Before anything else, our thoughts this week are firmly with teh family of Damian Kust. Damian was a cherished and passionate member of the tennis community whom we lost at the age of just 26. His work covering the Challenger Tour set him apart, but his passion and knowledge was what really made him shine. RIP Damian. Details of his funeral and donations to the foundation his parents have chosen are here: https://x.com/damiankust/status/2009644081207709969 It always feels utterly empty to follow such profoundly sad news with the mundanity of the week's tennis news. Here is what else Calvin Betton, James Gray and George Bellshaw discussed this week... Novak Djokovic has pulled out of Adelaide, his only planned warm-up for the Australian Open, saying he is not physically ready for the challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have not played an ATP event yet this year either, but were busy playing an indoor practice match in front of 15,000 people in Seoul, South Korea. Poland FINALLY won the United Cup, Hubert Hurkacz gaining redemption for spurning two championship points against Alexander Zverev in 2024, beating the German en route to leading his nation to victory... ...but Iga Swiatek's form was far from impressive, and it was Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski, Luke Johnson's new partner, who were instrumental in securing the title PLUS: No Australian Open wildcard for Nick Kyrgios; there is one for Stan Wawrinka; titles for Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina; Emma Raducanu's return; and OF COURSE *that* wildcard in Nairobi. Calvin Betton is in Brisbane but that won't stop him getting on the podcast (even if it does stop him getting any sleep). He joins James Gray for the first half of this week's podcast before subbing out for George Bellshaw, who sleeps soundly in his childhood bedroom in the West Midlands. They discussed... - Emma Raducanu pulls out of her season debut (she eventually played Maria Sakkari)... ...and she's testing a new racket - Stefanos Tsitsipas reveals he considered retirement after battling a back injury last year - Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Calvin relaunch their defence of the 250 - Novak Djokovic pulls out of the PTPA - Venus Williams gets an Australian Open wildcard but Nick Kyrgios is made to wait for his - Katie Boulter links up with a new coach in Michael Joyce - Iga Swiatek questions why we needed another "Battle of the Sexes" And finally, could Lionel Messi really win 50 grand slams?! It was the inaugural edition of the São Paulo Open, marking the WTA's return to the city after a long absence. Rakotomanga Rajaonah was outside the top 200 before the tournament; her win vaults her up in the rankings to a career high of No. 131. Key stats/factors:She converted 4 of 8 break point chances, while Tjen managed only 2 of 10. Rakotomanga Rajaonah didn't hit an ace in the final, and committed five double faults, but her serve percentages and second-serve resilience were strong. Tjen had a strong first-serve performance, but she struggled significantly on her second serve. Jovic wins GuadalajaraWinner: 17-year-old Iva Jovic (USA) picked up her first WTA title at the Guadalajara Open Akron (WTA 500 event), beating Emiliana Arango (Colombia) 6-4, 6-1 in the final. With this win, Jovic becomes the youngest winner on the WTA Tour this season. She had to battle in earlier rounds, including saving multiple break points and pushing through some tight matches. In the final, she dominated from the return, saved break points, and used momentum well. The victory also gives a large boost in prize money (~US$164,000) and ranking points, moving her significantly up in the race. Seoul Preview (Korea Open 2025)Here's what to look out for as the tour shifts to Seoul:The Korea Open Tennis Championships in Seoul are a WTA 500 event, outdoor hard courts. Prize money is ~$1,064,510, and a strong field is expected. Key players / seedsIga Świątek — World No. 2, top seed; she's making her Seoul debut. Amanda Anisimova — Seeded high; coming off strong results. Ekaterina Alexandrova — Former Seoul champion, familiar with the conditions. Clara Tauson, Daria Kasatkina, Beatriz Haddad Maia (defending champ), Emma Raducanu among others — mix of experience and rising forms. What to watch / storyline anglesWhether Świątek can break her WTA 500 title drought — she hasn't won a 500-level since Stuttgart 2023. The defending champion Haddad Maia will be looking to defend points and maintain momentum. The wildcard entries (especially local players) might shake things up; local crowd support could matter. Rising players might use this as a springboard late in the season (for rankings, confidence, etc.) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The US Open is heating up in New York and Round 3 brought yet more drama in abundance. Jannik Sinner survived a stern test from Denis Shapovalov but is still searching for his best tennis, while Coco Gauff powered past Magdalena Frech to set up a much-anticipated fourth-round clash with Naomi Osaka. Joel and Chris look at their head to head and decide who will a (presumed) Arthur Ashe night session slot favour most - or could we be in store for some 'car crash tennis' as Joel puts it. Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina once again proved too strong for Emma Raducanu, with Joel and Chris discussing how the Brit can best handle ultra-aggressive opponents.Elsewhere, Taylor Townsend continued her fairytale run with a stunning win over Mirra Andreeva as Jelena Ostapenko published another Instagram story update. Novak Djokovic overcame brief back injury concerns to edge past Cameron Norrie, and Adrian Mannarino advanced in bizarre circumstances whilst on a bathroom break after Ben Shelton's tearful retirement on court. Off-court, fan behavior sparked controversy when a millionaire CEO was caught stealing a signed hat meant for a child from Polish player Kamil Majchrzak, adding fuel to discussions about crowd conduct at the US Open.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. The second round of the US Open delivered high drama, surprises, and a few fiery exchanges — and Joel and Chris are here to break it all down. We dive into Iga Swiatek's gritty three-set win over Suzan Lamens, her first dropped set since Montreal, as she battles her way into the third round along with Jannik Sinner's first serve struggle. Naomi Osaka continues her clean run in New York - bedazzled Labubu toys in tow - raising the prospect of a blockbuster showdown with Coco Gauff, who herself survived a rollercoaster three-setter against Ajla Tomljanovic with dangerous Donna Vekic awaiting in tonight's night session on Arthur Ashe.Elsewhere, British hopes took a hit with Jack Draper's withdrawal due to injury, while Emma Raducanu cruised through in style, showing signs that maybe she is back to her US Open 2021 title winning best. We also unpack Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko's heated on-court clash that had the crowd buzzing, and discuss the shifting power dynamics in men's tennis after early exits for Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, Jakub Mensik, and fellow young guns. We also look ahead to standout Day 6 clashes including Rybakina vs Raducanu and Djokovic vs Norrie. New York, New York! The opening round of the 2025 US Open has had a little bit of everything — shock exits, emotional goodbyes, and first class meltdowns (ahem, Daniil Medvedev) so why not join Kim and Chris as they unpack all the drama from Flushing Meadows.Making the headlines, Australian Open champion Madison Keys' surprise defeat to Renata Zarazua was the standout upset, as the American struggled with nerves and unforced errors in front of the home crowd. At the other end of the spectrum, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz opened their campaigns in style, with Djokovic overcoming the tricky up and comer Learner Tien whilst Alcaraz produced a near faultless win against big serving Reilly Opelka— though his new buzzcut stole plenty of headlines too. Is his brother to blame for a shocking buzz cut? Emma Raducanu also made waves, securing her first US Open win since her 2021 triumph, while Iga Swiatek maintained her blistering summer form with a commanding start. No bagels, but the New York bakery is open with a breadstick!Elsewhere, Venus Williams delighted Arthur Ashe Stadium in a three-set battle with Karolina Muchova, and the sport bid farewell to two beloved champions, Petra Kvitova and Caroline Garcia, who played their final matches. Add in Daniil Medvedev's latest meltdown that had the team wondering whether he went too far this time and plenty of bold-prediction drama in the Tennis Weekly camp, Round 1 has certainly set the tone for a thrilling fortnight ahead.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Adam kicks things off by sharing his excitement for the upcoming Rolex Historics at Monterey's Laguna Seca before chatting about his plans to spend time aboard Rick Caruso's massive superyacht. He then reacts to Stephen A. Smith's explanation of why Pete Buttigieg is polling at 0% among black voters despite leading the 2028 Democratic primary race overall, and weighs in on Denver's bid to host the Gay Games. Then, Adam and Jason “Mayhem” Miller dive into trending headlines, from Emma Raducanu wanting a crying baby removed during a tense 23-minute game, to Jannik Sinner's Wimbledon serve being interrupted by a rogue champagne cork, to Los Angeles officials cracking down on dangerous street takeover meet-ups with tougher penalties and possible jail time. Then, renowned attorney and author Alan Dershowitz calls in! Adam opens by asking about the importance of political balance in American governance before shifting focus to the growing challenges of living in California. Alan connects the homelessness crisis in major cities to policy decisions dating back to Ronald Reagan, while Adam voices concern over the increasing trend of corporations and publications blacklisting people for their political views. They also touch on the controversies surrounding Jeffrey Epstein—including Alan's own legal entanglements, Trump's alleged involvement, and the mystery of Epstein's wealth—before Alan shares his candid thoughts on the Democratic Party and the Obamas.Lastly, Adam recaps his recent fire vlog where he interviews Rick Caruso about how he successfully protected his properties during the Southern California wildfires. They also point out Caltrans work trucks they always see on the freeway and imagine the nightmare of crashing into one. Finally, Adam vents his frustration over a Los Angeles tunnel being tagged with graffiti less than a day after it was repainted, using it as a jumping-off point to rant about modern parenting and the need to teach kids common sense.Get it on.FOR MORE WITH ALAN DERSHOWITZ:BOOK: The Preventive State: Challenge of Preventing Serious Harms While Preserving Essential LibertiesTWITTER: @AlanDershFOR MORE WITH JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER: INSTAGRAM & TWITTER: @mayhemmillerWEBSITE: www.mayhemnow.com Thank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineHomes.comoreillyauto.com/ADAMOpenPhone.com/adamPluto.tvThriveMarket.com/ACSLIVE SHOWS: August 29 - Provo, UTAugust 31 - Torrance, CASeptember 6 - Charlotte, NCSeptember 12-13 - El Paso, TX (4 Shows)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We also look at the defeat of Madison Keys by Laura Siegemund and ask if that's something we should have seen coming, analyse the losses for Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina, and discuss big wins for Sonay Kartal and Amanda Anisimova. In part 2 (49m48s) we look at all the men's results including Alcaraz's four set victory against Struff, Fritz's continued progress through the draw, and Rublev's improved form as he beat Adrian Mannarino. There was even more Matt-coded content as Jarry beat Fonseca and Ben Shelton added to history with a 70 second serve-dominated winning game on the resumption of his match. On Day 3 at Wimbledon, the tennis continued to be dramatic, with more seeds falling in what is rapidly becoming the major theme of this tournament. In part 1 Catherine, David and Matt begin by discussing the defeat of a weary-looking Jasmine Paolini by Kamilla Rakhimova. Emma Raducanu impressed against Marketa Vondrousova, but what chance does she have against Aryna Sabalenka? We also talk about a strong performance from Madison Keys, Matt's getting excited and nervous about Amanda Anisimova's draw, and we cover disappointment for Boulter who once again lost a match at Wimbledon when she was the favourite. In part 2 (40m34s) we look at the men's draw, which has opened up further with the loss of Frances Tiafoe to a revitalised Cameron Norrie, and Lehecka to an inspired Bellucci. There's excitement about the match that's been set up between Fonseca (who beat Brooksby in arguably the best match of the day) and the resurgent Nicolas Jarry. The prospect of Chilean against Brazilian fans in round 3 is tantalising. And Taylor Fritz will finally get a day off tomorrow after delaying the pod once again with his late night five-set victory over Gabriel Diallo. There's also plenty of coverage of Carlos Alcaraz's victory over plucky Brit Oliver Tarvet. In part 3 (66m58s) we look ahead to tomorrow's order of play, in particular Dan Evans getting the chance to take on Novak Djokovic on Centre Court. It was a crazy first day at Wimbledon, but Catherine, David and Matt were live to help process it all. Part 1 - Carlos Alcaraz took a scenic route to eventually beat Fabio Fognini. We discuss the potential reasons why and what if anything it means for his 2025 Championships bid. The original Next Gen members Medvedev and Tsitsipas continue to struggle and continue to provide unconvincing responses in press, We will have to wait until tomorrow though to find out the fate of two other members of that group, as both Fritz and Zverev are suspended overnight. The new next generation on the block, however, as represented by Joao Fonseca, was looking good. Part 2 (42m08s) - We discuss Sonay Kartal's unexpected win over an out of sorts Jelena Ostapenko, solid performances for Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, and a reasonably comfortable victory for dormant-volcano-due-for-eruption Marketa Vondrousova. Sabalenka made short work of Branstine, but reigning Australian Open Champion Madison Keys had a tough time of it against Ruse. We are concerned about how Jasmine Paolini is looking despite having made it through to Round 2, and an incredible performance by Amanda Anisimova which thoroughly delighted Matt was overshadowed by security concerns around Putintseva and by Ons Jabeur retiring injured from her match. In Part 3 (66m18s), we finally name our strawberry mascot, and run through the order of play for Day 2, now supplemented with matches held over from today.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Catherine, David and Matt were back for their second live show with news from media day at the Championships. Part 1 – Men's Draw. We discuss what the top players said in press today, including Jannik Sinner's reluctance to state his reasons for changing his team right before a major tournament. There's further chat about the apparent “blind date” nature of the US Open doubles partnerships, and about a cheerful Carlos Alcaraz being beaten by Andy Murray – at golf. Novak Djokovic showed he's clearly still hungry for big titles, and we discuss whether a professional and mature Jack Draper is feeling the pressure to succeed on home turf. We've spoken as well to Matteo Berrettini, Alexander Bublik, and Alexander Zverev, and an emotional Dan Evans gave us a insight into the internal struggles that can loom over you at the end of your career. Part 2 – Women's Draw (36m28s). How long and dark a shadow has been cast by Aryna Sabalenka's post US Open press conference? We talk about how both Sabalenka and Coco Gauff feel about the situation now and their reactions at the time. There is concern about where Ons Jabeur is with her game these days, and fears about Emma Raducanu's fitness as well. But there was cheer from an unexpected encounter with Marketa Vondrousova. Part 3 – Results (56m49s). Jessica Pegula wrote herself into the narrative by winning Bad Homburg, beating Iga Swiatek. Is she now firmly in the mix for the Wimbledon crown? And there is huge news from the women's tournament in Eastbourne as Maya Joint defeated an emotional Alexandra Eala in a hard fought final, leading to a big Backhand List announcement.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! How did she use her slice and dice game to defeat the likes of Elena Rybakina, Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova? And what more could they have done against her? There's also chat about Zheng Qinwen's ‘shoenanigans' and Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter playing doubles together. Part two - Results round up (33m33s). Elise Mertens saves 11 match points against Ekaterina Alexandrova and goes on to triumph in s'Hertogenbosch, Gabriel Diallo wins his first title, and Taylor Fritz continues his dominance over Alexander Zverev.
