All things surf from in and out of Wales, hosted by Tom Anderson and others. Interviews with local, national and international legends, topical discussion and general stoke! (Producer: James Dodd; Artwork: GS Design Co; Music copyright James Dodd 2020)
Plenty to talk over, whatever the waves have been doing! Logan Nicol joins Tom for an update on the Wilkinson Sword, held in Fresh West last month, as well as mulling over the upcoming final event of the European QS tour, the Caparica Pro, and Patrick Langdon-Dark's chances there. Besides that, of course, is a little update on the surf diaries so far, and then some advice on fin setups - a topic we've been asked to cover many times, and are promising to revisit in more detail soon. We just need some waves to try it all out in now...Produced by James DoddArtwork by Weareturbopixel.comMusic Copyright James Dodd 2024
We had to drop at least once before 2024 was done, didn't we? Our excuse is we kept waiting for the Welsh to run... but then it did, so here we are. We've got the exclusive first interviews from both Mens and Womens winners Logan and Josie, as well as a 'best bits' file of Greg Owen's commentary. Tom debates with studio guests Sindia Sosdian and Logan whether summer or winter is the better proposition for a Welsh surfer, and since all three keep surf diaries we've also got a bit of discussion on that, too. How many surfs are you on for in 2024? And are you going to set a 2025 target? Let us know via the usual methods.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2024With thanks to the WSF for audio clips from the live feed
Who in Wales doesn't miss the Rhines? Of course, it was only a matter of time before Crest and Welsh Surfing legend James Rhino Thomas appeared on our bandwidth again - and this time it's from New Zealand, his new place of abode. Following a late arrival, as Rob had to finish his Cricket Club's AGM first, he and Tom ask Rhines about all the important things; how is the surf, what's the weather like, was John-John Florence really that good in real life? This is a great tale of ongoing adventure, and we're stoked to hear that the family's new set-up is going well. What better way to put together a Christmas episode than by talking to someone who's right in the best days of their summer? (Information about how to emigrate appears at the end of the show...)Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
We formed this podcast to chat with legends, and here they are! To celebrate the WSF turning 50 this year, Crest has pulled together quite a guest list. Mark Vaughan and James Jones have joined Tom and Rob on the couch, alongside none other than Linda Sharp and Herbi aka Huw John. These guys pretty much are the WSF over the past few decades, and once again, Linda's encyclopedic knowledge of Welsh, European and World surf culture is as expansive as it gets. Flanked by the storytelling of Herbi, it's quite an experience to chat to the pair together. When we did a Surveymonkey of who'd you'd most like to hear from back in 2020, Herbi was one of the most suggested names. So, here it is. You want legends... We give you legends...Produced by James DoddMusic Copyright James Dodd 2023Artwork by GS Design Co
For most of Wales' sixty-plus years of surf culture, the idea we could have a world champion was beyond improbable. Not any more. Last winter, at Pismo Beach, California, Llywelyn 'Sponge' Williams broke the best record of them all - the first ever Welsh world surfing champion. This is an incredible tale, from the beaches and points of the LlÅ·n Peninsula to touring the world, and could it even one-day lead to an appearance at the Paralympics for this tiny surfing nation? Hear Llywelyn tell all in this moving interview with Tom and the WSF's Steve White.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2023
Charger, style-master, Olympian and current European Number One... could there be a better start to our fourth season? On the morning of the final (Boardmasters), Tom and Millie Phillips sat down with the defending event champ, Portugal's rising star Yolanda Hopkins. Yolanda has been a popular figure on the QS in recent years, as well as qualifying for the Toyko Olympics in style. She has already more than made a mark against the biggest in the game - including beating Carissa Moore earlier this year as a WCT wildcard in Peniche. And did you know her mother was from Bridgend? Of course you did! This episode also includes an update on the Welsh and British surfers' QS situations at the end of the first four events of the European calendar.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2023
It's here! Season 4 is go, and it's kicking off with Rob and Tom's analysis of the 2023 Welsh. Held over the Mayday weekend, it turned into a real showcase of the state of Wales' surfing, and our presenters should know, having watched just about every heat as our team helped run the webcast with Camera Anchor (a.k.a. Craig Nicol). This full breakdown includes a comprehensive list of results, scores, anecdotes and interviews with Josie Hawke, Emily Williams, Patrick Langdon-Dark, Tom Fisher and Mark Vaughan.Produced by James DoddMusic Copyright James Dodd 2022

The Season Three finale sees us chat to a very special person in Welsh and British surfing. John Purton has been shaping surfboards seriously for some half a century, and in that time has met, known and worked with some of the top athletes these shores have known. Involved from the first moments of the UK surf industry, we hear about the various labels JP has shaped under, and the characters and capers that have come along through a lifetime of surfing and shaping. As Rhino is moving to New Zealand, this episode doubles up as a special send-off for him - JP is one of the figures he has most wanted to sit down with for a podcast. To mark the special occasion, Camera Anchor Craig Nicol has worked with us to come up with a video edition if you're using YouTube. Thanks to all our 2022 listeners and see you again in Spring 2023!Video Produced and Directed by Camera AnchorAudio Episode Produced by James DoddMusic Copyright James Dodd 2022
With more heat than ever on governments' approaches to clean oceans, sewage discharge, sustainability and plastic reduction, we catch up with one of the shining lights of surfing's ecological movements. Hugo Tagholm has decades of experience trying to hold power to account on behalf of the environment. Right as the SAS Safer Seas and Rivers app was in most headline bulletins for exposing the extent to which water companies actually use loopholes to pollute, Hugo spoke extenisvely with Rob and Tom (who'd also been asked to speak to the BBC the day before about the same story). Listen as Hugo reminisces about the history of the iconic organisation that is Surfers Against Sewage, his life in campaigning and what surfers can do to contribute to the crucial causes on which our oceans survival may depend. And, the question on every Welsh surfer's lips... when is the legendary Toxic Trophy contest making a comeback to Langland Bay?Produced by James Dodd.Artwork by GS Design Co.Music Copyright James Dodd 2022.
In the second of Rob and Tom's dispatches while on WSL duty in Newquay, this is a celebration of a range of voices from the UK junior scene. During the Havianas Junior Open, beach marshall Tim Pitt let Crest run a pop-up interview station during Rounds One and Two of the boys' event, through which they managed to get the thoughts of a range of the competitors, including the eventual boys winner Jay Phipps and his father, shaper Mark Phipps. (The Havianas Junior Girls Open was won for the second year running by Gower's Alys Barton, who was interviewed as part of the live broadcast released last week.) Full list of interviewees are tagged in the Instagram post to accompany release. This episode also includes a studio-based update on how the Brits are standing in the European QS rankings after the 3000 event in Anglet, with the help of Logan Nicol, as well as a quick preview of his and others' upcoming trip to the Worlds in Huntington Beach later this month.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2022Episode recorded with thanks to Tim Pitt, Pauly Jefferey and the rest of the Boardmasters directing team.
Having annoyed ears around Wales for decades, Rob and Tom were both fortunate to finally make their debuts as WSL rent-a-gobs last week at this year‘s Newquay Boardmasters Surfing Festival, after the event was given QS status again. A fitting fiftieth episode has emerged; a special Crest live which Rob did on Saturday afternoon, with the help of Callum Thomas, while the juniors were on hold for a few hours. This is a series of quickfire interviews which went out to the beach crowd, with a huge range of characters who were on hand in the competitors' area. We have simply uploaded the whole broadcast here, but if you want to pick out specific guests they are time-stamped in the show notes below. There will be another Boardmasters special to follow for September's First Tuesday's episode, featuring a huge list of UK juniors and a round-up of where the British Isles' surfers are sitting after the big three summer QS events. In the summer of 2020 we had the pleasure of talking to Mark Schofield for a whole evening, covering his surfing life and his views on just about everything else we could think of. In March of this year, we sadly lost this colossus of the Welsh surfing community. This is a re-cut of the conversation we had with Schof back then, and a chance for us all to both enjoy his voice, and to feel the pain of losing this exceptional figure. There will be a paddle-out when those closest are ready, and Crest will of course share the info once we know. In the meantime, here is the man revisited, with love and gratitude to the Schofield family, forever in the hearts and minds of all the surfers who knew the legend that was Mark.
It has to be the coolest moniker in surfing – Wavemaker. Nick Hounsfield is best known for being the person who brought surf stoke to the inland flats of northern Bristol. In one of The Wave's fabulous glamping pods, Tom and Emily caught up with the man who took the place from inception to conception. What made Nick one day wake up and decide he wanted to undertake such an ambitious project? What was it like showing these plans to the planning inspector who didn't surf? And how does he feel when that blue, almond-shaped barrel reels off with a stoked customer sitting on its foamball? Besides this, we also hear about Nick's surfing values and journey, as well as a general celebration of a place that has become one of England's outstanding surf zones.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2022
An exciting adjustment to the promised schedule for this month, as for the first time since Carwyn Williams (we believe, at least) Wales is home to Britain's top ranked pro surfer. In case you didn't know, Pat Langdon-Dark is a young Gower goofyfoot who finished the year 13th on the WSL Europe leaderboard. It seems the prospect of a British, and indeed Welsh, surfer making it to some of the biggest events in the sport are very much alive. While popping into Porthcawl to watch the BLU contest, Pat sat down with Tom and Rhino to talk about his approaches, his plans and his response to the narrowest of narrow misses for a Challenger Series berth (so narrow that even the WSL posted he'd made it at one point!). Whether shredding Europe's beachbreaks, touring the motherland for new spots or charging the frigid slabs of the northern nations, Pat loves it all. Stand by for an extraordinary chat of stoke, technique and mindset.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2022
Besides being one of the best surfers this land has known, Jamie Bateman has recently become Surfline's chief forecaster for the UK and Ireland. He's long been one of the most interesting guys you could sit down with for a chat about the ocean and its ways, but now he's officially employed in that capacity. In another video edition episode (thanks to Craig at Camera Anchor if you head to our YouTube page), Tom and Vaughanie catch up with Bateman to find out about his unique surfer's journey. Besides the mishaps and the accolades that make Jamie the legend he is, there's also a chance to find out how a Surfline forecaster goes about their business - well, the stuff they can tell us at least. Lots of lesser known facts about one of our favourite style masters, but will he answer Vaughanie's most important question of all: what's the surf like in...?Produced by James Dodd, Mark Vaughan & Tom AndersonVideo edition directed and edited by Craig NicolMusic copyright James Dodd 2022
Founded off the back of a skate ramp made from stolen ply, the Langland Board Riders is now one of the most dominant forces in Welsh surfing. Having fostered some of our greatest past and present surfers, this is an organisation which taps into one of the land's best known surf communities. Joined by a panel of LBR stalwarts, we talk history, culture, localism, the Mun, iconic events like the Toxic Trophy, Derek Hynd's Red Bull tours and the Seeded Open - as well as how not to get into Cinderellas for free if your name is Nick Swinnerton (when the place existed, and Swinno lived in Wales, of course). There's also a chat with teen shredder Alys Barton before she left for QS duty, and a preview of the upcoming Wilkinson Sword, which of course is currently held by the LBR. Panelists: Si Page, Ian 'Tomsk' Thomson, Matt 'Spud' Stephen, Sam Johnson & Ed Bresnan. Hosted by Tom Anderson.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021
To finish our 2021 Season, here's the second instalment of The Gill's life story. What was it like to discover some of Northern Europe's most iconic spots? What about the process of sharing those finds? Tom and Rob hear all about these moments, as well as tales from Ireland and Wales - not to mention a life-changing trip to Mauritius and of course his long-standing personal friendship with none other than Da Cat, Miki Dora. The greatest tales, from the greatest of legends - put simply, this is why Crest in Partnership with Elusive was started. Season Two culminates here with one of the all-time storytellers of Welsh, and indeed global, surf folklore. Paul Gill (a.k.a. The Gill) here talks to Tom and Rob for the first of a two-part life story. From a childhood in the stands at Anfield, to some of the best Mundaka ever seen, via a torrent of typically torrid toilet tales along the way - this is a not-to-be-missed extravaganza of surf magic. During the recent Blue Earth Summit, one of the UK's most iconic surf figures joined Rob and Rhino to discuss the importance of this key moment in the history of the surf industry. Now working for Patagonia, multiple British champ, seasoned traveller and big-wave legend Gabe Davies, is well placed to reflect on the nature of surf culture, and the ways it can and should change to confront modern ecological challenges. Of course, no chat with Gabe would be complete without also probing him for some of the amazing travel tales which have come from a life spent exploring the globe. From the frigid North East of England to South Sea adventuring with Quiksilver's 'The Crossing' (and plenty of Hawaiian seasons in between), Gabe's perspectives on stoke and the open road are something all surfers need to hear. Inspiring and thought-provoking, this is a special hour with one of surfing's most engaging voices.Produced by James Dodd & James 'Rhino' ThomasArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021
We've been huge fans of Adz Lison's The Grumpy Surfer Podcast since it's debut moment, so we simply had to do a crossover episode with him. And why not make it a triple? Also joining us, therefore, for this special, are the 'Pagans', Pat Langdon-Dark, Callum Thomas and Logan Nicol. In this three-way edition, Tom, Rhino and our TGSP/Pagans counterparts embark on a review of the 2021 international pro surfing season, followed by a pertinent discussion about what an up-and-coming surfer from the British Isles might need to do if they want to get to the next stage. Given the Pagans are there or thereabouts themselves, and that Adz has a rare ability to get people talking about things they didn't even know about themselves, the result is an incredible insight into what makes the talented trio tick. Thanks again, Adz, for journeying over the Severn Bridge, and we look forward to welcoming you on the show again in 2022 for a life-story episode. The tale of how towing-in was developed is one of the most crucial turning points in surfing's journey as an 'extreme sport'. A million miles from what most of us do, day-in-day-out, what sort of mindset does decide to be part of such incredible leaps into the unknown? For the milestone that is our 40th episode, Tom and Rhino chat with none other than Buzzy Kerbox - a key member of the crew who first discovered how the unridden realm could be accessed and then charged. Here, Buzzy tells us how he, Laird Hamilton and a few others began on relatively primitive equipment, only to end up leading a movement that changed the sport forever. We hear what it was like to take part in the first mapping of Jaws as a surf spot, as well as some of the other incredible tales from Buzzy's life as a top model, traveller and all-round waterman.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic copyright James Dodd 2021
The Pura Vida MiPost Welsh Nationals has finally run, and we break down the results. Tom and Rhino are joined in an emergency studio by Open Men's Champ Logan Nicol, Llantwit-turned-Gower ripper Chris Fowler (fresh off finalling in the Masters) and Junior Longboard Champ Blake Jones. Via Zoom, we also have some words from regular contributor Emily Williams, this time celebrating her seventh Women's Open title, as well as an interview with up-and-coming grom Anna-Rose Merchant, who claimed her first major event win on the weekend. It's all here in this comprehensive analysis of the event we all love - including a run-through of the rest of the results and some excited speculation about the future of Welsh surfing. One of the landmark interviews the team have done to date sees its concluding part here, with Greg delivering more of his masterclass on what he thinks makes good surfing. Stand by for Vaughanie to challenge him on some of these points, before fond reminiscence from Greg about being among the first travellers to surf Cloudbreak as non-Tavarua residents, and getting ridiculously tubed at the world-famous reef pass. More fond tales of dream sessions on UK shores follow - before some banter as Tom and Vaughanie remind Greg about the legendary phone pranks he's been caught by over the years. Will Vaunt get the better of him one last time, or is Greg wise to such shenanigans nowadays? To finish this amazing life story double, one of Wales' finest voices has both some wise words for us... and of course one of his trademark awful jokes. We wish this one had been ten hours long, not one!Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic copyright James Dodd 2021
The one the people wanted! If you've ever had anything to do with Greg, you'll know what to expect here. One of these shores' finest ever surfers is also one of our most colossal characters. Of course it was only a matter of time before we hit Greg up for his life story, and as with some of our other legends, it's just too much for one episode alone. In this first instalment, Tom is joined by Mark Vaughan and the pair walk Greg through his early years, from being paid to 'go down the hyrdro-slide at Coney to make it look busy', through to running No Limit Wetsuits and gathering a slew of national and international titles. This journey, naturally, was via some hilarious mishaps - such as the infamous time one of HM Constabulary was minded to swim into the lineup at the Esp to stop him breaking a little known by-law. As Tom puts it, 'listening to Vaunt and Greg bounce off each other is one of the finest experiences', and now here it is for your patient ears! Enjoy. Hours after the Olympic surfing finals, and a day before his internet-busting chat with Kelly Slater, WCT legend Brad Gerlach joined Tom and Rhino for this amazing discussion - now available to Crest listeners as an unscheduled Summer bonus episode. One of the best voices in all of surfing, Brad here tells us about the game-changing moments he has witnessed in decades of being on or around the World Tour, about his new Waveki Programme (www.waveki.com) as well as passing his judgments on the spectacle that was surfing's Olympic debut. What was is like to surf Cortes Bank and Jaws on a seven-foot board and to carve mid-face? Who were the opponents he used to revere most on tour, and why does he think Italo Ferreira is 'the most improved surfer I've ever seen'? Keep listening to find out - as well as to access a one-off discount code for Waveki subscription which is shared in the last moments of the show. Crest in Partnership with Elusive would like to thank Llantwit/Gower shredder Chris Fowler for helping arrange this one, and for giving his own thoughts on the Waveki programme at the mid-point of the episode.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021
Surfing is in the Olympics, and it's starting this week! Our extra-special guest to celebrate this historic moment in surf is Llewellyn Whittaker, whose full-circle journey from Mossel Bay, South Africa has taken in time living in Durban, Newquay and South Wales along the way. Now the head coach of the German Surfing Federation, Llew will be in Tokyo already by the time you hear this, as part of the team pushing for Leon Glatzer to medal at surfing's Olympic debut. Tom is joined by Crest's Monday Club, namely pundits Mark Vaughan and Emily Williams, to hear Llewellyn's life story. Learn how the mantra 'Focus-Trust-Believe' has fostered a mindset which has led his riders to make history, how his own pro career contributed to the coach he is and how the kernel for the whole thing started when he gave a teenager a surf lesson in Aberafan, while lodging in Cefn Cribwr! Taking full advantage of this rare opportunity, our panel has also quizzed Llew about what British surfing may need in order to realise similar Olympic dreams - as well as getting his tips for the Olympic surf tournament itself. This is an absolutely unmissable episode, as the greatest sport on earth gets ready to join the greatest festival on earth!Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021
Perhaps there isn't a job you'd imagine as being further from beach culture than member of parliament? Nevertheless, South Wales has for several decades had a surfing MP! So how does David TC Davies balance the most pinstripe job there is with sandy toes? And does it influence his views on the stuff that matters? With politics geek Producer Dodd (a dyed-in-the-wool Marxist, apparently!) joining Tom as co-host, we talk the ocean and lifestyle, before debating a few key policies from a surfer's perspective. We've also got to say a big thanks for a cameo appearance from local grommet, Mack Jenkins, of the Bridgend Youth Council, who we've appointed as our 'Political Editor' after Laura Kuenssberg's CV didn't contain enough surf credentials. Linda's spectacular life story picks up with some insight into her uncanny ability to foster winning mindsets not just for herself but for a generation of younger surfers too. It's potentially one of the most important events in surfing history to date. The 2021 ISA World Games takes place in El Salvador from the 29th May, deciding the final five men's and seven women's spots in the inaugural Olympic surfing tournaments in Japan this summer. Especially exciting for Welsh surfing is that Manorbier's own Harry Cromwell has won through to the El Salvador event, after a heroic display in Thurso last month. Listen to Hazza's thoughts ahead of this amazing trip, as he appears here in conversation with Tom Anderson, Mark Vaughan and Emily Williams. We've also got a separate interview with 'Pagans' Logan Nicol and Patrick Langdon-Dark, as they reflect on their own near misses with ISA qualification, and discuss goals as they set off on a WQS jaunt across Europe. If there's a challenge for our times then surely it was Al Mennie's mind-boggling 'Swim through Darkness' across the 2020-21 winter. One hundred kilometres, at night, in or around the impact zone. We can try to imagine the pain, the fear, the dedication and the cold. For Al, this was a nightly reality, allowing him to express what so many of us were feeling as one of the most challenging winters of our age set in. This feat sits as merely the most recent in a career of extreme ocean-going activity which includes Mavericks, pioneering the Western Irish coasts by boat and paddleboarding between countries - as well as being a stunt double and a bodyguard. Oh, and a writer and motivational speaker, too. Who could forget that little nugget last season when Rhino told us Tom Curren had written a song about him? Well, the central part of that incredible story belonged to former Welsh Seniors Champ Jem Evans, who would go on to host Curren at his Bourdaines home for three consecutive summers. What were the circumstances that led to a Gower and Porthcawl ripper suddenly sharing his every surf with one of the world's most famous surfers? And what is it like to spend so much time in the company of surfing's great enigma? Jem shares his remarkable insight with Tom and Rhino here, as well as offering some amazing analysis of Curren's surfing approaches and style - a wave-riding repertoire unmatched to this day for its flair and aesthetic. Has any single person made a bigger difference for British board sports than Olympic snowboard medallist Jenny Jones? Arguably, her contribution to slopestyle's debut at the Sochi 2014 games was one of the most significant catalysts in spreading the popularity of surfing's mind-boggling sister discipline. As our beloved sport approaches its own date with Olympic destiny later this summer, what can our riders expect, and what of the jocks v purists dilemma? As an absolute ripper on the water too, and an ambassador for Bristol's The Wave, Jenny is uniquely placed to have a say on such things. Beyond that, though, it is the sheer stoke of Tom and Rhino's conversation with Jenny here that makes it a must-listen. A pure frother with a love of travel - including mishap, of course - and a passion for all things surf, Jenny's ocean story is every bit as enthralling as the chalet-hand to medal-winner tale we all know so well.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021
We all gazed longingly at the images shared by 'Photo Boss Bali' last year, but what are the actual stories behind them? What was it like to shoot Kelly Slater at Padang-Padang, to stare at empty Sumatran perfection as the rest of the travellers went home? Originally from Pembrokeshire, the tale of how Luke Cromwell came to be a resident of the world's most surf-rich nation is one of adventure, ambition, luck, dreaming - and of course hardship. For the debut to Season 2, Luke tells Tom and Rob about life in the archipelago, its surfers and spots, the mad year that was 2020, and what he misses about home.Produced by James Dodd & Tom Anderson, in partnership with Elusive ClothingArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2021

Besides a range of grass-roots surf shop and business owners, each of the 2020 Crest presenters has left tips for what to buy that special surfer this festive season. And, of course, where would we be without a review of the highlights of Season One? Our presenters have also chosen their favourite moments from the inaugural year of the podcast, sending Producer Dodd to the vault for a few quick audio reminders. All in all, this bonus 2020 episode therefore has the highest number of contributors to a single edition yet! Last week it was becoming PJ - and now it's about being PJ. Hands up if you remember that surfline! Listen as PJ tells Tom and Rhino how he went about creating his seminal surf report service, about growing the surf shop and brand and about the rest of life's journey to where we are now. This candid discussion includes a haunting account of life-threatening injury, as well as plenty more of Pete's trademark lyrical praise for the sheer joy of surfing as both an action and a way of life. Plus the obligatory debate about the state of modern surfing. Who's his favourite surfer to watch nowadays? You'll never guess it...This is the finale of Crest's first season. Thanks to each and every listener, and we can't wait to bring back more of the same in Spring 2021.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonVideo (YouTube version only) directed by Joey PearsonStay Young written by Benny Gallagher & Graham Lyle, arranged and performed by Pete 'PJ' JonesFeeling Something written and performed by Pete 'PJ' Jones (Copyright 2020)Men of Harlech rearranged by James DoddCREST PODCAST 2020 SEASONSeries hosts: Tom Anderson, Rob Blythe, James ‘Rhino' Thomas, Breige Lawrence, Elliot Dudley, Rhydian Lewis With thanks to all our series guests: Andy Martin, Emily Williams, Harry Cromwell, Luke Young, Mhairi-Clair Stewart, Wayne Edwards, Mark Vaughan, Gemma Harris, Richard Stroud, Matthew Hapgood, Gwen Spurlock, Glyn Ovens, Rob Miles, Mark ‘Splinter' Griffiths, Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor, Mark Schofield, Logan Nicol, Luke Dillon, Sam Bleakley, Sindia Sosdian, James Jones, Angus Ruddle, Chris Nelson, Demi Taylor, Eoin McCarthy Deering, Pete ‘PJ' Jones Crest is thankful for the support of Porthcawl Surf School, Obsessive Disorder, The Welsh Surfing Federation, Anne Gallagher, Breige Lawrence, George Schofield Music:Main theme tunes, Punks of Harlech and Rastas of Harlech, arranged, performed and recorded by James Dodd (Copyright 2020)Series Artwork: GS Design CompanyVideo Production (YouTube) for Episodes 19, 23 & 24: Joey Pearson Scripts for Episodes 11, 12, 14 & 15: Rob Blythe Series Scripts & Research: Tom Anderson Series Producer: James Dodd
Present or nearby for many of the defining moments in international surfing history, Pete ‘PJ' Jones has first-hand experience of some of the greatest tales our sport can offer. In this first half of his life-story interview, Wales' trailblazing surfer talks Tom and Rhino through discovering his ‘gift' and its life-changing impact. From ‘dropping out' of any career that might get in the way of water time, to winning his European title in 1977 on the day his son James was born, this is all about the process of becoming ‘PJ' – the man whose distinctive style and approach ensured that Wales sat atop of Europe's surf scene during formative years in the sport's culture. Our first Irish guest is as intrepid as they come. Renowned charger Eoin McCarthy Deering tells Tom about his addiction to remote slabs on the west of his beloved Emerald Isle, as well as the wanderlust which has seen him post up in some of the planet's remotest surf spots. Eoin's relationship with GoPro has led to some of the most awe-inspiring surf-travel clips out there. How does he go about organising, and surviving, such adventures? And on top of this, there's also a free Gaelic lesson for those of you drawn to tongue twisters.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
International purveyors of the finest surf stoke. After jacking in the day jobs to become nomadic writers, Chris Nelson and Demi Taylor's Footprint Guides to Surfing in Britain and Europe dropped at a time when publishers were eating up anything surf. Building on Demi's experiences from her days in the Roxy PR department, the couple then hit on a winning formula in running the inaugural London Surf Film Festival. In the decade since, Chris and Demi's events experience has seen them also develop the Approaching Lines festival in Newquay and a raft of specialty surf contests. In the process, it has been their job to hang out with some of the most interesting, and high-profile characters in the surf world. From putting on Steph Gilmore's premier in the big smoke, to helping upcoming and aspiring film directors break through, their events have often become crucial stops along any world surfer's European leg. In conversation with Tom, the pair recall some of the personalities and situations the festivals have thrown up, as well as the movies which have made it.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
Long known as a charger and a legend of Wales' underground surf scenes, Porthcawl's Angus Ruddle is a character whose tales, advice and opinions are the stuff of fable. A consultant vascular surgeon by day (or night!), 'Gus' applies the same personality traits which have taken him to the top of an elite profession to his pursuit of action sports. In the water, he's well known for chasing down mountainous waves - and on land... well, the situation is no different. In fact, if we talk mountains, then he has bagged the holy grail. In this exceptionally candid interview, Gus tells Tom and Rhino about summiting Everest, crossing Afghanistan on horseback and other adventures both in and out of the medical scrubs. He was a certain booking for Crest from early days, anyway, having been present for two of the top 'surf trip nightmare' tales submitted for Episodes 7 and 8. Like his life, Gus' appearance on the podcast is entertaining, unpredictable and inspiring to the last.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
'Logos out, logos in.' Be it advice for the future generations, or incredible tales from the highest levels of contest success (he's beaten Taj Burrow!), James Jones is one of the most important voices in modern Welsh, and indeed British, surfing. Tom and Rhino Thomas get the inside take on what it's been like to grow up with the weight of a nation's expectations on your shoulders, only to live up to the hype and then some - and with a surf-stoked smile throughout.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoVideo (YouTube version only) directed by Joey PearsonMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
What makes a world-renowned paleoclimatologist with a powerful forehand gouge leave New Jersey to settle down in... Wales? Apparently our waves aren't too shabby, and our water 'isn't as cold' as NJ in winter. With a work travel itinerary that could just as easily be that of a Search movie, Dr Sosdian has joined Tom and Breige Lawrence to tell tales of voyaging in the name of oceanic research (which often means catching waves!) and of growing up in Jersey. Why did she replace the sandy barrels of Manasquan for Llantwit? And what is the future for the coral reefs the world's ecosystems - and often its surf spots, too - depend on? And would she actually consider herself long enough resident of Llantwit to prefer Channel Coast SC over Welsh Coast?Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
With Brilliant Corners, Sam's series of travelogues from the world's less visited surf destinations, now available on WSL Studios, this former European champ is well placed to lead a new wave of surf exploration. Listen to him as he tells Tom and Rob about some of the places he's visited, his inspirations, travel companions and philosophies. We also learn a few tricks of the WSL commentary trade from an insider's perspective, and about what exactly is needed to get a PhD in surf travel writing.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
'Surfing's not a jock sport, it's not football or whatever... We're not f***ing athletes, we're surfers,' said Joel Tudor to Surf Europe. A contentious issue, which has rumbled since, now it's Crest's turn to tackle the thorny debate about surfing's changing identity. For this debate special, Tom and Rob square off against each other from different sides of the divide - with the help of Logan Nichol, Elliot Dudley and Cornwall's WQS battler, Luke Dillon. Guest hosted, refereed and adjudicated by Breige Lawrence, we attempt to settle once and for all whether the 'jockification' of surfing is a good thing. Sparks will fly, challenges laid down, and common ground kept to a minimum. Who'd have thought a benign question asked by Rob to Gwen Spurlock in the Garden Studio back in June would lead us here? Hey, ho, such is the role of a surfing podcast eh! So who won the argument? Jocks? Purists? And do we even care? Of course we do! Tune in to find out why...
The halcyon days of a surf industry boom, travel, more health setbacks and an opinionated take on modern surfing - the second half of Schof's life story sees him tell Tom and Rob some fantastic tales. After founding what is now No Limit Wetsuits, Schof's manufacturing and branding career went through the roof. Sponsoring Tom Curren and the Welsh Rugby Team preceded a second kidney failure, in response to which a BBC documentary team accompanied him to the Philippines to make a hard-hitting documentary which added pressure to UK governments to bring in ‘presumed consent' for organ donation. Schof also talks frankly about his current health situation, before getting into his opinions on the condition of modern surfing - something we're always happy to hear him debate. An enthralling discussion, from one of Wales' greatest surf raconteurs.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
Quite simply one of our favourite people on earth! A European Champion who's also survived cancer twice and kidney failure twice (as well as getting his golf handicap below 3), Mark Schofield is one of the most enthralling people you could listen to in the English-speaking surf world. Thanks to a carefully constructed, once-off studio in his back garden, Schof has told the incredible ups and downs of his life to Tom and Rob. In part one of this tale, Schof talks of discovering surf stoke, his first realisation of being seriously ill, recovery and golf - before reflecting on why the period in which he won his titles was a golden age in Welsh surfing.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
Separating myth from man is the key challenge when dealing with a character of this magnitude. Often hailed as the 'best person to go on a trip with ever', as well as being the key protagonist in one of Wales' 'best surf tales ever', Splinter Griffiths wears these tags with humility and humour. The fact his dozens of major titles often take a back seat shows just how widely the skill-set is spread for one of the greatest bodyboarders these isles have produced. In this special interview, Tom and Rob are also joined by Dr Rhydian Lewis from Cardiff University's School of Mathematics - an old adversary of Splinter's. Dr Lewis, besides assisting with cutting myth from mechanics, also referees a Crest specialty event... Splint vs Richard Burton. Who walks away the undisputed cream of Port Talbot? Tune in to find out!Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
'I would say I am probably your average Welsh surfer... who just pushes his luck,' says Caerphilly's best export. This is an amazing insight into a uniquely gung-ho mindset - which has seen the unassuming Rob Miles take on Teahupoo, among many more of the world's most challenging pits. Expect humility, humour and many more nonchalant comments like, 'That was my, uh, second broken back', as we'll hear him tell Rob and Elliot. For this episode, the Garden Studio bears witness to how an inspirational surfing life can be forged many thousands of miles from the contest horn (literally). How do you score perfect waves with uncanny reliability? How do you dust off life-changing injury only to charge again months later? And how do you satisfy that appetite for the buzz, time and time again? This week's guest is many things. But 'your average Welsh surfer' is certainly not one of them...Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
One of the truly giant personalities in Welsh Surfing, Llantwit's Mark Vaughan tells Tom and Rob of a life in surf - which more and more, nowadays, seems to happen in boardies (yes, we do find out why... sort of). This is someone who's been present for, or participating in, many of the biggest moments in the recent surf history of both the British Isles and Europe, and in this frank, open, entertaining and perceptively reflective memoir interview, Vaughanie shares what that ride has been like from behind the wheel.Produced by James DoddArtwork by GS DesignMusic Copyright James Dodd 2020
