Mike Evans is the creator DIY RPG Productions, author of Hubris (an incredibly and wonderfully bizarre weird fantasy setting for DCC RPG), Death is the New Pink, Barbarians of the Ruined Earth, and a lot more! But Mike is a lot more than that also! Mike Evans moved to Rochester, NY in 2013 after his wife received her PhD in Toxicology at Rutgers University and took a post doctorate position at URMC. Mike has been working in the non-profit sector for nearly a decade, serving as Director of Operations at Rochester Childfirst Network (RCN) and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester, before becoming the Executive Director of the South East Area Coalition in October 2020. Recently Mike created a new tool lending library program, SEAC's Tool Shed, which serves the Greater Rochester Area. Mike has lived all over the country: Wyoming, Nebraska, California, Montana, New Jersey and now New York, “Rochester is a great place to live. I'm happy to call this my home.” Mike enjoys grunge and punk rock music, kayaking, biking, hiking, Star Wars, drumming, video games and writing. He currently runs his own publication company and has written seven books. Mike is passionate about diversity, equality, and inclusion because, “only once we're all equal and included, can we truly be rid of oppression and hate. I grew up idolizing Star Trek: Next Generation; all species, beliefs, cultures, views, etc. were discussed, accepted, and celebrated. That's where we need to head.” We had a great chat talking about trying to be a good person, trying to make games, coming with terms we are not doing this full time, his new projects, inspirations, weird experiences and a lot more! Mike Umbro (FieldView Capital) a San Diego native, and an Operator in California joined me to have a conversation about what it's like as an operator trying to operate in California. Recently Mike has been very active on social media as an energy, environment, and oil & gas advocate. Showcasing the realities of when poor policy leads to higher cost, more pollution, more dependance, and a disadvantage to people in lower income households. We discussed what we have to do as an industry to have real energy conversations with people outside our industry. Fighting uphill battles, bureaucracy, stagnation and stalling of permits, while they are sitting on some of the biggest oil reserves and what that could do for the people of California. As someone who has been a voice of the realities of energy expectations versus energy reality, very excited to have had this convo with him, and looking forward to seeing what he's going to do not just for the California Energy industry, but domestic energy as well!

Recently Mike, the writing expert here at FLOW, shared his thoughts about writer's block and how to get around it. He joked playfully that a friend recently said of writer's block "It's just an excuse not to write." In all honesty, Mike writes for a living so he knows a thing or two about how to get around the dreaded blank page. His advice, "[You] need to change your state. In my case, if I've been sitting in front of a screen for a while. I just get up and walk around and go out, maybe go outside of it's a nice day. And you can do this for like five minutes and just take your eyes off the screen, and you come back, and it's like looking at everything new." Wow, simple yet effective. Get up and away from the writing for a few minutes or even longer and when you come back the words are all new. From this fresh perspective, you can easily add, edit, or finalize any piece of writing.
Admittedly the last 8 months have been rough on most of the world. Who could have imagined we’d be here, in a real-life pandemic? It’s straight out of a sci-fi movie. We’ve been dealing with restrictions, lockdowns, isolation, and businesses closing, evolving, and changing on a dime. It hasn’t been easy... But believe it or not, right NOW is one of the greatest opportunities in human history to actually amplify your capabilities using a concept Dan Sullivan and Mike Koenigs call “The Talent Stack.” Today on the podcast they'll let you in on exactly what “The Talent Stack” is and how you can use it to your advantage, but want they really want to share with you is how to make someone's dream come true by being able to create “stacks” of value that have higher perceived value than you could ever imagine. There are a few ways of thinking about this concept. First, imagine if you had the ability to stack value in a way to give your client, what feels like to them, more choices when in fact what you're doing is putting them inside a container so they can only choose you. It’s a way of thinking about your talents through the perspective of, how do you take value, put it in a container, then position it so you can charge 10 times more for what you're doing by changing the way your prospective clients think. Here's a little backstory to give you some perspective. Recently Mike worked with a new client who designs supplement ingredients and proprietary, patented ingredients. (in the supplement world, if you get someone to use your ingredient, you get paid royalties) In his case, his products have been in billions of dollars of different products and services. Come to find out, he’s been scheduled to be on the Joe Rogan podcast! (for anyone who isn't familiar with Joe Rogan, he has about 10 million subscribers on YouTube and hundreds of millions of downloads. It's in the top three of all podcasts in the world right now.) It just so happens that Mike's fantasized about being on the Joe Rogan podcast himself and he knew that his client being on Joe's show was going to change his life FOREVER. Mike's studied Joe and his show. He’s a guy who's very specific. He wants great guests but you've really got to earn your way into his world and some of that has to do with having shared experiences, shared relationships, and shared values. So Mike and his client sat down and watched some of Joe’s highest-rated episodes that had to do with personal development, personal growth, food, or nutrition and one thing that happens on Joe's podcast with a great guest is they come in with props and gifts. One big idea Mike came up with for his client’s appearance on Joe’s show was to order him a custom set of knives with a unique quote (that Joe said) on each one because Joe's a hunter and eats what he kills. Hunting is a spiritual experience for Joe and this unique gift shows that he’s done his homework and has a shared value. A deeper, more significant concept is an “artifact.” To explain... Mike's client is in the business of creating different kinds of supplements and nutritional products that you consume. So what they designed was a whole bunch of “stacks” that are good for you and meaningful to Joe. (like a longevity or gamer stack.) When Mike's client walks in with a box of super fascinating stacks, designed specifically for Joe that aren't available anywhere else… how do you think Joe and his audience will react? It naturally shows off Mike's client’s talents and skill set to the world and creates a deep bond and connection with Joe. It's hyper personalized and packaged in a way that’s meaningful. Mike's client truly has a goal to improve the quality of mankind and to develop a relationship with Joe that is not manipulative or yucky. He wants to be asked back someday, right? These stacks will help him accomplish those goals. To hear the rest of the podcast where they go deep into the definitions of “stacks...

In our first episode of Season 4 we change things up a bit by including a third co-host in each show of the season. And first up is our close friend and colleague – Mike Phillips who mentors people on developing leadership through action with his podcast – The Front, and YouTube channel – LeadTheTeam.tv. Recently Mike produced a video for his YouTube channel title, How to Increase Leadership Capacity. In the video, Mike offers four tips, one of which we make the primary talking point in this conversation: Focusing on your strengths and weaknesses. View the original live stream on YouTube.
Mike Hohnen is one of the unsung heroes in the creative world. Being a journalist or writer, especially in music, can be a bit of a thankless job at times. It can be unfairly seen as a mechanism and necessity for artists to have their work marketed and promoted to wider audiences through popular media channels. Some of this is due to outlets resorting to a churn and burn approach that spits out run-of-the-mill, stock standard media. A lot of it as a result falls into the ever growing void of content or tactics used via buzz style headlines creates a magnet for undeserved attention. It's not all bad news of course and many writers don't fall into the above (could be argued) hyperbole. Mike is one of these standouts and has been writing for the past several years not only covering music but various pop culture and social topics. Cutting his teeth with popular press outlets such as Music Feeds and working as a journalist with some of the world's best artists, Mike eventually moved into a more freelance capacity and has been doing impressive work as a individually celebrated writer and journalist. Over the years of building experience, Mike has continued to grow and develop a thirst to dig deeper beneath the surface, writing meaningful content that not only opens up the floor to important conversation but also acts as an aid toward finding similarities in what might be seen as unrelated niche interest groups. Recently Mike and a friend/fellow writer Chris Schilbach who's a big MMA fan decided to blend their talents together and create The Neversphere. A portal where the guys can share "high quality, engaging content about music, gaming and MMA, opening the conversation to those who are passionate about their chosen art." The guys in particular highlight that "The Neversphere provides a meeting ground for similar, yet seemingly disconnected arts." While still in it's infancy stage, the guys have been able to use the website to showcase their interests and unique writing style in a way which acts as an liberated outlet for them personally, but also provides gateway and cross over content to bring different groups together. One really cool thing about our chat is Mike's passion for bringing together different interests and thinking outside the box. We're in an era now in music where a lot of musicians are trying to find unorthodox ways of bringing their music to new audiences. Whether it be music featured in gaming, MMA (both covered on The Neversphere) or in an unexpected or previously ignored format, the conversation is continuing to be had and many are finding the courage to blend their creative output with other communities and methods. This is to not only promote but to also remove divides and bring people together. Mike is a big proponent of this and encourages more open thinking and conversation this through his own work. If you're a writer or someone aspiring to be, you may get a real kick out of this episode. Mike and I cover a lot of his own journey into the media and his challenges along the way but also how his perspective and work ethic has changed and improved as the years have progressed. We dig in deep to the freelance culture and Mike shares some great tips on how he stays on top of everything and continues to find the fire to keep producing content in what could be seen as an era of saturated information, both good and bad. Mike Boldea was born in a small northern Romanian Village. At the age of nine, his entire family was deported from Romania for smuggling Bibles. His grandfather, Dumitru Duduman started an outreach ministry called "Hand of Help" of which Mike is now Chairman. Mike has traveled internationally with Dumitru for over 11 years acting as Dumitru's translator. They shared their testimonies, as well as an important message God gave Dumitru for the United States. Recently Mike has translated the book entitled "Life In Christ" which Dumitru had penned prior to his death. The testimonies of those that were persecuted for their faith must live on to build up the body of Christ. Mike continues to operate in his gift as an Evangelist to exhort the body of Christ to present itself with a garment clean before our Lord. Michael has a strong Christian heritage coming from a line of 4 generations of Christians. In the village of Hinceste Romania his Great grandfather was one of the first Christians converted there and his grandfather was a pastor and his father pastors the "Messiah" church in Botosani Romania with over 800 members. Their family worked with Richard Wurmbrandt, Harlan Popoff, and brother Andrew taking bibles to the underground Church. Michael has seen the presence of God in accomplishing the work that his family was called to. In the face of great persecution and opposition thousands of bibles were given to the Christians of Romania even though it was punishable by imprisonment if caught. His grandfather Dumitru Duduman did suffer greatly being imprisoned for his faith. Under extreme torture he never recanted his faith and stands as a witness of faithfulness to this day in Romania.
