This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the full show, plus dozens more like it, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. We start this patrons episode with a tribute to Phil Cohen, a colleague of Jem and Tim's at UEL and a fellow traveller to the Birmingham cultural studies writers discussed in this episode. From there we pick up where we left off in our reading of the seminal edited collection ‘Resistance Through Rituals'. Tim and Jem cover the two ethnographies of 70s drug use found in the book - weed and acid if you're wondering - before rolling on to a disappointed essay on the Commune movement. We hear about Tim's experience on a Kibbutz, The Farm and a funky cut from YES. Later in the episode we examine two excellent pieces from the collection: Dick Hebdige on Reggae, Rastas and Rudis; and Ian Chambers on the Racial Politics of Rock'n'Roll. Next time we'll be completing our journey through the book with chapters on youth fashion, criminality and more, and taking a deep look at the weighty theoretical introduction. Produced by Matt Huxley. Tracklist: Yes - Yours is No Disgrace The Farm Band - Loving YouBob Marley and the Wailers - Duppy Conqueror Big Joe Turner - Shake Rattle and Roll
In this episode, we recap Season 2, Episode 5 of House of The Dragon. We understand why Corlys is angry, but what's fueling Nal's anger? Alicent uncovers misogyny, and Daemon remains trapped in Luigi's castle.
Jamaica's beaches, gentle Rastas and uplifting reggae music make up the postcard version of an idyllic island nation – an image Safiya Sinclair says she wanted to flesh out in her compelling memoir "How to Say Babylon". The author recounts a childhood spent observing tropical fauna and flora and reading poetry, far from tourist hotels and the bustling street life of the Jamaican capital. She joins us to discuss the double standard for Rastafari boys and girls, the symbolic meaning of cutting off her dreadlocks and the hidden literary talents of a mother who inspired her personal and professional journey.

Jake "The Animal" Rastas calms down for a bit and joins Doc in the studio to talk about his incredible 12-month journey from being a non-runner to an ultra runner completing his first 100-miler. Settle in and buckle up as Jake covers a lot of ground in this wide-ranging interview, including his time on the gridiron in North Dakota as D1 football player, his oppositional disposition, getting ear-holed, being a pathological extrovert, the importance of signing up, imposter syndrome, lightning storms, sauna training, and what exactly happens when someone tells Jake he won't be able to do something. In honor of 4/20, the girlies walk you through the hazy history of a most special substance: marijuana. In the first of two episodes, they discuss how weed has been used throughout history to treat medical maladies and help people connect with the spiritual realm. Plus, how the Mexican Revolution brought the exotic “marihuana” to the states, the original dealers who helped the Jazz greats make their grooviest tunes, Reefer Madness, and more. Digressions include a cursory review of the new Taylor Swift album, the confusing world of TikTok Rizz Party, and our dream blunt rotation. - No ovat isoja asioita puuttua. Born in Jamaica to a father who belonged to the 'strictest and most radical sect of Rastafari', Safiya Sinclair was made to wear dreadlocks and subjugated from a young age. She was forbidden from climbing trees, riding a bike, wearing trousers, and told her virtue was in her silence and submission. Rastas were ostracised in Jamaica and Safiya's dreadlocks came to define her. In her isolation, Safiya's only refuge was when her mum introduced her to literature and poetry, which changed the trajectory of her life. Now a writer and Associate Professor of creative writing at Arizona University, Safiya has written an astonishing memoir ‘How To Say Babylon'. Already tipped to be one of the books of the year, Safiya shines a light on the female experience of this particular sect of Rastafarianism, juxtaposing her harrowing experiences with the use of luscious and beautiful prose. The writer Marlon James said of How To Say Babylon; “ To read it is to believe that words can save.”Here, in a truly captivating conversation, Safiya talks Annie through her changes. You can find out more about Safiya and the 'How To Say Babylon' and buy a copy here: https://safiyasinclair.com/home-how-to-say-babylonChanges is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast.

After having 6 caesareans and spending well over 30 years as a midwife, you could say that Leonie Rastas is quite the expert on c-sections and all the things that can happen during recovery! She never imagined herself as an author or business owner. When most people would have simply retired, she felt a huge pull to pass her knowledge and experience to others - helping them navigate those critical weeks postpartum where she's concerned about the huge lack of education provided to new mums about on how to care for themselves - all the info provided is about caring for the baby! So Leonie poured her heart out into her book, The C-Section Recovery Manual - years and years of personal experience, sharing the insider knowledge on the best ways to care for your scar and how to spot signs of infection or tears, and what to do about them! In a few short months after publishing Leonie has become a leading speaker on c-section care and recovery, and is now creating online programs to support & educate caesarean mums. She also hosts a free Facebook group providing support and advice for women on all things c-section! In this episode she shares honest insights into her unplanned journey from midwife to author, speaker and business owner, plus: how she discovered her purpose later in life why her book was an important part of healing her own traumatic experiences why so many women have been neglected by their medical team why it's so important to heal physically and mentally following this major operation About Our Guest Leonie is known for her C-section recovery advocacy and support. She is a nurse, midwife, author, educator and founding director of ‘Caesarcare', an online service business helping support women in post-C-section recovery with knowledge and skills. Her six children were all born by caesarean section and she experienced birth trauma and PTSD after one of her births. She has worked with thousands of C-section mothers during her forty years in clinical practice. In addition, Leonie has designed a variety of medical aids, and her TGA-approved- wound splint was on the shortlist for the Innovation award at the Australian Healthcare Week Sydney in 2019.

The Origins of the Rastafarian Movement in Jamaica. The first rasta, a Jamaican man named Leonard Howell, is a fascinating figure (more interesting than you think). If you think Rastas are a big fat punchline to a joke, agree with the negative stigma or just don't have a clue why the heck people are Rastas... this is a great podcast for you to get started. Let's set our biases and prejudice aside and talk about where this movement came from and why so many people to this day call themselves rastas. I will hold your hand through this spiritual movement and I guarantee you will be the only person in your friend group who knows this much about Rastas.A tantalizing historical journey where I discuss the history of the Rasta movement, crack jokes, and finally talk about Caribbean history in my favorite episode to date — because it's hands down the funniest. If you want to know about Ras Tafari, Haile Selassie, Jamaican Colonial History, Marcus Garvey, The Piby, Indian immigration to Jamaica, indentured servants, Athlyi Rogers, and learn about everything Rastafarian BEFORE Bob Marley, give this podcast a listen and don't forget... The Coral Gardens Story surrounds a series of events which saw from April 11-13, after a violent altercation at a gas station in Montego Bay, Jamaican police and military forces detained Rastafarians throughout Jamaica, killing and torturing many after been given orders from then Prime Minister and National Hero the Right Excellent Alexander Bustamante. With this episode being released on its anniversary dub "Bad Friday" each year, it is only fitting that we detail what led to this horrific incident. We tell the story of how the Rastafarians community was created in Jamaica and detailed the continuous system to oppressed its members since the 1940s.
