In celebration of the nomination of Chris Wright to be the next Secretary of Energy, Jacki re-shares this interview from an earlier show in which she talks with Mr. Wright, CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services, a large hydraulic fracturing (“frac'ing”) company. Liberty's ESG reporting has been one of the few that properly and unapologetically gives credit to the oil and gas industry for the historical lifting of billions of people all over the world out of poverty. Liberty's ESG report should be a model for all oil and gas companies. Recorded on June 1st, 2022 https://youtu.be/8CgDLyvds_s Episode 49 of the PetroNerds podcast is a PetroNerdy service company focused podcast with Adam Anderson, the CEO of Innovex. Trisha Curtis and Adam talk shop on oilfield services and the state of the oil market. Innovex is known to many in and outside the oil and gas industry for being the company which North Face rejected a jacket order on the basis that Innovex was involved in the oil business. (The Colorado Oil and Gas Association gave North Face an award in response, mocking them for their hypocrisy and direct support of oil and gas given most of their products are made from petroleum. Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Energy (formerly Liberty Oilfield Services) has led a campaign in Denver Colorado, purchasing billboards, thanking North Face for their oil and gas use.) Trisha and Adam talk about oilfield services in a $100 barrel market, inflation, ESG and investor pressure, the underinvestment thesis, and what is happening in the market with OPEC and Russia. Adam asks Trisha questions and they disagree a bit and debate about what is happening in the oil market. It is a great conversation and worth a listen! On June 1st, 2022 oil prices were $115.27 WTI, $116.35 Brent. Henry Hub $8.70 and Dutch TTF $/MMBTU $27. The 30 year mortgage rate was 5.57 percent.

Employment? Episode 46 of the PetroNerds podcast is the long-promised episode on everything from inflation, recession, to housing, and the US economy.  This is part 2 of a two part series where Gabby Richmond of the Denver Petroleum Club performs another PetroNerds fliparoo and interviews Trisha Curtis on the state of the US economy, inflation, and the Federal Reserve.  Trisha and Gabby discuss the Strategic Petroleum Reserve release and the impact on oil prices, high oil prices and high everything prices, inflation, oil demand, and the health of the US consumer.  They get into inflation expectations, wage price spirals, and factors that drive oil demand.  Trisha is more concerned with natural gas prices and electricity price increases and inflation than $100 oil.  "We are going to have a recession.  It is going to happen."  Trisha is asked about the Federal Reserve's response or lack of response to inflation and 50 basis point rate hikes.  Trisha and Gabby get into unemployment and the labor force and higher wages and prices getting passed along to the consumer.  And the podcast closes on US oil production and activity and the recent earnings calls of Halliburton and Liberty Oilfield Services.  Despite inflation and supply chain concerns, Trisha says "don't bet against the industry."

A substantial portion of United States policymakers and citizens tout an accelerated "energy transition" away from fossil fuels. But what does this mean? What would it entail? What are the costs associated with such a transition? And is a transition even practical or realistic? Even if the United States (or the world) were to transition away from fossil fuels entirely for electricity generation, in what other ways do fossil fuels play an integral role in modern living? These questions and many more are answered in this episode of Common Sense Digest. Chairman and Host of Common Sense Institute Earl Wright welcomes Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Oilfield Services Chris Wright and 2022 Mike A. Leprino Fellow & 2021 Terry J. Stevinson Fellow Evelyn Lim to the show to discuss the multiple factors at play regarding an energy transition. The three touch on issues including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the state of permitting and exports in the United States, regulatory policy in the country and in Colorado specifically, and the ways in which fossil fuels impact our lives beyond electricity generation. For more illustrative information on these topics and more, please review Evelyn Lim's "Colorado Faces Economic, Technological, and Even Geopolitical Barriers to Meeting Its Aggressive Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Goals" and Liberty Energy's "Bettering Human Lives: 2020 ESG Report" Thank you for listening to Common Sense Digest. Chris Wright serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Oilfield Services.  Additionally, Chris founded and serves as Executive Chairman of Liberty Resources, a Bakken-focused E&P company and Liberty Midstream Solutions. He has had a lifelong passion for energy and its role in human life. He has spoken on energy to the UK House of Lords, the States Attorneys General, Federal and State Judges, debated the merits of the shale revolution on TV and given over 100 talks. Evelyn Lim is the 2022 Mike A. Leprino Fellow & 2021 Terry J. The epic industry leader Chris Wright is on the podcast today. From creating a business around toilet seats in Ghana to CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services, “The Best Dam Frac Company”. Chris tells it all. We hear about his view on life, family, culture, people and climate change. He started Pinnacle in 92 with just 100k, building a solid network along the way. Chris is an expert at explaining technologies, which turned into his networking strategy. After 10 years he sold Pinnacle to Carbo Ceramics. Then a few years later Carbo sold Pinnacle's part of the business to HAL. Chris was never a big company guy and didn't like the idea of his baby ( Pinnacle) being taken over by HAL. He doesn't ever want the culture and long term vision of a company changing once it's sold off, this is something that Chris never wanted to happen again.Incredibly high turnover is the “norm” for oil and gas frac companies. Chris was told by a large frac company, “ We tell HR to always keep more in the Hopper”. By that they meant, more people as back up when others leave. After Chris was told this he decided it's time to start a frac company. Way before he even knew how to run one, he wanted to change the perception of frac companies and how they treated field personnel. He was driven to change the industry through culture, people and technology - Liberty was then born. Chris talks about his ESG report, “ Bettering Human Lives”. Chris expresses his feelings on energy poverty and how the oil and gas industry is the only industry that can fix it. You cannot have a modern world without oil and gas. Tune in to be mind blown. First of all, a heartfelt Happy Thanksgiving to you all! We all have much to be thankful for and here at TPH/COBT, we are particularly thankful for your friendship. Last year on Thanksgiving, we gambled and did something that was not only fun but ended up being pretty popular. We did a video featuring energy professionals working on Thanksgiving Day. We were lucky enough to get representation from Phillips 66, Diamondback, Plains All American, and Liberty Oilfield Services. I bumped into a good friend at the API Dinner a couple of weeks ago he asked if we were up to do it again. We honestly hadn't decided at that point but the more we thought about it, the more we wanted to do it. So here we go! This year's line-up showcases energy life in the field in the Permian, at a natural gas plant south of Dallas, at a control center here in Houston, and at a huge LNG facility in Louisiana. Special thanks to the executive teams at Halliburton, Calpine, and Cheniere for helping us get this done. And special thanks to the group who pulled themselves away from the important jobs they do every day to join us in a Special Thanksgiving discussion: Robert Dewitt, CalpineChristopher Jerez, HalliburtonAndrew Sleet, CheniereLuke Yardy, CalpineI don't want to spoil it because I really hope you watch... but the one thing that is inescapable in this video discussion is the determination and grit of the energy industry. It is more than a little reminiscent of the men and women in our Armed Forces. We can rely on them, their work never stops, they are big-hearted, they are smart, and they make it happen for the rest of us. You will hear in the session that we mention the Thanksgiving table and all of the relatives who might want to talk about energy. For fun, we reached out to Alex Epstein and asked him for his Thanksgiving talking points. As you will see in the attached link, Alex volunteered to help you with your Thanksgiving energy discussions. :-)Let me wrap this up and let you get back to your Thanksgiving festivities. Please enjoy the day and thank you again for your continued friendship. We would be nowhere without you. God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving holiday. All the best from the COBT Team!

A 15-billion-dollar lawsuit has hit the Biden Administration after it cancelled the Keystone XL Pipeline. The Canadian developer claims massive damages from the reversal of the Trump policy to finish the pipeline… which was a reversal of the Obama policy. After more than eight years of study and hundreds of meetings with state, local, tribal, and federal officials, the developers had their contracts destroyed when Biden killed what was the most advanced and safely designed pipeline to date; the pipeline would have delivered crude with a tiny fraction of the carbon emissions of the alternatives (Buffet's crude-by-rail or crude-by-truck). Pipelines have a safety record that is 50% better than crude-by-rail, which delivers hazardous materials safely from point A to point B literally 99.9% of the time. Is the pipeline cancellation really about the environment and safety? Or a continuation of killing U.S. energy security? Climate change is real, and mankind plays a role, but is this a problem? Will climate change bring economic disaster? Is it an existential threat? Resoundingly “No,” according to Steven Koonin, the former Undersecretary of Science in the Obama administration's Department of Energy. He recently released Jacki's favorite new book, “Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters." Koonin proves that sea levels are not surging, and that hurricanes and tornadoes have not become fierce and more frequent. Koonin is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in physics and climate science, and a professor of theoretical physics at NYU's Department of Physics, Tandon School of Engineering, and the Stern Business School. Jacki highly recommends this book. Can the judicial branch bend the executive branch to its will? Yes. “Sue and Settle” is back. When fringe elements of an activist movement cannot get their way legislatively - through the people's representatives - they forum shop for judges sympathetic to their cause.  Activists sue friendlies inside the Biden administration … who then settle. This is an end run around the legislatures and a clear violation of our federal government's separation of powers, with judges usurping the legislature's lawmaking function. It is the judiciary's job to say what the law is - not what it should be.    Then, Jacki talks with Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services, a large hydraulic fracturing (“frac'ing”) company, whose ESG report is one of the few that properly gives credit to the oil and gas industry for lifting people all over the world out of poverty. Liberty's ESG report should be a model for all oil and gas companies. Finally, Jacki discusses cybersecurity with Morgan Luttrell, retired Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Luttrell is running for Congress in Texas, and they talk about how hostile nations can mount a cyber corps to attack the vulnerable economic underbelly of the United States.

One is that he has responded to the ESG movement with a report entitled “Bettering Human Lives” that highlights the amazing benefits of the oil and gas industry, and encourages rational thinking about climate. Chris has also been making a lot of noise with a new “Thank You, North Face” billboard and video campaign. Ron grew up with a love for all things Mechanical. His father was a huge influence in his life, growing up outside of Edmonton, Canada spending most of his time either - on the farm or working with his dad, in their shop. In the early 80’s Ron experienced the impacts of a downturn had on his community. People losing their job, mortgage rates at an all time high, interest rates were through the roof and Alberta was not in a good place. Ron was not much of a risk taker and seeing the impacts of the oil industry deterred him from wanting to pursue a career in an unstable environment . His first job out of college was working in the HVAC industry as an Engineer. It didn’t take long for Ron to have a change of heart and find himself accepting a job in the oil industry. With a 50% increase in pay, he couldn’t say no. He started his career in fracking. When he started in the late 1990's fracking looked very different. Imagine this... Being home before dark, putting away one stage a day and calling that a success. Through Ron’s career he helped develop and grow the technology space in Fracking. In June 2003 he started his job at Pinnacle. He was working as a sales person, naturally introverted, this was an uncomfortable role for him. Ron talks about his experience working for Pinnacle and the lessons he learned when Halliburton bought them in 2008, this was a life changing moment for Ron. He talks about his regrets during this time. After leaving Pinnacle due to the buyout, he began embarking on new roles. Ron moved through companies during the next 8 years, trying to find the small company feel we had at Pinnacle. Each company he worked for was a learning experience that built him into the leader he is today. He talks about each of these experiences and what it taught him. In 2011 his world turned. The exact company he had been searching for appeared, Liberty. He found himself back at home with the same guys he started with at Pinnacle. Ron used his experiences from each company he worked for to build the culture of Liberty with Chris Wright. There were a few key differences they wanted for Liberty and their employees. Ron talks about how they built the reputation and culture they have today. This is one of the most important parts of Ron's story. Have you seen Liberty’s marketing? With 20,000 followers on LinkedIn and Tech Tuesday videos, Liberty is doing something right. Ron talks about the people behind their Marketing efforts and how it’s not to only promote Liberty, it's to show what the oil industry does for each one of us every day to change the way society perceives the industry. Trisha dives into the importance of $50 oil and why it is a magic number for shale, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. She also discusses the impact of a likely ban on fracing on Federal land and the pending regulations coming at the oil and gas industry. Trisha gets into the controversial weeds of shale productivity gains, frac sand, third quarter moves into natural gas by EOG and Liberty Oilfield Services, and the role of efficiency gains. They discuss the fundamentals of the oil market as of December 6th, 2020 and put oil demand in context. Peak demand, the COVID vaccine, the oil price recovery and the market's misguided understanding of demand are just of few of the many topics covered in the first and must listen to (and watch) PetroNerds podcast.

Chris Wright is the CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services, which recently became the second largest US company performing the work of drilling and completing oil and gas wells in shale formations. He is a leader in the field of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal well drilling, having been involved in the revolutionary technology development since the days when George Mitchell was stubbornly experimenting in the Barnett Shale. Among those who focus on the energy industry and attempt to understand its current situation in order to gain some insights into the future, the growing natural gas supply in the US gets a lot of attention. Cheap natural gas gets credit for a steady drop in annual US CO2 emissions as it has pushed a growing amount of coal out of the market. That same product – cheap natural gas – has also been blamed for reducing revenues enough at a number of existing nuclear plants to push their owners into closing the plants for economic reasons. Despite successful efforts to reduce operating costs at those plants, shrinking top-line revenue from selling electricity into low-priced wholesale markets means they do not make enough money to meet corporate goals. After hearing Chris Wright on Robert Bryce's excellent Power Hungry podcast, I realized it would be worthwhile to invite him onto the Atomic Show to provide a deeper explanation of the revolution in natural gas production. Chris gets into some deep technical details about how technology has dramatically improved in his field. He explains how competition and a relentless focus on providing a better product has driven that improvement. He is justifiably proud of the benefits that his industry has provided to the world, but he also provides some important support and advice to people who are working to improve nuclear fission energy. It might surprise many, including some of Chris's colleagues, to learn that Chris describes himself as a huge supporter of nuclear fission energy. He provides some compliments and some tough love for those of us who are working to improve the technology's chances of competing and serving customer needs. I think you will thoroughly enjoy listening to Chris's thoughts about energy and its importance for human development and prosperity. As always, I'm interested in hearing what you think. I'm pretty sure this show will provoke some deep thinking in what might be completely new directions, so I'd like you to share some of those thoughts.

On The Digital Closing Bell, Michael Tanner and myself have had the opportunity to use Liberty as a industry leadership example for our listeners on how oil field service management should handle their corporate obligations to all of their stakeholders. Ron covers some of the key differentials of the Liberty, culture, employee programs, and management leadership. They are constantly striving to hit the stated goals for all participating stakeholders. Liberty has been in front of the ESG curve, even before it was fashionable. Anyone that believes in their frac fluid is environmentally sound, should prove it. Well the team did just that, they lined up and drank the fluid on a video. That's commitment to the environment. This interview was clearly fun for both Ron and Michael, and covered all of the updates from Liberty. Thank you Ron for stopping by, we had a blast. With the decline in commodity prices, oilfield operators find themselves looking for more efficient ways of producing oil and natural gas. But the question many people in the industry end up asking themselves is what actually works? Big data has ushered in new ideas and means of creating efficiency in the oil patch, and it’s taken hold in several areas of exploration and production. In this first episode of the DUG Technology podcast with Hart Energy’s chief technical director, Richard Mason, who serves as host of the DUG Technology series, and Jessica Morales, we dive deep into the opportunities big data presents to shale players. But what is DUG Technology? In 2018, Hart Energy conferences added new technical content to its second-day agendas at DUG Permian Basin, DUG East, DUG Eagle Ford and DUG Midcontinent. This programming features regionally-focused and technologically-driven sessions. Expert panels, technical spotlights and roundtable discussions cover a range of topics, including: • Proppants; • Well stimulation practices; • Water sourcing, treatment and reuse; • Completion optimization; and • Artificial intelligence In our first episode, Jessica and Richard look back at the first DUG Technology held during DUG Permian Basin in Fort Worth, Texas, in May.
