E57: Interview with Director Rita Miller on STEM Education, DoD STARBASE, & Project-based learning In today's episode, I get to have an amazing conversation with Director Rita Miller of the DoD STARBASE program at NAS Pensacola. Professional Biography Ms. Rita Miller moved to Pensacola, Florida just over a year ago to take the position of Director for the Department of Defense STARBASE Pensacola Youth Education Program at NAS Pensacola. Before this position, she was the Deputy Director/Director of DoD STARBASE Oklahoma for 5 years. She has a Master of Science in Education and holds an Elementary Principal Certificate. Additionally, Rita was a public school educator for 15 years, where she taught 5th and 6th grades. Rita also served in the United States Air Force and Oklahoma Air National Guard where she was commissioned as an officer and was assigned various roles including Comptroller, Maintenance, and Support Group Commander, respectively. She retired in Dec 2015 at the rank of Colonel after 31 years serving our great country. On the family side, Ms. Miller has two children, Katie (who is also a teacher) and Austin who still reside in Oklahoma. When she is not at work or visiting her loved ones, Rita enjoys music, movies, reading, relaxing on the beach, and volunteering in the community. About Dr. Mary Sylvester: Mary F. Sylvester, EdD, is a dance and geography educator from central Connecticut. Dr. Sylvester is an adjunct lecturer in geography at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT and Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT, and an adjunct lecturer in dance studies at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield, CT. In the private sector, she teaches early childhood through adult level dance classes at Farmington Valley Dance & Music (FVDM) in Farmington, CT. At FVDM, she is also the acting coordinator of the teaching assistant program and the studio's National Honors Society for Dance Arts chapter. In prior collaborations, Dr. Sylvester worked with the Connecticut Dance Alliance as the statewide Dance History Project technical manager, the Hartt School at the University of Hartford as a BFA dance pedagogy mentor, and the Hartt School Community Division as a dance faculty member.
