This episode examines how the biblical authors in the Old and New Testaments personify the Holy Spirit. The personification of God's Spirit is often overlooked in favor of suggestions that the Spirit is a conscious, distinct person alongside the Father, but this is not the view of the biblical authors. We explore how God personifies His attributes, how He sends them as agents, and how the Holy Spirit fits within this context. SummaryIn this episode of FTCE Seminar, host Mercedes Musto discusses the differences between figurative and literal language, emphasizing their roles in literary devices. She explains how figurative language enhances writing through creativity and emotional depth, while literal language conveys straightforward meaning. The episode also covers five common types of figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and illusion, providing definitions and examples for each. Understanding these concepts is crucial for interpreting texts effectively, especially for the FTCE General Knowledge Reading Subtest.Keywordsfigurative language, literal language, literary devices, similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, illusion, reading comprehension, teacher certificationYou can subscribe to the FTCE Seminar Podcast at www.ftceseminar.com
Send us a textIn this episode, Arnie and Fred continue their discussion of examples of other figures of speech. We begin by talking about similes. We note that similes are words or phrases that compare two things. We look at two examples that have the words like or as in them. Next is a discussion of similitudes. We explain what they are and look at two Bible examples where this figure of speech occurs. Hyperboles are looked at next. They are obvious and intentional exaggerations indicating excitement or used to make a point. Jesus used them as did the apostles. We discuss four examples. Personifications are used in both the Old and New Testaments. We note what they are and look at several passages where they appear. Finally, we begin to talk about how to distinguish figurative from literal language but will have to complete this in the next episode. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.

Your heart tells you who you are. Your heart contains all your beliefs.PowerSelling radiates outward from the pulsating fact that people don't bond with companies; people bond with people; personalities that share their beliefs.Your company needs a personality if you want your customers to feel a connection to it. Does your company have a personality? Are you communicating that personality in your advertising?Personification puts the power in PowerSelling. When you speak about something that cannot think as though it can think, you are using the art of personification.“The shattered water made a misty din.Great waves looked over others coming inand thought of doing something to the shorethat water never did to land before.”When you speak about something that cannot ask questions as though it can ask questions, you are using personification.“My little horse must think it queerto stop without a farmhouse nearbetween the woods and frozen lakethe darkest evening of the year.He gives his harness bells a shaketo ask if there is some mistake.”When you speak about something that cannot move as though it can move, you are using the art of personification.“It rained endlessly and the forests wept. The darkness fell and the trees moved closer.”When you can breathe life into something that is not alive, you are a god.Robert Frost and John Steinbeck were able to provide us with those examples of personification because they are Nobel Prize-winning writers. What I am about to say is hard to hear, but I am saying it because I love you: If you believe a brand is a logo, a color palette, a slogan, a visual style guide, and a company name that people have heard of, then your company is just another dreary, drab, and bland corporation in an ocean of bland corporations. Your company has no soul.Remember: People don't bond with companies; people bond with personalities that share their beliefs.PowerSelling happens when you win the customer's heart, knowing that their mind will follow. Their mind will always create logic to justify what their heart has already decided. This is what you must learn to do if you want to create a bond with your customers:Breathe life into your company through the skillful use of personification in all your corporate communications, beginning with your advertising.Employ magical thinking to deepen the public perception that your company has beliefs, values, motives, can make choices, and that it has life.Bond with customers who believe in the
Listener warning: this case is extremely disturbing. It is our final day of the 12 Nightmares Before Christmas. In May 1981, on the outskirts of Chicago, a hotel maid went to work like she did every day. For the most part, the day was uneventful, except when she noticed a horrible smell. The Moonlit Hotel wasn't exactly a five-star place to stay. It was known as a place for drug deals and quick sex. Even so, the maid had never noticed a smell like this before. This was something new. And all day long, she tried to find the source of the stench but never found it. She returned to work the next day, and the smell was even worse. It is a medical fact that women have a better sense of smell than men. They are also better at identifying a specific odor. And what the maid smelled that day was death. Her gut told her that something was dead on the hotel premises, but no matter how much she looked for the source, she couldn't find it. The stench was making it almost impossible to work. Finally, she went to the hotel manager, who said that, yeah, now that she mentioned it, he smelled something, too. She told him that she'd already checked all the rooms, so the manager began to search the grounds. The manager came upon a gruesome discovery in an empty field behind the hotel. This would not be the final victim, but the biggest shock was yet to come. Lately, I've been working on gamification. Not the kind where you get points and add custom outfits to your hamster avatar when you advance through a lesson - though don't get me wrong, that seems cool - more the kind where learning takes place through an actual game structure. We're big fans of games at my house - Catan, Parcheesi, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Wordle, Uno, Apple to Apples - and so I've had a lot of fun brainstorming ideas. But today I was zeroing in on brackets. You know, tournament brackets. Like at March Madness time, or at weekend pickleball tournaments. I've seen lots of folks try March Madness brackets with poetry, which I love, but I was brainstorming out at the edges of that idea today. What else could we bracket? So here's my last quick idea for you as we all swirl into the break tornado and leave work behind for a while. What if we held a bracket for writer's craft moves? Imagine it. Sensory details vs. Personification. Symbolism vs. simile. Appositives vs. strikingly short sentences. The semicolon vs. the dash. Which is more useful? Which paves the way to a great line and why? Where have students seen the move in action and was it truly powerful? How can they use it in their writing and just how handy is it? When you're doing the faceoff, you could have students partner up and search for examples to share, or write examples to read aloud as part of the discussion of the merits of each side. Can you imagine debating which deserves to move forward, symbolism or simile, and then voting for one to advance in the tournament WITHOUT generating a pretty strong understanding of what it is and how to use it? And can you imagine how fun it would be to see students get fired up over the dash being better than the semicolon? Or are the parentheses crushing the ellipses? Yeah, I just had to tell you about this idea. Even though I know you don't have time to use it just at the moment, it was too exciting for me to hold off until next year. I can't wait to hear about your writer's craft tournament in 2025. You can reach me, as always, at betsy@nowsparkcreativity.com with your fabulous stories. Romans 6:11-14 // Tom NelsonOne of the greatest battles of history is not “out there,” but rather, is “in here.” Herein lies a crucial insight as to why following Jesus can be so hard. There is a battle being waged not just with our bodies but in our bodies. In Christ we now live and breathe in a new realm, not of mere religious obligation or moral conformity, but to the realm of grace which is an intimate relationship with God. Being under grace means we are now part of Jesus' new kingdom. What's love got to do with it? Well, everything. When it comes to one's relationship with the Lord and with one another in the local church, love has everything to do with both salvation and service. The major lesson of 1 Corinthians 13 is that the Spirit's ordinary grace excels extraordinary gifts. We will study this under three headings: 1. The Priority of Love (vv. 1–3) 2. The Personification of Love (vv. 4–7) 3. The Permanence of Love (v. 8a)

I know, I know, it's been quite a while fam. But….we are so freaking back! We might be a little rusty, and not super clear about how any of this stuff usually works, but luckily we aren't taking the stage alone. That's right, it's extremely fortuitous for us that everyone's favorite girl group happen to be staging their grand comeback as well. You guessed it, The Cheetah Girls are here and we are going to SPAIN! Come along as we strut down the streets of Barcelona, meet the locals, and cause a riot with the most chaotic and frenetic concert ever performed. Oh, and rhyme a lot of Spanish words with “Cheetah”. Luke battles through illness and missed out on some crazy extras. Emma sings most of the soundtrack and disrespects a mall. Talking Points: We're Back! “How do you get over God trauma aka religious trauma so you can have an intimate relationship with the divine again?” In answer to this listener's question, Cara invited a very special guest, Sarah Chann, for an intimate and enlightening conversation about dealing with religious trauma and re-establishing a genuine connection with the divine. Sarah shares her personal journey of dealing with anger towards the divine, her experiences with faith and trauma, and how she came to her ultimate understanding of God as a force of unconditional love. Sarah's work, which is grounded in the body, emphasizes addressing past traumas and unresolved issues that are oftentimes stored in the body. Cara and Sarah discuss the concept of religious or God trauma, and how to overcome it through a deep, intimate relationship with the divine. They also discuss their individual spiritual paths, the concept of God, unconditional love, sin, and their approach to understanding and experiencing the divine through nature and their internal sense of spirit. As Cara promised in the episode, here's a guided meditation for Feeling Divine Love. This week we are talking about Eisheth Zenunim, "queen of harlots" who is considered the personification of sin in the Zohar, and one of the 4 wives of Samael. We discuss Eisheth's relationship to the serpent in the Garden of Eden as well as to Babalon, and her Kabbalistic association with the Qlippoth, the flip side of the Tree of Life consisting of the "husks" of the dead and considered the embodiment of evil. But is she a temptation to sin for the spiritual aspirant, or a neglected part of the fullness of "creation"?
