We are starting a new series in the Gospel of Mark. Now you may not be able to attend and watch all of the services but I encourage you to watch as many as you can because it'll be relevant. So if you have your Bibles and you should, please turn to the Gospel of Mark starting with Chapter 1. Now while you're turning there, let me say that it is long-held belief that John Mark wrote Mark. There's nothing internally that says that other than there's a discussion when Jesus is arrested that there was one of the minor followers who escaped and they grabbed his coat and clothing and he ran out and was somewhat naked. Some people think that that was that person, but may or may not have been. The early church fathers discussed and they believe it was Mark who wrote the Gospel. Others think that Mark wrote it either based on his discussion with Peter or as Peter had been martyred that he wanted to make sure that what Peter had experienced in the teaching and life of the Lord that he wrote that down. Sermon Notes Mark 1:1 – 3 The prophesy of one who will prepare Mesiah's way Mark 1:4 – 8 John the Baptizer is that preparing one & testifies about the Coming One Mark 1:9 – 11 Heaven testifies of Jesus as the Son of God Mark 1:12 & 13 Jesus impelled to go into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan Mark 1:14 & 15 Jesus preaches the gospel Mark 1:16 – 20 Jesus calls His initial disciples Mark 1:21 & 22 Jesus' amazing teaching Mark 1:23 – 27 Jesus does not allow unclean spirits to speak of Him Mark 1:28 The news of Jesus spreads immediately everywhere
During this time of the Christmas season, you'll see a lot of manger scenes and you'll see a baby in that manger. Today we're going to talk about who that baby was and is and what he is going to do service when it's after the 25th? Well, let me tell you there's a couple of reasons why. Sermon Notes Isaiah 9:2 – 5 From darkness to light, gladness increased and enemies defeated Isaiah 9:6 & 7 A Child shall be born, who is God and He will reign in peace Luke 2:1 – 20 A Child is born who is Christ the Lord Revelation 22:1 – 5 The Lamb shall sit upon the throne in heaven
We tend to be very complex people, but in complexity, it is something that we know well when we're able to take that complex thing and make it simple. You probably know yourself better than anyone else. So I would suggest that you think about writing a few sentences, saying just exactly who you are and maybe a brief paragraph as to an event that typifies that. We're going to take a look at Joseph and an event in his life and a few sentences that describes exactly who he is. Who he is is describe who you are? Not what you've done, but who you are. And then take maybe one event in your life that would simplify that question, could you do it? Proclamation of the Word Message by Pastor Joe “Obedience” Sermon Notes Matthew 1:18-25 Acts 5:27-32 Romans 6:15-18 Romans 16:25-26 1 Peter 1:22
Sermon Notes Luke 1:26 – 37 What the Lord has planned for Mary Luke 1:38 Behold the bond-servant of the Lord, Humble and submissive James 4:6 & 7 Be humble and submit to God Matthew 25:14 – 30 We are Christ's slaves and will be rewarded or condemned by our use of His talents What if you were asked by God to do something that you thought was impossible? But if you agreed to it, you could be subject to a very painful death or at minimum being ostracized by your community and losing the relationships with people very close to you. Would you say yes or would you say no? It's easy to ask that question when those consequences aren't facing us. We're going to take a look at someone today in the Bible who was asked that very question. And we will see the response, not only just the response, but the humility to things, and sometimes there's a reaction that may or may not be justified. So I'll give you an example of personally.
We're talking about baptism today. We're going to talk about what it means to be baptized, who are the people to be baptized, and why is it we do it, and what is the mode or the mechanism for baptism. So I encourage you to come and listen to baptism talk today about baptism. I'm going to make some statements that probably you will agree with. I'm going to make a particular one statement that you're going to go, "huh?" And then I'll show you what the scriptures say about all of this and then we'll be a little more educated on why Baptists look at baptism in a particular way. So the word baptism or what does it mean? It means to dip or to immerse. So that's the meaning and that's why Baptists dip or immerse as a form of baptism and I'll flush that out a little further. Sermon Notes Baptize Means to dip or immerse Baptism Is not a sacrament Matthew 3:13 –17 Jesus our example Matthew 28:16 – 20 Jesus commanded us to be and do Colossians 2:9 – 14 What baptism means – shows what Christ did Acts 8:25 – 39` An example of one person baptized Acts 16:25 – 34 An example of a family being baptized
Some people say that it doesn't matter what you believe so long as you're sincere. I sincerely disagree with that. I think it's very important what you believe and only should you believe that you should have conviction in it. We're going to be talking about the Lord's Supper, something that was initiated during Jesus' ministry and his last Passover celebration with his disciples. It's funny in that initial celebration of what he has told us to celebrate, there are so many different views and doctrines on it. We're going to take a look at what the Bible says and take a look at some of the various views of it. But I want you to understand that conviction is important. There was a gentleman in the 13th century and the 15th century England who had a different view of what we're doing than the church. They imprisoned him for a year hoping that he would be camped. And then they put him on a stake to burn and gave him an opportunity to recount. And he did it because he believed with conviction his position on this celebration. So I'm going to encourage you to find out what the scriptures say what we're celebrating, and to talk about what other denominations and others teach so that we have a better idea of why it is we believe what we believe. So I want to start off with something that's really not per se in the Scriptures. Sermon Notes Lord Supper contained in Passover Seder Matthew 26:26 – 30 Jesus initiates the Lord's Supper Elements are unleavened bread and wine/red grape juice 1 Corinthians 11:23 – 34 The remembrance of it as Paul wax taught by Christ
Thankfulness. There seems to be several stages in thankfulness. As parents or perhaps when we were children, our parents taught us to be polite and say thank you when somebody gave us something. And then because we hear things like to live a thankful life, it makes you more happy, and so you hear people talk about an attitude of gratitude and that they are thankful for, like I'm thankful for my family or I'm thankful for my health. But there are at least two more stages of thankfulness that the Bible talks about, that people rarely really include in their thankfulness. I encourage you to listen to this message as life. Sermon Notes Psalm 92:1 – 4 It is good to thank God 1 Thessalonians 5:18 It is God's will to give thanks Ephesians 5:20 Give thanks always 1 Chronicles 16:8 – 12 & 23 – 35 An example of praising God
The title of today's message is "Jesus Didn't Die for Our Mistakes." If that sounds a little odd to you because you've been listening to current Christian music, I encourage you to listen to today's message, especially if you think that maybe I'm wrong. I want you to see what the Bible has to say about Jesus dying, not for our mistakes, is, is to say that's the way we've always done it. I remember many decades ago our congregation was deciding whether we would keep 11 o'clock as our worship time, or move it to 10, and there were two main arguments to keep it at 11 o'clock. One was, because that's the way we always did it, the second was, well some other member of our denomination who may be traveling would get the wrong time. Sermon Notes Ephesians 2:1 We were dead in our trespasses and sins Romans 3:23 All have sinned and come short of God's glory Romans 5:6 – 8 While we were still sinners Christ died for us Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death 1 John 1:5 – 10 Denying our sins simply is self-delusional Romans 10:8 – 13 Confession and belief results in salvation Ephesians 2:4 – 9 Saved by grace through faith
As a general rule, it is wise to always look forward. And you will get people who will give you advice that we always need to be forward-thinking and forward-looking. However, there are times and exceptions, if you will, when it's a good idea to turn around and look to see what's been behind. The Scriptures will tell us a good example of why we should, on occasion, look to see what was behind. Sermon Notes Psalm 23:6a It is certain that goodness & lovingkindness by God will follow me always Romans 8:28 God causes all things to work for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose Psalm 86:13 –15 God is merciful and abundant in lovingkindness Psalm 23:6b I will dwell in God's house forever John 14:1 – 6 Jesus confirms this promise Ephesians 3:14 –19 Paul prays that we might comprehend God's great love toward us
My wife was an excellent host or hostess when we would have a meal like let's say Thanksgiving she would make sure that everyone had a place setting and a seat at a table and Even at the last minute if we had additional guests or not people we invited late She would bring in additional tables and chairs to make sure everyone had a place to sit not only this she would also Prepare an abundance of food and she did so not because we like Leftovers because quite frankly generally I don't but we wanted to make sure that everyone felt that they could eat is They're filled without having to limit what they're eating so that it might go throughout everybody But the most important thing she did was to make sure that everybody felt invited and welcomed being there The psalmist in Psalm 23 in chapter verse 5 is going to talk about God as host Let's see how Sermon Notes Psalm 23:5a God prepares a table for me while my enemies see it Song of Solomon 2:4 God brings me to His banquet hall and His banner over me is love Psalm 23:5b God anoints my head with oil 1 Samuel 16:12 & 13 Samuel anoints David as instructed Luke 7:44 – 46 A woman anoints Jesus' feet with perfume and kisses James 5:14 Anoint the sick Psalm 45:7 Because you loved righteousness and hated wickedness God anointed you above your fellow Psalm 23:5 c My cup overflows Matthew 26:39 Jesus asks for “this cup” to pass from Him Psalm 16:5 The Lord is my cup Psalm 116:12 & 13 Because of the Lord's benefits to me I will lift up my cup of salvation and call upon His name
It seems in today's world pronouns have come into great controversy, but in simplest level when I'm talking about myself me, I use a word I, me, my. If I'm talking about somebody who's not in my presence I will usually use he or she. So for instance if somebody's not in my presence I go he's a nice young man or she's going to graduate college. I'm talking about somebody who's not present but I'm referencing them. We're going to take a look today at Psalm 23 verse 4 that has a very significant change in what happens. The Psalmist says in the beginning, "The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. He guides me the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." But now the Psalmist is going to change and talk about two things that are very significant related to fear that most people have that's going to come across in all of our lives. So see what the two things that the Psalmist talks about that gives us comfort at afraid of? Sermon Notes Psalm 23:4a Moving through the valley of the shadow of death Psalm 107:10 – 16 God saves from the shadow of death John 3:16 Whoever believes will not perish but have eternal life John 11:25 & 26 Jesus is the resurrection and the life 1 Corinthians 15:50 – 57 Death is defeated and we have the victory through Christ Job 19:23 – 27 My eyes shall see my Redeemer Psalm 23:4b Do not fear harm/evil because YOU God are with me Romans 8:35 – 39 Nothing not even death separates us from God Psalm 23::4c Both God's rod and staff comfort Micah 7:14 May He shepherd His people with His scepter
A few years ago, my wife and I and some founding members took a trip to Boston. But before we went, my wife booked a travel, I mean a tour guide. And that tour guide took us around Boston to certain historical points and other points of interest. And he was able to do so because he knew the city and he knew about the various points of interest and gave explanation. He knew what he was doing and he took us directly and we didn't have a circuitous route. We went to the most direct route, not wasting any time. The psalmist talks about the shepherd and the shepherd is going to guide him. But this guidance is far more important than going on a trip to someplace. It's about a trip in eternity. See what the shepherd does? Sermon Notes Psalm 23:3a Jesus restores (returns to the original condition) my soul Genesis 1:26 & 27 God made us in His image Psalm 23b Jesus gives direction in the road of righteousness Romans 1:17 The righteous live by faith Matthew 7:13 & 14 The gate iand the road are narrow that leads to life John 14:2 – 6 Jesus is the Way and you only get to the Father through Him Psalm 5:8 Wants the Lord to lead him in Righteousness Psalm 23c Seeks these things because of Jesus' name so that the name of the Lord will not suffer Exodus 32:7 – 14 Moses tells God that God's name will suffer if He destroys Israel and starts over Psalm 29:2 Give the glory due His name
We are taking a serious look at Psalm 23. The first verse the psalmist talked about that the Lord is His shepherd and hopefully He is our shepherd as well. But on the next three verses he's going to talk about the benefits of the Lord being His shepherd. We're going to take a look at the first verse of those three verses to see the provision that God has given us Sermon Notes Psalm 23:2a The Lord makes me lie down in green pastures Psalm 79:13 We are the sheep of His pasture Ezekiel 34:14 & 15 God will feed His people and give them rest Matthew 11:28 & 29 Come to Jesus and find rest Psalm 23:2b The Lord leads beside quite waters John 4:10 Jesus gives living waters John 7:37 – 39 Thirsty – come to Jesus and from your inner most will flow rivers of living water Revelation 7:17 The Lamb will guide us to springs of the water of life Psalm 46:1 – 9 For with God is the fountains of life
I want you to imagine, or maybe you actually are, a classic piano player. The first time anybody heard you play any music, it was this classical music. But yet you had the same kind of talent in other musical instruments and even in your voice. So perhaps you were an outstanding guitar player as well as a singer. But every time people saw you, they wanted you to play classical piano. That's kind of the way Psalm 23 is. And we're going to take an in-depth look at Psalm 23, because usually when people hear it, it's during a funeral or a memorial service. But the comfort and the provision and the guidance of God is more than just during death and eternity. It talks about leading us, guiding us, and providing for us. So come along as we study Psalm 23 and what it speaks to us who are alive. Sermon Notes Psalm 23:1b The Lord is my Shepherd John 10:7 – 10 Jesus is the door for the sheep to go in and out to find pasture John 10:11 – 13 Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects His sheep John 10:14 – 18 He knows His sheep and they know Him. He lays down His life for the sheep and picks it back up again Psalm 23B A statement of faith nothing is needed
I want you to imagine you might have been in this situation. You're a salesman and your sales have been trending down. Or perhaps you're in the machine shop and your widgets, many of them are having to be scrapped. And then you get a note from the owner of the business that says that they want to see you at the end of the day. I would pretty much imagine that you'd be really nervous that you are going to have to talk to the owner of the business because at this point you weren't performing as what others thought you ought to. Sermon Notes II Corinthians 5:10 All believers must appear I Corinthians 3:10 – 15 Be careful how you build
There was a man named Saul who was later his name changed was Paul wrote a letter to the church at Philippine and he said that he had great confidence in who he was and what he had accomplished. And yet he makes a very strange comparison to that. Great work that he had done and the significance of who he was. And that balance between that and having faith in Jesus. Come and listen to that startling comparison of what he thinks about that accomplishment that he had done versus his faith. If you have your. Bibles. Then you should turn to Philippians Chapter 3 and we're going to start with verse 7. Now while you're turning to that. Want you to. Understand that. We used to hear a lot about. Work life balance. And people wanting to make sure that that their work didn't so consumed them, that it totally occupied their their life and they tried to to do a balance and then today you hear a lot about quiet quitting. Sermon Notes Philippians 3:7 & 8 The loss of everything is counted gain when knowing Christ Philippians 3:9 Not only knowing Christ but being found in Him Philippians 3:10 A prayer that might know Him, power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings being conformed to His death Philippians 3:11 To obtain the resurrection of the dead
Most Christians think that worship comprised of going to church, singing some worship songs, and in some traditions raising your hands while you're singing them. Some who feel even more spiritual sing worship songs while they're at home or in the car. However, the Bible talks more of worship in a broader sense than just praising God with our voices. Come and listen to what the Bible talks about true worship beyond just hymn singing. Sermon Notes Romans 12:1 Worship also means presenting your body as a living and holy sacrifice to God Romans 12:2 We are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds Romans 8:5 – 8 The mind set on the flesh is hostile to God, dead and cannot please God Ephesians 4:17 - 24 Lay aside your old self like a garment and put on a new self by your mind 1Corinthians 2:16 We have the mind of Christ
The Bible discusses a topic, especially in the book of Job, that you've probably observed in your life. That good things happen to good people, bad things happen to good people, good things happen to bad people, and bad things happen to bad people, as well as good. However, the Scriptures talk about another group of people and the promise that God makes to them. Come and listen to who that group of people is and what the promise of God is. Sermon Notes Romans 8:28 God causes everything to work for good if you love Him and are called to His purpose Romans 8:29 & 30 God working to make you better Romans 8:31 If God is for us nothing is against us Romans 8:32 Since God did not spare Jesus there is no wayf He will not give you good things Romans 8:33 Wo will bring an accusation against us because God justifies Romans 8:34 Who can condemn because Jesus intercedes Romans 8:35 – 39 Nothing can separate you from the love of God. Paul gives a list showing no separation from God's love
When public prayer and private prayer was removed from public school, many religious people's response was, "There will always be prayer in school as long as there are tests." The reason for that is that people usually pray when there's a felt need, and the stronger the felt need, the more fervent the prayer. So for instance, even in a combat situation when it gets hot and heavy, many agnostics or even atheists who are unsure or convinced there's no God will reach out and pray that God might save them or keep them from harm. We tend to pray with there is felt needs. However, the Bible suggests that we pray more than that, and it also tells us how to be effective in that prayer and how God helps us. So I would ask you to come and listen to what the Bible says about prayer and how to be effective. Sermon Notes 1 Thessalonians 5:17 & 18 Do not stop praying James 4:3 Don't get because ask with wrong motives Romans 8:26 & 27When we do not know how to pray the Spirit does it for us because it intercedes according to the will of God Matthew 6:9 – 13 The Lord's teaching on prayer
Unfortunately, we are very politically divided, so this example I'm going to suggest that whoever happens to be the president is a person you voted for and supported. But let's say this person just was inaugurated, and then you get contacted shortly thereafter that they want to meet you, but not only do they want to meet you, they want to meet you in the Oval Office, and they want to discuss with you what your concerns are and what your needs are. I'm pretty certain you would make sure that you are able to go to that White House, go to that Oval Office, and discuss your problems with the president. Someone far greater than the president, with far more power than the president, has sent you a letter with the very same topics. You can see what that greater person is and how he wants to discuss with you your needs. Hebrews 4:14 & 15 Jesus understands what we are going through, yet without sine Hebrews 4:16 Because of that we can go directly to the Throne of Grace (God) with confidence and get help Hebrews 7:25 Jesus save forever to those who draw near to God because He intercedes for us James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you
The Roman Empire developed a mechanism to execute people. It was called crucifixion. It was a cruel, painful, and shameful way to die. But that's how they treated their criminals, their insurrectionists, and anybody else who might defy them. Almost 2,000 years ago, Jesus was crucified. But he wasn't crucified as a criminal. Even the one who judged him Pilate said that he found no fault in him. The concept of crucifixion has come to us when you'll hear people say, "Well, I'm being crucified," which usually means that they're being attacked or judged improperly. The Scriptures talk about crucifixion as well, but it has an entirely different view towards crucifixion. So come and listen to this message on crucified to see what the Bible says about it. Sermon Notes Galatians 2:20 Crucified with Christ yet I live Galatians 5:24 Passions and desires crucified Galatians 6:14 The world has been crucified to me and I to the world Luke 9:23 – 26 Pick up your cross and follow Him
You will frequently hear parents say that they want their children to be happy. Well, the Father in heaven wants more than your happiness. As a matter of fact, He wants not only for your happiness, but it was something greater than that and it is His will. Come and listen to what the Father's will is for your life that is greater than happiness. Sermon Notes 1 Thessalonians 5:16 – 18 God's will is to rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks Philippians 4:4 We are to rejoice in the Lord always James 1:2 – 4 Rejoice in various trials it produces endurance Matthew 5:11 & 12 Rejoice when you are persecuted because of Jesus, you will have a great reward in heaven
There seems to be today a overburden of anxiety. People are anxious for personal things like finance or health or family situations. Other people are anxious because of climate change or overpopulation or whatever the worldwide problem might be. There seems to be a lot of self-help books on how to deal with anxiety, but they don't seem to help. I encourage you as we take a look today at what the Bible says about being anxious and how to deal with it. Sermon Notes Philippians 4:6 – 8 Don't be anxious and how to avoid it Matthew 6:24 – 34 Don't worry, it does not help
Knowledge is a wonderful thing. We know what we know. There are times that we know what we don't know. And unfortunately, there are times when we don't know what we don't know. John is going to write a letter to believers about eternal life. He's going to tell us something that we can know, but unfortunately, many believers don't know that they know this. So come and listen to what John writes, that we believers can have in Jesus. Sermon Notes 1 John 5:13 Knowing you have eternal life Matthew 7:21 – 23 He never knew them Romans 8:16 & 17 The Spirit bears witness with our spirit Psalm 51:10 – 13 Restore the joy of salvation
You've probably heard it said, or maybe you've even said it yourself, "Don't judge me." Someone says that usually because they're pretty sure that the outcome of that judgment is negative, that for some reason that they didn't act or say the right things and don't want to hear that condemnation. The Scripture is going to talk about two different types of people, those who are judged and those who aren't. Let me listen to how to be on one group or the other. Is one in which I try to take scriptures that are bite-sized, something that you can easily memorize, so that when you are dealing with life, that these scriptures will come to memory and you will defeat the liar. Sermon Notes Romans 8:1 Now those in Jesus are not condemned John 3:14 – 18 Those who do not believe in Jesus are condemned already, it is not the rejection of Jesus
Some of those popular books and bookshops are self-help books. People are always trying to improve their lives, whether it's to become rich, to influence friends, become, make friends. There's always people seeming to want to better their lives. However, they rarely talk about and look at how to live and be righteous. There is a book that talks about that and how to live that way and I'll become that way. Let's see what a righteous person lives. Sermon Notes Romans 1:17 Quoting Habakkuk 2:4 Genesis 15:1 – 5 God's promise to Abram Genesis 15:6 Abram's response and God's response to Abram's response Hebrews 11:1 & 2 Approval by God is faith Hebrews 11:6 Without faith it is impossible to please God
There are a couple of common expressions about circumstances. One is keeping up with the Joneses. There's a sense of our circumstances being at least the same as someone else. The other common expression is, "I complained that I had no shoes until I saw a person with no feet." That's an attempt to say that we feel bitter about ourselves because our circumstances isn't as bad as others. Jesus is going to tell Peter about his destiny.
Jesus is going to ask Peter the same question three times. We're going to see that there's a lot of discussion about why Jesus did that, but very little discussion on why it was important for you and me. So let us see what Jesus asked Peter and the question we should ask ourselves. John 21:15 Jesus asks Peter do you love Me and Peter answers Yes. Jesus tells him to “Tend MY lambs” John 21:16 Jesus asks Peter a second time “Do you love Me”. Peter again responds Yes. Jesus tells him to “Shepherd My sheep” John 21:17 Jesus aks Peter a third time, Peter is grieved and responds the same and Jesus tells him to “Tend My sheep” 1 John 3:13 - 18 Love is not words it is deeds 1 John 4:19 We love because He first loved us
The Gospel of John records four different occasions when Jesus appears as the resurrected one. Three times he appears with his disciples. This time it's substantially different from the other times that John records. Come see what the difference is when the disciples have breakfast with the risen one. Sermon Notes John 21:1 Jesus appears to His disciples again John 21:2 & 3 Peter with 6 other disciples agree to go fishing, but catch nothing John 21:4 & 5 Jesus on the beach asked knowing they had caught nothing said to them “.. you do not have any fish do you?” and they answer no John 21:6 Jesus tells them to cast their net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch. They did so and caught so many they could not bring the net into the boat John 21:7 John recognized Jesus, told Peter and Peter put his outer garment back on and jumped into the sea John 21:8 The rest of the disciples brought the boat and the fish back to land John 21:9 Jesus already had a charcoal fire with fish and bread and ask them to bring some of the fish they had caught John 21:11 Peter went to help draw up the net and there were 153 fish, but the net had not torn John 21:12 Jesus feeds them breakfast. This is the third time Jesus had appeared to them
There is a common expression, "seeing is believing," but when Thomas was told by his fellow disciples that they had seen the Lord, he refused to believe but said, "Not only must I see, but I must touch the wounds that he had." Jesus will later tell Thomas that there are certain benefits by believing but not seeing. Let's see what Jesus talks about in this situation. John 20:19 & 20 Jesus appears in the room where the disciples are even though the doors were shut, shows His wounds and they rejoice John 20:21 Jesus tells them as the Father sent Him, He is sending them John 20:22 Ahe breathed on them and said “Receive the Holy Spirit John 20:23 Forgiving and retaining sins John 20:24 & 25 Thomas was not with the other disciples and even though they tell him they have seen the Lord, he refuses to believe unless he sees the wounded hands and put his finger in Jesus' side John 20:26 & 27 8 days later Jesus gives Thomas the opportunity to do as Thomas demanded John 20:28 Thomas responds “My Lord and my God” John 20:29 Jesus tells him “Blessed are those who believe but have not seen”
Scriptures tell us that he rises from the dead and there are other scriptures so we have reasons. So no I was not there to see the empty tomb myself and I have yet to see it but I believe those who have seen it and I believe those who have written of it and I believe that the word of God has demonstrated he has risen from the dead and that his spirit testifies to my spirit that he is God and they raised him from the dead. When I take all of those combined I can firmly say I walk by faith not by sight but I walk by faith with reason not with just superstition. So if he rose from the dead and he did what does that mean for you and me? Sermon Notes John 20:1 & 2 Mary Magdalene went to the tomb while it was still dark, saw the stone rolled away and assumed someone took Jesus' body John 20:3 – 8 Peter and John run to the tomb after being told that Jesus' body was missing, entered into the tomb, did not find the body, but found the linen wrappings John 20:9 They didn't understand the Scriptures about Jesus rising from the dead John 20:10 Peter and John went home John 20:11 – 14 Mary while weeping looked into the tomb and saw two angels, who ask her why she is weeping John 20:15 Jesus asks her why she is weeping and she turns around, thinking that Jesus is the gardener asks where the body was taken John 20:16 When Jesus says her name she recognizes Him John 20:17 Jesus tells her to stop clinging to Him and tells her and go to His brethren and tell them that “I ascend to the Father” John 20:18 Mary does as instructed 1 Corinthians 15:3 - 8 Jesus' resurrection according to the Scriptures
Why do Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah? Many people who aren't followers think, "Well, it's just blind faith." We disagree. Our faith is based on the scriptures and historic events. In a couple weeks, we'll be talking about the major event that happened that causes most people to say that's why they believe that Jesus is the Son of God. However, the scriptures told us ahead of time when Jesus would appear. They told us how we would teach and how we would be rejected by His people. It also foretold that He would be crucified in the manner of that death. It also talked about His burial. Most times people don't look at that. But the scriptures foretold the way that Jesus' body would be handled and the condition of that body and how He would be buried. They were done according to the scriptures. So we have faith based upon events that happened according to the scriptures. See how His condition of the body and His burial comported with the scriptures. Sermon Notes John 19:31 & 32 The Jews want the crucifixion over to avoid being on Passover John 19:33 & 34 Since Jesus was already dead His bones were not broken, but the soldier pierced Jesus' side and blood and water poured out John 19:35 John witnessed these things, they are true so that we might believe John 19:36 & 37 No bones broken and Jesus was pierced in the side, which confirmed the Scriptures John 19:38 – 40 Joseph and Nicodemus take Jesus' body and care for it John 19:41 & 42 They lay Jesus's body in an unused tomb confirming the Scriptures Isaiah 53:9 Messiah's grave predicted
The Roman Empire crucified thousands of people. They also were involved in the crucifixion of Jesus. But the crucifixion of Jesus was different in many ways. I invite you to come and listen to this message on how the crucifixion of Jesus was different and how it impacts you. Sermon Notes John 19:17 Jesus bears His own cross John 19:18 He was crucified between two men John 19:19 – 22 Pilate has an inscription written and the Jews object, but Pilate leaves it John 19:23 – 25a The soldiers gamble for Jesus' clothing – according to the Scriptures John 19:25b – 27 Even while being crucified He makes sure His mother is cared for John 19:28 & 29 Jesus says “I am thirsty” – according to the Scriptures John 19:30 Jesus gives up His Spirit, it is not taken from Him 1 Corinthians 15:3 Jesus died for our sins according to the Scriptures
From the time that Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, the people who arrested him bound him and led him to Annas' house. They were seeking to assert control and authority over Jesus. It's interesting, trying to assert control and authority over the Son of God. When Jesus fails to immediately answer one of Pilate's questions, Pilate says, "Don't you understand that I have authority over you?" Jesus tells him the authority that he has doesn't come from the Roman government. John 19:1 Pilate has Jesus scourged John 19:2 & 3 Roman soldiers abuse Jesus John 19:4 & 5 Pilate presents Jesus saying he finds no guilt in Him John 19:6 & 7 Pilate attempts to avoid responsibility, but the chief priests and offiers demand that Jesus be crucified and state that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God John 19:8 – 11 Jesus refuses to answer Pilate's questions. Pilate asserts he has authority over Jesus, but Jesus responds he only has authority because it was given by heaven. But Jeus also says those who are delivering Him have greater sin than Pilate John 19:12 – 15 Pilate still seeks to release Jesus, but the Jews keep the pressure on by saying that if he doesn't crucify Jesus he is no friend of Caesar and they have no king but Caesar
