We sit down with Dr. Jessi Gold, a psychiatrist and Chief Wellness Officer for the University of Tennessee system. We dive into the challenges of managing wellness for over 80,000 students and faculty across five campuses, the complexities of test anxiety in medical education, and the evolving definition of burnout in healthcare. Dr. Gold also shares insights on the impact of perfectionism and competition in pre-med culture, and how these pressures contribute to long-term stress and burnout. Tune in for an in-depth conversation on mental health, wellness, and the steps healthcare systems can take to support students and professionals. Takeaways: Test anxiety is a major issue for medical students, often leading to physical symptoms such as nausea and sleeplessness, and it persists throughout their training. Burnout is a widespread problem in healthcare and higher education, but it's often misunderstood and used as a catch-all term for workplace stress. The role of a Chief Wellness Officer involves addressing both mental health and overall well-being across multiple domains, such as emotional, physical, and financial health. Perfectionism and competition begin early in pre-med culture and are significant contributors to stress, leading to burnout later in medical training and practice. Removing high-stakes test scores, like with the shift to pass/fail systems, can create new forms of competition, such as requiring more research or extracurricular achievements to stand out. — Want to Learn About Dr. Jessi Gold: X / Instagram / TikTok / Threads: @drjessigold — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Craig explains that practicing negative emotions can reinforce stress responses, leading to reactions such as freezing or fainting during tests. He notes the disconnect between perceived threats in testing scenarios and their actual non-physical nature, which can cloud judgment and performance. The discussion explores the subconscious mind's role in influencing emotional responses and survival instincts, often prioritizing past traumas over rational thought.https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-meriwether-44286718b/https://aceanytest.com/

Some people embrace practice and coaching in order to be ready for a certain moment, while others train to be fully present in any moment. When it comes to the most important moments, why not both? Amy and Mike invited educators Claire Russell and Aproteem Choudhury to explore how preparation and mindfulness go together. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How do test prep tutoring and mindfulness coaching overlap? What are the primary reasons a student would benefit from mindfulness preparation in test prep? How does mindfulness help students achieve in high-stakes events? How can we help students be more receptive to mind-body strategies? What is one mindfulness tip anyone can implement now? MEET OUR GUESTS Claire Russell is the founder of Russell Tutoring, a boutique, K-college tutoring, test prep, and mindfulness coaching company. Claire has been an educator for 30 years, and she first became interested in mindfulness strategies when she saw students achieve far lower on test day than in their practice work. RTC's Mindfulness Programs have evolved from there, and a third of RTC's tutors are certified mindfulness coaches. RTC invests in mindfulness coaching both because anxiety has become so rampant in our students nationwide, and because Claire has become passionate about self-care as a skill students need for life. Claire is an avid gardener and forever suffers being a fan of the Tottenham Hotspurs. Aproteem Choudhury is a Mindfulness Coach for Russell Tutoring. Apro brings a degree in Neuroscience and extensive clinical and healthcare systems experience to the teaching of mind-body science at RTC. More importantly, he is the Director of the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative at the Institute for Spirituality and Health. At GHHC, he integrates mind-body medicine to promote community health through innovative public health initiatives that are trauma-informed and community-led. At Russell Tutoring, Apro also applies his wealth of experience to empower students, equipping them with stress management skills and resilience-building techniques to optimize their test-taking potential. Are standardized tests truly the gatekeepers to higher education, or are they just another hoop to jump through in academics? In this episode of the Better Learning Podcast, Kevin Stoller delves deep into this contentious topic with Sean Patel, the mastermind behind Prep Expert. Brace yourselves for a conversation that will challenge your perceptions of education, standardized testing, and the road to success. It's no secret that college entrance exams hold immense power over a student's future. Sean Patel knows this firsthand. Despite being a stellar student, he grappled with test anxiety and uncertainty when facing the SAT. But here's the twist: Patel didn't accept defeat. Instead, he went on a journey of self-discovery and relentless preparation, ultimately increasing his score an astounding 640 points to perfection. Patel's improvement wasn't just about acing a test; it was about shattering the myth that standardized testing is an insurmountable barrier for those who don't fit the mold. This shows that the current system is flawed. Standardized testing, though intended to level the playing field, often ends up exacerbating inequalities. It's a game where the rules seem arbitrary, and victory eludes many deserving candidates. In our conversation, Patel doesn't just critique the status quo; he offers tangible solutions. From reimagining the education system to prioritizing skills over scores, he lays out a roadmap for reform that's as inspiring as it is pragmatic. Takeaways College entrance exams play a crucial role in the college admissions process and can significantly impact a student's chances of getting into their desired university. Education should focus not only on content but also on developing skills and traits such as self-motivation, hard work, and time management. Standardized testing provides a merit-based framework for evaluating students and can help differentiate between individuals in a system with grade inflation. The education system can sometimes feel like a game, with students and schools trying to navigate the rules and achieve the best outcomes. Life can be seen as a game, with individuals striving to get ahead and succeed in various areas such as business and career. Equal opportunity is important, but making everyone equal in outcomes may not be realistic or desirable. The education system faces challenges in balancing equity and access with the realities of the real world. Drive, grit, and self-motivation are crucial for success, regardless of one's circumstances. When it comes to preparing for a state standardized test, we tend to focus our energy and time on the content our students need to master in order to get a high-achieving score. We implement daily practice and review for weeks leading up to the test. However, one aspect that we don't focus on but plays a big role in our students' performances is test anxiety. In today's episode, I'm providing you with a variety of information that will help students manage and overcome test anxiety.Test anxiety is the emotional component around testing, which can often be difficult to identify in students. Therefore, I'm sharing the signs of test anxiety, some of the major causes or factors that contribute to it, and strategies to help reduce this overwhelming feeling they have. Knowing these signs and factors can help you identify students early on, which will then provide them with the necessary strategies and tools to help them process and manage it to the best of their ability. Making sure your students are prepared academically to take the state standardized test is so important, but don't forget to prepare them for the emotional role it can have on them as well. By addressing test anxiety directly, you will be supporting them by giving them the tools and strategies they need to feel confident and perform as their greatest selves.
