, what the athlete says is "Hey, not my fault!  Right?  If all these things changed, I'd be better."  And a lot of parents perpetuate that.  They say 'well, if all this stuff changes, or if that Coach wasn't there, or those rules weren't like that, or if it was this, this, this, and this, then my athlete would be better.'  I don't necessarily disagree but it doesn't help to sit back and wait.   A lot of times these changes that people are looking to see in organizations or structures of organizations are not going to change anytime soon. And so waiting for them to change is really disempowering your athlete. When if we just focused and said "Listen, this is the way it is and this is what we need to basically make it happen"  It's like complaining about the weather.  To be honest, you can either look outside and go 'you now, it's raining, God, I hate the rain,  I wish it would stop raining,  I wish that cloud would move.' Or you could put on a raincoat, grab an umbrella and go out and enjoy the day.  Right?   Our Society Would Rather Complain Than Change But we are a society that would rather complain than change.  It's easier to complain and hope that everything around you changes than to actually change.  But for an athlete to survive in a sport, they need to develop the abilities to thrive no matter what the situation, and that includes coaches, and other parents and organizations.  If you want to succeed, you gotta stop talking about  getting the game to change and focus on what does the athlete need to do  to overcome whatever the obstacles are in the way of the athlete.   What Have You Been Focusing On? So, think about this for a little bit.  What are some of the things that you've been focusing on...that you've been wanting to change, wish to change, but really if you just focused on something else like something inside of you to survive that you would then thrive within your sport.  I would not have become an Olympian, or an All-American if I had just waited for things to change.  I needed to basically just figure out what I needed to work on.  And I'd like to say this, as a goalie in pretty much every sport I ever played and an Olympian in a timed event, all I really needed, all I really wanted was to know what I really needed to work on to be better, to be faster, to be a better goalie, less goals in the net.  Whatever it was I would do because those were the things that would get me forward. Things like 'I wish that guy didn't shoot so hard.' or 'I wish that guy had a legal stick'.  Legal stick, illegal stick, it doesn't matter.  I still needed to stop the ball.  Okay?  And that's what you need to do. Parents and Coaches Need To Focus Too Alright, so if you are a parent or a Coach watching this, do me a favor, stop complaining about all these things outside of the control of the athlete and just focus on what the athlete needs to do in order to achieve and get better.  The best coaches, the best parents, help their athlete focus on what it is that they can control and improve those things and from there that athlete is stronger and able then to succeed.     Chase Enjoyment and not "Fun"

    Chasing fun is not the goal of a high performance athlete. Why?  Because fun is different for everyone.  And most importantly, when something isn't fun anymore, what happens?  People quit.  And that's not a discussion we really want to have right now. So what should you chase?  Enjoyment. I don't think it's a lot to ask of coaches to create an enjoyable practice because even though something is hard, or difficult, of challenging it can certainly be enjoyable. But when you are labouring it can be categorized as not "fun". Listen to today's episode to learn more.
