In the fall of 1829, a Scottish settlement was thrown into turmoil by an invisible tormentor whose nightly mischief escalated into arson. Despite constant watch and attempted exorcisms, flames erupted repeatedly in one targeted home until its terrified occupants fled, only to see it burn to the ground. Seeking refuge in a neighboring house, they were again assailed by eerie noises, flickering blue candle flames, strange embers, and the sulfuric scent of brimstone. More disturbingly, unseen forces pelted them with lead balls and slugs—harmless but relentless. Unable to endure the torment any longer, the villagers summoned a witch doctor in hopes of banishing the fiend once and for all. This week, we are joined by local expert Dr. Rick Fehr for a deep dive into the origins of this legend. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.

Christine Russo, host of What Just Happened, has Tim Fehr from Happy Returns as her guest. Tim discusses the company's rapid growth and how its partnership with UPS has accelerated automation in the returns process. He explains how Happy Returns successfully integrated robotics into their facilities before the peak holiday season, reducing transit times and loss rates to record lows. The company has doubled its productivity through automation in 2024 and is now developing a new plan to further enhance efficiency in 2025. Fehr also highlights the importance of optimizing outbound transit times and leveraging cross-dock programs to reduce delays, ensuring that retailers receive returned merchandise as quickly as possible.Regarding e-commerce, Fehr believes that consumer expectations for convenience will continue to rise, especially as Gen Z shoppers—who have grown up with digital-first experiences—become a larger share of the market. He notes that practices like bracketing and showrooming, where customers order multiple items with the intention of returning some, are more prominent than ever. While some in the industry express concerns about sustainability and return costs, Fehr takes a pragmatic approach, arguing that returns are an inherent part of modern retail. Rather than resisting this shift, retailers need to develop smarter policies, such as differentiating return policies based on customer behavior, to manage costs effectively.Looking ahead, Fehr acknowledges that the competitive landscape for e-commerce is becoming increasingly challenging, with major players like Amazon setting high standards for delivery speed and convenience. He emphasizes that smaller retailers must leverage technology and partnerships to keep up, as the gap between industry leaders and smaller businesses continues to widen. The conversation also touches on AI-driven shopping experiences and how Happy Returns is providing retailers with valuable data on customer return behavior. With continued innovation in automation and logistics, Fehr believes that Happy Returns is well-positioned to help retailers navigate the evolving e-commerce landscape.

In Part 2 of Episode 50, I'm joined by two-time Tennessee PGA Teacher of the Year, Virgil Herring, and two-time PGA Tour winner, Rick Fehr. Virgil Herring is a graduate of Mississippi State's Professional Golf Management program and has earned the title of Middle Tennessee Section PGA Teacher of the Year five times, as well as Tennessee Teacher of the Year twice. He has worked with several Tour players, including Brandt Snedeker. In our conversation, Virgil shares stories about his time working with Snedeker, and we discuss Brandt's recent accolades—being named the recipient of the 2024 Payne Stewart Award and serving as an Assistant Captain at both this year's Presidents Cup and next year's Ryder Cup. Virgil also offers valuable advice on how to get your swing on the correct plane and how to reach a Flow State on the mental side of the game. Rick Fehr, who helped BYU win the national championship in 1981, was the low amateur at both the 1984 Masters and U.S. Open. After winning twice on the PGA Tour, Rick transitioned into becoming a top instructor. Rick and I dive into the topic of old-school versus new-school golf instruction. Have tools like Trackman and home simulators given us a false sense of knowledge about our game? He also shares his thoughts on Scottie Scheffler's claim that his mind is the strongest part of his game. We discuss whether trying harder or trying something different is the right approach, and Rick reflects on what it was like seeing himself on a trading card for the first time.

Today, we're joined by a special guest, Saskia, a Positive Psychologist who is deeply passionate about helping individuals connect with their true selves. In this episode, we dive into the powerful concept of values—those fundamental principles that act as a compass, guiding our daily behaviours, decisions, and overall life trajectory.Values are more than just ideals; they are the driving force behind our actions and, when aligned with our lives, can lead to a profound sense of fulfilment and purpose.Saskia shares her insights on how we can identify these core values through introspection and self-awareness, and why it's crucial to live in harmony with them. But in today's fast-paced world, filled with endless distractions, staying connected to our values can be challenging… the constant barrage of digital noise and the pressures of modern life can pull us away from our true selves. So, Saskia emphasises the importance of creating intentional moments to pause, breathe, and disconnect from the digital world. By doing so, we can not only enhance our mental clarity and sense of balance but also reinforce our commitment to value-aligned living.Through this conversation, we hope to provide you with practical insights and inspiration on how to cultivate a life that is deeply rooted in your values. By understanding what truly matters to you and aligning your actions with these fundamental principles, you can navigate life with a greater sense of purpose and fulfilment.Find Saskia: www.flourished-you.comEmail: saskia@flourished-you.comBook: https://designingyour.life/books-designing-life-original-book/VIA Questionnaire https://www.viacharacter.org/account/register

In this episode, Michael talks with Marty Anderies, Professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. They discuss a book that Marty co-authored with Marco Janssen, a colleague of his at Arizona State, entitled Infrastructure for Sustainability. The book is designed to introduce readers to the work of Elinor “Lin” Ostrom and her colleagues on the role of institutions in shaping behavior. Ostrom pioneered the study of institutions, particularly in context of the self-governance of resource-dependent communities. Marty discusses Lin's work and the role that she played in his career. The book also introduces readers to the work of Buzz Holling and his colleagues on the resilience of complex systems. Resilience is an important boundary concept, being used by multiple fields to describe the ability of a system to “bounce back” and sustain itself in a particular regime or state. It is related to but distinct from the idea of robustness, which relates the ability to maintain a desired system function in the face of disturbance and uncertainty. In the last half of the conversation, Michael and Marty try to unpack what these terms mean and how they can and should be used to understand our relationships with each other and the natural environment. Finally, Marty also talks about the importance of the term infrastructure, which is similar to but different from the idea of capital as many people use it. In describing his preference for infrastructure, Marty has provided this quotation from Bowles and Gintis (2005) that has influenced his thinking: "Perhaps social capital, like Voltaire's God, would have to have been invented had it not existed. It may even be a good idea. It is not a good term. Capital refers to a thing that can be owned—even a social isolate like Robinson Crusoe had an axe and a fishing net. By contrast, the attributes said to make up social capital describe relationships among people. ‘‘Community'' better captures the aspects of good governance that explain social capital's popularity, as it focuses attention on what groups do rather than what people own" (Bowles and Gintis, 2005, p. 381).
