E38: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | Mathematics | Ratios and Proportions Ratios - Definition A ratio is a comparison of two quantities. For example, if we have a bowl containing 3 red apples and 4 green apples, the ratio of red apples to green apples is 3 to 4. But how do we write that mathematically? Ratios are often expressed in colon form, such as 3 colon 4 or in fraction form which would be 3 over 4. Explanation: We have 3 red apples for every 4 green apples.  Mmmm… I love apples. Ok, where were we? Ah yes, Proportions! Proportions - Definition Now that we understand Ratios we can explain Proportions! Because basically proportions involve two ratios that are equal to each other.  What? Ok, Ok, get this. If we have two bowls with the same ratio of red to green apples, say 3 to 4, then they are in proportion. And we would express this in fraction form meaning 3 over 4 is equal to 3 over 4 signifying bowl one is equal to bowl two. Why is this important? Let's try to apply this to an example: Let's apply our knowledge of ratios and proportions to ingredients to a real-world problem like cooking. Let's say you have a recipe that serves 4 people, but are cooking for 8 people, sooo you've got to double the recipe, right? Well, how do you do that? You can use proportions to scale up the ingredients. For example, If the original recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to serve 4 people thats 2 cups to 4 people. The question we are asking ourselves is how many cups for 8 people. We don't know yet so we will let x equal the unknown amount of cups and 8 equal the total amount of people. Therefore, set up a proportion using the fraction form: 2 over 4 equals x over 8.  2/4 = x/8 Solving for x, you will cross multiply: 4 * x = 2 * 8. This simplifies to 4x = 16. Next solve for our unknown “x” by dividing both sides by 4, and you get x = 4. Therefore, you'll need 4 cups of flour to double the recipe.  Now there are few different ways to set that up, but what we did was keep it equal by having the cups to people equals cups to people proportion when solving for our unknown. Stay with me now. You seem a little unsure so let's try the example I was talking about earlier with the building and the statue from the FTCE Mathematics Practice test: The problem states: A building 51 feet tall casts a shadow 48 feet long. Simultaneously, a nearby statue casts a shadow of 16 feet. How tall is the statue? What? Where do we even start? Wait! I know, we can set this up using a proportion. So we have a building that is 51 feet tall with a 48 foot shadow. I'm going to go ahead and set up this ratio as 51 to 48 using the fraction form 51 over 48.  Next I have a statue that is “I dont' know how tall” and a shadow of 16 feet. What do I do with an unknown? Yes! That's right, I assign it as “x”. Now I can set up this ratio as x to 16 or in fraction form x over 16. Let's set these two ratios up using a proportion to solve for the height of the statue. This is going to look like building height over shadow length equals statue height over statue length. The numbers for this are 51 over 48 equals x over 16. 51/48 = x/16 Solving for x, you will cross multiply: 48 * x = 51 * 16. This simplifies to 48x = 816. Next solve for our unknown “x” by dividing both sides by 48, and you get x = 17. Therefore, the height of the statue is 17 feet, basically the statue is 17 feet tall.  Check out the FTCE Seminar website  for more information and resources. E37: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | Pre-Exam Motivation In today's episode, we'll be talking about Positive Self-talk before taking the test. Have you ever listened to the voice inside your head that whispered “What if I fail or I can't do this”  That's right, we are diving into your thought life with some powerful words and motivation. I want to share with you something. I used to be really critical, I mean really critical of myself. But I have changed. I have changed.  “how I talk to myself every morning” but ya know, to be honest, I had to unlearn negative self-talk, and re-learn how to be my own coach, teacher, and friend. Maybe you're like this too? You can listen to this motivation before you study, before you take the test, or just on the daily to improve your thought life. Let's get started:  Positive Self Talk. To all the students out there listening, I want you to take a moment to visualize your own success. See yourself graduating from college, see yourself passing the big test, picture yourself smiling.   I want you to see it clearly in your mind's eye - the goal that you have set for yourself to achieve. Feel excited about your goal, it's YOURS. This is your GOAL, this is YOUR dream, THIS. IS. YOURS. Be all in. Make a commitment to BE. ALL. IN. Show all the way up, Everyday.  In my life, I have three rules. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Here's the thing, the thing about goals and dreams and life: There will be challenges! There will be hard times to overcome. There will be tests! And when those days come, and when those challenges present themselves - lean in, pick up the pace, and commit with GRIT to the grind. Because success doesn't just fall into our laps. It's earned through grit, and grind, it's earned through time and work. If you want to be good at something you got to put in the time, If you want to be GREAT at something you've got to put in the time. I know it's not always easy. There will be challenges along the way – late nights studying, moments of self-doubt,  setbacks beyond your control.  The hard times didn't come to stay. The hard times came to pass. Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal,  Don't give up on yourself. It's not the challenge that breaks you - it's the challenge that makes you! Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal,  Don't give up on yourself. Is the challenge you are facing today your thought life? Do you tell yourself you're not good enough, you're not gonna make it? You've got to say NO to negative self-talk, and YES to a new way of thinking. You've got to unlearn those OLD WAYS of thinking, and relearn a positive mindset. RIght now, right now, say out loud: I've got a dream. I've got a goal. I can do this! I know you are listening. I know you've put in the long hours and hard work. You've put in the time. The effort. The commitment. I want you to have an athlete's mindset toward an academic goal. Hit the homerun, score the touchdown, pass the test. You are ready. You are ready. Now go out there, achieve your dream. Conquer your goal. And show all the way up FOR. YOURSELF. You are worth it. E36: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | Mathematics | Probability Probability is all around us, you may be familiar with probability in real life when you are trying to predict the weather - you may even hear yourself say something like “Well, there is a 76% chance of rain through Thursday.” Oh that's great, I love the rain. The FTCE testing blueprint says we need to understand counting procedures, tables, and tree diagrams to solve real-world probability problems. So let's start define these three things: Counting procedures involve systematically counting the number of possible outcomes in a given scenario. This method is useful when each outcome is equally likely. You will apply this method in those questions about marbles or coins, you know what I mean - those questions. We will tackle one together later. Now, let's move on to tables. Tables are cool because they offer us a visual tool where we can analyze organized data. Finally, let's explore tree diagrams. Tree diagrams are graphical representations of possible outcomes in a sequential manner. Tree diagrams are another visual way of organizing possible outcomes. And literally a tree diagram looks like branches. Ok, that was pretty brief, but I know you are familiar with tables and diagrams. So let's take a better look at counting procedures and how to use them. Check out the FTCE Seminar website  for more information and resources. E32: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | English | Standard Verb Forms In today's episode, I'll be talking about the FTCE General Knowledge English Language Skills Subtest.  We are going to focus on standard verb forms and how to correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense. Inappropriate shifts! Is it getting past tense in here or is it just the verbs? Hahaha  I know, I know, I had to! Now let's get started. Concept #1 Standard Verb Forms and Concept #2 Correcting inappropriate shifts in verb tense Today we are talking verb, but more technically about being able to identify when an infinitive, past tense or past participle verb is being used incorrectly in a sentence.  We are all familiar with verbs because they are words that describe the action of the sentence and they are part of the predicate of a sentence. But, then verbs can get a little bit complicated because well, life is complicated. Oh wow, that was deep. yeah. Okay, crash course on infinitive, past tense, and irregular verbs!  Simply put, infinitive verbs are the base form of a verb plus the word to. T-o- to. As in to dance, or to sing, and to celebrate!  Next, we can make most infinitive verbs past tense by adding the suffix e-d.  As in this example: Last weekend (past tense because it already happened) we danced, we singed, we celebrated!  What? We singed? That doesn't sound right? You are right, it doesn't sound right! That's because sing is an example of an irregular verb. What are irregular verbs? I'm glad you asked!  Irregular verbs just can't get with the standard “e-d” ending when shifting to past tense. Instead, irregular verbs change into different words completely and we have low-key mastered the memorization of hundreds of these irregular verb words throughout our lifetime.  Being able to identify Standard Verb Forms and make corrections to inappropriate shifts in verb tense will help you on the English portion of the General Knowledge test. In fact, being able to use verb tenses correctly will help you with your academic writing or like when you are grading papers. How cool is that!  For more practice with English Language Skills visit FTCE seminar.com and download one of our Podcast Study Guides. E31: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | Reading | Evaluating Different Formats of Content: Primary and Secondary Sources In today's episode, I'll be talking about the FTCE General Knowledge Reading Subtest. This is part 10 of a multi-series review of what YOU need to know to pass the Reading section of the GK. Today we are going to talk about evaluating content presented in different formats. What? When you say content do you mean information and when you say different formats are you talking about pictures, graphs, websites, stuff like that? Well yes and no, yes because pictures, graphs, and websites are sources of information and what we will be learning today is the difference between primary and secondary sources of information.  So let's get started! Concept #1 Primary and secondary sources Let's take a look at some definitions and examples here.  Primary source. Definition: Original content or first hand account that provides evidence during the time the source represents. Things like original documents, creative works, artifacts or relics are primary sources. A few specific examples include: A scientific research article, data, an autobiography, historical documents, a diary ooooh, letters, poetry, paintings, interviews of a source, and speeches.  Hmmm…Now, secondary sources are a bit different. Let's define those. Secondary source. Definition:  An interpretation of a primary source which is one or two steps away from the original source itself. This interpretation could be an analysis, a summary, a critique, or an editorial. The idea here is that the secondary source is about one or more primary sources. Specific Examples of secondary sources include: Biographies, Editorials, Commentaries, Reviews, and articles referencing someone else's research. The common ground here is that a biography is about someone else's life, an editorial or commentary may be about someone's else work or a historical event. A review or article could be written about someone's poetry. Regardless of what type of secondary source is being used, secondary sources are not original documents, creative works, or artifacts. Today is a great day to really own and apply those reading strategy skills you've learned about in the last few episodes, and you know what, YOU got this because YOU are AMAZING! Concept #1 Analyzing multiple texts Let's put it this way - on the exam you will be asked to compare and contrast two passages.
