E38: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | Mathematics | Ratios and Proportions Ratios - Definition A ratio is a comparison of two quantities. For example, if we have a bowl containing 3 red apples and 4 green apples, the ratio of red apples to green apples is 3 to 4. But how do we write that mathematically? Ratios are often expressed in colon form, such as 3 colon 4 or in fraction form which would be 3 over 4. Explanation: We have 3 red apples for every 4 green apples.  Mmmm… I love apples. Ok, where were we? Ah yes, Proportions! Proportions - Definition Now that we understand Ratios we can explain Proportions! Because basically proportions involve two ratios that are equal to each other.  What? Ok, Ok, get this. If we have two bowls with the same ratio of red to green apples, say 3 to 4, then they are in proportion. And we would express this in fraction form meaning 3 over 4 is equal to 3 over 4 signifying bowl one is equal to bowl two. Why is this important? Let's try to apply this to an example: Let's apply our knowledge of ratios and proportions to ingredients to a real-world problem like cooking. Let's say you have a recipe that serves 4 people, but are cooking for 8 people, sooo you've got to double the recipe, right? Well, how do you do that? You can use proportions to scale up the ingredients. For example, If the original recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to serve 4 people thats 2 cups to 4 people. The question we are asking ourselves is how many cups for 8 people. We don't know yet so we will let x equal the unknown amount of cups and 8 equal the total amount of people. Therefore, set up a proportion using the fraction form: 2 over 4 equals x over 8.  2/4 = x/8 Solving for x, you will cross multiply: 4 * x = 2 * 8. This simplifies to 4x = 16. Next solve for our unknown “x” by dividing both sides by 4, and you get x = 4. Therefore, you'll need 4 cups of flour to double the recipe.  Now there are few different ways to set that up, but what we did was keep it equal by having the cups to people equals cups to people proportion when solving for our unknown. Stay with me now. You seem a little unsure so let's try the example I was talking about earlier with the building and the statue from the FTCE Mathematics Practice test: The problem states: A building 51 feet tall casts a shadow 48 feet long. Simultaneously, a nearby statue casts a shadow of 16 feet. How tall is the statue? What? Where do we even start? Wait! I know, we can set this up using a proportion. So we have a building that is 51 feet tall with a 48 foot shadow. I'm going to go ahead and set up this ratio as 51 to 48 using the fraction form 51 over 48.  Next I have a statue that is “I dont' know how tall” and a shadow of 16 feet. What do I do with an unknown? Yes! That's right, I assign it as “x”. Now I can set up this ratio as x to 16 or in fraction form x over 16. Let's set these two ratios up using a proportion to solve for the height of the statue. This is going to look like building height over shadow length equals statue height over statue length. The numbers for this are 51 over 48 equals x over 16. 51/48 = x/16 Solving for x, you will cross multiply: 48 * x = 51 * 16. This simplifies to 48x = 816. Next solve for our unknown “x” by dividing both sides by 48, and you get x = 17. Therefore, the height of the statue is 17 feet, basically the statue is 17 feet tall.  Check out the FTCE Seminar website  for more information and resources. E37: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | Pre-Exam Motivation In today's episode, we'll be talking about Positive Self-talk before taking the test. Have you ever listened to the voice inside your head that whispered “What if I fail or I can't do this”  That's right, we are diving into your thought life with some powerful words and motivation. I want to share with you something. I used to be really critical, I mean really critical of myself. But I have changed. I have changed.  “how I talk to myself every morning” but ya know, to be honest, I had to unlearn negative self-talk, and re-learn how to be my own coach, teacher, and friend. Maybe you're like this too? You can listen to this motivation before you study, before you take the test, or just on the daily to improve your thought life. Let's get started:  Positive Self Talk. To all the students out there listening, I want you to take a moment to visualize your own success. See yourself graduating from college, see yourself passing the big test, picture yourself smiling.   I want you to see it clearly in your mind's eye - the goal that you have set for yourself to achieve. Feel excited about your goal, it's YOURS. This is your GOAL, this is YOUR dream, THIS. IS. YOURS. Be all in. Make a commitment to BE. ALL. IN. Show all the way up, Everyday.  In my life, I have three rules. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Wake up. Be Awesome. Repeat. Here's the thing, the thing about goals and dreams and life: There will be challenges! There will be hard times to overcome. There will be tests! And when those days come, and when those challenges present themselves - lean in, pick up the pace, and commit with GRIT to the grind. Because success doesn't just fall into our laps. It's earned through grit, and grind, it's earned through time and work. If you want to be good at something you got to put in the time, If you want to be GREAT at something you've got to put in the time. I know it's not always easy. There will be challenges along the way – late nights studying, moments of self-doubt,  setbacks beyond your control.  The hard times didn't come to stay. The hard times came to pass. Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal,  Don't give up on yourself. It's not the challenge that breaks you - it's the challenge that makes you! Don't give up on your dream Don't give up on your goal,  Don't give up on yourself. Is the challenge you are facing today your thought life? Do you tell yourself you're not good enough, you're not gonna make it? You've got to say NO to negative self-talk, and YES to a new way of thinking. You've got to unlearn those OLD WAYS of thinking, and relearn a positive mindset. RIght now, right now, say out loud: I've got a dream. I've got a goal. I can do this! I know you are listening. I know you've put in the long hours and hard work. You've put in the time. The effort. The commitment. I want you to have an athlete's mindset toward an academic goal. Hit the homerun, score the touchdown, pass the test. You are ready. You are ready. Now go out there, achieve your dream. Conquer your goal. And show all the way up FOR. YOURSELF. You are worth it. E36: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | Mathematics | Probability Probability is all around us, you may be familiar with probability in real life when you are trying to predict the weather - you may even hear yourself say something like “Well, there is a 76% chance of rain through Thursday.” Oh that's great, I love the rain. The FTCE testing blueprint says we need to understand counting procedures, tables, and tree diagrams to solve real-world probability problems. So let's start define these three things: Counting procedures involve systematically counting the number of possible outcomes in a given scenario. This method is useful when each outcome is equally likely. You will apply this method in those questions about marbles or coins, you know what I mean - those questions. We will tackle one together later. Now, let's move on to tables. Tables are cool because they offer us a visual tool where we can analyze organized data. Finally, let's explore tree diagrams. Tree diagrams are graphical representations of possible outcomes in a sequential manner. Tree diagrams are another visual way of organizing possible outcomes. And literally a tree diagram looks like branches. Ok, that was pretty brief, but I know you are familiar with tables and diagrams. So let's take a better look at counting procedures and how to use them. Check out the FTCE Seminar website  for more information and resources. E32: Teacher Certification Podcast | FTCE | General Knowledge | English | Standard Verb Forms In today's episode, I'll be talking about the FTCE General Knowledge English Language Skills Subtest.  We are going to focus on standard verb forms and how to correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense. Inappropriate shifts! Is it getting past tense in here or is it just the verbs? Hahaha  I know, I know, I had to! Now let's get started. Concept #1 Standard Verb Forms and Concept #2 Correcting inappropriate shifts in verb tense Today we are talking verb, but more technically about being able to identify when an infinitive, past tense or past participle verb is being used incorrectly in a sentence.  We are all familiar with verbs because they are words that describe the action of the sentence and they are part of the predicate of a sentence. But, then verbs can get a little bit complicated because well, life is complicated. Oh wow, that was deep. yeah. Okay, crash course on infinitive, past tense, and irregular verbs!  Simply put, infinitive verbs are the base form of a verb plus the word to. T-o- to. As in to dance, or to sing, and to celebrate!  Next, we can make most infinitive verbs past tense by adding the suffix e-d.  As in this example: Last weekend (past tense because it already happened) we danced, we singed, we celebrated!  What? We singed? That doesn't sound right? You are right, it doesn't sound right! That's because sing is an example of an irregular verb. What are irregular verbs? I'm glad you asked!  Irregular verbs just can't get with the standard “e-d” ending when shifting to past tense. Instead, irregular verbs change into different words completely and we have low-key mastered the memorization of hundreds of these irregular verb words throughout our lifetime.  Being able to identify Standard Verb Forms and make corrections to inappropriate shifts in verb tense will help you on the English portion of the General Knowledge test. In fact, being able to use verb tenses correctly will help you with your academic writing or like when you are grading papers. How cool is that!  For more practice with English Language Skills visit FTCE seminar.com and download one of our Podcast Study Guides. This is part 10 of a multi-series review of what YOU need to know to pass the Reading section of the GK. Today we are going to talk about evaluating content presented in different formats. What? When you say content do you mean information and when you say different formats are you talking about pictures, graphs, websites, stuff like that? Well yes and no, yes because pictures, graphs, and websites are sources of information and what we will be learning today is the difference between primary and secondary sources of information.  So let's get started! Concept #1 Primary and secondary sources Let's take a look at some definitions and examples here.  Primary source. Definition: Original content or first hand account that provides evidence during the time the source represents. Things like original documents, creative works, artifacts or relics are primary sources. A few specific examples include: A scientific research article, data, an autobiography, historical documents, a diary ooooh, letters, poetry, paintings, interviews of a source, and speeches.  Hmmm…Now, secondary sources are a bit different. Let's define those. Secondary source. Definition:  An interpretation of a primary source which is one or two steps away from the original source itself. This interpretation could be an analysis, a summary, a critique, or an editorial. The idea here is that the secondary source is about one or more primary sources. Specific Examples of secondary sources include: Biographies, Editorials, Commentaries, Reviews, and articles referencing someone else's research. The common ground here is that a biography is about someone else's life, an editorial or commentary may be about someone's else work or a historical event. A review or article could be written about someone's poetry. Regardless of what type of secondary source is being used, secondary sources are not original documents, creative works, or artifacts. Today is a great day to really own and apply those reading strategy skills you've learned about in the last few episodes, and you know what, YOU got this because YOU are AMAZING! Concept #1 Analyzing multiple texts Let's put it this way - on the exam you will be asked to compare and contrast two passages. E1: Teacher Certification Podcast | Study Hack | How-to-Microlearn In today's episode, I'll be talking about micro-learning. Micro-learning is a kind of buncha - mini - lessons that can be repeated over and over again in less than 10 minutes so you can individualize your learning and strengthen specific skills. It's what we use at FTCESEMINAR.com to teach concepts. Put it this way. When I sat for the FTCE General Knowledge I started with a book, opened it to page one and started plowing through it. Sure that's one way to do it, but that's because I didn't know about micro-learning! Now, where were we, ah yes. Microlearning. That's right. First things first: What really is microlearning? And how is this educational strategy going to help me pass the test? According to the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), micro-learning is a relatively new educational strategy as a result of the rapid changes in our technological society. Today's learner faces time constraints while juggling work, school, and family priorities making microlearning an effective way to study-on-the-go.  Check out this resource for more Study Hacks or visit the FTCE Seminar website for more information and resources. **Support FTCE Seminar! **Contributions are appreciated and help support the maintenance of this resource. America's educational leaders, the ones who set the tone for a critical mass of K-12 and university education, are the products of a very narrow schooling. Today's pedagogy is rooted in Marxism and hostile to our shared Western Civilization. To be clear, today's educational leaders have been taught to hate America and to actively work for its overthrow. We, active citizens loyal to the Republic as well as to Judeo-Christian values, can and should unseat these latter-day Nomenklatura and restore genuine learning to our schools. •  We have such a heart for CTE. So I'm really excited to have you with me and just talking about alternative certification programs, we need to fill that teacher pipeline, so let's just start right out the gate. What is CTE?  Alright, well, CTE is an acronym that stands for career and technical education, and that is the current phrase that we use to describe what we used to call vocational education, so we're talking about hands-on, small groups, very structured type of learning environments, and that's essentially what CTE is. CTE tends to be your electives, your hands-on elective classes, and a lot of times they lead to potential certifications or things of that nature that lead into careers. So very career-driven curriculum(3:06).• CTE or back as it was originally known, vocational education. It really came about right at the turn of the last century, and it started with farming. There was this need to incorporate some real tangible hands-on skills and techniques for students so that they could actually finish their high school experience and get out there and have a tangible skill set such as being able to farm.  In the beginning, it was very ag-driven, and then from there, we ended up going into World War 1. That model ended up being used to teach teachers how to teach their students tangible things to help with the war effort, so things like how to drive, because again, we're talking about the turn of last century, so automotive skills and things of that nature, and so that's where CTE really got its foothold, and as we moved through the years and come up to where we currently are now... Really what CTE does is, again, it provides this type of education that really gives students these hands-on tangible skill sets to be able to enter into the workforce, so when that is our goal, we need teachers who come from industry to be able to deliver that kind of curriculum effectively. (5:17)• How we work with teacher certifications is by offering an intensified course. This is open for people who have been in industry and have a certain number of hours in industry. These are individuals who want to get into the classroom, but they don't necessarily want to go the traditional academic route and put four years in for an undergrad and then get their teaching starts to get on top of it. So what we do is we look at their work history and we make sure that they have enough hours in that particular area, and then we enroll them in this very intensified program where we have short courses that really give them the background need to have... In how to write lesson plans, how to handle classroom management, and we put them right away into a teacher practicum, so that means they're in the classroom.  Everything is very condensed and short and you can, depending on where you're at, you can get through the program within... One summer up to two years, just kind of depending on what route you want to take. (8:46)• I am such a believer in CTE, I'm so glad that I stumbled into this field. Once I really started understanding what CTE is and how it can reach students, I had just never looked back I'm just such a believer in it. One thing I love about CTE is that it is hands-on education, these are the classes where you are actually making things... You are working in small groups. I used to teach Culinary Arts at Mount Vernon high school where I did my student teaching. That was my first teaching job were and where I taught beginning foods, Advanced foods, and I loved that. I loved that small group dynamic, and you see it in students, they enjoy that too. They really thrive in that type of environment where they're able to work together, work collaboratively, while they're working collaboratively, they are reading a recipe, they're interpreting it, they are delegating duties, they are working together, and then at the end of it, they have a product that they can share in this scenario, it's food, they're able to sit down and eat, so not only are they learning, but all of these basic needs are being met. In episode 6 we continue our exploration of teacher preparation pathways with a little history lesson. We travel far enough back in time that we can see the origin of teacher certification and our current framework for teacher certification as part of the same landscape. In doing so, we should identify trends as they have unfolded over the nearly two centuries since teacher certification began in the US, and gain a little perspective regarding the bigger picture and context guiding these trends. When it comes down to it - we would love nothing more to be there for our family and friends but it can sometimes come at a price ,either both parties accept your boundaries you have put in place or they become fractured & neither one respects your wishes or they think you are being unreasonable now I know that is really difficult to do as you may have family members who may not be the most supportive or they may be toxic or they could be unknowingly making things worse and a just trying to do what they think is right ,perhaps you have never set up boundaries and you feel you would be causing distress in your family and friends dynamic but as someone who as of March last year started implementing boundaries I can honestly say that it has made a huge difference to know boundaries are in place to not only protect me from unnecessary situations , arguments etc it's also two fold in that it works in every one else's favour as well so that there's an understanding but those around you have to be willing to keep to those boundaries . after all , your personal space is vitally important as is your mental health and everyone's else's for that matters. Self Love: Self - love is a state of appreciation for one self that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth . Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others, it means not settling for less than you deserve . Self-love is different for everyone: for starters, it can mean : Talking to and about yourself with love Prioritizing yourself Giving yourself a break from self - Judgement Trusting yourself Being true to yourself Being nice to yourself Setting healthy boundaries Forgiving yourself when you aren't being true or nice to yourself Back in June of last year I started my journey , my spiritual journey and I started Usui Reiki Meditation as part of doing something for me , I have done other forms of meditation before but I never got in to it however that all changed when I started learning Usui Reiki and have gone and reviewed my Teacher Certification in Usui Reiki but it has been a staple , a routine for me every morning and night to go off into another world ,close my eyes and escape the chaos - I've also recently got in to wearing Nail polish to take care of my nails better as if you are a nail biter like me because of anxiety it was a bad habit : I had a reason for doing it but I wanted to make a change which is where self love comes in to it . Self love is one of the keys to manage your mental health better . Mental illness affects Romantic Relationships : Nearly half of adults experience a mental illness at least once in their lifetime. Research and practical experience tells us that mental illness can cause a person decreased quality of life , decreased productivity and employment, and even Impaired physical health. A mental illness--including post traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and alcoholism can also affect a person's Relationships. There may be no relationship more affected by mental illness than the intimate relationship between partner's. The good news is that it's possible to be in a healthy, loving, and long-term partnership with someone who has a mental illness. If this is relevant to you, be aware of the unique challenges you and your partner may face, and utilize resources and strategies that will help you grow and nurture your relationship. 3 Ways Mental Illness Can Affect an Intimate Relationship The following issues are common within couples affected by mental illness. No two relationships are the exact same, so it's important to take into context your unique relationship so you'll be able to identify where you may need additional guidance. Shame, guilt, and resentment. Having a mental illness is hard enough --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

She is passionate about the topic of educational policy and leadership. She is currently a professor and the director of the education department at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. In this episode, of the Z-rated Success Podcast, Nick sits with Dr. Cadeau as she talks about the teacher’s certification process. In this episode you will learn:The basic requirement to be certified as a teacher is the general and professional knowledge and a bachelor’s degree in any field. Then you need to contact the department of education in the state you’re in. Dr. Cadeau explains the process that one goes through in Florida, where you can be approved after being reviewed or deemed illegible. What you could do to become eligible. She shares her story from being a career changer to a teacher. She noticed the problem with career changer teachers was quitting too early on the journey and wanted to help them, so she took exams to go into administration. She then went into classroom teaching and walked the walk of being in the classroom to be able to facilitate that help. She talks about her online program, which is in partnership with the Miami Dade Public County Schools and everyone else interested. In the program, a teacher can major in elementary ed but can also get a specialization in special ed or teaching English language learners. The best thing about it is that they will accept nine transfer credits which means you’ll finish early- in a year. If you fail the teacher’s certification tests, you can keep on trying to take them- there is an online company where they train you in your problem areas. The renewal program for certification and the renewal fee. You have to renew your certification, even for Dr. Cadeau does so even though she trains teachers and hasn’t been in a classroom in years. She explains what you will need for the renewal of your certification as a teacher. She also mentions the free teacher’s certification exam that Florida offers until July 31st.Florida State added a new course requirement, which includes the strategies of teaching students with disabilities a few years back.Teacher turnover. Stress and lack of classroom management are just some of the things that most new teachers experience. You have to be ready for the students and on top of your content area, have class rules, and be consistent. And also, make sure that you’re certified to protect your job.Dr. Cadeau describes her passion for helping her students achieve their goals as what keeps as a teacher. She learns every day even from her students, she has a drive, and never gives up. She has just been made a full professor which is a first for an African American in St. Thomas University. In 2011 he moved back to New York where he met Sri Dharma Mittra. He completed the 500 hour Life of a Yogi Teacher training in 2013. Later in the year he attended the 50 hour Rocket Certification at Asta Yoga in San Francisco. Yancy's personal practice includes meditation and pranayama 5 days a week. He also regularly attends classes at the studios he teaches at, or from renown teachers in the L.A. area. Yancy hopes that through the yoga practices and techniques you will not be bound by the body or the mind. “You are not your body, you are not your mind.” -Sri Dharma Mittra Here are Yancy's SHAIR Podcast interview highlights: Omar: Yancy, tell us a little bit about what's going on in your life today, your hobbies, exercise. Take us into your normal daily routine, including recovery. Yancy: My normal routine ... I wake up, have a little bit of coffee ... A little bit, not too much. I look at social media, like a couple of things, get that little bit of coffee in me. I do a meditative practice for about thirty, forty five minutes, which involves breathing exercises, chanting, and all sitting in a - if you understand, if you're a yogi - lotus position, which ... It's pretty intense. Once you get used to it, it's pretty good. After that, I go teach a class. I get on my little scooter, go by the beach, teach some yoga classes at the studios. In between classes, I'm either skating or messing around doing yoga on the beach. There's a skate park over there. I teach my last class and then I might take a class and then I bail and go back to Hollywood on the little scooter, go home, eat dinner. That's it. Simple. Omar: It sounds very simple. Now, how do you maintain your recovery program? Do you have a recovery program? Do you hit meetings? I mean, how is that integrated into your life? Yancy: I think my recovery is doing my meditations and my pranayama ... Man, I got hit hard when I was dabbling with stuff. Yeah, I stopped pretty cold, but there's always a little relapse here and there or not knowing, I suppose, what to do or how to do it. I was slow ... I got off hard drugs. I was still drinking here and there and so that took a little while. After I got the yoga ... Yoga is my recovery program. Just going to yoga. That's it. Omar: Well, I'll tell you one thing is for sure, when you're doing thirty to forty five minutes of meditation in lotus position every day, that's pretty intense. Yancy: Yeah. Now, it's pretty normal. Omar: I was just thinking about being in lotus position. First of all, I can't get into lotus position and then, even sitting with my legs crossed for more than five minutes becomes so, so uncomfortable. My wife's a yoga instructor. I get to watch her bend and fold and she makes it look so effortless. I commend you ... Yancy: Well, it took me three years of just sitting half lotus. Three years, man. Three years to sit in full lotus comfortable. Well, three years, so I've been sitting in lotus for three years to be very comfortable. Omar: Well, that's a testament to dedication, to patience. It comes when it comes. You just keep plugging away and plugging away and moving forward. You stay vigilant until it finally happens. That's a lot of what my wife tells me, too. She's just like, "Look, it doesn't matter how far you get. You're going to get a little bit further every day and your body will tell you. It'll help you along." I should probably do a little bit more of it, but I don't. I watch her do it and I could see how much she loves it.
