In today's episode, JP takes us through his evolution from starting his very first podcast to launching his own company, and why Energy Crüe took a backseat. Join us as we delve into the power of connections and the transformative impact of sharing our passions, both in our professional and personal lives.
Jonathan and I sit down to discuss the importance of relationships and networks in relation to sales, and how he teaches this to his students at TCU Sales Center. We discuss how sales is more about active listening, problem-solving, and helping others out before ourselves. We chatted about recruiting talent into the energy industry as well as utilizing new means of marketing to improve your sales process. We dove into the realities of energy and how it's often disconnected from people's expectations. Always great chatting with Jonathan and really dig his passion to develop future leaders!
I got behind the mic with my amigo Rey Treviño III (Director of Operations - Pecos Country Operating). I met Rey a few months back at a Crüe Club event, and since then we've become pretty good friends. From catching up at events to me being a guest on his podcast The Crude Truth. We chatted about how he got into the oilfield after a few years in the banking world. We discussed his experience of working in the field to learn about the industry and its importance of it. Also what it was like to be catapulted 5-6 years forward to being an operator through a series of chance events. Of course, it wouldn't be an energy podcast if we didn't discuss what's going on in the world right now. Always a blast catching up with Rey, and thanks for setting up the awesome studio experience!
Had a great conversation with our West Coast California energy enthusiast oilman Mike Umbro (FieldView Capital) yesterday for another Energy Crüe Podcast. He flew in to attend a Crüe Club event, be a guest on the Energy Crüe Podcast, and of course head to the FUZE event to speak on a panel. But was fortunate to have a chat with him about his next big project: and he needs all of our help! We discussed his goal of bringing together various industry professionals in California to put together a broad study and teaming with universities on energy realities and how they impact the local economy, people, and environment. As he's been battling politics and the narrative, all he wants is to produce domestic oil safely, and responsibly. However with the current rhetoric and policies, it is extremely difficult, and he sees it as a challenge we all will soon face unless we begin to get our ducks in a row as an industry. Really appreciate what he's doing in California and spreading some words on energy facts and the impacts of poor energy policies. Keep up the fight Mike, and thanks for your time! You can reach out to Mike to see what you can do to help support the collective and study he plans to launch soon! With his title either Energy Enthusiast or Energy Entrepreneur, whatever y'all like the best!
I sat with Bill Knox (VP - Ops - Anschutz) yesterday and we dove into his background growing up with a Vietnam helicopter pilot and how that instilled in him his love of aviation and flying. He discussed his experience in the Navy and the mentorship that he had there and how he strives to continue to mentor those around him. We discussed his experience and time as an oil'homme in Paris and what operating in that environment was like. We then chatted about what we can do as an industry to actually be advocates for a purpose and direction.
Just wrapped up an informative and engaging conversation with Nick Deiuliis (CEO - CNX) for another Energy Crüe Podcast episode. We began discussing the 160+ year history of CNX and where they are at today. With a company that began during the Abraham Lincoln administration we dived into the company culture, and how he has the benefit of being part of the interview process of every single candidate they hire. We then discussed everything from being an energy industry advocate and promoting STEM discussions when engaging in energy discussions, as well as what the energy crisis our world is about to face should policymakers double down on their decisions. We wrapped it up by discussing the impactful community mentorship program that just kicked off its second year (founded by CNX). The goal is to provide local youths with skillsets and knowledge for those who don't plan on the traditional college trajectory. Really impactful stuff and love hearing about it.
Always enjoy meeting someone for the first time and getting behind the mic immediately after introductions. We chatted about leading a startup software company and growing it 7X over in 5 years, how AEGIS sets itself apart from the traditional old school way of hedging, going from a super major corporation to a startup, the importance of work-life balance, and spending time with your kids, how we met our spouses, what hedging is explained to a 5-year-old, how hedging is used to control volatility, what he does when he's stressed or struggling and more.
James and I sit at a local OKC coffee shop and discuss his background and growing up, and how his love for rocks brought him into the oilfield. We chat about his career and his time at Chesapeake before going down his own path to founding VanAlstine Geosciences. We then get into his recent side career working with some major Hollywood stars as he pursues his acting career on the side. We chat about all the behind-the-scenes experiences he's faced working with Martin Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Dinero, and more. Always a blast chatting with James, as he's one of the most genuine people in the patch.
Had an awesome chat with Cody Godsell, P.E. (Senior Drilling Engineer- El Toro Resources LLC) at the Red Piano Lounge in OKC.We chatted about how growing up in South Dokota he found his way into the oilfield. Starting his career at Chesapeake Energy and what that experience was like, to landing his current role at El Toro Resources LLC and the differences at working at a large company versus smaller one. As President of the AADE MIDCON - American Association Of Drilling Engineers Mid-Continent Chapter we discussed the challenges him and other chapters are facing in regards to getting operators to attend events. We then discussed the concept of success and how our perception of it changes over time. Awesome time as usual chatting with him.
Had an awesome time chatting with Austin Groover and Blakley Farrow today for an Energy Crüe episode at the Petroleum Club of Houston. We discussed how Austin and Blakley were first generation oilfield and how they decided to not only pursue a Petroleum Engineering degree but the benefits and excitement to going to the service side out of college versus the operator side of things. We discussed what they are working on the with their SmartROS system and what it's been like working on it from inception to delivery. Problem solving, working with the right people, increasing drilling efficiencies, and of course optimization were some of the topics discussed. We then got into rom coms, bonus parents, work-life balance, and Johnny Depp & Amber Heard.
Adam Oxsen (VP - ROX Exploration) and I sat down at their office in Norman, OK to catch up on life. During our convo we discussed our interests and curiosities, Bitcoin, his tweet style LinkedIn posts. We then went down a rabbit hole of what success means to us and are we successful? Always great talking with Adam and be sure to check out his podcast: ROX Energy!
What an unbelievable and interesting conversation I had yesterday with Michael Hale (VP - Exploration Novo Oil and Gas, LLC) for another Energy Crüe podcast during my visit to OKC before we met up again at the final Crüe Club event for the quarter.Growing up in upstate New York with a father who passed on his love for science in his early years, Michael has always found himself a student consuming literature and audio books about everything and anything. From history, to science, to astrophysics he's always reading something. It was really interesting hearing about the natural topography led to him pursuing a geology degree then by chance through a college connection he moved to OKC to get into the oil & gas industry. One of the most interesting, brightest, and genuine individuals out there. I could have spent another 3 hours listening to his outlooks about our industry, personal accountability, and his love for Carl Sagan and how science has influenced his life.
Mike Umbro (FieldView Capital) a San Diego native, and an Operator in California joined me to have a conversation about what it's like as an operator trying to operate in California. Recently Mike has been very active on social media as an energy, environment, and oil & gas advocate. Showcasing the realities of when poor policy leads to higher cost, more pollution, more dependance, and a disadvantage to people in lower income households. We discussed what we have to do as an industry to have real energy conversations with people outside our industry. Fighting uphill battles, bureaucracy, stagnation and stalling of permits, while they are sitting on some of the biggest oil reserves and what that could do for the people of California. As someone who has been a voice of the realities of energy expectations versus energy reality, very excited to have had this convo with him, and looking forward to seeing what he's going to do not just for the California Energy industry, but domestic energy as well!
Had an awesome conversation with Kevin Thuot (Managing Partner - JetRock) last week during their visit to Houston for #NAPE for Energy Crüe Podcast. Special shout out to Zach Howard for reaching out and setting up the introduction.Kevin has an interesting past, growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, doing internships at NASA, discussing the vomit comet and his contribution to the space program (astronauts everywhere thank him), to pursuing a graduate degree from M.I.T., to how he started JetRock. We discussing starting his own company and leaving the comfort of a stable job behind. Focused on coding and building out their platform was the game since 2015, now he's looking to grow his presence by adding a team built for that. We discussed some personal hobbies and it was extremely interesting to hear more about the life of Kevin and how his creative mind works.Really enjoyed the conversation and appreciate their time during such a busy week!
Had an awesome conversation for another Energy Crüe Episode with Laura Freeman (Managing Director - Highpoint Global Capital) that lasted over 2 hours!!! We took a break from the usual podcast venues and headed to a Houston staple: The Shiloh Club.We started out with her background and how she got into the oil and gas industry with a physics major. We discussed her first role at OXY in California and how she crushed her first assignment. We discussed her pursuit of higher education as well as her thoughts on if an MBA is right for everyone. We chatted about traveling around the world and some interesting motorcycle trips/stories from Vietnam. We talked about everything from where we are at in our industry, the old ivory tower mentality, and what's shifts she is seeing.
Pete and I sit down to discuss how someone with a Management Degree from Texas A&M got into the oilfield. We discussed his various roles and the mentors that came with it who offered practical and logical advice when looking at opportunities. We discussed having the right mindset, and the importance of centering yourself. We got into a few tangents in here, but for an introvert, I really dig how Pete Marshall is diving into being guests on podcasts!
Sara and I begin our conversation trying to settle a Lafayette dispute that has been going on for years: Kellers vs Meche's King Cake. (NOTE: I've changed my vote). We did a taste test and made some decisions. We then dove into what LAGCOE is and the impact they are having in their community. We discussed stepping into a new role in a new industry only 5 months ago and the experience it's been for her. We discussed the three annual events they have coming up in 2022: First ever Executive Summit (March 16-17), LAGCOE Golf Tournament (April 7), and the EnergyFest (October 19 - 21).

The current status of the offshore market, both domestic and internationally. It was great hearing stories from Jon, who broke out at Noble Drilling working offshore in the 80s as well as how relationships and your make matters in our industry. David Little | Bitcoin Advocate Connect with JP Have you heard of the phrase “Bitcoin fixes this”?Are you seeing bitcoin everywhere but are still unsure what the hell it is? How does it relate to energy? What is mining it even mean? Do you feel like you are behind the 8ball when it comes to bitcoin/cryptocurrency?I sure did, which is why I sat down with David Little, where we had a conversation on bitcoins background, why he has so much faith in this cryptocurrency, the benefits of investing, and more. Ethan Etzel | CEO at Royal Completion Tools on Energy Crue Connect with JP Ethan and I sit down to discuss the pursuit of happiness and how to achieve it! What I really dig about Ethan, is that during our podcast we got into how he is actively passionate about having a mindset of happiness as well as advocating that for others. Whether it's working out, putting on some elevator jazz and unwinding when he gets home, or pursuing a passion outside the oilfield. One thing is clear though: you must actively and consciously disconnect from the noise that's always around us. We discussed him hiking Mt Kilimanjaro, horror movies, how he differentiates his plugs when it seems there are so many companies offering the same product, and much much more.
