Creative consultant and iconic figure Amanda Harlech has played a key role in fashion for decades. Harlech is recognized for her insightful, ultra-collaborative approach, her influential work with brilliant designers, and her mentorship of young designers. She initially joined forces with John Galliano in the '80s and '90s before later joining Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel. For her, creative sensitivity and a willingness to work are facilitating forces in an industry that she sees as evolving in a more collaborative direction. Though she surprisingly calls herself not quite “a fashion person,” Harlech's prolific career has shaped parts of contemporary fashion design and showcased her intuitive understanding of creative storytelling. Illustrating a unique narrative of artistic connection, Harlech notes that the enduring allure of craftsmanship is what's contemporary now. Episode Highlights: Creativity and make-believe: Harlech has vivid memories of being surrounded by storytelling and fashion, which were emphasized in her life from an early age by those around her. “It's a way of navigating life:” Weaving fictions and working with fantasy is how Harlech has always sourced creative inspiration, from childhood collaging to designing gowns. Career trajectory: Harlech went from working at Harper's Bazaar and The Face to working with Galliano, a collaboration she calls “so powerful.” Collaboration rather than competition: Harlech found Galliano's designs emotionally powerful, and their active collaboration is contrasted with a more passive one while working with Karl Lagerfeld for 27 years. She discusses collaborating with Andrew Bolton for the most recent Met Gala in celebration of Lagerfeld. Collaborative evolution: While Lagerfeld, for instance, directed teams based on his genius, Harlech notes that contemporary labels tend to create entire creative communities wherein designers all bring something unique to the garments. Creative sensitivity: Harlech's intuitive understanding of a collection's intention and rhythm has propelled her throughout the years. “I am this undefinable thing:” Surprisingly, Harlech says, “I'm not really a fashion person, although I love the whole creative process that goes into a collection.” She describes herself as a facilitator above all else, synthesizing creative energies among the many individuals any collection or shoot requires. Other forms of collaboration: Enjoying how mentorship “switches the light on” in her head, Harlech brings her know-how to the energy and willingness of Central Saint Martins students. Progress and its countermovements: Discussing AI's ever-increasing role in creative design, Harlech takes a positive stance, remarking on the emergence of support for and dialogue with the hands-on, artisanal work that goes into design. What's contemporary now: Harlech takes the question in a mythical direction with ancient myth and ritual, paying homage to “the old ways, the skill of making, craft.”
Thanks to our somewhat damp climate, Wales is home to a staggering 850 different species of Bryophytes, representing three quarters of the total number (which is 1100) found in the UK as a whole. Bryophyte is the collective name for a group of plants that include mosses, liverworts and hornworts. This year the British Bryological Society is celebrates its hundreth birthday and has a variety of activities to mark the centenary, including designing a number of moss trails at Treborth Gardens in Bangor; the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire and also one in Harlech, Gwynedd. It's there Pauline Smith explores the wonderful world of bryology and goes "mossing"!

Summary Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones (Website; Wikipedia) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss his book. He has studied American intelligence for 50 years. What You'll Learn Intelligence The CIA and the American presidents they served The founding of the CIA just as America became a global superpower Pearl Harbor, the USSR and covert action under Eisenhower Assassinations, controversy, the Church Committee, and 9/11 Reflections How much of the future can we predict Intention in history And much, much more… Episode Notes This week's guest, Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones, is Emeritus Professor of American History at the University of Edinburgh. He has been studying American intelligence for half a century and has written a history of the CIA to coincide with its 75th anniversary, entitled: A Question of Standing. This episode with Rhodri is a counterpoint to last week's episode with Robert Gates: a career historian and a career intelligence officer; a European and an American; a 70,000 feet view and a 30,000 feet one. Interestingly, they were born continents apart within almost a year of each other. Rhodri is the author of over a dozen books, has a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, and grew up in Harlech, Wales. And… Harlech, Wales, where Rhodri grew up, has the steepest street in the Northern Hemisphere. The steepest street in the Southern Hemisphere, and the world according to Guinness Records, is in Dunedin, New Zealand (Dunedin is Gaelic for Edinburgh). The steepest street in the continental United States is Canton Avenue in Pittsburgh (to celebrate its Welsh heritage the Steel City has a St. David's Society). Espionage in Welsh is ysbïo. This week Neil comes face to face with the mighty walls of an almost impregnable castle, which down through its history inspired many heroic ‘last stands' and a song that famously features in one of Neil's favourite films. On the orders of Edward I, Harlech castle was built between 1283 and 1285 by James of St George a military engineer of unsurpassed genius. It's clever design, a castle within a castle with it's back protected by the Irish sea, made it a truly formidable fortress.During the Wars of the Roses in 1460 Margaret of Anjou, queen and wife of the Lancastrian King Henry VI fled to Harlech castle. For the next eight years the castle was besieged by Yorkist forces determined to capture her. Eventually an army, 10,000 strong, starved the castle into submission. Although unsuccessful this heroic, ‘Last Stand' was immortalised in the song ‘The Men of Harlech'.It was this song, which was used to such great effect in Zulu, the 1964 film starring Michael Caine, about another legendary ‘Last Stand', the defence of Rorke's Drift in the Anglo-Zulu War.Check out, Neil's new Video Podcasts on his Patreon site - Neil Oliver. And the series Instagram account – Neil Oliver Love Letter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to Cerddoriaeth Celtica, a companion piece for the Starlight Radio Dreams series “Celtica”. When we conceived of Celtica the desire was to create an adventure serial which used music as part of the action and story. From using music to power Celtica’s magic tools to musical numbers for the big moments, Celtica does exactly that. And Cerddoriaeth Celtica lets us further explore the beauty of Celtic music, both as part of the serial and just for its own sake.In this episode of Cerddoriaeth Celtica, Karolyn Blake, co writer for Celtica and the actor behind the title character, sings “Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech” and discusses one of the great heroes of Wales, Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welshman to call himself Tywysog Cymru (Prince of Wales). In the serial Celtica, this song was the basis for King Wulfric’s rallying speech to the Britons who had joined the Roman army. We hope it inspires you to fight for your freedoms, whether that’s at the polls or marching in the streets. It has been one of the biggest controversies of 2019.Back in July, Dunedin's Baldwin Street was stripped of its title as the world's steepest street.A few weeks ago, we spoke to surveyor Toby Stoff who has been one of the biggest champions of the famous street. So much so, Toby flew to Harlech in Wales to measure Ffordd Pen Llech to prove that it is in fact not as steep.Toby joins us again for an update on his bid to get Baldwin Street's title back.LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE
The battle to restore Baldwin St to its place as the world's steepest street is going global.Dunedin surveyor Toby Stoff jetted off yesterday to the United Kingdom, where he will film an episode of the reality television courtroom show Judge Rinder. And in a new twist, Guinness World Records will come to the party.Baldwin St was dethroned in July by Ffordd Pen Llech, in the Welsh resort of Harlech.Mr Stoff has concerns about the methodology used to determine the title, as the record-setting bid was measured on the inside verge of a curve, greatly exaggerating its steepness and disadvantaging Baldwin St, which is straight.Just before he flew out, he learned a representative of Guinness World Records would also be at the filming of Judge Rinder. It marked a major turnaround, as the organisation had stayed largely mum on the issue."So hopefully we don't just totally munt that up; hopefully it'll be good," Mr Stoff said. When asked what he was hoping to achieve with the show, he had a simple answer: "justice for Baldwin St"."We're just gonna have to play it by ear. It would be nice if Guinness or Judge Rinder said `yeah, actually, good point boys, I see what you're banging on about.Have your world record back'."If Guinness were to say `yeah', I'd be as happy as a bee with a bum full of honey."When he first got involved in the issue, he never thought it would become this big."It was going to be a letter to the editor, basically, and that was going to be it, but it sort of escalated."But nah, it's a bit of a laugh, it should be good."He will spend a couple of days in Manchester, England, to film the show before heading to Wales to conduct his own survey of Fford Pen Llech. But those on tenterhooks about the verdict may have a long wait. The result will not be known until the episode airs, which could be at least six months down the track.- words by Daisy Hudson, Otago Daily Times
Recorded 14JUN2019 - Rochelle, knower of things about cheese, returns! An uncountable horde of cremes advance on our outnumbered proud as they raise their voices in defiance of death itself! Well, not death, per se. But creamy deliciousness. And not really defiance, either.
This episode of Radio Birdsong comes from Snowdonia, North Wales. High above the Aberglaslyn Pass, looking out across the Lleyn peninsular and the traeth to Harlech with Cnicht and Snowdon rising majestically behind us, this is Radio Birdsong from Wales. Captured early one morning as rhododendrons splash their vibrant colours over the mountainsides and streams pour down from hills where sheep graze and larks fly high.
In this very first installation of our #dressedforradio live series, in partnership with Escada, your hosts sit down to tackle the gargantuan topic of female empowerment and the art of power dressing. Speaking to the very talented and wonderfully outspoken stylist and fashion consultant, Tallulah Harlech, they discuss everything to do with the transformative nature of clothes: can an outfit really change your mood or land you that dream job ? Is it sexist to dissect and comment on the outfits of our female politicians? Does one have to dress like one of the boys to be heard in the boardroom? Plus, Tallulah explains what its really like growing up under the watch of the formidable Amanda Harlech, who was a true muse to John Galliano and the late Karl Lagerfeld, and has repeatedly been voted one of the best dressed women in the world, how sportswear is the answer to all your styling woes and why it’s so important to get away from this dated notion that as women, it is in any way denigrating to talk (or care) about what we wear. To finish: some practical tips on how to style a power suit and a Q&A from the audience. Andrew McKenna was the Dive Team leader on the Niku IX expedition. He has been a TIGHAR member since 1990 and currently serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. The son of famous paleontologist Malcolm McKenna, Andrew’s archaeological eye was trained from childhood helping his father on fossil hunts in the Gobi Desert and other remote locations. Andrew participated in underwater and onshore archaeological operations on four previous TIGHAR expeditions to Nikumaroro (2001, 2007, 2010, & 2015) and was on the TIGHAR team that surveyed the Maid of Harlech in Wales in 2007. In Episode Seventeen of the Chasing Earhart podcast, Andrew gives us his thoughts on the work that TIGHAR has done on Nikumaroro over the course of the last 28 years as well as the role underwater exploration and maritime archeology plays in the search for Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Electra.
This week’s Failure to Launch journeys NOT to the center of the Earth, but just a bit under it to The Inner World, a land of miniature sets, puppet Space Manta Rays and liberal Yetis. After his uncle Harlech’s attempt to get to this Inner World fails (spectacularly, if also predictably), Captain Chris Turner assembles a crew of generic TV sci-fi types, the world’s most English Englishman and one really angry bloke and sets off after him. At least, we think for him. They’re also after the supposed treasures of the Inner World, which include new food sources, limitless energy and space age technology, all of which their ship already has oh fuck this thing is a glorious mess just listen we’ll do our best to explain. Reviewers: James Ferris, Harry Brimage, Andrew Cherry Soundboard: David Shaw
In our fifth episode, we talk about how a peaceful protest quickly turned into a horrific massacre in Russia, the surprisingly interesting history of the Cullinan diamond, the quest to break the land speed record; and the mysteriouslights that hovered over the towns of Egryn and Harlech in Wales, for several months in 1905.Show notes can be found here: yesteryearsnewstoday.tumblr.com/

The younger Henry enters our story full time as he leads to fight to Glyn Dwr. And for the alternative Prince of Wales after the failure of the French invasion the light went out of his rebellion. It wasn't all over yet - Harlech and Abersytwyth still stood - but without external help things looked pretty desperate.
Creative director Lady Amanda Harlech is interviewed by Alex Fury on 11 July 2011.
