(Hosts: Christine and Kristin) Since the Middle Ages, the Tower of London has fulfilled many roles including hosting the Crown Jewels. It has, more infamously, also been a prison for many who were viewed as threats or criminals–leading to no shortage of fascinating stories tied to this property. In this episode, Christine and Kristin each share one of their favorite stories about riveting historical figures who found themselves captive in the Tower: Gruffudd ap Llywelyn (son of a Welsh prince) and Ranulf Flambard (the Bishop of Durham).
With this government seemingly wanting to place te reo in second place behind English we wondered how other countries treated their minority indigenous languages, especially when it pertained to public spaces etc Osian Llywelyn is the Deputy Welsh Language Commissioner and Director of Regulation who joined us to explain why it is so important to embrace and elevate minority indigenous languages. ==================================== Come support the work we're doing by becoming a Patron of #BHN www.patreon.com/BigHairyNews Merch available at www.BHNShop.nz Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/BigHairyNews Follow us on Twitter. @patbrittenden @Chewie_NZ
It's Wales so of course there's always another Llywelyn that did some gangster shit but this one is even more mental because despite the huge effect he had on both Wales AND England, only your dishy hosts, Wikipedia and an audio tour in Cardiff Castle seem to know diddly about him. Hit play and listen to us chat about a truly unsung hero who never made it into the Llywelyn charts despite definitely earning a top spot. Like hearing us chat about history? Wonder what it'd be like if you removed that focus and it was just us talking shit non stop with a vague idea of a "subject"? Well you're in luck. Check out our Patreon.
It's apt that Dafydd ap Llywelyn be the subject of our 69th episode because he was such a badass you just know he was slaying that 13th century skirt back in the day. From fighting the English to his own brother, Dafydd definitely knew that famous phrase about omelettes and eggs. So hit play and find out how this prince of Gwynedd's short lived candle burned twice as bright. Are you totally mega obsessed with us? Well you can hear more of our drowsy drunk tones by following us on Patreon. Or just imagine the pissed up voiced by reading posts on our socials.

For most of Wales' sixty-plus years of surf culture, the idea we could have a world champion was beyond improbable. Not any more. Last winter, at Pismo Beach, California, Llywelyn 'Sponge' Williams broke the best record of them all - the first ever Welsh world surfing champion. This is an incredible tale, from the beaches and points of the Llŷn Peninsula to touring the world, and could it even one-day lead to an appearance at the Paralympics for this tiny surfing nation? Hear Llywelyn tell all in this moving interview with Tom and the WSF's Steve White.Produced by James Dodd & Tom AndersonArtwork by GS Design CoMusic Copyright James Dodd 2023
We love the chart toppers like Llywelyn and Glyndŵr as much as anyone but Wales wasn't built in a day.Hit that triangular button and expand your love for a few old school princes that helped form the tapestry that is Wales.
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd has been described by many as the Beyoncé of medieval Welsh history so this episode is a particularly sad one.If you can take the heartache and want to know how the Welsh rebellion of 1282 came to end, say YASS PRINCE and hit play.

The path to sainthood can be long - as long as a 1000 years. For Meri Hohepa Suzanne Aubert, who died in 1926, that path hit a snag earlier this year when the Vatican Medical Council decided a potential miracle attributed to her could be explained by medical science.
A number of of towns in rural Wales this summer are hosting their first ever Pride festivals, bringing together LGBTQ+ people living in their surrounding communities. Caroline Evans joins the organisers of Powys Pride as they prepare for their event in Llandrindod to hear how they hope it will offer support to build a supportive community for LGBTQ+ people living in the county. The organisers of Hay Pride tell us how their celebrations were a drumming success. We also join a Welsh class in Llandovery in Carmarthenshire - a rural town that once was renowned for drovers passing through with their sheep, but recently witnessed their first LGBQT+ parade ....with the statue of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan waving the rainbow flag. And we look at the rural stereotypes surrounding being gay in agricultural rural Wales.
It's episode 99 of The Sword Guy Podcast! Next week we have a special 100th edition, so look out for that. While you're waiting, you can enjoy this week's episode with writer, journalist, editor and author, Marie Powell. Marie lives in Canada, but a search for her Welsh heritage inspired her to write her latest sword and sorcery epic, The Last of the Gifted. It is based on the events of 1282-1283 in Wales, when the last true Prince of Wales, Llywelyn of Aberffraw, was murdered by the English. His head was chopped off and sent to the king, Edward I, but nobody knows quite who killed him. There are several other mysteries surrounding the story, which we cover in our conversation, and we also talk about swords (both magical and historical), the Unicorn Exception, and giant elephants at Buckingham Palace.

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing PREP over Zoom video! British indie-pop four-piece PREP recently released their debut, self-titled album via Bright Antenna Records. The highly anticipated project is full of elegant jams and deep grooves that mine contemporary R&B influences like Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Thundercat, and Mac DeMarco while hearkening back to the soft, sheer sound of the late ’70s and early ‘80s. Recorded over the last year, on PREP, the band’s carefree melodies, crisp vocals, and slick production are at their peak.“There’s always been a very specific world I imagine when I’m writing PREP songs - like a recurring dream of a lonely, disheveled, but not completely broken life somewhere in West Coast America,” PREP’s Tom Havelock says. “A lot of driving. Big landscapes. Difficult relationships with people who’ve moved on to better things. They’re my thoughts, but they’re flickering through the head of someone who isn’t quite me.”“But I think making this album in such a concentrated burst, and at such a strange time, has made that separation seem less relevant,” Havelock continues. “When normal life suddenly feels like you’re walking through a disaster movie, what’s so unreal about imagining yourself sitting in an apartment in Pismo Beach, talking to a friend about their divorce? Whatever the setting, these are songs about reaching out for contact you can’t quite get, about missing people you maybe didn’t know that well to begin with. And while those are feelings I think a lot of us are struggling with at the moment, I’ve been especially grateful to have the dreamy pastel shades of PREP to filter them through.”The ten-track collection stays true to PREP’s mission of collaborative sound. PREP features Rhodes piano support from Australian singer-songwriter Sun Rai on “Danny Came Up,” a Macedonian 16-string orchestra on “Carrie,” UK-based saxophonist Mike Lesirge of the Killer Horns Trio on “Years Don’t Lie,” and vocal support from South Korean rapper and singer MISO on “The Stream.”About PREPIn 2015 the four members of PREP came together to cut deep grooves that mine contemporary R&B and electronica while taking inspiration from the soft, sheer sound of the late ’70s and early ‘80s. This love of modern production and classic songwriting united vocalist-lyricist Tom Havelock, keyboardist Llywelyn Ap Myrddin, drummer Guillaume Jambel, and producer Dan Radclyffe. The freshness is a product of each band member coming from a different musical direction. Llywelyn started out writing opera; Guillaume moonlights as a house producer and DJ; Dan produces hip-hop, and Tom works as a pen-for-hire songwriter in the pop music world. With widespread critical support and radio love from BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, KCRW, and Beats1, the band is turning heads and bringing listeners to "a much-needed funk-fueled trip to a sun-filled beach,” according to The Line of Best Fit.Earlier released tracks of 2020 “Love Breaks Down” (a jaunty track that recalls early Prince) and “Over” (reminiscent of a dark tropical evening with a seductive groove) featuring Norwegian electro-pop singer-songwriter Anna of the North aren’t included on PREP’s debut album, but still justify head bops.We want to hear from you! Ealdgyth of Mercia is not a famous name, but her episode is full of Rex Factors. As consort to Harold Godwinson, she was the last Anglo-Saxon consort and her story has plenty to fascinate: Lady Godiva, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn and a Welsh/Mercian alliance, and of course the dramatic events of 1066. So will the Saxons go out on a high or is Ealdgyth another queen who will remain lost to history?

Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon) – often anglicised as Carnarvon Castle or Caernarvon Castle – is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. It was a motte-and-bailey castle from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began to replace it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales, and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past, and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby. While the castle was under construction, town walls were built around Caernarfon. The work cost between £20,000 and £25,000 from the start until the work ended in 1330. Although the castle appears mostly complete from the outside, the interior buildings no longer survive and many of the building plans were never finished. The town and castle were sacked in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn led a rebellion against the English. Caernarfon was recaptured the following year. During the Glyndŵr Rising of 1400–1415, the castle was besieged. When the Tudor dynasty ascended to the English throne in 1485, tensions between the Welsh and English began to diminish and castles were considered less important. As a result, Caernarfon Castle was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. Despite its dilapidated condition, during the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by Parliamentarian forces. This was the last time the castle was used in war. The castle was neglected until the 19th century when the state funded repairs. The castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911 and again in 1969. It is part of the World Heritage Site "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd". --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support
